Meanwhile, Arica and Nycole are in their mid-twenties and have committed to leading celibate lifestyles. But both will face the temptation to compromise after meeting men through the means of online dating.

The author did an amazing job with this story. You were able to connect with the characters and some of their experiences. It was well written and kept you wanting more. I started reading fast and then slowed my pace because I didn’t want the story to end. Great job Sherron! I look forward to reading more books by this author.

I really enjoyed taking the journey with London, Saunya, Sheridan, Arica and Nycole. There were so many times I wanted to shake some sense into Nycole. Whew! But these are the kind of great stories that Sherron Elise weaves together that puts you as the reader right there in the midst of everything and you become so vested in the characters and seeing how or if they’ll make it to the other side. No spoilers, but let’s just say things take a little turn with the women when they try and speed up the plan God has for them. This is a good cautionary tale especially for women of any age. Excess Baggage is a must read to have on your TBR list.

Whewww Chile!!!! This book is a lot!
I’m trying not to judge these women , but Nycole is the worst!! CPS need to be all over her trifling behind. I’m Judging You Nycole! I’m judging you! I can’t even write a review without giving away any spoilers, this was a lot. It’s a shame that we as women will do the most when we hear a ticking clock or just don’t want to be alone. They were all in glass houses throwing stones, that’s what bugged me all the way out. It’s like do you not smell your own shit. But that damn Nycole, smh.

You have five friends all struggling in the relationship department.

Saunya who is a 36 year old assistant Principle is extremely judgmental “woman of God” She finds herself in a relationship with her pastors son and every red flag has appeared in this union but she is so desperate for a husband that she has been able to overlook his controlling nature, His lack of boundaries with his father, and his infidelity with a member of the church. Saunya has a high moral ground but she lacked grace for her friends. I highly dislike women who will deal with a man but toss their friends aside after a few mistakes. Where is the grace?

London who is also 36 finds herself hopeful that she will become a wife. Only that can’t happen because her boyfriend is married. After 1 ½ years in a relationship with Ashton, London hoping to get a proposal gets dumped because Ashton wants to work it out with his wife and two children. Sick of dealing with black men and their drama, she turns to online dating only to connect with a white Real Estate tycoon. Who showers her with attention, gifts, and emotional intelligence. London is a teacher who starts the school year thrilled at the prospect of her new relationship. She is tasked with putting the career day event together and reaching out to a business man who is set to speak at the event. She learns that said business man is a married real estate mogul who happens to be her boyfriend. London is more than over the dating scene and is caught off guard when her church hires a new music director Taylor who is smart, handsome, and widowed. He has three children and has taken a liking to London.

Sheridan is almost 40 and can’t believe that she is still single and childless. Tired of waiting on God’s timing, she takes matters into her own hands and ask her brother’s best friend Ivan if he would like to have a baby with her. Ivan agrees because he wants to become a father. But he doesn’t want to be bothered with attending doctor’s appointments and being there for Sheridan in any aspect. She finally gets tired of their situationship and asks him to be committed to one another and he lets her know he has gotten back with his ex and plans to propose to his ex. Now Sheridan finds herself a single mother.

Nycole is a single mother of two children who wants to live her best life. If the streets are calling then she goes running. She is Sheridan’s little sister and always leaves the children with their mother. Nycole is tired of not being taken seriously by men because of her two children so she decides that the next guy she dated would never know of them. She starts dating Anthony a wealthy investment banker who showers her with love, gifts, and time. Nycole is so smitten with Anthony that she can’t think of telling him the truth since he told her he never wanted or liked children. Desperate to sustain her relationship Nycole leaves her 11 and 8 year old daughter alone to spend a night with Anthony. The next morning she wakes up to find her apartment on the news for a fire that almost killed her son. Her daughter had lit a candle and her bath towel caught on fire. Nycole’s son almost died but both kids were rescued by neighbors.

Arica is 26 who became pregnant her senior year of high school. After her child’s father has a career ending knee injury, His dreams of becoming a basketball player are over. Arica is a beautician and had an amazing relationship with her 7 year old daughter. She has done very well for herself except finding a partner who will love her and accept her daughter. She tries online dating and meets the man of her dreams. Myles is caring, attentive, funny, man of God who respects her and cares for her daughter. Within a few weeks of dating Arica loves the fact that Myles has asked to spend more time with her daughter Lala so that they can build a bond and become a true family. So Myles starts picking Lala up from school and watching her as Arica is at work. She cannot get over how close her daughter and boyfriend have become. One day Arica gets a call from the school and learns that Lala told a friend that Myles has been molesting her from the very first time he’s picked her up from school. Arica is shattered that Myles would do such a horrible thing to her daughter. Arica feels that she has failed her daughter and isn’t able to forgive herself for allowing Myles into their lives.

This book was funny, annoying, and frustrating. You have 4 women who all want love. No matter what path they take- dating outside of their race, Online dating, Christian dating, dating marry men, lying and scheming.

They all struggled to find what they wanted most: Love.

I think that although the desire for a companion is normal it is ok to be alone. I didn’t like how each woman made such an idol about being in a relationship. We never see men go by some imaginary clock or timetable on where they want to settle down. They simply live their lives.

It was hard to read how the woman would just settle for any parts of a man simply to brag that they had one. Every single one of these woman lacked the same quality: self-love.
