High Risks by Adrian “Ox” Mendez is a tale of deceit, murder, mayhem, and a few other elements. Risks are definitely taken, but to what cost? What risks are you willing to die for? Do you have the heart or balls to take high risks?

High Risks opens up with a scene that is not for the faint of heart. Mendez opens up with a torture scene that may be a bit too much to stomach, or even read through. This beginning is where we meet Blacka, Reef, Dummy, Dwight, and Malachi. The men are gathered around a torture session that I grimaced while reading. It's a gory session that even the most fanatical gory reader may back up. We are introduced to Blacka and his Jamaican henchmen without souls.

Blacka is, in my opinion, your typical drug dealer, with a God complex. He does not get his hands dirty and hires people to resolve his not so friendly issues. With the introduction of Blacka, comes Dwight and Malachi, who are not built the same as their boss. These two have aspirations, but not the character or the mindsets to become what they aspire. Blacka on the other hand is what he represents. Reef and Dummy are killers to the highest degree, which you hope and pray are never sent your way. These two are deadly sinister and are not any way, shape, or form someone you want to cross.

Deals are made and broken. Lives are lost. Backbone are grown in the last hours. Drastic measures are taken. The measure of a man is his word. High Risks shows us the measure of several men and their actions.

This tale was given three stars because it was hard to follow at first. The Jamaican patois also made it realistic but hard to read sometimes. There were also some editorial mistakes such word usage that detract from the tale.
