Reeling from betrayal, Mary refuses to let Aris get away with what he did to her. But, to get her revenge, she'll have to team up with another god.
Jaegen is Aris' foil, the light to his dark, but he is just as powerful and equally dangerous. And he seems to hate Aris as much as Mary does. Unfortuntely, Jaegen's plan to destroy Aris requires Mary make a sacrifice: returning to Aris.
While she's drawn to Aris, now in his physical body, Mary learns truths about Jaegen that leave her wondering who the greater evil truly is... Aris, or Jaegen?
In the finale of the duology, Mary is torn between two gods and a web of lies spent years in the making.
I wrote "Obsession" while I was at a crossroads in my life, moving from Germany back to the U.S. and starting law school. Despite the hecticness, I was never blocked creatively. In a way, the story wrote itself. Sometimes it felt like Aris had a mind of his own and I was possessed, putting his words and not my own on the page... What an interesting thought.
In any case, I hope you all enjoy the conclusion of this chaotic horror/love story. I diverged from my style of writing in the first book, which was more young adult friendly, experimenting in the territory of gore and horror ( See trigger warnings listed in the book before reading ). Some of you will not like this change. Others will be intrigued by it.
Hopefully, the majority of you all will enjoy. Either way, thank you very much for taking a chance on me.
This was a fantastic but bittersweet ending to the Aris duology. With Aris now free he is excelling at his role in life - chaos. He is destroying earth, causing devastation, and Mary has no choice but to try and stop him, even if that means working with a dangerous new God - Jaegen. I loved the shift in tone, it was darker, tragic and more violent, but alongside it explored Aris and Mary's emotional vulnerabilities and conflicted feelings. They have always been drawn to each other, but this book shifts up their dynamics repeatedly, and I enjoyed the passion, uncertainty and chaos. Jaegen was a fun new character, you never know his true intentions as he is shifty and demanding, and has his own schemes. This felt like a fitting conclusion for the duo, their bond has been volatile, twisted and obsessive, and it felt like they found solace in each other.
✨ "You've got two ancient beings fighting over you like you're the last snack in the cupboard"
✨ "Remove your hand, or I will sever it and present it to her as a token of my affection"
✨ "He should have known better than to interfere with you" "Why?" "Because you are mine"
✨ "Yes, Aris is a villain - black decay and horror. But some part of that is endearing, in an unhinged and dangerous way"

Firstly, thank you so much @lmeversbooks for reaching out and asking if I wanted to read/review this book! I loved the first one, and I needed to read this ASAP 😂.
I have said it before, and I'll say it again: I have a soft spot for Aris. Yes, he's a homicidal ancient God, created to cause chaos and is hell-bent on killing every human on Earth, but we all have our bad days 😂. I love how he is with Mary. How he is reluctant to acknowledge his feelings, even to himself. Their chemistry and banter are so good.
The pacing was just right. I was kept curious and completely engaged with the story. I wasn't bored, and not once did I wish for a different plot, etc.
I really like the world building in this duology. It feels different and new, which made me even more intrigued. I wanted to know who "The Maker" is, why they chose to create Sem, Aris, and Jaegen, etc.
Sem was a new character, and she was interesting. I can't say too much about her without spoiling the plot.
I think Mary has really developed and had some great character growth. She's still feisty, but she finally got the answers that she was searching for, and things started to click into place for her.
There was always something happening, whether it was fighting, plotting, certain characters having revelations, and even a little bit of enemies-to-friends-to-lovers thrown in.
I'm so curious about the ending and where Aris and Mary went. I'm sad that this duology has ended because I just love the characters so much!
Congratulations to @lmeversbooks on writing such brilliant books!
*Thank you to @lmeversbooks for providing this ARC. This is my own opinion and an honest review, which I am leaving voluntarily*
Another fun October read... Super atmospheric with the spooky settings. Overall thoughts: at NO point did I know where this book was going to go next. The story is incredibly original, frustrating, and shocking. I don't want to act like some literary genius savant, but most books follow a structure that's easy to predict. Sometimes, I'm surprised by a twist, but most of the time, the dude in the dark trenchcoat is the bad guy. This book is not like that at all.
I will not be rating this book..why? Because I hated it. And not in the way you’re thinking.
The author did warn me. Aris is evil. I underestimated how evil he actually is. No, because I mean it, he is a villain. He loved (but did he really?) but he was toxic. And I thought that because he loved her, she’d escape his ..evil. She did not. This is not a romance book. Something I missed. Which is a huge reason why I’m not rating this book. I misunderstood maybe? I don’t know who was wrong. Me, for misunderstanding or hoping they’d live happily together BY CHOICE. or the author, for making me somehow love Aris, believing that no matter what, he actually loves her and the he won’t hurt her. He did. He hurt her. And I forgave him the first time, but I didn’t the second time.
