This wonderful debut novel and burgeoning mystery series begins with a murder, a self defence killing and an attempt to end Sloane West’s life. It also opens up a world of magic and secrets that Sloane’s mother had kept from her. The family she never knew she had are dying off at an alarming rate. Sloane will need all her experience as a private investigator to find out who is trying to kill her and why.

Lies are Forever is an enjoyably well written novel with plenty of twists and turns to keep the pages turning. Downer does well in creating a magical world (Cheryl, my GR friend, beware!) that we see revealed through Sloane’s eyes. Mixing the magical with a whodunnit is ingenious resulting in an intriguing story. The mystery is resolved by the end of the book but there are so many questions still unanswered as well as a possible romance for Sloane.

I am anxiously looking forward to the next book in this series.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.

Sloane is private investigator who is mourning her mother even though they had a complicated relationship because her mother was so secretive. Sloane is annoyed when her ex and ex best friend send her invitation but she can’t dwell on that because someone wants her dead when she learns she had grandparents who left her everything. She decides to go village of Denwick where her family is from to learn who wants her dead and to get justice for Harold who came to tell her about her family. While there she learns she a Wicca and her cousin Dorothea who is high priestess of the family coven and her cat who she calls Bear aka Elvina was her mother familiar is now hers. While investigating she meets Rose who she feels an attraction to as she dives into honing her magic she learns their other supernatural but as a rule can’t know who it’s is. This was a good read it’s left it opened ended in a way because we still don’t know who Sloane father is why her mother really shield them from everyone and the romance with her and Rose and nice twist with Rose.

Narrated by Ann Sprinkle, Lies Are Forever was a fabulous start to the Sloan West Mystery series. This diverse story has a cozy paranormal vibe with a private investigator vibe.

Sloan is quite the character. She’s divorced, dealing with an invitation from her ex and ex-best friend for their weddings. She is mourning her mother, and a tad bored. So she packs her car, along with her cat Bear, and heads to the village of Denwick, where the estate she inherited is. While she is there, she’ll investigate the murder of Harold, the solicitor.

Sloan soon discovers her family is Wicca and that other supernaturals exist. Her neighbor is a wealth of information, including revealing that her cat is quite unique and she’s not the only target in a murderous plan. Someone also wants her long-lost cousin, the High Priestess of her family’s coven.

What a fun listen. The story hooked me from the start. While Sloan doesn’t have the most bubbly personality, she felt like a jaded ex-cop. Her mother was very secretive and we soon learn why. I appreciated Sloan’s love of an excellent whiskey and felt like she took things in stride as they unfolded.

The townfolk are interesting and most are members of the four founding families who settled in Denwick. We see the budding of a romance with the local tavern’s daughter, Rose. Sloan starts to hone her magic and things set up nicely for the series. We see some closure as to the murder, but are left with many unanswered questions. Like who was Sloan’s father? Why didn’t Sloan’s mother tell her anything about who they are?

Fans of paranormal mysteries will want to grab their earbuds and listen to this one. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

That was both a nice intriguing read & good discovery. (new author to me).
I found the characters interesting and really liked the twisty plot.
I'm just not very found of the MC's drinking and swearing habbits. But lil detail, it won't stop me to read the sequels because I'm curious about where this magical world will lead us & hopefully Sloane'll work on those habbits of hers in the next books ...

Goodreads ate my review so here we go again.

I saw this book listed as a Goldie finalist in the Romantic Suspense category and bought it without reading the blurb in detail. Private Investigator tracking down killer and I’m all in. Good thing I didn’t read the reviews as I’m solidly in the “never read paranormal” camp. I was fully invested in figuring whodunnit and why when I realized Sloan West’s knowledge of her relatives past and present was very much a lie. What awaited Sloane in her mother’s home town on Vancouver Island sent she and I on a steep paranormal learning curve and I totally enjoyed the ride.

This was a fun action filled paranormal ride with many potential locals keen to kill Sloane for various reasons. There is some world building and a lot of families who may or may not be who they seem to be but throughout the story distant cousin Dorothea “don’t call me Dot” is there to guide Sloan as she looks for answers. There is potential for romance but the focus of this book was on the mystery.

A great ride and a series I look forward to reading.

Sloane West is a former NYC officer and works as a private investigator. A lawyer from Canada comes to tell her that she has an inheritance from grandparents that she didn’t know existed. She arrives in Denwick, a small Canadian village and learns that mother kept her hidden from family and friends alike. And more than that she is a protector for her family coven. In a short week her world is turned upside down as she learns her grandparents and mother were murdered. As a PI she thinks she can find the killer.

