Throughout history, societies have grappled with inequalities based on various factors. These social divisions often lead to groups and internal conflicts within communities. However, in the modern era of globalization, the call for equality is rising not just in workplaces but also in educational institutions, healthcare systems, and social spaces. This demand for greater fairness and inclusion is rising in the human experience across all facets of life. This shift necessitates strong leadership in organizations, coupled with a clear framework guiding the implementation of fair practices and addressing diverse scenarios. Mr. Omar L. Harris is back with another boss guide, where he talks about making work fair and cool for everyone.
The author talks about leaders being like superheroes fighting for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (J.E.D.I.). It's cool because it's not just about saying stuff; it's about doing things to make work awesome for everyone. The parallels drawn between the heroic journey of leaders and classical tales add depth to the discourse, appealing to the literary enthusiast. The nuanced discussions on purposeful cultural shaping and the distinct 'J.E.D.I. Why' serve as thought-provoking motifs, inviting readers to reflect on their leadership narratives. While the book maintains a motivational tone, as expected in self-help literature, the absence of specific case studies or real-world examples leaves room for further academic inquiry. So many theories are explained beautifully using stories and metaphors. For example, the hedgehog concept is used to explain how to gain the clarity that we need to drive our J.E.D.I. initiatives for the long term and link and embed this work into the core principles, priorities, processes, and practices of the organization.
This book does not contain any empty talk. This data-driven book equips you with critical thinking skills to analyze complex environmental issues, evaluate conflicting perspectives, and reach well-founded conclusions. It's not just about talking; it's about doing things that make a difference. Want to fight for what's right? This book will show you how.
Author Omar Harris demonstrates his uncanny ability to motivate and inspire. In this playbook, readers will be empowered to guide, lead, and enact positive change in all facets of life. Harris provides interactive assessment tools, designed to apply the skills learned throughout the playbook. This is a great way to measure your comprehension, while also serving as a motivator to implement the strategies discussed. Harris has a writing style that is easy to comprehend, yet still informative. He has a real sense of precisely which buttons to press in order to enact change. Truly a remarkable individual, as evidenced by his resume. I will surely be sharing this playbook with me Team at work!
The book draws intriguing parallels between modern leadership and the chivalrous ideals of the Knights of the Round Table. This insightful work underscores the unique responsibilities of J.E.D.I. leaders, who, much like superheroes, discover and develop their distinctive powers for the greater good. The book emphasizes the commitment to a specific code, aligning with values of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in various domains, such as employees, customers, communities, the environment, and shareholders. The narrative paints a vivid picture of the challenges and lessons that accompany the J.E.D.I. leadership role, likening it to the heroic journey in superhero movies.
One of the notable aspects of the book is the pivotal question it poses: "What's Your J.E.D.I. Why?" This inquiry underscores the significance of a clear and purposeful approach to shaping organizational culture. The book encourages leaders to move beyond traditional shareholder capitalism and embrace a mindset that focuses on improving outcomes for employees, customers, communities, and the environment.
A commendable element of the book is its distinction between being "anti" and "not." The emphasis on actively fighting against injustices rather than merely abstaining from them provides a refreshing perspective. The positive approach encourages leaders to advocate for fairness, opportunity, and progress. The inclusion of the ABCs of Optimism offers valuable insights into the mindset required for success in the pursuit of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Additionally, the discussion on conducting SWOT analyses tailored to each focus area adds a practical dimension, urging leaders to identify specific strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in their efforts.
In the closing chapters, the book draws parallels between the story of David and Goliath and contemporary leadership, offering a poignant reminder of the enduring principles of adaptive, inclusive, and intentional leadership. The analogy underscores the importance of sustained excellence and the need for leaders to earn legitimacy through unity and collective well-being.
In conclusion, "The Why of the J.E.D.I. Leader" provides a thought-provoking exploration of leadership principles. It encourages leaders to define their purpose, embrace a positive stance, and navigate their journey with strategic empathy. The incorporation of historical and modern analogies enhances the book's accessibility and relevance to a broad audience.

The book draws insightful parallels between modern leadership and chivalrous ideals, connecting J.E.D.I. leaders to superheroes on a heroic journey for the greater good. Harris's emphasis on a clear and purposeful approach to shaping organizational culture, as highlighted by the question "What's Your J.E.D.I. Why?", resonates well.

