Ghostly Gossip
By Nellie H. Steele
This is a 100 year old murder and suicide mystery plus. A teen comes to live with her grandmother after the death of parents. Her estranged grandmother takes her in. She lives in a big house that looks like a haunted house. The teen and grandmother start bonding over a story the grandmother is telling, which is similar to their real lives.
They have to work together to deal with the ghosts. Enjoyable read.

3.5

Carly Ravenspell’s parents died and she’s been banished in the boonies to Thornwood Estate and a grandmother she doesn’t know.

I finished this way back in November of 2024 and don’t remember much of it. Pretty sure Carly is a bit of a brat. But she just lost her parents so I cut her some slack. Her grandmother seems nice and the house has secrets. There’s some kind of mystery? And there’s magic involved. Sorry. That’s all I can dig out of the recesses of my noggin. I obviously liked it enough to give it 3.5, so be guided by that.

*I apologize for the lateness of my review. Real Life has been rough the last couple of years.

Seventeen year old Carly has just had her life upended. Following the death of her parents in a car accident, she is sent to live with a grandmother she barely remembers. Angry at the world, Carly is sure she will hate Thornwood Estate and her grandmother, Althea. Used to not being accepted, she’s confused by Althea’s kindness. Finding an enchanting music box in her room, she asks for information about it. Althea tells her she has to hear another story first, the story of Rose & Emma and Maple Mansion…

In the 1970s, Rose, an art restorer, and her niece Emma, are hired for a restoration project at Maple Mansion. Almost immediately, strange happenings are discovered. Rose sees an apparition in her bedroom. Emma & Rose have matching nightmares. Further research leads them to discover a series of deaths and disappearances linked to the house, happening every 22 years. What sinister secrets are held in the house? And what connection does it have to Emma’s mother’s death at Phoenix Hall?

Ghostly Gossip, Nellie H. Steele’s first book in the Whispers of Witchcraft series, uses the story within a story format to draw the reader in. Alternating between present day and the burgeoning relationship between Carly and Althea, and the 1970’s with Emma learning about her powers as a psychic witch. The ghost story is suitably spine tingling and like Carly, we’re anxious for each new revelation. Ms. Steele setting both stories in old mansions and stormy weather just adds to the overall atmosphere. Althea’s understanding and acceptance of Carly’s initial surliness adds heart to the story. Book 2 can’t come fast enough to reveal even more secrets.

This story starts with a tragedy and ends with a to be continued. In between is a ghostly tale perfect for Halloween or a stormy night any time of year. A young girl who’s getting to know her grandmother for the first time in her teens and a mysterious something that’s hinted at but not revealed at least not in this book. It’s definitely spooky but not overtly scary more Goosebumps than Stephen King. The story hooked me from the get go and I read it in a sitting. I’m definitely eager to learn more just like our main character in the book!.

When Carly loses her parents she is sent to Thornwood Estates to live with her Grandmother Althea. Carly finds herself growing close to a Grandmother she barely knew. There is a storm and the power goes out and her Grandmother is telling a ghostly story at Maple Mansion where an evil spirit lurks. It goes back to the 1800 hundreds to the 1940s. The story will keep you on edge and I can't wait for book 2.I highly recommended this book.

This is book one of the Whispers of Witchcraft Cozy Mysteries series and the main character is Carly (Caroline) Ravenspell, who after losing both of her parents, is sent off to live with her Grandma Althea, after her Aunt Pattie refused to take her in because she is a witch, something Carly never knew. She has now been taken from the city just before her final year in high school, away from all of her friends, off to the Thornwood Estate on the edges of the small town of Midnight Hollow, in the middle of nowhere! She only met her gran once years ago and doesn’t know what to expect. What she gets is a woman far more friendly than expected, who does things to make her welcome and even take interest in showing her around. Inviting her to play a game with her, it starts a round of stories about a place called Maple Mansion, where a young woman Rose, takes a job as an in-house art restorer for the absent owners, and has her niece Emma come along to help her. A strange occurrence wakes Rose on the first night, when she is all alone in the house, leaving her thinking she has seen a ghost. When Emma arrives, she doesn’t believe any of it, but soon, other strange things happen and it seems there have been a line through the years, of deaths in the home, some murders, some suicide, but all happening on the grounds or in the house. Emma and Rose try to figure out who they have seen and what the links are, as the figures take them back over a period of time, into the distant past.

