The British Are Coming #2

To Marry an English Lord

Rate this book
Sebastian Whitcombe, Viscount Willowthorpe, comes to America to experience the great Wild West for himself before it disappears for good. The adventure comes with a convenient bonus—it postpones his father’s edict that he take a wife from the British aristocracy. Sebastian isn’t so much against marriage as he is an arranged marriage to the wrong woman.

Jocelyn Overstreet hasn’t returned to her family’s eastern Idaho cattle ranch in six years. She’s far too busy managing the New York City offices of Overstreet Shipping. But when her older brother has a serious run-in with a bison, she returns to the ranch only to find the Overstreet home invaded by visitors from England, one of them a disturbingly handsome viscount who disarms her defenses at every turn.

Sebastian’s future lies in England where the Earl of Hooke is determined to choose his son a wife. New York City holds Jocelyn’s future with scant time for romance, much less marriage. The attraction between her and Sebastian seems doomed to fail.

Amidst the clash of their worlds, Sebastian and Jocelyn find that the risk of love, against all odds, might just be a risk worth taking.

To Marry an English Lord is the second of the series, The British Are Coming. We met Sebastian Whitcombe, Viscount Willowthorpe, in To Enchant a Lady's Heart. Now, he, his sister, and an artist friend are in the wilds of Idaho spending a year with William Overstreet, an American friend he went to Eton with as a boy, and to enjoy the American West along with the dangers and beauty of the land. William's sister, Jocelyn, is there from New York City to help William through an injury. This story is one where two people from opposite backgrounds come together and find an unexpected attraction and interest. It is a lovely story of healing and understanding with faith through differences and love. The characters are wonderful, and the setting is lovely. I recommend for those who enjoy historical romance with a faith thread.
I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review from the author. These are my thoughts.

While I never add a rating to one of my own books on Goodreads, I must give 5🌟 to the narrator of the audiobook of To Marry an English Lord. While it has been a while since I last read the book as part of the editing process, I certainly know the story. But somehow, Anne Marie's narration took me out of myself and allowed me to enjoy the story as if I were hearing it for the first time. If you like audiobooks, I hope you'll get to enjoy this one.

1895 Idaho

Sweet romance between a member of the English nobility and an independent American woman. I'm glad there are more books to come in the series.

Sebastian Whitcombe has always wanted to visit the American West. His father insists it is time for him to marry and begin preparations to become the next earl. As a compromise, Sebastian has agreed to do so after spending a year in Idaho at his friend William's ranch.

Jocelyn Overstreet runs the family shipping business in New York City. After receiving a telegram from her brother William's housekeeper saying he has been in an accident and she needs to come quickly, Jocelyn returns to the ranch for the first time in six years.

To Marry An English Lord is the second book in The British Are Coming series by Robin Lee Hatcher. I liked Sebastian and Jocelyn. Having Sebastian write letters to Adam was a clever way to include him in the story (from the novella). I'm ready to read about Amanda next.

I received a free Kindle copy of this book. I volunteered to read it and write a review.

A love worth the risk!

Sebastian embarks on a final journey to America before resigning himself to his fate - becoming as earl. Jocelyn lives the life of an independent woman as manager of her father’s shipping company. When they chance to meet at her brother’s ranch, things change for them both forever.

Sebastian and Jocelyn are so different, from two different countries and two different classes. But they discover that acceptance and respect can build a good foundation for a relationship, even when others don’t approve or their own doubts try to overwhelm.

I enjoyed their story, a good addition to the series. Eagerly awaiting the next installment. I received a complimentary copy and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

Robin Lee Hatcher has captured my reading heart for years so I was super excited to be on her advanced reading team for this book. This is the 2nd book in The British are Coming series. Quickly before my book arrived, I read book one. I truly enjoyed learning about the Whitcombe family in England and soon fell in love with the three Whitcombe siblings. They are delightful.

This book takes place shortly after the 1st book ends. Only the setting is in America and not in England. Which is a fun twist for the series.

Sebastian Whitcombe is FINALLY in America visiting a school friend’s ranch. He and his sister Amanda are going to discover America for a year before he has to settle down, marry, and produce an heir. While they are staying at the American ranch he meets his college friend’s sister, Jocelyn. Sebastian takes his role and responsibilities of being the future Lord of their family home: Hooke Manor very seriously—Yet, he finds himself falling for an American.

