L.M. Pruitt has been reading since before she can remember, and writing nearly as long. She fell in love with New Orleans after spending one week there, and visits the city as often as her schedule permits--which isn't nearly often enough. She is the best selling author of the Jude Magdalyn series, the Moon Rising series, the Frankie Post series, and the Winged series. She makes her home in Florida.
I feel like this story has been dragging on and on for way too long at this point. I almost gave up on it multiple times while reading this book because at this point, I am just like, “Come on with it already.” But I’ve already invested this much time in the series, and I’m not a quitter... plus there are still 4 more books in the series left to read. Surely something interesting must be about to happen soon. Now, while about 50% of this book was just wasted space and people sitting around talking and performing actions that could have easily been summed up in a paragraph or two, the other 50% of the book was actually pretty cool. In fact, the ending threw me for a loop and it totally came across as the entire end of the series. So now I am clueless about what is about to happen next. Are we going to be following the children around or something? I can’t decide if this is a good idea or not...
This is the concluding book the 6 part Winged series: Winged, Uprising, Lost, Hunt, Alliance and Battle. This is not a standalone book. Do yourself a huge favor and do not read this book without reading the others first. But do read them!
In this book Joanne is still recovering from the effects of the mental breakage and relapse, but that doesn’t stop battles with the Fallen and the possible end of the world.
What I liked: As always, Pruitt draws you in with her characters. I am a sucker for a good character, and this book is full of them. Joanne’s relationships with her men are maturing, and I appreciated how the love scenes take the tone from the story rather than vice-versa. The love scenes were more on the sweet than the spicy side as some of the past scenes have been, and it works.
Sometimes authors allow series to dribble on into infinity when they really should have stopped much earlier, but it was great to see that this series had a definite arc and end.
Also, as always, the humor. The series deals with heavy topics, and the humor, while sometimes grim and macabre, really makes this book in particular a much better read.
There were very few proofing errors in this manuscript. This is a miracle with self-published authors. I feel like sending Pruitt a thank-you letter for not making me plow through their, there and they’re hell. Again.
What made me stop: While most of the time it was easy to become lost in the story, sometimes you can see the gears grinding underneath. There were places where it was easy to see author working hard to incorporate some element or place that was researched.
I will try not to give anything away, but if you hate even vague hinty spoilers, skip over this paragraph. I thought the ending was a bit too deus ex machina. (And here is where the author and all the other readers yell at me, “EXACTLY! Idiot. Haven’t you been reading the series!?!”- don’t worry guys, I am an idiot, but I have a point here). The buildup was great, but the ending was…too easy? too abrupt? I’m not saying everyone makes it, and there’s definite hardship there, but I’ve been struggling with this since my first read-through. Am I just sad that it’s done? My second read-through, I actually liked the ending better, but there were elements that were just a little too pat.
Overall: Battle is a good book and well worth your purchase and time reading. And let’s face it, if you’ve read the rest of the series, you’ll be reading Battle. There were other books in the series that I liked better, but this series as a whole is one of my favorites and has put this author on my auto-buy list.
Note: I was given an advanced copy of this book to read for an honest review.
Joanne, Michael, Raphael, and the rest of the gang have certainly had their share of trials, ups and downs, and suffered enough loss to last more than one lifetime, but it isn't over until it is over. The big Battle with Azazel is on the horizon and everyone knows it, they just don't know when, where, and how bad it will be. The waiting is worse than the fighting.
Joanne is still suffering some memory loss after her mental break from being held in captivity, though she is functioning much better than before. But that doesn't mean all is well in the camp. She still has trust issues between her and her team. It isn't because she is un-trustworthy, or has problems trusting them, it is more because her memory of their friendship is gone and she is having a hard time re-building those relationships.
Pruitt takes these issues, along with the most bizarre love triangle I've ever seen and makes it all work. Along with weaving in a battle of literally biblical proportions, and discussing religion and a Power That Is without being preachy and religious. That is a delicate tightrope act that can either be done well or can crash and burn. Pruitt did an amazing job.
The sex was a lot more vanilla in Battle. Now don't get me wrong, I don't think even vanilla sex with either Raphael or Michael could ever be boring - hello, archangels here. It fit with the story. With their world falling down around their ears, sometimes literally sometimes figuratively, they all needed the reminder that there was beauty and love. So I should say there was more making love (and I kinda hate that term for some reason) than crazy wild monkey sex like there was in previous books. But it fit.
And yay Raphael wasn't neglected! I had begun to feel bad for him, and was about to offer to go pick up the pieces and comfort him in my own way. But Joanne has finally figured out the balance in her weird relationships with the men she loves (I am going to take a minute here and still be shocked how Pruitt could make me hate a character that I thought was not redeemable and still make be love him with such a passion - oh Michael) and make it work. And they have all made it work. And it isn't weird, because it just works. For them. I can't explain it.
And while I won't tell you who lives or dies, if anyone, I will say that although everything wraps up quite nicely there are some lose ends left dangling that I hear could be made into a spin-off series in 2014. So be looking for that. I know I will!
Why must all good things end in "Battle"? The WInged series has taken readers on one hell of a fantastic roller coaster ride! From the very first book, Winged, we were introduced to an amazing world of archangels and the winged - each book taking us deeper and deeper into the trials and tribulations of Joanne, Raphael, Michael, and the rest of the group.