The book's closing chapters, drawing parallels between the story of David and Goliath and contemporary leadership, provide a poignant reminder of adaptive, inclusive, and intentional leadership principles. The analogy emphasizes the importance of sustained excellence and leaders earning legitimacy through unity and collective well-being.
While the book is undoubtedly motivational and offers valuable tools, it could benefit from more specific case studies or real-world examples to illustrate successful implementation. Real-world scenarios would enhance the practical application of the concepts presented, providing readers with tangible models for success.
In conclusion, "The J.E.D.I. Leader's Playbook" stands as an empowering guide for leaders committed to fostering justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Its engaging style, practical tools, and insightful parallels make it a valuable resource, with the potential for even greater impact with the incorporation of more real-world examples.
Omar L. Harris's The J.E.D.I. Leader's Playbook is a passionate call to action for those working towards a more just and equitable workplace. The book expands on the author's previous work by introducing the concept of "J.E.D.I." leadership, where justice takes center stage alongside diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Harris is quite serious and convincing when putting forward his arguments. Harris convincingly argues that focusing solely on DEI without addressing underlying injustices is like putting out a fire after the house has burned down. Adding "J" to the equation emphasizes the need for accountability and enforcement of organizational values.
Another thing I liked is this book is more than theoretical guide. The book is backed by statistics and research on progress made (and obstacles encountered) in areas like representation in leadership positions, pay ratios and other working environment. This data adds weight to the author's claims and allows readers to track the larger context of the movement.
The book is like a 101 rulebook, quite affirmative and provides comprehensive jagron free practical tools and frameworks for J.E.D.I. leaders, including the "Code J.E.D.I." and guidance on finding your personal "J.E.D.I. why." This actionable approach allows readers to translate the book's message into tangible steps.
Knowing how challenging this topic is, Harris maintains a positive tone. He highlights progress made and emphasizes the potential for positive change when J.E.D.I. principles are embraced.
The author himself has worked in complex organisations so he is well aware of ABCs of structural and functional methods. The J.E.D.I. Leader's Playbook is a valuable resource for anyone seeking to create a more inclusive and equitable workplace.
Harris's passionate and data-driven approach offers a clear framework for action, while his optimistic outlook inspires readers to persevere in the face of challenges. The book is especially relevant for leaders, HR professionals, and anyone committed to social justice within organizations.
While some terms might require additional explanation and the focus on the US context could be broadened, the book's strengths outweigh its weaknesses, making it a worthwhile read for anyone interested in driving positive change.
Omar L. Harris' Be a J.E.D.I. Leader, Not a Boss: Leadership in the Era of Corporate Social Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion emerges as a crucial guide in a world where the principles of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (J.E.D.I.) face unprecedented challenges. Harris adeptly navigates the current climate of resistance, offering a transformative toolkit to rekindle J.E.D.I. as it once was. Interactive assessment tools reasonably complement Harris' accessible and motivational style to put theory into practice.
The book cleverly insists on drawing insightful parallels between modern leadership and chivalrous ideals, portraying J.E.D.I. leaders as heroic contemporary individuals. The author's emphasis on purposeful cultural shaping reverberates deeply. In a certain sense, the book amplifies the call for leaders to actively combat injustices, with a tendency to optimist oversight and self-aware leadership.
The updating of the tale of David and Goliath offers a pedagogical fable of adaptation, inclusion, and intentionality. Harris' book is a motivational powerhouse with valuable tools; and a crucial resource for leaders committed to J.E.D.I.'s playbook. A very entertaining and handy book.
In "The J.E.D.I. Leader’s Playbook," author Omar Harris provides essential tools for integrating justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion into all levels of an organization, fostering success. The book guides organizations through self-assessment, improvement evaluation, capability development, and communication of implementation progress. It emphasizes the importance of modern leadership, urging leaders to embrace a J.E.D.I. approach to better serve employees, customers, communities, the environment, and shareholders.
A recommended read for leaders seeking organizational transformation, the book presents key insights and practical tools to understand the profound impact of infusing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. It highlights the transformative influence of becoming a J.E.D.I. leader rather than merely a boss on an organization's success.
Harris's expertise is evident in the well-researched topics and relevant information presented in the book. The content is well-written and easily comprehensible, making it valuable for leaders seeking improvement and transformation in their organizations. Harris skillfully navigates through the intricacies of fostering a culture that values justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. The book not only addresses theoretical concepts but also provides actionable steps for leaders to implement positive changes.
Engaging and insightful, this book serves as a valuable resource for leaders committed to creating positive and impactful organizational change.