This delightful book had me cheering on Sebastian and Jocelyn as they went on their adventures on the Wild West. Their adventures have ups and downs and a few surprises.
This book was an easy read, and perfect for when you just want to unwind with a plot that will draw you in and make you stay for hours.

What a great book! Robin Lee Hatcher did it again :) Her books always manage to pull me in and this one was no exception. I love the way she describes locations/settings and I fell in love with the characters. Hard to say who was my favorite. It was fun to read about an English Lord on a ranch in the American West. Lives were colliding for sure! It was so much fun to learn about what life on a ranch at the time was like and to follow Sebastian along as he grew and had to make decisions that would change and affect a lot. A very sweet, lighthearted story that made me laugh at times, touched my heart at times and was hard to put down.

Christian historical set in 1895 Idaho. The characters were interesting but some of the side plots were not resolved. Perhaps because this will be handled in further books in the series? Otherwise a good quick read.

I've been looking forward to reading Sebastian's story ever since I finished Eliza and Adam's, and it definitely did not disappoint. Taking place shortly after the events of the first book, To Marry an English Lord is a heartwarming, faith based romance that showcases author Robin Lee Hatcher's tremendous talent for crafting historical fiction.

While the first book had England as its setting, this one takes readers to the American West, where Sebastian and his sister Amanda are finally achieving their dream of seeing this beautiful region. Taking his friend Will up on the offer of being his houseguest on his ranch for a year, Sebastian is looking forward to one more year to live his life the way he wants, before his father insists on him marrying and producing heirs. What he never expected though is William's sister Jocelyn who is different from any woman he's ever met before. It's definitely not love at first sight when Jocelyn first discovers that her brother has invited his old school chum to be his houseguest. Instead she's outraged by the idea of British aristocracy putting her family out of their space, but soon learns there is much more to the story, and much more to Sebastian. As feelings start to emerge, both struggle with the idea of blossoming a romance when it seems there's so much to overcome to do so.

With realistic struggles, authentic insecurities, and a plot that left me wanting to read long past my bedtime, To Marry an English Lord was a delightful read, and a wonderful story to curl up with during the cold winter days. Robin's storytelling was top notch as always, the romance was sweet and slow burn which was a pleasant surprise, and the faith element played out front and center as Jocelyn and Sebastian learn to trust Him with all their doubts and insecurities.

Final Rating: 4/5.

A wonderful follow up To Enchant a Lady's Heart, and I'm already excited to read Amanda's story when it releases.

I definitely recommend this one to anyone who enjoys heartwarming, faith based romances and/or historical fiction.

Thanks so much to Robin Lee Hatcher for allowing me to read and review this title!

I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary advance reader copy of this novel from the author as part of her review team. I was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and this is my honest review.

Enchanting series with memorable characters! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am captivated by the characters in this story and by the western setting of Eden’s Gate Ranch in Robin Lee Hatcher’s series, The British Are Coming. In 1895, English viscount Sebastian Whitcombe travels to an Idaho ranch owned by a college friend, seeking to settle his mind about his father’s demand that he marry well and produce an heir to carry on the Earl of Hooke lineage. On the ranch, he meets his friend’s sister, Jocelyn Overstreet, an independent woman who runs the family’s shipping empire in New York City. After a bit of a rocky start, an attraction develops between the two.

This couple grabbed my heart as they strive to live up to the expectations of their positions. Family and faith are important to them. I appreciated the struggles they faced as members of loving and responsible families. Author Robin Lee Hatcher delivers an enchanting romance.

After finishing this book, I immediately wanted to binge read the whole series, staring with the prequel novella, To Enchant a Lady’s Heart, featuring other members of the family. The next next installment of the family saga, To Capture a Mountain Man, is set in one of my favorite places, the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park, so I know it will be a fascinating adventure. As you can tell, I highly recommend this series by Robin Lee Hatcher, a gifted Christian author.