I love mysteries but don’t usually venture into the world of fantasy. I enjoyed this story and world building is great. Having Sloane be unaware allows the reader to learn along with her the role of magical creatures and powers. If you like paranormal mysteries you will enjoy this debut novel. It seems to be the beginning of a series and while the case is solved the ending is left open for further adventures.

Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC! I’ve read more than 230 middle grade and children’s books this year, so it is nice to sink into an adult mystery. My comfort zone is mystery and thriller, so the addition of the sci-fi/fantasy element is newer to me.

In this book, Sloane West is an ex-New York City cop turned private investigator who has a mystery dumped right into her lap in the first chapter. The recent death of her mother – and her grandparents who she never knew – lead her to a peaceful Canadian town where she finds not only a love interest but also vast supernatural powers (thus, the introduction of witches, shapeshifters, and other powers!).

The author pulled it off. The clues for what’s to come are weaved in and make me want to keep reading. The cast of characters is diverse and engaging. And, can we talk about the love interest? The normalizing of lesbian relationships is (finally!) happening, and this text does a great job of it. I found myself wondering what Rose was doing all day when she wasn’t at the tavern (turns out you have some clues by the end!). I wanted this relationship to be developed a bit more.

The best part is that this is Book 1 of the Sloane West Mystery series. We are set up for more by the end. My hope is that an entire book with Jane’s story appears! If you love mystery, fast pace, interesting characters, and some magical elements, or if you want something new this book is for you! #LiesAreForever

Ok, so my most favourite things in the world are wrapped up in this sapphic mystery. 1. It has WLW in it. 2. It's a murder investigation. 3. Witches! Though, Dorathea will say "Wiċċe, not witch, dear. Such a common term."

I loved everything about this book. From page one I was hooked on Sloane's no-nonsense attitude and feisty temperament. I loved how each page had something to keep me engaged and wanting more.

I loved all the characters, each with their own quirks and mannerisms that made up Sloane's found family. My favorite was Dorathea, Sloane's distant cousin and high priestess of the West Coven. She's a stickler for names and hates it when people shorten them, and she definitely doesn't let Sloane get away with much. She is followed closely by Elvina, Sloane's familiar, who until recently Sloane thought was her very intuitive cat called Bear.

The investigation was so well done that I had no idea who did it until it was revealed. It meant that it had me wondering who it could be all through the book, which made me want to not put it down until I did find out.

And Rose. Oh, Rose! Our redheaded love interest. Though the relationship wasn't the focus of this book, I loved the way the author made the two grow closer. I can't wait to see where their relationship ship goes after *that* scene.

Thanks to Bella Books and Netgalley for a copy of the ebook. This review is left voluntarily.

this was amazing I give the narrator three stars she wasn't bad but I really wanted more I don't know it's just something about her voice that was missing there's definitely different voices but I just felt like something was missing but the plot though the story The mystery this story is like a open ending type of story so the mystery is half finished and half open is we kind of left on like that open ending kind of feel the character is somewhat settled and she's preparing to take the next step in her new journey.

the supernatural elements oh man the way this author blended supernatural magic werewolves vampires hell I don't even know if werewolves exist but I'm assuming they do because we got shapeshifters instead I don't know what other type of magical creatures exist I'm curious to know if there's going to be ogres dragons exist in this story so I'm curious to see what else magical creatures do exist but it's kind of like Harry Potter mixed with charmed mixed with a mystery pi story and it works.

the families last name is the West and in order for them to be at full power the family has to have five members of magical descent in order for them to be at their full power and when they're at their full power when they have five members they're strong so if that number is low they're not that powerful and that really reminded me of charmed each sister is powerful in their own right but they cannot defeat any evil by themselves they have to come together as a team.

so that reminded me of that another shout out was familiars animal familiars that have their own personality that can talk that really reminded me of Serena the old version and the new version honestly there's so many good pieces of really good shows that I think this author and probably books that she's probably read so this is just a really good put together mystery and I'm looking forward to the next book I got to know what happens next there's still some stuff left open that we don't know and a romance is on the horizon I absolutely love Rose I was up here just like that what is she? what is she? she is a supernatural being I'm not going to spoil it and say what she is but I was guessing the whole entire time at first I thought she was a succubus but she's not and that's the only one you going to get from me read the book find out what she is and enjoy guessing too.

so I can't wait to see that relationship continues it's a very slow burn in my opinion it's a slow burn with the understanding that they like each other there's some sexual attention the only thing they did in here was kiss and it took a long time for that kiss to happen and that's it so it's a very mature relationship it's not a fast lust into bed I'm in love with you type of thing and there is attraction the author handled it is really she possibly could so I enjoyed that not too slow but not too fast and I can't wait to see this world continue to open up continue to develop as we get to know the West family and as they continue on their journey.