Omar L Harris blew me away with this book. This is my first book by Mr. Harris and this one made me rethink my approach to leadership using The J.E.D.I method. Before you go there this is not based on Star Wars this is however a way to lead with practical guidance as a manager to look at embedding justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace. The clear principles and process to think through embedding the J.E.D.I principles in your business are something that is broken down in a way that can be completely integrated into your business. I love how the graphics and things like the restoration system show how to think new about DEI work. This is very practical in the roles and explains how important the work is that you go beyond DEI and think beyond and embed justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion into the DNA of our teams. I can see how Omar is showing the value of these principles that can modernize how you approach business. The resources provided by Omar by itself more than add value to this book. The amount of additional resources to allow me to expand my business network to include a more diverse group of people working with expanding businesses and companies made the cost of this book minimal. I will be sharing this book with other professionals I come in contact with. The tools are amazing and professionally I can see how this will help expand your knowledge of business and the world.
Once again. Omar L Harris has done it. This is his next installment in the J.E.D.I. Leadership series--his first was "Be A J.E.D.I. Leader"--and now he's given us the Playbook!
I love the way Harris lays out his intentions for J.E.D.I. as a revolutionary toolkit, not just a program. He is passionate and dedicated to his work, and his insistence that the future must include justice, Equity, diversity, and inclusion is awe-inspiring. That's what allows this book to feel more accessible for readers no matter your station in life.
Once again, Harris deals with capitalism fairly while insisting on humanity reigning supreme. He offers unambiguous guidelines for how to not only create this movement and shift in culture but how to keep it sustainable and long-lasting.
Of course like all business psychology books, this one is no exception to the wordiness and overuse of jargon--but Harris thinks of everything. There are chapter summaries in the back of the book which was a great addition and handy for future reference.
All in all, this is a very practical and straightforward book with an eye towards more inclusive leadership styles and ways to invigorate and empower everyone in the workforce. I look forward to what Harris does next in this leadership series!
The J.E.D.I. Leader's Playbook by Omar L. Harris is a self-help book for executives working in the justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion space as well as anyone else who would like to promote these values in their business. The book takes the reader through every step, from finding the 'why' to sustaining progress over the long term.
Harris' manual is comprehensive and includes various practical models, tables, and graphs as well as interesting and up-to-date statistics about the current situation. I particularly liked the chapter about taking care of yourself as a leader. This is often overlooked in other books about this topic. I also thought the structure, with a summary chapter at the end, was very intuitive. Readers who don't want to go through the book chronologically can start with the last chapter to get an overview and then pick out sections that are relevant for them. This makes the book more accessible and easier to read for busy professionals. Although I think some sections could have been condensed slightly, I would highly recommend this book to everyone already working in this field or interested in getting started.
Harris continues his J.E.D.I Leadership series with this insightful second installment. In this book, Harris provides a toolkit for companies and organizations looking to implement justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace. This step by step guide explains the "why" behind these values and how they can benefit businesses in the long run. The writing is clear and easy to understand, despite being filled with the usual business jargon. To those who are more visual learners, Harris provides numerous tables, graphs, and practical models as well as current and interesting statistics about our present situation. His expertise and passion about these topics is evident in his thorough research. My only issue is that the writing can be excessively wordy and repetitive at times. At the end of the book, there is a helpful chapter by chapter summary that highlights important ideas and strategies. The extensive list of resources Harris provides is sure to aide readers wishing to delve deeper into these topics. This is an informative guide for business leaders seeking to strengthen their companies through more socially responsible practices.
Everyone knows what's wrong, but no one wants to do anything about it. Sound familiar? The J.E.D.I. Leader's Playbook by Omar L. Harris provides concrete data and approaches to true social change. He offers a blueprint for flipping the script. In this book, he seems to "codify the why, how, and what...so that anyone (can) impact change."
Harris addresses the very large topics of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. He argues that it's not enough to resist the isms: racism, sexism, classism, etc. Change must come from being ANTI such toxicity.
Further, Harris offers insight and help for those who are so passionate about the need for social change that they neglect self-care. Physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual renewal must be emphasized to decrease burnout. Caring is exhausting. With this book, Harris emphasizes action and focus, allowing energy to be productive and impactful.
For leaders in the corporate, business, and socially-conscious worlds, Harris offers a logical and productive framework for making a positive impact on today's society.
This is a great read for leaders – and anyone who wants to make a positive impact on current societal issues.