Favorite quote: “If you have asked God a question and diligently seek His answer, I promise He will speak to you. What I cannot promise is that the answer will come quickly. Sometimes we must wait and trust. Waiting can be difficult. But the answer will come,”

I couldn't wait to dive into this story! I've been waiting for this book ever since I read the prequel, To Enchant a Lady's Heart. Sebastian, although English royalty, is fascinated with the American West. His father allows him to take one year in Idaho to visit an old school chum and then he must return to England and marry and produce an heir. Sebastian plans to take full advantage of that year! He is captivated by the American West from the moment he steps foot on William Overstreet's ranch. However, when William's sister, Jocelyn, greets him instead of William (who is gravely injured due to a bison attack), things become very chilly! Jocelyn doesn't know Sebastian and his sister, Amanda & a male friend are coming to the ranch! She's not happy! Jocelyn lives in New York City overseeing the family's shipping company. I loved her feistiness! I couldn't picture her in NYC because she loved the ranch and all things horses! But, she was also very good with the business. Sebastian was very taken with Jocelyn from the beginning. Would she ever consider returning to England with him? There were real obstacles to overcome for both of them and when a surprise visitor shows up, what will happen? I thoroughly enjoyed Amanda's character! Can't wait to read her story! A wonderful story overall and such fun to read about the American West!

Robin Lee Hatcher never disappoints! To Marry An English Lord is another great read. I enjoyed the story of English aristocracy coming to visit a ranch in the “wild west.” Hatcher gives an enjoyable look at what happens when two different cultures come together. The story contains interesting and engaging characters.

It’s fun when Viscount Willowthorpe (Lord Sebastian), his friend, and his sister visit William on his ranch near Yellowstone Park. They encounter unexpected news when they arrive and are not welcomed with open arms. Despite this, they are soon in love with the surrounding beauty and life on a ranch.

Sebastian, the Viscount, is intrigued by William’s sister, Jocelyn, who is a strong and capable woman. I loved the characters and the look at life in 1895 Idaho. I enjoyed the references to Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. I’ve always wished I could have seen that. I fall in love with Idaho every time I read a book by this author. I need to visit someday!

I received an advance copy for an honest review.

Does an Englishman know what to expect at a Western ranch? Sebastian finally accepted his friend's invite to visit his ranch. He was amazed by the beauty. Yes, the view was breathtaking. But he was mesmired by Jocelyn, his friend's sister.

The location is one where I have visited a few years ago. I highly recommend going if you have not been. It is stunning. I can imagine Sebastian, his sister, Mary and their friend, Roger, overwhelmed by GOD'S handiwork.

Jocelyn and Sebastian appear to be different. But they have the need to be loved in common. They struggle to show their vulnerability. How sad, if love and happiness are lost because of this. Sometimes you just need to take a chance.

This is the second book of the British are Coming Series. I look forward to reading the next one. I love outwest and Robin Lee Hatcher's books.

I loved this fish out of water story with English aristocracy in the American west. Sebastian was a swoony hero who needed a wife, and Jocelyn was an independent woman who had never worried about finding a husband. Their love story was really sweet, and I loved that they didn’t have a lot of friction with each other, though they did have some external friction from other sources. They stuck together and got through their obstacles. For a shorter novel, Robin Lee Hatcher did a great job on characterization, like the siblings of the main characters. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the setting, particularly the mountains and animals. I’m really looking forward to the next book in this series, and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an amazing historical romance!

Setting: Idaho near the beautiful Teton mountains
I really enjoyed this book and I definitley plan to read the rest of the books in "The British Are Coming"series. (The author says that each book in the series can be read as a stand alone, which I really like.) I loved the physical descriptions of the mountains etc and I enjoyed the character development. It was a bit "Hallmarky" in the sense that you knew some of the plots were predictable but the journey to get there was really enjoyable. It is a clean story with strong faith threads. I loved the cover of the book as it showed both the scenery and gave you a visual for the English Lord. I like checking out the websites of authors when I read their books and Robin Lee Hatcher has an amazing website!!

Robin Lee Hatcher does an amazing job showing what happens when earthly royalty meets heavenly royalty. She intertwines praises and petitions to God into every day events on the ranch, where Sebastian,English royalty, and Jocelyn, ranch owner with her brother, meet and fall in love. The author uses such casual inclusion of prayers that they do not interrupt the flow but add a sense of God's presence in the life of these characters. This gives a richness to their love story and challenges they face. Although this book is the second in the series, The British are Coming, it is a stand-alone and allows enough information to complete the story without having read the 1st book in the series. As always I love Robin Lee Hatcher's work and this book does not disappoint.