She perfectly portrayed a toxic relationship. I have always thought my self immune. I see people in real life or books in a toxic relationships and always think that that would never be me. Surely I can tell the difference. Surly I won’t forgive easily. I did tho. I forgave Aris for everything he did when he ***spoiler*** lost his memory. But when he came back and did what he did, I realized that I fell. I forgave.
Another reason, this book had 2 endings. I did not enjoy the first one but the second…I LOATHED IT. ****HUGE Spoiler**** you want to convince me he’d spend eternity or any amount of time torturing her? He was toxic and he was horrible but he doesn’t hurt her physically. He simply can’t. Maybe it’s his twisted love or any other reason but he doesn’t hurt physically. At least not TORTURE. It was too out of character. Too unbelievable. It ruined the whole thing for me.
I have mixed feelings about this duology since I rated the first book 5 starts and I almost did give the second one the same rating until the last 100 pages. It was simply too much for me.
This was a great end to the Aris Duology. Everything that I enjoyed in Possession was also present here. The book ends on a bittersweet note and leaves you satisfied with the story, but I am also left questioning the true motives and morals of Sem. I look forward to reading more of Lauren's work!
So, first of all, I want to say that I really loved the whole concept of the story, an evil God trapped inside this young girl's body; however, I did have some issues with how the story unfolded. 1. After some point, I just couldn't stand how naive and "innocent" Mary was. I know that the author probably wanted to show us that she was childlike bcs of her unusual situation, but yes, after a point, I wanted to shake her in hope she would wake up. Things were happening around her and she didn't seem in a hurry to ask questions, press for questions, accepted whatever she was told and sometimes even her questions weren't the correct ones. 2. After her release, you would think she would run away from Aris, but no, she makes a deal with another God whom she barely knows. She is being abused and mistreated constantly and she shows zero backbone. 3. I really liked the whole Aris is evil, I cannot change him but I am attracted to him. So, I was so disappointed when Mary literally had to erase his memories, transforming him into this boring, lovable sheep, in order for them to be together, and once he remembered we have zero romantic interaction btw them. Like there is no explosion of intense feelings, anger that would lead up to a hot make up session, and the thing is we were really expecting it. This romance was supposed from the start to be an abusive/ toxic one, which I feel it didn't live up to our expectations. 4. Also, the whole God-sibling rivalry was a bit pointless by the end of the story.
5. Mary was meant to be with him, she was created for him, she didn't change him, so they just moved to destroy another planet, yet in the end he locks her up in one of his "zoo" rooms or whatever, insinuating that their relationship will always be the same. And ???
Zero romantic interaction apart from the moments in the cabin where Aris was like a happy puppy. I think what readers expected was a scene like the one in the Castle before he touched her rune, that scene was truly amazing. I just found it a bit tiring and repetitive after a point, thus and my low rating.
Anyways, still the author wrote two books and we have to congratulate her for that!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Thank you Lauren for offering me the chance to read this pre-release ARC for my honest review! I read the first in this duology, Possession, last December, and was immediately taken in. This is a no spoiler series review.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ •Spice: 🙅🏻♀️🌶️ •Romance burn pace: best I can explain it is veeery slow. This is not a true romance series but there are romantic features. •Angst score: 3.5/5 •Tropes: horror ‘romance,’ urban fantasy, forced proximity, reluctant allies, Chosen One with a twist •HEA? Also a bit too hard to explain, but I thoroughly enjoyed the ending
Aris has kept Mary company for as long as she can remember. Her physical self is currently held captive by Mages while her mind is held captive by him. He wants her with him regardless of the cost, with him by her side and in her mind. And no matter her protestations… won’t let that come to an end anytime soon.
If enjoy TRUE villain MMCs (like seriously, not morally grey, we are talking morally black), resilient FMCs, tragic backstories, and need your plot with just a dash of romance, you’ll love this duology.
TWs copied directly from book because I think Lauren really explained them best:
This book has mentions of body horror, such as depictions of mutilation and blood. There are mentions of emotional and physical abuse. There are mentions of domestic emotional and physical abuse. There are various mentions of death and destruction, specifically human suffering and extinction. There is light cursing and derogatory language toward women and human beings. Finally, there are issues concerning suicidal ideation.
I enjoyed the first book, and I would describe Obsession as being like Possession, but more. More romance, more gore, more violence, faster paced, higher stakes, high character growth. If you liked the first book, you'll probably enjoy this one even more.
Obsession by Lauren Evers is an exceptional finale to the Aris duology, blending heart-pounding fantasy with emotional depth in a way that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Evers masterfully weaves together a narrative filled with twists, tension, and a powerful protagonist whose journey is as thrilling as it is transformative.
