Rules of Play is a forced proximity, dislike-to-lovers coming out story between soccer players Alex and Ian. The setup for this book was genius: 2 rival teammates are stuck together in a hotel room for 2 weeks. After the two boys make a no fapping bet, sexual tensions and hormones rise. Will they spend two weeks in celibacy, or help each other out?

A couple of peak athletes, used to hours of daily exercise, finding themselves trapped together in a small room with no other physical outlet than each other's bodies...

I love forced proximity books, especially the there's only one bed trope. There were a lot of incredibly sweet moments between Alex and Ian as they get to know each other better. Alex has experienced a lot in his life and Ian is the perfect partner to support him in expressing his true self. It appears as though this is the first book for these characters, and their story will continue in another book.

While I really liked the book, I found the pacing to be a little slow, particularly in the final third of the book. We occasionally see events from both characters' POVs which was really cute but slowed down the momentum of the story. The part of the book I enjoyed the most was in the hotel room. Overall however I found it to be worth a read. If you aren't really a fan of sports books, this book may work well for you as sports is not a main plot point.

So many good tropes in this book! This was such a great slowburn, forced proximity, college sports romance. I loved the pacing of this story starting off with slowburn, going high heat, then moving back to a slowburn while they got to know each other outside of their quarantine. The bonus scenes of text exchanges (and the text exchanges throughout) were such a good comedic relief to some heavy topics that both Ian and Alex discuss throughout this story. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this series

I found so much to love in this book; I already adore Alex from Go the Long Way (although this book doesn't segue gently so much as time warp into another dimension. ::Full body shake and readjust:: Okay, now. Ready). I enjoyed the sparks between Alex and Ian, and Alex's friend Vin is a work of art. Besides a good story in general, C.J. Pines crafts a mean and blistering hot sex scene - and I am not generally a fan of these, and particularly dislike the three-letter spelling of come. And yet, except for a couple of spots, I stayed glued to the page. Overall, I was charmed by all the bits and pieces that make up this tale, and the short-chapter format was fun. The author also tips in random cultural tidbits that drive my curiosity - along with some entertaining Spanish, and of course, love and HEA. So, win!

That said, my reason for four rather than five stars: this would have been so, so much better if it were pared down by at least a quarter, maybe even a third. Even though the steamy scenes are quite outstanding as such things go, (and if that's your thing, do grab this when it comes out!), I personally could have done with fewer and shorter bouts. For me, it began to feel repetitive---and endless---after the first many rounds.

Review:
This is the second book in the Chance's Harbour series, and in this we follow Alex as he's gone to uni to pursue soccer. We also meet Ian, the team captain who has been tasked by the trainer to work alongside Alex to learn from his knowledge of the game, while also teaching Alex his people skills. Alex can't stand the apparent self-righteousness of Ian, and he is intimidated by how much he is the perfect son that Alex's father wanted from him. Also, Alex's ex-girlfriend cheated on him with Ian (despite Ian having no idea), and so this all adds up to a hatred for everything Ian. On the other hand, Ian is trying to connect with Alex, but the constant prickliness and rudeness of Alex has him frustrated and happy to leave things be. When a teammate goes down with COVID while they're on the road for away games, they're all forced to quarantine in the hotel for two weeks, and Ian and Alex find themselves as disgruntled roommates. Things do not go well, until they both accidentally discover they bat for the same team, and then things slowly bloom between them over the next 14 days.

I wouldn't call this a slow-burn, as things happen within a couple of weeks, but the story is rather slow-paced, and there is a lot of time we spend in their heads, or listening to them talk and work things out, so it does take a little while until we get to anything. But, I really enjoyed the relaxed pacing the story went at. Absolutely nothing wash rushed, or cut short, or felt like it needed to be looked at more closely. We get a really good look into Alex's mind around his insecurities and struggles, and we really get to see how they both learn about each other and grow. I enjoyed the many spicy scenes in this book, not only because they were really hot, but because there was so much open communication, and discussion about their limits and concerns and worries. We really get to authentically see how Alex comes to terms with doing some of the things he does with Ian, and the ways he is unlearning so much of the vile that his dad spewed and bashed into him over his life, and while it was painful, and I also loved seeing him freed of that pain with Ian.

There is definitely a big point of contention that arises from some miscommunication, but overall Ian really prioritises open communication, and I really enjoyed having that represented, especially in such young characters. It definitely speaks of the the kind of upbringing he had. I wouldn't say the drama/3ABU is dragged out, as it again only occurs over a number of days, but given the pace of the story, we also get to see them both coming to the realisation of how they were in the wrong, and then trying to open up and communicate again. The story finishes really at the start of their relationship, and looking at the synopsis for the next book with these two, I just know it's going to hurt even more, but it's such a good pain too. I really enjoyed the angst, and the resolution of their relationship and coming to properly understand each other. This was a really well written, beautiful story, and I'm looking forward to more in the future.

