Pete Kelly is preparing to leave everything he loves behind and move cross-country when he makes a fateful wish. Transported by one Christmas miracle, he looks desperately for another to find his way home. Christmas Town is a 9,000 word short story that examines the redemptive powers of Christmas.
I read this short story over the course of two evenings, but you really could do it in one.
Peter is a stressed-out lawyer on his way to a new corporate job in Boston. When he stops to look at a Christmas village display in Sea-Tac, he wonders what it would be like to live there ... and after a black-out, that's just where he wakes up.
Nothing in town is quite as idyllic as he imagined, but he still learns some important lessons about himself along the way.
An entertaining tale created by a gifted author. Highly recommended.
I don't remember where or how I found out about this quick Christmas fantasy read, but I'm glad I did.
Even with the fantastical aspects to this, it has quite a down-to-earth vibe. And the story isn't simplistic or sugary-sweet. It's got a bit of a bite to it. And an ominous side.
Yet, the story makes room for emotion, and it's touching, especially in the way it wraps up. Well worth the read, for fellow fans of short holiday stories.
Note: • some language, but kept to a "PG" level • no graphic violence • no explicit sexual content
Probably 3.5 stars, rounded up for good measure. Shawn Inmon is a favorite author of mine. Clocking in at 27 pages, there was barely any time for characterization. Nicely written, and simple message. I read a variant of this storyline in longer form once and, well…it was weird, so perhaps short and sweet was the way to go!
A lovely quick read to get you into the festive spirit! I enjoyed it, I wish it was longer and gave a bit more backstory to all the characters but truly a good read!
Definitely a different short story of a man who miraculously finds himself within a Christmas town's display and seeks ways to return home. Sweet and clean good bedtime story.
Christmas Town This is the story of Pete and he's somehow managed to become divorced and the kids he has just put back on the plane for them to go home. He see the town and how magical it all appears and wishes he was there. Before he knows it he is there and when he is summoned by the mayor to come help her. She knows he will be out of sorts... He is trapped in a time warp of sorts as everybody has been there for over 60 years and they have not aged. He is given a lawyer's office as that is his profession and others tell him there is no way to go back. Other works by the author are highlighted at the end-which sound real interesting.
Pete finds himself transported into a Christmas village and must now found out a way to get back into the “real” world. While this concept is a bit far-fetched I liked it. I enjoyed the magical Christmas feel of it. Plus it also has an important message which is to realize what the most important things in life are. Sometimes we get so involved in everyday life or our jobs that we don’t take the time to live in the moment. This is a very imaginable tale, one that will make you remember what we truly should be thankful for.
What if you wished for a life in a forever Christmas place? What would it be like, never to see your children or family and friends? This is what Pete found!
This was a very cute short that gave me pause....never wish for anything unless you know you really, really want it! Very good story, well developed, good descriptions and details.