Carly wanted to know the story behind the music box, with a raven inside that she found in her room after hearing it playing on her first night, but her gran insists on giving her a few background tales to the house and her family first! It seems Maple Mansion had a number of spirits tied to it unhappily, but also one very aggressive and dangerous spirit as well. Emma is about to discover her family and her own links to the paranormal and the abilities she has inherited as a psychic witch, according to her aunt Rose! Carly wasn’t open to anything like ghosts to start with, but gets very involved in knowing more about the tale and getting to her its end, as the tale takes a few sittings to unravel entirely. A close link to the reality of her own mother’s sudden death and the secret life she held, which Carly had been raised knowing nothing about. It seems her aunt Abbie was right about one thing, her line is that of witches and her gran is preparing her to find out about her full potential and the supernatural world. One tale may have been told and its solution discovered, but Carly has a lot more to learn and accept about the supernatural, as her gran allows her to explore the huge home she now resides in and all of its tales, waiting to see if she is ready to know more! Lots more to come for Carly as she find out the link between the tales and herself no doubt, at some point. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Ghostly Gossip

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is the first book in the Whispers in Witchcraft Cozy Mystery Series and introduces us to Althea and Carly, a grandmother and her granddaughter. To begin with, let me just say that this is NOT your normal ghost story. It begins when we learn that Carly’s parents were suddenly and unexpectedly killed by a drunk driver in an auto accident, leaving Carly abandoned with no close relatives willing to take her in. The only relative willing to accept Carly is her grandmother, Althea, whom Carly has only met once as a young child. Grandma Althea lived alone at Thornwood Estate, in a big, old house out in the boonies, along with a caretaker/driver who lived in a separate house on the grounds. When Carly arrives at the big, old, and spooky mansion, she assumes the worst. Carly soon realizes that her grandmother is different than expected, and a bond begins to form as the two begin to know each other. Althea begins to tell Carly about the history of the house and starts with a story about Rose, a painting restorer, and her niece assistant Emma who, while hired to work on the paintings, both begin to experience strange and supernatural activity. The book’s storyline is then broken down into a story within a story, and the ghostly accounts and experiences dangerously escalate to a dramatic conclusion. Althea informs Carly that there are more ghostly escapades associated with the mansion and the true purpose of Carly being so sensitive to paranormal activity.
As I mentioned before, this is NOT your normal ghost story. Nellie has captured a special concept of expanding a ghost story with a family in turmoil. The character development was well-composed and intriguing, with the grandmother/granddaughter relationship gradually maturing into something more. I felt the plot was somewhat muddled, only because of the multifaceted time period and pairs of women, but that was my own fault. The author published the book with different types of fonts to differentiate the time periods and characters. The story definitely had a dark, haunting side at times, but the clever plot and characters certainly kept me turning pages in anticipation of what was coming next. I can recommend this book as a good cozy ghost story. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Readers Copy.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy and am voluntarily reviewing it. Caroline, or Carly as she prefers to be called, is on her way to live with her father's mother. She had only met her Grandma Althea once. Now that her parents had passed in a accident with a drunk driver and her mother's sister did not want to take her, Carly is off to Thornwood Estate. Carly wanted to hate this place and her grandmother for taking her away from all that she knew. After being forced to spend time with her during a power outage, she realized her grandmother wasn't so bad.

Grandma Althea passed the time by telling Carly about mystery of Maple Mansion. Rose secured a job at the Maple Mansion to restore the art. She was able to bring her niece, Emma, along to stay with her at the mansion for her six-month contract. Rose started seeing strange things right away but discounted them at first. Maybe if Emma saw them, she would have something to worry about. Well, she needed to start worrying but Rose knew something that Emma did not know. She wanted to see how Emma did with the strange occurrences before telling Emma what she suspected. Rose had always hoped that Emma's mother would be the one to tell her about her special abilities.

The strange things kept happening and it was evident that something was trying to get their attention. The clues left were followed by Rose and Emma by talking to towns people and going to the library. The strange things that they found led to mystery deaths at Maple Mansion. Instead of being scared, these two were even more curious and more determined to find out how they could help who was trying to contact them.

This is the first book in this series and I cannot wait to read more stories about Rose and Emma. I really want to see how they connect to Althea and Carly. This is actually a story within a story. Most of the book consisted of Grandma Althea telling Carly about the mystery of Maple Mansion. Thankfully Carly is just as intrigued as readers will be. Hopefully Grandma Althea is ready to tell us more.