Immersed in a captivating world of magic and mystery, this book weaves a spellbinding tale featuring witches, shapeshifters, vampires, and more. The author skillfully constructs a secretive realm where even the magical beings are in the dark about each other's identities, adding layers of intrigue to an already compelling narrative.

Sloane West, an ex-NYC cop turned private investigator, becomes the central figure in this mystical adventure as she navigates grief over her mother's timely death. The arrival of a stranger propels her into the heart of a murderous plot, leading her to the tranquil Canadian village of where she learns more about herself. Here, Sloane discovers not only her own vulnerability but also learns of her long-lost cousin, the High Priestess of her family's coven.

The story unfolds with a perfect blend of suspense and supernatural elements, as Sloane is confronted with the dual challenge of solving a murder while embracing her newfound connection to witchcraft. The narrative brilliantly explores Sloane's internal struggle as she grapples with the choice between accepting her role as a protector or shying away from the magical legacy she is just beginning to comprehend. As the book concludes, the anticipation for future installments is high, promising readers a continuation of this grand, mysterious journey.
There’s just so much more to discover about Sloane and her lineage as well as whose behind all this chaos.

I got an ARC of Book 2 in this series. I read the first page and thought I would better understand who everyone one was if I read the first book. So I bought it. And of course I read it.
It would be fair to say that it took me by surprise. I thought I was reading a traditional detective series - I quite enjoy those.
When magic and witches (yes, I know wicce) happened I was both surprised and alarmed. I should really read the blurb about books but sometimes I just dive straight in. I don't read books like that.
But I enjoyed it so much I read it until I finished - several hours after my mid week lights out should have happened.
It has all sorts of creatures in it, an alternative world accessed by through a crypt, and different types of 'Magicals' living in our world 'undercover' so as not to alarm the 'Nogicals' (that's you and me - unless you are a 'magical').

The creativity required to not only imagine another world and all of the different types of beings, but to convey it in words with a coherent timeline and story. Amazing.
I especially love that when learning magic, everything is sounded out phonetically by the characters so that I can know how to pronounce them.
There is of course a love story running through the story. And a detective story.
I need more of this type of book in my life!

Great urban fantasy debut
This debut novel by Canadian author C. Jean Downer, really excels at world-building. We discover the hidden magical world of witches, protectors and more through the eyes of Sloane who is clueless about her magical heritage and has to quickly gear up to defend herself and solve a murder case.
Sloane, the private investigator from New York, has to travel to the Canadian West Coast and a remote village to claim her heritage in more than one sense - and to discover who is on a murder spree. The magical world Downer is painting is rich and detailed and a joy to read. I had fun esp. with Dorothea and Elvina - only the excessive consumption of alcohol by Sloane was a bit off-putting. The ongoing investigation and the urban fantasy are well-blended with a pinch of (budding) romance thrown into the mix.
The start has a lot of action and information, but then the story settles down and unfolds at a more tranquil pace. This is book one of a series and the immediate story arc and the murder investigation are resolved, but I look forward to more installments of this promising new urban fantasy author.

I received an ARC via netgalley. The review is left voluntarily.

This was an intriguing story where P.I. Sloane West found herself wrapped up in the mystery of who killed the man who had brought her the news of an inheritance, and also the mystery behind the realization that she was actually a witch and why she never knew who her father was.

In order to claim her inheritance she had to travel to the village of Denwik in British Columbia. There, she met her cousin, Dorothea, the high priestess of the coven. This is when delightful magic began. Her cat’s name wasn’t Bear, as she had always called her, but was really Elvina, who was there to train and teach her. I loved how Elvina communicated with her telepathically! Objects would fly, such as how the tea kettle moved through the air to pour tea into their cups. Sloane learned spells and such things as opening her third eye, teleportation and more such intriguing things.
There was also the hope and promise of a romance with Rose, the Tavern owner’s daughter.

This book was such a well-written story that easily flowed as all the characters’ roles fell into place and the mystery of the murder worked to be solved. I really admire this creative author who entertained us, giving us lots of things to think about.

As someone who doesn't usually read fantasy, Lies Are Forever was a bit out of my comfort zone. In a former life, I taught junior high and read the Harry Potter books. I also enjoyed the TV program Bewitched, so I'm somewhat familiar with witches and similar themes.