Harris, through this revolutionary toolkit, masterfully navigates the turbulent terrain where even the staunchest supporters of J.E.D.I. initiatives have grown weary amidst the storm of ignorance and fear. The narrative, once a steadfast champion for equity, has veered into budgetary concerns, leaving practitioners disheartened and distant. But fear not; the playbook arrives as a game-changer, a breath of fresh air in a suffocating climate. What sets this playbook apart is its comprehensive nature. It's not just a band-aid; it's a surgical tool addressing the deep-seated issues, disarming skeptics, rekindling executive support, and combating the pervasive burnout within J.E.D.I. leaders. Harris doesn't stop at offering solutions; he molds agents of change. From the entry-level to the C-suite, this playbook empowers everyone to become catalysts for meaningful transformation. It's a blueprint for a paradigm shift—moving from resistance to enlightenment, from conflict to unity.
“The J.E.D.I. Leader’s Playbook: The Insider’s Guide to Eradicating Injustices, Expanding Diversity, and Enhancing Inclusion” by Omar L. Harris, is about the injustices in the workplace. This guide is a comprehensive guide that will help you deal with the injustices, expanding diversity and enhancing inclusion in the workplace as we see it today. The author takes each section and breaks it down into digestible content so it’s easier to take it in. It is empowering and quick read to take it all it. The author goes into how this concept came about when he tells his story, its ponderous to say the least. When the world changed in 2020, with the death of George Floyd and covid, the attitude toward certain people got worse not better. If we had a guide like this in the workplace maybe the could start to change. The author goes into why this needed in the workplace and how it can help to break down those barriers that so many people have put up. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is going into a toxic workplace.
This is one of the best books for management to become truly inclusive at work, tackling situations like equity, diversity, and inclusion in a very professional manner. It’s a reminder of the power and advantages we can have in a DEI workplace, and how there are universal playbooks for marketing, finance, Human Resources and legal, but apparently none for diversity, equity, and inclusion. The outcome of a J.E.D.I. leadership is a conscious business with elevated outcomes of belonging, esteem, abundance, and altruism. What better way to do so than by enhancing conditions for employees?
I like that the author employs classical stories like that of David Goliath or classic heroic ideals like those of Jedis to better explain how to navigate modern management situations, and to emphasize a collective of inclusive leaders in the workforce.
What makes this playbook so intuitive is how it provides leaders with a framework for action. It’s a document with clarity at its very essence, but also contains codified information on how an entity plans to achieve success.
The title refers to a leader who values justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. For those who are sincere about bringing these objectives into their place of work, Harris is outlining a fundamental approach. He goes over several reasons why implementing progressive goals helps operate a competitive business rather than hindering it. He ends the book with a comprehensive list of resources for an aspiring J.E.D.I leader and provide actual instances of businesses that have benefited from the adoption of more socially conscious practices.
I appreciate how the author uses traditional tales, like the one about David and Goliath, or traditional heroic ideals, like the Jedi Order, to clarify how to handle contemporary management scenarios.
The way this playbook gives leaders a foundation for action is what makes it so reasonable. It is a document that is fundamentally clear and includes codified information about an entity's success plans.
This book is enlightening and fascinating, and it's a great tool for executives who want to make meaningful changes in their organizations.
I was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed this book! I am not a business person or someone in a managerial position, but I found there was still much to take away from this book. I definitely learned quite a bit about many topics all relating to the similar J.E.D.I approach this book has. The book is broken into three parts where the first one mostly takes you through how to identify strengths or weaknesses in your business, the second focuses on how to address them and make active changes if necessary, and the third challenges you to stay committed and reap the benefits. I appreciated the "homework" throughout the chapters and found quite a lot of insight to how anyone can look at life and breakdown tasks to become more easily managed. I also loved how the last chapter is mostly just a summary of the whole book, which summarizes each section that was covered in much greater detail in the previous chapters. I'd absolutely recommend this book, even if you're not in a position to use it for business reasons.
This would be a very practical manual for any professional looking to better incorporate justice, equity, diversity and inclusion principles into their business practices and their leadership style. This guide is comprehensive and thorough and really hits home the most important points. This book is not just a good read, it comes with ways to take actionable steps toward improvement including self-assessment tools and plans to act on. If this is an area where you, as a professional, or your place of business struggle with, this would be a highly recommended read. This is the second book on this topic by author, Omar L Harris, that compliment one another as part of a series. The other, Be a J.E.D.I. Leader Not a Boss, contains equally compelling content and both are backed by research and real-world examples. If you’re looking for information on the JEDI topics, this would be a highly recommended place to start.