This is without a shadow of a doubt a Nellie Steele story. Her DNA is all over it, but at a whole new level.

Gone is the slapstick element and fumbling character’s falling into clues which were big elements in previous books that I have read. Here there is growth of a story teller, and a new and exciting style.

There is still mystery and paranormal themes, still the challenging characters and backgrounds that is Nellie’s stock in trade. But this book is different, almost like he start of a new direction. It is a hugely exciting book 1 of a new series that draws you in, introduces you to the main character’s and some of their stories. It is a very satisfying read with so much promise as to the direction this new set of books may go.

Carley had not realised that she is a witch and following the death of her parents had found herself starting a new life away from everyone she knew and the place she called home. She finds herself about to live with her grandmother in a strange house miles from anywhere.

But she discovers so much of her identity in this book and who her grandmother is, and an introduction to the amazing past and the first of many stories that surround the place that is now home to her.

This is an electrifying introduction to this new world and the journey that we undertake is merely an introduction with the promise of so much more to come.

I really cannot recommend this enough. If you are already a fan of Nellie, this a wonderful step forward. If you have not read her works before, be prepared to be amazed by a master story teller as you are emersed into her world and imagination.

For sure, you will be very happy to have this book as part of your collection.

Enjoy.

In "Ghostly Gossip," Nellie H. Steele debuts the captivating first installment of the Whispers of Witchcraft series, employing a compelling story-within-a-story format that immediately entices readers. Commencing with a tragic event and concluding with an enticing "to be continued," the narrative weaves a ghostly tale that is perfect for Halloween or any stormy night throughout the year.

The novel skillfully alternates between present-day events, unfolding the blossoming relationship between Carly and Althea, and the 1970s, where Emma discovers her powers as a psychic witch. The ghost story, complete with spine-tingling revelations, keeps readers eagerly anticipating each new twist alongside Carly. Steele's choice of setting both narratives in old mansions amid stormy weather enhances the overall atmospheric charm.

A notable aspect is Althea's understanding and acceptance of Carly's initial surliness, injecting a heartfelt dimension into the narrative. From the outset, the story captivates, compelling me to read it in a single sitting.

As a reader, my curiosity is piqued, and I am eager to delve deeper into the stories of Rose and Emma, anticipating how they interconnect with the lives of Althea and Carly. The unique storytelling approach, with Grandma Althea narrating the mystery of Maple Mansion to Carly, adds an intriguing layer. Carly's fascination mirrors that of the readers, creating an engaging synergy. I eagerly await Book 2, anticipating the unraveling of even more secrets, as Grandma Althea prepares to share further revelations. The forthcoming installment can't come soon enough, promising an enthralling continuation of this multifaceted narrative.

I really enjoyed this first book in this new series. Carly, having been recently orphaned and left unwanted by her aunt, travels to live with her grandmother who she only met briefly as a young child. Carly, being a teenager, is very reluctant about the move especially as she doesn't know her grandmother at all, and who didn't even attend her own son's funeral. Carly has lots of preconceived ideas about what her grandmother is going to be like, but these are quickly dismissed.

They begin to develop a bond through the grandmother's story telling of a chilling tale of an aunt and niece and the ghosts they encounter in a huge mansion they are staying in. I have to admit some of the ghost parts were a bit scary and creepy, but great all the same. I love what was revealed through this story.

I loved this story within a story and is not a style I had read before, but like Carly I was so very eager to find out more about what was happening at Maple Mansion and couldn't put it down. And there's definitely a big reason to why Althea told this particular story to Carly and I have a feeling we might find out more in the next book! I can't wait for that one!

I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout, but this review is my own, honest one.

Carly didn’t realize that she was a witch until her parent’s were in a car accident and her aunt, couldn’t take her in because of her powers. So she got sent off to her grandmother, Althea. So she had to move immediately there and leave all her friends behind. She could only see them on social media. The mansion is named Thornwood and it has a lot of secrets. Althea’s handyman, Lester is who took the car to get Carly, which is short for Caroline. Althea tries really hard to connect with Carly. It isn’t until she starts talking about stories that the girl listens. I was entranced by the story within the story as well. I think the stories are to prepare Carly for her powers. I really enjoyed the story and how Althea treats Carly. I also felt bad for Carly because she was leaving before her senior year of school. Being 17 is hard enough without being the new girl for senior year.