I had to sit with this one for a bit before writing my review because I couldn't quite decide how I wanted to rate it. In the end, I am giving it 3.5 stars, rounding up to 4.

This was my first book by CJ Pines and I think one of the reasons I struggled with it most is that I didn't read the book that comes before this one, Go the Long Way. I received this book as an ARC and was told that no prior reading was necessary. While I suppose that is technically true as this book features a different couple, I felt pretty lost about Alex's background and everything that had happened with his family. I think I could have appreciated Alex as a character much more if I'd read the previous book.

Overall, I enjoyed the plot and the characters in this book. The side characters were especially great and I'd be curious to read more about them. Ian was a prince the entire way through. I really liked him. He was big on communication and consent, though he failed to communicate well a couple of times. I struggled to like Alex as much. While Alex had been through a lot and his initial dislike of Ian was somewhat justified, he still came across to me as pretty immature and a bit of a brat. It was easy to forgive his flaws though because of his trauma and situation. He was especially immature with the way he handled their "breakup." I was also really surprised that their teammates took Alex's side without knowing what happened despite having known Ian longer. I really started to like Alex by the end though.

The author relies heavily on miscommunication as a plot device for the romance. The secondary plot with Alex's family, especially his father, was not mentioned in the blurb, so it caught me by surprise. The story ends with an HFN and there will be another book with Alex and Ian as the MCs.

This book was long, much longer than it needed to be. The steamy scenes were good and Alex and Ian have great chemistry. One of my biggest issues with the writing was that the dialogue was often interrupted by long, winding tangents or background information that wasn't always necessary. These could go on so long, that I'd forget what the characters were even talking about. I found myself skimming sections to get to the dialogue, which helped move the plot forward.

Overall, I liked the story for what it was, but I think I'll leave Alex and Ian here, giving them an HEA in my head. I might come back to the series if more books are written featuring the side characters in this one.

The storyline is good, but the story itself is far longer than it should have been, with large gaps that dragged on. I really enjoyed some of the secondary characters, such as Alex's best friend and some of Alex and Ian's teammates. The first half of the book was good, the second half, where the drama kicks up, really tried my patience and I found myself putting the book down frequently, which is unusual for me.

The main reason for this, is Alex. Alex is a TSTL character, to a T. He does and says really stupid things, over and over, and is so irrational that it's unrealistic. I found him unlikeable despite his cute meekness at times. His back and forth between blame, and self blame; like and dislike, meekness and meanness...it gave me whiplash. I know he has self-esteem issues and has had some trauma, but it was pretty over-the-top behavior, especially for a college-aged man.

My biggest issue with the book:

The author's lack of the use of pronouns at the beginning of sentences. Using it in conversations sometimes is fine (I do it myself sometimes), but after a while, it was glaringly obvious and excessive. For example: "Not sure her car was even out of the driveway before we were on his bed with our hands down each other's pants. Let me borrow a pair of his boxers after because I'd come in mine." It's extremely distracting, and I can't remember ever running into this in any book before.

In one paragraph alone (about 40% into the book) it was done seven times. "Didn't hurt a bit", "Liked the weight of him" "Finished me off","Love feeling them", "Wasn't like that for me", "Doesn't mean I won't" "Just doesn't do it". Instead of " It didn't hurt a bit" or "I liked the weight of him" etc.

It's a good story and I enjoyed the first half of the book, despite the lack of pronouns that was starting to make my eye twitch. The second half...I found myself going back and forth between not wanting to read it, and wanting to race towards the end and get it over with, only to find that it just sort of...ended. There was no lead-in to the next book, and the epilogue wasn't even about them, it just mentions them in passing.

I'm really not sure if I'm going to read the next book or not. In a way, I'd like to know what happens with Alex's dad, so I'll probably take a peek when it's released and cross my fingers that Alex isn't such an ass and that more pronouns are used at the beginning of sentences 😄

This is an enemies to lovers, geek/jock sports romance with Alex, the student from book one’s, Go The Long Way, who was in need of protection from his abusive father. In college now, he’s still struggling, not only with the aftermath of the trouble with his dad but also stress with his studies as well as a hopeful future with the school’s soccer team, something he’d been working towards for years. It’s too bad that the two biggest obstacles to realizing said future is his attitude and the competition, namely Ian, the hot jock he’s being forced to room with in a hotel for two weeks due to COVID exposure from another teammate.

Both guys were really sweet, each with their own insecurities, though you never could have convinced the other of that until they each realized they were trying to protect themselves against the very same secret they were accusing the other of using to discriminate against them with.

Clear as mud? Just know that this is SUCH a good book, extremely sexy and, if two college aged guys could be considered romantic toward each other (especially Alex’s occasional sweet talk), it was pretty dang romantic too.