Battle is the final journey of this series. Everyone knows the end is coming - the final face off with Azazel and the Fallen is inevitable. Will Joanne regain her memories? Will she be able to suppress her fears of Azazel long enough to help her friends & lovers do what must be done? L.M. Pruitt takes us on this last ride to answer these and many other questions we've all been left pondering throughout the series.
It was kind of weird at first to see how toned down the sex scenes were this go round, but Pruitt had a method to her creative madness. Every touch, glance, word spoken made the story that much more intense. Sometimes you just have to succumb to emotion of the things going on...leading to honest, heartfelt lovemaking.
It was really great to see Raphael be a part of everything this time as well. I was beginning to get a little frustrated with Joanne falling all over herself for Michael, but yet not being emotionally fair to Raphael. Granted, she loves them both, but to me she was only showing it to one of them.
Battle brought the whole Winged series full circle and wrapped it up in a way that leaves you wanting more, knowing there will be more (to an extent), but also the satisfaction of knowing you have just completed one of the most amazing series of 2013!
What a conclusion to what has become one of my favorites series. A feast for angel fans!!
What I liked: The focus was all on the upcoming Battle and everything leading up to it. The sex scenes reflected more love making rather than wild sex. Yes, I said that. The relationships between Joanne, Raphael and Michael are more in keeping with the tone of this novel. It's about the love and the connections between the characters.
What was really fantastic was that Ms Pruitt stayed true to the changes in Joanne's character. She's not magically "cured" from one book to the next. The problems from Alliance are still present and everyone is trying to deal with them. Joanne most of all.
What I didn't like: I've been a Raphael fan from the beginning and occasionally I felt he got the short end of the stick but, as I've progressed through the series, I've changed my mind. I think it's more the nature of Raphael's personality to accept things as they are.
This final novel in the Winged series ties up all the knots but opens the door to a new series, hopefully beginning in May 2014. I know I can't wait!!
This is an e-book only and is reasonably priced at $4.99
Needless to say, you need to start with the first book, Winged, and progress through to Battle to get the full effect of this series.
After what happened in Alliance I have desperately wanted to read this book and personally was not disappointed. From the first chapter you are drawn into the Winged world again and only pop out for food and water. Pruitt has this style of writing that keeps you reading and reading until 2 in the morning.
Battle starts off with the aftermath of Alliance still present in the characters and impact of their decisions. And it is a physically and emotional roller-coaster from there for the characters and myself. Joanne learning who she truly is again and the feelings she has for Raphael and Michael. The war that is brewing around the corner and Azazel breathing down their necks. Like the other Winged books there are perfectly written sexy scenes between Jo and her Archangels (Team Raphael) and fight scenes that have you holding your breath.
I will not spoil anything but the ending can only be seen (read) to believe. Can not wait to read and emerge myself in the spin off series and Pruitts other work. This is a fantastic ending to an amazing series, a true hidden gem. Just a side reminder that this is book 6, and you really have to read the first 1-5 to ensure everything is understood.
The Epic adventure continues in this stunning finale..... I have been following the WINGED series since the beginning, and I have grown to love and admire many of the characters through the twists and turns and drama of this fight for Good against Evil. As book lovers, we know that delicious feeling of finding a book that is so enjoyable that you wish it wouldn't end, and that's what the WINGED series has been for me. So knowing that this would be the last installment featuring many of this beloved cast, I found the reading of BATTLE bittersweet. In L.M. Pruitt's trademark style, BATTLE is full of titillating action, adventure and "on the edge of my seat" excitement and is paired with an ending that is not only intriguing but unexpected as well. So, if you have been following this tale of Angels and the WINGED, I highly recommend this anticipated finale! Thanks L. M. Pruitt for another great story! (I am missing Joanne and her friends already.... Guess that means it's time to reread the series!)
I recived this book for free for an honest review. I had to buy it cause it would not download to my kindle. thats ok cause it was worth it. I love the winged series and am sad that this is the last one till the spin off. the only thing i didnt like about this book is the ending it left me with unanswered questions. hopefully those get answers in the spin off. it is still in my top 5 fav series. I have read all of L.M. Pruitt's books and will buy any new ones she releases. If you are looking to read a book that you feel you are living in this is the series for you, it has it all love, hate, addiction, sadness, humor, friendship, it has it all, this series i will reread manytimes and never get tired of it.
I have laughed, I have cried and I have shaken my fists in rage while reading this series. And I loved every second of it! This book was the piece de resistance! So many questions answered and so many loose ends tied up. This was exactly the ending this fantastic series needed. Joanne, Michael & Raphael are finally ready for the battle to end all battles. The best part is in the end... not a single thing is in anyone's control. If you haven't started this series I just don't understand what you're waiting for. It's unlike any Angels/Demon series I've ever read or even heard about. This isn't your light, breezy beach read. It's intense; with great battle scenes, tangible scenery and the best of snarky comments.
This was an extraordinarily well written book and even better ending to the series. I never expected the ending to be what it was but overall I was more than thrilled to have read Battle. The author is very clever in her writing and sense of humor regarding her characters.