I can’t wait to read the next book in the series to find out what happens when she starts school. Plus, I need more of the stories- they are so interesting.

Ghostly Gossip is the first book in the Whispers of Witchcraft Cozy Mysteries series by Nellie H. Steele. This is a quick and easy paranormal novella that introduces us to Carly who has recently moved in with her estranged grandmother after the death of her parents. Carly's life has been uprooted, and she has many hesitations about living in a new town with a grandmother she barely knows. As she settles in, she feels more at home than she ever thought possible. When the power goes out, Carly's grandmother begins to tell her a story from the past. She finds herself on the edge of her sear, needing to know what became of Emma and Rose. As we piece out the mystery surround Rose, Emma, and the mansion they are staying at, we learn that there may be more to this story than we realized.

This is a great cozy fantasy story, suitable for all ages. It is a wonderful story to curl up and read on a gloomy afternoon. I look forward to more in this series so we can finish unraveling Rose and Emma's story! Excellent Read!

entertaining paranormal cozy mystery series

This is an entertaining paranormal cozy mystery series. A cast of characters in an entertaining surrounding. A young girl that has been raised in high society by her parents who are rich and is living highlife during the summer between her junior and senior year of high school. Sadly our parents are killed in a car crash and her life is going to be turned upside down. She is off to live with her grandmother who she only seen a couple times and not since she was five years old. There’s a little bit more story to the hell away you’ll have to read but she’s not happy it’s a bit out in the boonies instead of fancy neighborhood and a big city. Just leave all her friends Change schools towns etc. She’s gonna meet and move in with some creepy old grandma she’s never even known for the most part. Soon find out her grandmother is definitely different but different isn’t always bad so read on and see how the relationship begins. As well as where the story takes them.

This was a fun start to a new series 😃 It follows Carly, a high school teenager who moves in with her grandmother after the sudden death of her parents. Sullen and moody, Carly has no intention of warming up to her grandmother, but the two of them quickly become paranormal sleuths in the ghosts and history of their new home.

I liked the relationship between Carly and her grandmother, which is just starting to develop. It’s set up as a story-within-a-story, so one scene might be Carly and her grandmother eating pancakes and the next could be about a woman and her niece from the 1970’s. The house has a lot of secrets, and I’m excited to see more of the paranormal world. If you liked the TV show The Ghost Whisperer, then these books are for you. Creepy, mysterious, a little cozy, and a lot of fun.

Clues abound as to how this series will develop and I can’t wait to read more! The main plot concerns Carly who, after the death of her parents, moves to live with her grandmother, Althea, at Thornwood. Family secrets mean that Carly has only met her grandmother once before and the relationship was never encouraged by Carly’s mother. However, Carly soon discovers that her grandmother is nothing like she expected; in fact they have quite a lot in common. There is mystery surrounding the music box in Carly’s room but Althea says the story about it will only be told after Carly has heard other stories. She is told the story of Rose and Emma and the hauntings at Maple Mansion. Surely this is just a story, or is it? Is Carly being trained to accept the supernatural? I need to know what happens next!.

‘A Haunting We will Go . . .

Caroline Ravenspell (“Carly”), at the age of 17, was sent to live with her grandmother Althea Ravenspell when her Aunt Pattie refuses to take her in after her parents die in an accident. Carly is not at all pleased to be uprooted and sent here. She doesn’t even know Althea! But her grandmother tells her supernatural stories that catch her attention, and things don’t seem so bad after all.

This is the start of a new series for the reader. There is something scary and unidentified lurking in the shadows that we are left to think about. The story-within-a-story will keep the reader fully engaged in what is going on. So jump right in and tag along to figure out where this series is heading. It promises to keep those little chill-bumps running up and down your arms as we tag along to see where the author is leading us!

I had trouble getting through the first two chapters of this book. I re-read them, twice, before I really could get into the story. The voice of Carly, one of the main characters in this book, just wasn’t what I expected. In my experience teens don’t sound like this—ever!! But, I am very glad I kept on reading because the book just got better and better.

This is the story of Carly, losing her parents tragically, and going to live with her grandmother Althea, at the family estate Thornwood.

I really appreciated the support Althea gave to her granddaughter, whom she had previously had no relationship with—due to Carly’s parents having asked Althea to back off.

