AN EYE FOR AN EYE

Working in the shop of the dimension witch Yuko, Kimhiro Watanuki has yet to see a mundane moment. The good, evil, and just plain weird all seem to have an unwavering attraction towards Watanuki, though the feeling is not mutual. These daily troubles can vary from crushes by pretty house spirits like the Zashiki-Warashi to cursed grudges, mysterious evils, and man-eating nightmares. Luckily, Watanuki has begrudgingly found an unlikely ally in his rival Domeki, but could this bring even more chaos than he’s bargained for?

CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

It’s hard to not start with “I loved this installment” because I did and I will continue to love them as I move on with the rest of the series. (4 more omnibus volumes to go).

In this volume we get one huge development between Watanuki and Doumeki that intertwines them even further (me starts thinking in gay even though it’s not gay, god damnit why can’t it be gay?!). Watanuki learns some very vital life lessons and Yuuko continues to exude bad-witch energy everywhere she goes while also eluding to the fact that some very big changes are coming for Watanuki and I’m ready but also scared.

Not much to say beyond I love this series. If I said anymore I would just start spoiling everything 🤣. Anyways, I can’t wait to see what the other volumes have in store. More Watanuki and Doumeki please 👍.

I knew it was going to be the spider and the eye. This was one of the bits that I remember most about the series. Ick. Curious about the parallel with the Tsubasa eye thing, but I just can't. That one isn't for me. Slowly, he's changing. Himawari's situation is getting troublesome and the only sane one of the group is beating his head against the wall. I do like how Doumeki is holding that friendship.

The more I read xxxHolic the more I like it. This omnibus covers spider/eye arc and it was my favorite arc so far. Watanuki and Dômeki relationship is very interesting. The art is exceptionally good.

I'm offering the same preface I did to my other omnibus reviews: Writing reviews for xxxHolic is a futile sort of thing, because it's a story that, in all honesty, is greater than the sum of its parts, which I do actually mean in the best way I can. It's just, the gut punch that is this series requires the build up, requires the many moving pieces slowly fitting into a solid machine of grief and longing and bento boxes (and by many moving pieces, I don't mean the plot events related in Tsubasa--those are the number one reason I never authentically recommend this series for others, as it makes no gotdamn sense thanks to the the Tsubasa crossover arc). Also, reviewing is difficult, as I am completely unable to be objective about this series. So what's going to happen is I'm going give a rough review of what happens in each omnibus and how much pain it's going to cause, strictly so I can remind myself later when I'm trying to remember what events happen where. As such, spoilers abound.

Omnibus #3 contains volumes #7-9. The bulk of this omnibus is the EYE-CONIQUE (okay, I'll stop now) Joro-Gumo arc in which Doumeki and Watanuki become closer in ways CLAMP just loves to write and we just love to read. There are also some lighter episodic stories, and the introduction of two phenomenal characters: Haruka-san and Kohane. This is, again, an omnibus that muses on the nature of choice and self-worth. This part of the story really pushes Watanuki (and readers) to consider how he impacts others, and how his view of himself ripples out towards the people that care about him. Doumeki is pushed, too, and the complicated connection he shares with Watanuki only becomes more complicated. There's pain here, but it's manageable. Certainly easier to swallow than what's coming.

Very, very charming manga, with such interesting concepts about what makes people tick, bonds, superstitions... etc. It's all told in such a believable way you have to wonder if there might be some truth to it.

Can't wait to start on the 4th omnibus, but I can't find it in my local bookshop at the moment. :(

xxxHolic takes a pretty deep turn in this Omnibus as Watanuki makes a deal to help Domeki...who is NOT pleased about it and tries to undo what's been done! These volumes present a persuasive argument against the "martyr complex", and also look at the burdens of taking on someone's dreams or wishes...or taking their life.

The spiritual world is center stage in these volumes with the occultic blending into true fantasy at times. There continues to be lots of great commentary on Japanese customs and traditions (and food!). But the plot is getting more intense. Mystery surrounds Watanuki and his connections to Domeki and Himawari. And Yuko obviously knows more about their fates than she's telling!

The plot of Tsubasa slams into Holic unexpectedly in this Omnibus, giving the reader a nice shock! Watanuki is also being challenged and experiencing changes in himself (physical as well as psychological!). The episodic nature of xxxHolic has started giving way to an overarching plot, hooking the reader even more intently and making them eager to see what happens next!

Shall we? ;)

Another great read and we're getting some fantastic character development for Watanuki. We've seen how isolated he tends to be and the bonds he's been making throughout the series but to see him have to come to terms with his self-worth (or lack thereof) and how his ambivalence for his own well being affects those around him. Ahhhh, such a great read.

I love the growing bond between Doumeki and Watanuki and the eye arc was definitely a fave.

Because this is an omnibus containing three volumes the hints Yuuko dropped about Himawari felt a bit heavy handed - at least three instances of Yuuko seriously questioning if Himawari was really a GOOD LUCK charm for Watanuki.

We get another scence crossover with Tsubasa and things look quite serious and tense. I could honestly do without the crossover because I think this series does so well on it's own.

I really like the growth of Watanuki and, especially, the frienemy-ship with Domeki. I like how their dynamic stays the same but changes. Like they act much the same way with each other in normal conversation, but it's with a different underlying feeling - more of a brotherly feeling now rather than just irritation. The layers with the characters in this series are so good. I also love the way Yuko calls Watanuki out on his crush on Himwari, beginning to point him in a healthier direction. So many things to love about this series!

I again have really enjoyed this omnibus. The story is consistently interesting and there's enough character growth to make me really enjoy reading about the relationships between each of the characters. There's a good bit more alluding to big things happening soon in this one and given there's 4 omnibuses left I figure there's going to start to be an overarching plot line that will start to develop soon. I do really like in this that there are some stories that seem like side plots and it just lets just learn more about the world we're in and the magic systems and stuff like that.

Easily a five star read for me. Volumes 7 to 9 are jammed pack with so much adventure and growth for Watanuki and friends. My favorite chapters have to be the Spider chapters. And I love that volume 9 ends with a new character for Watanuki to befriend.

Each moment with Domeki and Watanuki make my heart throb. Their partnership is freaking that good. Just, looks and actions speak so much more than words.

Contains volumes 7, 8 and 9. Excellent as always, from the big arcs - Watanuki's eye, for example - to the tiniest of stories - like the one about the woman in the sakura tree - they are fascinating and well written. This manga is simply amazing.

I both love the development of these characters and how we don't shy from introducing new I've who can be vital to the story. CLAMP's characters are always so complex and I love this.

This is an amazing series.

Having read several other manga books and authors, I can now say with some authority that CLAMP is a highly talented group of artists and writers. The artwork is simply beautiful! If I ever got a hold of a still (is that the right word?) from this series, I would frame it and hang it up with other artwork in my home--yes, it's that good.
And the storyline is fascinating! You become so attached to the characters and they are constantly developing and changing as the different events shape their lives.

A definite recommend!

The gradual piling up of layers of world building and plot threads allows CLAMP to do some really neat, deep, resonant story telling now that theirs enough for this type of storytelling to work. Much as Grimm's fairy tales come together to create a world and implicitly complement on each other without ever quite explicitly doing so. Beautiful stuff.

Not a whole lot I can say. Art is amazing. One of my favorite art styles in a manga ever. The story is wonderful, whimsical, and at times dark. This is a great manga series and has always been one of my favorites. I highly recommend it if it interests you.