Mary, our fierce and determined heroine, continues to grapple with the fallout from her betrayal and her quest for revenge. Her decision to strike a bargain with the god Jaegen adds a new layer of complexity to the story. As Mary navigates the treacherous path between her heartache and her mission to save the world, the plot unfolds with a captivating mix of deceit and high-stakes action.
The growth of Mary’s character is one of the highlights of this book. Her evolution from a heartbroken victim to a formidable force is both empowering and engaging. The tension between her and the gods Aris and Jaegen creates an enthralling dynamic that drives the narrative forward.
Lauren Evers excels in creating a vivid and immersive fantasy world that pulls you in and keeps you invested. The pacing is generally strong, with well-executed dramatic moments that heighten the suspense. However, the ending might feel a bit abrupt to some, leaving a few threads unresolved as it sets up for future adventures.
Despite these minor critiques, Obsession delivers a satisfying and exhilarating conclusion to the duology. The romantic and dramatic elements are skillfully handled, and Mary’s journey adds a compelling emotional core to the story.
For fans of intense fantasy with rich character development and a gripping plot, Obsession is a must-read. Lauren Evers’ storytelling shines brightly, making this book an outstanding choice for anyone who loves a well-crafted fantasy adventure.
Welcome to the electrifying conclusion of Lauren Evers' duology! If you thought your last relationship was complicated, wait until you dive into Mary's world. Reeling from betrayal, our fierce heroine Mary is out for revenge against the duplicitous god Aris. But this isn’t a simple tale of vengeance; Mary must join forces with another god, Jaegen, Aris' foil, and just as dangerous.
Jaegen is all about that "light to his dark" vibe, and trust me, the sparks fly! But here's the twist: Jaegen's master plan requires Mary to sacrifice herself by going back to Aris. Cue the drama! Now that Aris is in his physical form, Mary finds herself dangerously attracted to him (I mean, who wouldn't be intrigued by a god?).
As secrets unravel and lies come to light, Mary is left questioning who the real villain is: the dark and brooding Aris or the seemingly righteous Jaegen. It's a rollercoaster of emotions, twists, and epic showdowns.
Lauren Evers delivers an explosive finale where the stakes are higher, the tension is palpable, and the gods are more captivating than ever. Mary's journey from puppet to powerhouse will have you cheering, gasping, and flipping those pages faster than you can say "divine intervention."
So, if you're ready to be obsessed (pun totally intended), grab your copy and get lost in this battle of gods, love, and epic betrayals. Trust me, it's a divine ride you don't want to miss! 📖✨
Obsession by Lauren Evers is a captivating read for lovers of YA Romantasy. It deals with complex moral dilemmas, morally ambiguous characters, and plot twists. This was a solid end to the ‘Aris Duology’, weaving together themes of power, deception, and the blurred lines between good and evil.
We pick up right where we left off in Possession. Mary is now on the run from a newly released Aris. In order to enact her revenge, she makes a deal with an equally dangerous and unpredictable God. The premise of this book was enticing and I found it an enjoyable read, despite not usually gravitating towards YA. I did however feel it was a little rushed. So much happened and I think it could have done with being fleshed out more.
The conclusion to Mary and Aris’ story was overall satisfying, whilst still leaving me intrigued to the world that lies ahead for them. Thank you so much to Lauren for providing me with an ARC copy. This duology has been a lot of fun to read and I can’t wait to see what you come up with in the future!
I really enjoyed this duology but definitely preferred the darker tone of this second book. I'm really appreciating books where the villain sticks to their nature with small concessions and the FMC bends more to the darkness and you definitely get aspects of that with Obsession.
You feel the frustration and tension in the dialogue between the MCs. Mary and Aris have their own goals and despite their attraction to each other they're still working towards that goal with the smallest regard of how the other feels about it.
I would consider this a Dark Romantasy book. There are some heavy themes so check trigger warnings. It's also fade to black which I typically don't enjoy but even if you're a smut head like me I would still urge you to read this duology.
I get a little bit of Liv Zander vibes, who is one of my favourite authors so I'm really excited for what Evers does next! She's expressed ideas about another god in the same world which I completely support.
Some spoiler-free thoughts for anyone wondering if they should continue the duology after Possession:
-I think that it's definitely worth continuing. Basically everything that you wanted to get in the first book and didn't get, you see in this one (answers about aris and mary, romance, revenge, etc.)
-It flies by really fast and I was pretty disappointed when it ended. I did want more and felt that it ended too quickly.
-This is a romance book and it also isn't. Don't go into it expecting smut - it isn't that.
-It isn't exactly a spoiler, but the book has two separate endings, and it allows the reader to "choose" which you think happened. One of them had my mouth hanging open for a solid minute after I finished...