In the end, it was an absolute good start to a new series by this author. Can’t wait for book two.

I really enjoyed reading Ghostly Gossip. The characters are intriguing and well written, and I loved the story within a story as Carly's grandmother tells stories about the house's past. The author does a good job of balancing the past with the present, especially showing the developing relationship between Carly and her grandmother, and all of the changes that brings to Carly- not just the big ones, but the subtle changes as well. Overall, this was a captivating story with characters I look forward to following in the next book in the series. I highly recommend Ghostly Gossip for fans of paranormal cozy mysteries and strong female characters.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a complimentary copy. Carly's parents were killed by a drunk drive and now she has to go live with her Grandmother Althea, whom she has only met once. Carly is upset as she is leaving everything she knows and going to a new place where she does not know anyone. Althea and Carly are both grieving the loss and they just happen to be exactly what they need for each other. Carly finds a music box in her room and asks her Grandmother the story behind it. Alteha tells her she must first learn about the history of Maple Mansion and its past occupants Emma and Rose. Althea and Carly grow closer as they share the past. Cannot wait to read book 2.

A Story In Four Parts

Meet Carly, a girl who is still getting used to losing her parents and going to her grandmothers house to live, meet Rose who is Carly’s grandmother who seems like Theo ly family member who wanted Carly to live with her. When Carly arrives at Roses house they get into a story that Rose tells Carly about other things that have happened at the mansion they are staying at and the people who had some extreme things happen to them in the mansion. While Rose and Carly get to know each other we also get to know other people who have been at the mansion by way of Roses stories. So I recommend you get these books and try to figure out what is truly going on in that mansion, we would all like to know.

Ghostly Gossip: A Haunted House Witchy Paranormal Cozy Mystery is book #1 in the Whispers of Witchcraft Cozy Mysteries by Nellie H. Steele.

Carly’s parents have died and her aunt is sending her to live with a grandmother she doesn’t know. She is determined that she will be miserable but her grandmother starts winning her over by telling a story that catches Carly’s interest. I also was drawn in. Carly, her grandmother and Lester are likable characters. I have my suspicions on what this leading to and I look forward to the story continuing.

Carly just discovered she's a witch. She's 17 and an orphan and her aunt doesn't want her. She's to be sent to live with her grandmother Althea on Thornwood Estate in the town of Midnight Hollow. Her life is over. Her grandmother isn't what she thought she'd be. Her first night is a very stormy night. No electricity so candles and a game. It's a game built around the house. Will the story her grandmother weaves be enough to get through to her shell she's encased herself in? Will she find out anything interesting?
A fascinating story within a story.

Heartfelt emotions open the story as a suddenly orphaned granddaughter is taken to live at her Grandmothers house. But she soon finds out that living there won’t be so bad as stories are told, questions are answered and family history comes alive in the retelling of what happened every 22 years. Odd disappearances, whispering voices and hidden clues will have you knowing things do go bump in the night. Gripping til the end, highly recommended for haunting lovers, with an end having you wanting more!.

It's a little slow to start but once it got going I couldn't put it down! Carly's parents are killed by a drunk driver and sent to live with her grandmother whom she had only met once previously. How do you get through to a surly teenager who is grieving the death of her parents and a grandmother also grieving the death of her son? The grandmother tells stories about the house Maple Mansion and their relationship starts to grow. I found it such an interesting and fascinating tale I really could not put it down and I can't wait to read the next book!!.

Carly's parents die and so she finds out her aunt doesn't want her so she goes to live with her grandmother that she only remembers meeting one time so she is sullen when she gets to her new home, but she starts to like the place when her grandmother starts to tell her a story. The story is about a young woman who is given a job to catalog items in a home and she is allowed to bring her niece to help her and then they find that the house has some ghosts and Carly while listening to the story is starting to notice little things that are starting to add up with her new home. Really good book.

A story within a story. A teenager loses her parents in an accident and is sent to live with her estranged grandmother. A grandmother she was not allowed to know. She is hurt and angry and scared. This book had a lot going for it. It is the story of a special grandmother and her budding relationship with her 17 year old granddaughter. The grandmother breaks the ice by telling a long and fascinating ghost story. She tells it in pieces, but only if the granddaughter wishes to continue. I think she is telling her granddaughter their family history, which would be unbelievable if just blurted out. I am looking forward to the second book when it comes out.