A lot of the time, in my experience anyway, book one of a series is usually the best and any subsequent ones that come along aren’t quite as good but this one was every bit as wonderful as book one and I LOVED it! I noticed at the end of the book there was a preview of book three coming out called Relationship Goals that continues with Alex and Ian and I already can’t wait for it to be released; I expect it to be just like the two previous ones—not a dud among ‘em!

This book is the 2nd int the Chance Harbor Series: Rules of Play. I will give a fair warning this book does end in a cliff hanger, and I cannot blame the author it was getting rather long. I’m looking forward to book 3 it will touch more on Ian and Alex’s relationship, and how Alex will have to deal with the mess his father left behind.

Rules of Play focuses on Alex, and his budding relationship with Ian, team Captain. It starts with them being rivals thinking one is better than the other. Alex is working with the Senior class team while the Co-Captain sick. The Soccer team is out of town practicing with a professional team. Hoping to improve their plays and strategies for the upcoming season. It is brought up shortly after arriving at the Hotel that the Co-Captain has Covid. The team is now stuck at the hotel for a two weeks in quarantine. Somehow Alex and Ian end up in the same room together. The sexual tension between the pair keeps climbing and climbing until something gives. It turns into a long and bumpy road of miscommunication and misunderstandings. The characters eventually work of their problems to end up with their happily ever after.

CJ Pines does a wonderful job of creating situations that needed to have understanding between both Alex and Ian. Throughout the book both characters make it known that communication is key in order to make their relationship worked. I’m a little disappointed that the author did not touch Alex and his father’s situation more. However, that will be continues on in the next book.

Bring on the angst! But also the heat!
This rival to lovers story definitely had a slow build but once you got in the room of their hotel, the relationship builds at pace.

Alex and Ian both have their own personal issues, Alex's a bit heavier but the connection and safe space the two boys build in their room was precious. And those few days of them being close proximity and getting to know each other bodies and all, was nice to read.

Sometimes I felt their internal monologues or flashbacks took me out of scenes as it took awhile to get back to the original point at hand that had triggered the initial flashback/memory tangent, so I found myself wanting to skip huge paragraphs of text to just get back to the room or scene. I understood that backstory or building context is needed but sometimes it felt unnecessary. Which is a shame because I really did enjoy how the author writes, and builds the chemistry between the two boys.

Overall, I did enjoy the whole close proximity relationship building during their covid hotel stay and their entire getting to know each other stage and stressing the importance of communication and being patience with one another.

I probably won't be reading the next book but I'm happy to have given this one a try.

I really loved the first book in this series, so I was happy to pick up Alex’s story. I like the characters and this was a fun set up for a forced proximity romance, as teammates, Alex and Ian have good tension to their rivalry. My favorite bits of this were the quiet times during their quarantine, opening up to each other in the safety of their hotel room, and really just growing close. I agree that it is quite long, which unfortunately for me made the story drag a bit, despite rooting so hard for Alex and Ian. The author really captured the insecurities of youth and how challenging it can be to figure yourself out, it feels authentic and relatable- and overall is wonderfully written. The plot from the first book continues and I really hope Alex gets a satisfying ending to his issues with his father, I am definitely looking forward to seeing how that turns out.

I chose not to DNF this book because I wanted to see how Alex's story ends. Sadly, it didn't 'end', per se, and left me unmoved and disappointed. I understand that Alex is barely a legal adult--which as it turns out is a big part of my struggle with this book--and Ian, the captain of their soccer team hardly much more, but their romance did not resonate with me at all. Alex was unlikable in the beginning until he shared the reason for his 'hatred' of Ian. It was over the top to me, given that he didn't care for the girl anyway, and recognized that she was as responsible for what happened as Ian was. And even though I understand WHY he's so uptight and insecure, the giant chip on his shoulder makes him even more immature. He's not in HS anymore, he's found a family with people who love him and give him grace to find himself and be who he is without judgment, and he's still a jerk. He spoiled the story for me.

I have to admit, I like the enemies or rivals to lovers trope. In this case, Alex and Ian are rival soccer players that find themselves stuck in the same room for two weeks because of a need for the team to be quarantined. Each has an impression of the other that comes through his own lens and not because they have bothered to get to know one another. Add to that a healthy dose of sexual attraction and these two have quite a few things to work through on their way to their HEA. The author does a nice job of layering information that helps us get to know each of the characters and some of the issues that drive each of the characters which makes their journey to one another interesting. This was a little lengthier than it needed to be but still a good read.

Alex and Ian are on the same soccer team and forced through quarantine to share a room for two weeks. What starts as an itch to scratch becomes so much more. This is a long book with page after page of angst and emotions brought on by trauma, immaturity and fear. It is also filled with sensual steam as only two young guys can experience to the limit. The two were meant for each other and I really did love Ian. I received a copy of this book through Gay Romance Reviews and this is my voluntary opinion.