They tell people who want to write to write what they know. Harris knows his audience and knows the subject of business and its practices very well. It is a more modern take on how to be a leader and how to solve problems and make progress that benefits the employee, the business, and the shareholders. Overall, the book is a really good manual but I feel that it could have been written more concisely- after all, if we, as humans would learn to treat each other nicely and in a manner, we would want to be treated, it would solve so many of our problems. Harris lays out how businesses (and others!) could benefit from changing the way they view justice, equality, diversity, and inclusion. It is a good business model that so many could learn from- HOW to be a boss or leader without being a master or lording it over those below you. We're all on the same side and we should work together to make changes in our interactions with others.
The JEDI Leaders playbook provides a framework through which companies and organizations can implement justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace. It defines set standards and performance indicators that DEI departments can shoot for when conducting their practices, which hopefully will transform businesses for the better.
To me, this book has only one flaw. Although the author does an adequate job of coherently displaying his thoughts, he failed to quickly and succinctly establish how, from a company’s perspective, enhancing JEDI could boost the company financially. This should have been touched upon during the introductory segments of the book. Because most readers are likely to be company leaders or aspiring company readers, this is what they would be most interested in.
The title refers to a leader who supports justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Harris is laying out a basic strategy for anyone who is serious about implementing these goals into their workplace. He discusses several reasons why incorporating progressive aims is not a hindrance to running a competitive business but is in fact an asset towards it. He uses real world example of companies that have been strengthened through the adoption of more socially responsible practices, and includes an extensive list of resources for an aspiring J.E.D.I leader at the end of the book.
Like nearly every book I have encountered about business psychology, the book does tend towards excessive wordiness and repetition. There is even a section towards the end that serves only to summarize each of the previous sections (which may be helpful or unnecessary, depending on your point of view). There are, after all, only so many ways to restate the obvious but important points that are discussed. These criticisms aside, The J.E.D.I Leader's Handbook is both more practical and more well-intentioned than most books of that type. If the topics discussed are something that interest you or that you think will be relevant to your work, I recommend it.
The J.E.D.I. Leaders Playbook is packed with plenty of great tips and ideas for being a strong leader and running a company. All of the ideas are explained clearly and in a way that makes you feel like you are having a conversation with someone who really knows what they are talking about. The discussion about how inequality still persists was really interesting and unfortunate. Ideas like the Stockdale paradox, comparing business to Judo and Karate, WIGs, and much more are also great. This is a read-several-times and every-so-often type of book that I’m glad I picked up.
I highly recommend this book to everyone because it helps you create a nice blueprint for running a business, and a lot of the ideas can apply to daily life, too.
The J.E.D.I Leader's Playbook, book 2, rewrites the rules on how to improve diversity and equity within a company. The author does a thorough job of helping leaders identify areas of concern, assess what is working and what is not, setting priorities, and creating steps to succeed.
While this book is meant for businesses, I found many takeaways that can be applied to the individual, such as self-assessment and identifying workable goals.
The book is easy to read with short sections, allowing time for reflection. A must-read for anyone in business as it not only addresses diversity issues but demonstrates how inclusivity benefits the business as a whole.
This book is the perfect guide for DEI managers to understand the importance of adding justice to the acronym. Justice usually translates into accountability, a point Mr. Harris highlights a part of the J.E.D.I. leaders code. J.E.D.I. leaders can’t ignore inequity nor injustice - it’s their duty to stand up and be the voices people need, even if its to express an unpopular or unrequested opinion.
I also like how the book highlights the importance of choosing optimism to ensure success of business endeavors - optimists believe their actions make a difference and also define outcomes, while pessimists believe they have no control over their fate.
The J.E.D.I. Leader's Playbook by Omar L. Harris is a wonderful book that provides essential tools and how to nurture values in a business. The book allows the reader to learn about each step, why it is necessary, and how to proceed ahead with it before moving on. It is a practical book containing statistics that are up-to-date, tables, graphs, and models which are extremely helpful in presenting the information and keeping readers informed. I would recommend this book for every working individual as we are all leaders in a sense, with or without the title.
Omar Harris provides a great roadmap to implement JEDI initiatives in your organization. He walks through each aspect of implementation and provides practical steps to achieve the goals while creating win win situations benefiting multiple stake holders while delivering better traditional outcomes.