Overall, check it out! Glad I stuck around and read this one. I'll miss the series and I'll probably have to buy the book to annotate just because there were so many moments where I was laughing or shook.
Thank you Lauren for the arc Was so excited to continue and see how this duology ended. And it did not disappoint. What a ride. And if you seen my review for book 1, Possession. You seen I was a bit annoyed with the fmc, Mary. Well yall, she redeemed herself in this one for me and I loved her. The intensity of this one picks up and the twists mixed in was so good. I couldn't put this down. And of course Aris, ahhhhh I missed him and loved his character even more... Not sure what that says about me seeing as who he is, God of chaos. Haha but that doesn't matter. I just couldn't get enough of his character. If only we got his pov....that would have been interesting. 😆 Nonetheless I loved this and the ending was just perfect for both Mary and Aris.
I am so honored that I was able to get an advanced copy to devour! Let me start with, WHAT A WILD RIDE!!
Mary's growth in this book was beautiful to watch, seeing her have her own wants and doing things for herself for a change. I love how Aris also grew and changed for Mary. He fought his feelings till he couldn't anymore, literally 😉
I loved the build ups and the tear downs!! The twists and turns, keeping me on the edge of my seat!
And I don't think I've ever been more satisfied with the ending of a duology. Others left me wanting, but Obsession gave me everything I needed and left me at peace with the ending.
i had been patiently waiting for this book after reading the first one as an arc back in january. this did not disappoint!
there were so many times i laughed out loud and lots of times where my heart hurt for mary. mary didn’t deserve anything that happened to her and it made me sad. 😭 but i’m happy she got her happy ending.
i loved clueless aris so much, i literally laughed out loud at a lot of his scenes. but i love regular aris so much better. 🥹 i guess i just like toxic men. 🤪
i can’t wait to get a physical copy for my trophy shelf!
Damn what a ride. I really enjoyed this epic conclusion. Lauren Evers delivers a unique story filled with so many plot twists, emotions and deception. Total page turner, couldn't put it down. If you thought Mary went through some S!HT before, buckle up buttercup because you are about to be put through the ringer. I loved her character growth. Aris is totally morally BLACK, like no lighter shade will do but it was fun to see him become barely hesitant and vulnerable in the end. I will definitely be on the lookout for more of Lauren’s books in the future.
As again i was so hooked on it (but imean based on how she ended book 1 how can it be else) 😂
I loved how the story grew and how the characters grew with it, the way mary dealt with it all and grew from her experience felt so real💖 And lets be honest mary is a badass 👀
This book has 🌪️enemies to lovers 🌪️plot twists 🌪️touch her and you die 🌪️ancient gods 🌪️slowburn
What an absolute perfect conclusion to this duology!!!
Not only was the plot packed, but we saw so much more depth to the characters and their relationships. Much like the first book, Lauren expertly creates a pace that both thrills and keeps you on the edge of your seat, the entire freaking time!!!
As happy as I am with the conclusion, I have to say… I will greatly miss Mary and Aris.
Who knew I’d be out here cheering on the God of Chaos?!
This read really had my full attention every chapter. The expression and emotion each character shows builds the plot and it had me invested. Lauren’s talent has no limits. Great book.
Spoilers for book one (Possession) but not Obsession.
I was very excited to be offered to read Obsession because I read Possession as an ARC and loved it! Obsession is the second book in the Aris Duology.
Gods, obsession (infatuation?), and magic - this book has it all. It follows Mary as she navigates her new life freed from Aris’ possession. This is all she’s wanted for so long, so why isn’t she happy?
Mary ends up back at Aris’ side, whether she likes it or not. Back together, Mary is able to see how life would be with Aris if things were different, but is it real?
Tropes/themes include unhealthy love, obsession, villain MMC, dark romance, mental health. The Aris Duology is a series unlike any others I’ve read before. It has a unique magic system with gods and goddesses and it meshes with the real world well. I love how Mary is absolutely obsessed with Aris and is self-aware of the toxicity and struggles internally with this conflict. The plot was new and unique, which kept me hooked until the end. I think Obsession is the PERFECT second and final book in this duology. I would definitely recommend this series!
I received a free ARC and am writing this review to support the author. These are my honest opinions.
Obsession is a powerful, emotionally intense finale. It leans heavily into dark fantasy, horror, and twisted romance. The book gives readers a conclusion that is both satisfying and bittersweet. It’s not a light read: there is brutality, manipulation, and psychological weight. For fans of morally black characters, godly power games, and dark, obsessive love stories — this is a very strong finish to the duology. This is a compelling, haunting conclusion that stays true to the tone of the first book, elevates the emotional stakes, and doesn’t shy away from darkness.