I loved this inspirational story of an English Viscount, Sebastian Whitcomb, who comes to an Idaho cattle ranch to visit his former schoolmate, William Overstreet, and experience the American west. Several unusual happenings occur on the ranch while they are visiting but the viscount fits right in! William's feisty sister, Jocelyn, comes home from running a company in New York. She is unlike any English woman Sebastian has ever met! The characters in To Marry an English Lord were exceptional. Robin Lee Hatcher has written another delightful story which I recommend to others. I received a complimentary advance e-book. This is my honest opinion.

I was so excited to read book 2 of Robyn Lee Hatcher’s “The British are Coming” series and I was not disappointed!

We were introduced to Sebastian in Book #1 but in Book #2, his character really developed. Seeing the relationship between him and Joscelyn grow was sweet and endearing.

I loved how Joscelyn was a strong and independent woman. Oftentimes, books written in this time period show women to be weaker and more dainty so it was refreshing to have a strong female lead.

I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the next book in this series.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book to read and give an honest review on.

What a delightful read on a gloomy winter day! I was transported back in time to the beauty and majesty of the Grand Teton Mountains and the lush springtime meadows, creeks and hills of the old west. As always, Robin Lee Hatcher presents wonderful characters with real obstacles to overcome, and I was rooting for Jocelyn and Sebastian to the end. To Marry an English Lord kept me up way past my bedtime, and I had to finish it first thing this morning with my coffee. I can’t wait to read Amanda’s story.

Two worlds meet.

This was a charming story of two worlds meeting. An English Lord who wants to experience life in the Wild West, comes to visit his friend's ranch in Idaho. When he meets his friend's sister, an independent, confident woman who runs the family shipping business in New York, he is fascinated by her. As they get to know each other, they fall in love, but face many challenges, including the objections of Sebastian's father the Earl. Their love grows and they find their future together.

Not as good as the first book for sure. I was so excited for Sebastian's story and in this book he and his sister go to America to visit his friend from school who owns a ranch in Idaho. His friend has a sister! Things are going to get good, right? Wrong. No romantic buildup or any falling in love, one day Sebastian just decides he wants to marry Jocelyn and tells her and then they kiss. There is a grizzly bear and some cattle theives, but there is no real conflict in the story, no one grows or evolves, it was just...meh.

What a fun adventure! An English Viscount on an American cattle ranch was interesting to see. Sebastian definitely had some adventures while working on the ranch. I was glad to see him make decisions for his future and take a stand for what he wants. Jocelyn was a delight. Their friendship quickly budded into more. I enjoyed the faith elements that were perfectly woven into the story. It was fun to have Amanda and Robert along for the ride too; and Sebastian’s letters to Adam (from book one) made me smile.
I am excited to read Amanda’s story very soon.

I so enjoyed the first story of Adam and Eliza, and Sebastian being supportive and gracious. But he is wonderful and enthusiastic living in the states and helping his best friend and falls for his friend’s sister Jocelyn. Although she lives in NY, runs the family business, but she is a rancher and skilled horsewoman. This was a fun follow-up. I can’t wait yo read the story of Amanda and their other friend Roger.

This is such a fun Christian historical romance! I love that author Robin Lee Hatcher turns the tables on the American heiress goes to London to buy a British title trope. In this story, a wealthy aristocrat tries his hand at being an Idaho cowboy while wooing the cowgirl who runs the family's shipping business. Such a unique story line! And that viscount is swoony.

Very much enjoyed this second story in the series. It was fun to read about the ranch, and fun to visualize an English aristocrat dressed like a cowboy and doing cowboy work. Made me wonder how he could possibly go home and live the aristocratic live again. Well, another book is coming, so maybe we'll see.

Nice

I like the enjoyment of the country and the work done there. Sebastian is unusual in so many ways. Like how he wants to experience it all, and us humble enough to be taught. A lovely read of strong characters in challenging situations. I especially liked the faith aspects of it. A good read. Leaves you feeling good, but wanting more.
