Beginnings

"I've always been fascinated by elements of nature at the moment of transformation. Babies are the human face of beginnings, but all of nature is caught in this insistent stream of seasons, of aging and rebirth, of concealment and breaking forth. Every time I unwrap a newborn, even after all these years of photographing them, I am aware of the miracle before me." Anne Geddes' Beginnings records the everyday miracles of nature. Life-breathing images. Editor's recommendation.

I am not saying that Anne Geddes is a bad photographer.

I got this book to study the work of a good photographer, unfortunately this book does not showcase her best work. The subject of pregnant bellies and newborns can produce some amazing pictures. I just don't think the ones in this book are that captivating on the whole. There are some spectacular shots here, but they are not the majority.

As far as studying her technique, her lighting is fantastic. Her ability to take pictures of sleeping babes is spot on, after twenty or forty pages it does get repetitive. There are several times throughout the book where the same subject is shown from almost the same angle/same shot. More variation would have made this collection a better showcase for her work.
