I remember getting this book as a kid. I wanted to be a firefighter so badly when I grew up. After reading it numerous times over the years, Fireman Jim is still a joy to read. The black and white photos capture life as a New York City Firefighter in the 1980's like no other children's book can. I hope Jim and his fellow firefighters are okay if they're still around today. 15 years after the September 11th 2001 terror attacks, this book is a living time capsule for the FDNY. The job has changed drastically over the years, as has the world of the firefighter in general but the valor, commitment and the sacrifice of these brave men and women endures!

Fireman Jim, by Roger Bester, is a unique book. This book walks through a daily life of Jim, the fireman from New York City. From the moment Jim walks through the doors of the firehouse to through the many fire duties of the day to the end, the reader is able to step into the shoes of Jim.
This book could be beneficial for little children for them to see and think of things and activities that are usually not thought of. A teacher or SLP could then use inferencing and "what would you do" questions to see what a little child would think. This book could also be used for safety. After reading this book a teacher could talk about all of the step that are need when there is a fire and what a child should do.
