Persephone (Percy to friends) is a woman who stands out in a crowd, literally. She is not the average petite woman and has to work at being feminine.
She wants to be a successful author, but at the moment that is not paying the bills. She meets a guy/gal who offers her a job, front of house in a drag club. What has she got to lose?
So begins another funny, warm and absorbing story from Amanda Egan. As soon as Percy was introduced to me, I just had a vision of Miranda Hart and it stuck right through the book. I could see Miranda Hart playing Percy in a tv adapation of this funny novel.
The guys/gals at the drag club are a fabulous and vibrant bunch of characters who take Percy under their wing and help to transform her image as well as giving her a job.
Other supporting characters include the lovely Tom, her high maintenance neighbour and Percy's parents, who have rather an unusual marriage that is about to explode.
I loved the message in this novel about being true to yourself and be who you are not what others want you to be, and then you will find happiness.

Finally back on the reviewing wagon...
I had had this book on my Kindle for sometime and in the end the title intrigued me to much to ignore it!
Percy (Persephone) has looked at her boyfriend's phone and seen a photo of a beautiful blond, and yes he's been seeing her ... so that's that then. Percy is larger than life in stature, her Mum has always told her so, her Dad has adored her forever.
She is set up by Mia (her best friend) on a date with Tom who is significantly shorter than her, they don't find love but they do find a firm friendship
One day while Percy is looking for work she meets Mick, well Annie, and he offers her a job at the Gossamer Glove. A Drag club, she thinks he wants her to perform and is put out, but soon realises that she has nothing to lose and works front of house.

I loved this book. It was reminiscent of the film The Bird Cage. I just loved all the characters and the story was so realistic to real life with everything about it believable. No fantasy in this book! It is a must read for anyone who loves a real down to earth story with lovable characters from start to finish.

Joyous feel-good gold!
This book was absolutely amazing from start to finish.
Fun, honest, down to earth but set amongst a different cast of characters.
A positive, often forgotten, message which all people should remember, delivered in a heart warming, happy tale.
I completely loved every second of reading this novel, now all I want to do is find my own drag family to become a part of!
Amanda Egan is a warm and witty authoress, this is by far her crowning glory.

A witty and warm-hearted read with lots of likeable, colourful and zany characters—a page-turner with never a dull moment. I loved it.

I really had no idea what to expect from this book. It was my first from this author. Once I started reading, I didn’t want to put it down.

Persephone not only has to deal with the ridiculous name her mother gave her, but also her unusual height. At 6’2” she’s big boned, has large feet and hands and doesn’t consider herself feminine at all but more suited as a builder!
Lacking any sort of self-esteem, she struggles with her life, one disappointment after another, compounded by her over bearing mother’s critisisms and put downs, until she finds herself in an unusual job that she knows her mother will hate!
Life takes on a whole different perspective working with larger than life personalities in a drag queen bar, and laughs more than any time in her life; she also discovers she isn’t the failure her mother has always told her she is.
Ms Egan is a very gifted writer and doesn’t disappoint in this novel. Her writing is always full of humour as well as touching on some sensitive emotions we can all relate to, along with a strong story line.
This is a heart-warming, funny, relatable yarn that I found extremely addictive and couldn’t put down until I’d finished. I would highly recommend this book, I feel sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. Brilliant.

Good read
While the subjects are on the far side of where I inhabit this world, it was interesting and brought a few uncles along the way. The spirit of the book was nice.

Enjoyed Stilettos & Stubble
Really enjoyed reading Stilettos & Stubble. Had a hard time at first with the London slang and terms. Loved all the characters and the story.

This is a hilarious book and can't be put down from the word go.