The university soccer team Alex is on has an out of town game, but everything changes real fast. Instead of one night in a hotel they are quarantined for two weeks. Alex ends up sharing a room with Ian the team captain. These two are like oil and water. Alex also has his dad’s criminal trial coming up, his mothers nursing home bills and college expenses. He is stressed to the max already. This is book two of Chance Harbor series, after Go The Long Way and definitely does not disappoint, very steamy, angsty, sweet and full of drama. Can’t wait for the next book.

This was a very different book from the first in this series. And a lot longer.
Alex is now in college, struggling to cover the cost of his education and being able to survive.
Ian is in his last year and as team captain the other players look up to him.
When one of the players comes down with covid and the whole team is quarantined in the hotel for two weeks.
Ian and Alex are paired up but there is only one bed. It doesn't take long to find they have a lot in common and they find some very interesting ways to pass the time.

While the premise of forced proximity harbors a thousand possibilities (it was why I read the blurb and immediately signed up to read this book), but the follow through dragged on a bit without a satisfying conclusion to some of the plot points left open. Alex and Ian share a room and is quarantined together for two weeks and while they work through their own issues and miscommunications, I enjoyed the parts where they show their attraction for one another, but Alex's attitude was a little trying some times.

Rules of Play is and enemies to lovers takes center stage in this geek/jock sports romance featuring Alex and Ian. Alex, a college student with a troubled past, including abuse from his father, finds himself struggling with his studies and soccer dreams. Forced to room with Ian, a hot jock and his competition, due to COVID exposure, they build a precious connection and safe space in their shared room. As they spend time together, they navigate personal issues, forming a bond that transcends their initial animosity. The book is romantic, steamy, and I enjoyed it from start to finish.

This is the second book in the Chances Harbor series. It features Alex and Ian who we met in Book One - Go the Long Way. It's over-long and arduous, but all in all, the storyline is awesome. The characters are well-developed and likeable. The imagery is stunningly painted. Interestingly, the epilogue is only about Jakob and Ethan. I guess the loose ends will be tied up in Book Three as it once again features Alex and Ian. I just hope it won't be as belabored as this book.

I really enjoyed the time the author spent letting us see Alex and Ian getting to know each other during the two weeks they are in quarantine. The coach had paired them up so they could each learn something from the other but what the learn is certainly not what coach expected. Alex has definite preconceptions about Ian for good reason, and seeing him realize how wrong he is made for a great story. There is plenty of spice in this one, but it was the character growth that kept me captured all the way through.

I was expecting a cute forced proximity jock romance. Ian and Alex are teammates who have been butting heads, They are quarantined together after a COVID exposure and are forced to confront their issues and clear up the misconceptions they have been carrying. This soon turns to attraction. Both men are dealing with serious issues and learn how to communicate and rely on each other. And don't get me wrong, the sex and chemistry are HOT but I loved that both men have a good start on growth by the end of the story.

I loved the first book in this series by CJ, so I jumped right on this one! There is just something hot and sensual about the way they write the intimate scenes! Here we even get some actual first times for Alex and Ian. This story is on the longer side as you get to experience some of the more important interactions and events from both of their POV's. I rather enjoyed that. These two were pretty much forced to give each other a chance and it worked out so well!

I adored Alex in the first book and was looking forward to getting his story buuuuuuut this one really lacked for me. It was so long and drawn out that I noticed that I would lost interest from time to time due to the gaps and the slowness of everything.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Alex and Ian. The tension and then the exploration of their feelings.

Ian and Alex were a sweet pair! Although I found the flow of the story a bit difficult to get into, many scenes were repeated from both perspectives which I think could have been skipped because the other character’s perspective was easier to assume once you got into the 2nd half of the book. I enjoyed the enemies-to-lovers aspects and the COVID-19 throwback had me wishing I could have been cooped up with my man at the time.

Hurt comfort.
Miscommunication.
Sweet watching Alex and Ian learning to accept each others faults and their own, and learning how to be in a relationship together.
At times, a little long - pacing could be confusing. But loved the plot and the acceptance found at the end of the story.

This story was a MM college, sports romance with themes including forced proximity and enemies to lovers. I had a hard time maintaining my focus in this story. I felt like some detail could have been removed to shorten the story and keep it more entertaining, however, I did enjoy the MCs and their romance. Overall, a sweet story.

Enjoyable read with sweet and steamy moments. I adored this storyline, forced proximity & Sexual tension for days!!! I'd recommend.

Book 2 in the series and an enemies to lovers trope with a side of angst which I do love but I struggled with some parts when we read the same scene from different pov. I found this slowed down the pace of the storyline and made it drag a little.