What I remember most about Bewitched is that my favorite characters were Endora and Aunt Clara—Endora was snarky and Clara innocuously inept. Given that I write dark comedies, it's not surprising that I gravitated toward Downer's ancillary characters, Dorathea and Elvina. Their passive-aggressive snideness and barbs toward MC Sloane West were right up my alley. I also like Sloane; she is flawed, smart, and intelligent.

Downer excels at world-building, and I was impressed that she kept me guessing the killer's identity until the end of the story. Since I am less familiar with the genre and its terms (spells and such), I had to pay closer attention than usual to keeping the characters and magical elements straight in my mind. Now that I have a solid understanding of this well-constructed magical world, I look forward to reading the other books in the series.

This book introduces Sloane West and is labelled as Book One, so having read it, I’m now waiting for Book Two. Sloane is an ex-New York cop who has anger issues and is mourning her recently dead mother, with whom she had a complicated relationship.

A lawyer turns up in Sloane’s office telling her of an inheritance from the Canadian family she knew nothing about. So far so cliche but Ms Downer takes us into a world of Wicca and spells and deception and very cleverly creates a plot with many red herrings and potential suspects.

Sloane works with her cat and her cousin to find the person killing seemingly randomly. Add in a priceless painting and a love interest and alternative worlds and the whole story races along. Sloane is credible, likeable and acts exactly as you’d expect an angry ex-NY cop suddenly confronted by protection spells, moving objects and books that want to be read, would act. I liked her a lot and look forward to spending more time in her company.

New author for me

I started out reading the book but switched over to the Kindle Assistive Reader function. I don't really like the function, but it's the only way to listen to my books. I thought that a new character, Doretta, had been introduced, so I looked in the book and found out the function didn't know how to pronounce "Dorothea." 🙁

Anyway, I enjoyed the story and liked the MC, Sloane. The paranormal characters and blurb about the book, especially in the mystery genre, were mostly what I've been reading for about the last year. Sloane's mother kept a lot of secrets from her for her whole life after when her mother was tragically killed, she found out her family life was a complete lie. The novel revealed the truth little by little, and accidental deaths were discovered to be murders. The discovery of an inheritance became an investigation of several murders.

It was a decent read and I will eventually read the next book in the series.

I did not want this story to end! I felt totally immersed in the world built by the author. The plot was as magical as the world of characters. I love the mystery; the twists that kept me guessing.
To say that this is a real “page-turner” of a story doesn’t do it justice, IMHO. I never give spoilers, but I think this is a book every fan of paranormal fiction will enjoy. If you love the magical world, I believe you will want to read Lies Are Forever.
The chemistry between the MC, Dorothea, her cousin, and Elvina, her familiar (remember, no spoilers) is truly wonderful to read. Mystery, suspense, humour, and imagination are only a few descriptors I’d use to describe this story. Just sayin’.

Sloane West PI heads up to Canadian village Denwick, to investigate the deaths of her grandparents as well as get away from her exes wedding.

Hitting town she discovers her mother kept many secrets from her, and that there's a inheritance worth killing for.

More of a fantasy novel than a mystery, but I found it pretty good. Sloan is a interesting main character, and the investigation went interesting places. The supporting cast was also entertaining.

The one downside of it being book one of a series is there's dangling plot threads, I assume saved for the next book. But I did find the conclusion satisfying.

Imagine being told you inherited your grandparents home and meet someone who is later killed along with the hired hand.

Add finding out she and her family are witches, the her cat is her familiar who can talk to her… and we are off to the races.

My main gripe with this novel is the pacing, and the villain's motivation which was unconvincing. To be fair, the novel had a lot to cover - magical creatures, small village characters and vibe, the mystery, the budding romance. An interesting mix, but a lot of information to process. Perhaps an element of urgency in the main character's quest would have helped hook my attention.

Slone West is a private investigator grieving her mother’s death, when she gets a visit from a solicitor regarding her family’s estate. This revelation propels the story into an exploration of long-buried family secrets and a realm of magical beings. The mystery intertwines with the revelation of the fantasy aspects of the world. Some aspects of the magic systems left me confused, especially in terms of hierarchy. Knowing this was the first in a series, I hope future books shed more light on the magical systems. I found this kinda slow and on the timid side. Although the story was about magic and shifters, I felt there wasnt really a whole lot of either. Maybe it's a slow ease into the series, i dont know. The writing as a whole was good, just something about the story missed the mark for me.
