Benyamin (born 1971, Benny Daniel) is an Indian novelist and short story writer in Malayalam language from Nhettur, Kulanada, Pattanamtitta district of the south Indian state of Kerala. He is residing in the Kingdom of Bahrain since 1992, from the age of twenty, and his works appear regularly on Malayalam publications in Kerala.

മറ്റു നോവലുകളിൽ നിന്നു വ്യത്യസ്തമായിട്ടാണ് ബെന്യാമിൻ ഈ നോവൽ എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ബെന്യാമിൻ്റെ തന്നെ "മഞ്ഞവെയിൽ മരണങ്ങൾ" എന്ന നോവൽ ക്രിസ്തീയ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ എഴുതിയ വളരെ വ്യത്യസതമായൊരു ത്രില്ലറാണ്. ഈ പുസ്തകവും ക്രിസ്തീയ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ എഴുതിയതാണെങ്കിലും ഒരു ത്രില്ലറെന്ന് ഇതിനെ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാനാവില്ല.

The brilliant VKN-isque narration overcomes the mediocrity in all other areas.

P.S. This book expects some background knowledge about the history of Christianity in Kerala. If you know nothing about it, like me, it might be difficult to understand the story, but still can be an enjoyable read.

An excellent book (IMO), but be warned that those who do not have a background of the Church history will be at sea when you read this even if you are a Benyamin fan.

വിശ്വാസത്തിലുടെ കപ്പലുകയറി വരു‌‍‌‍‍ന്നത് അധികാരം തന്നെയാണ്. വിശ്വാസത്തില്‍ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം നേടി കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ എല്ലാത്തിലും സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യമായി

I bought it after I read that Benyamin has a book on the subject of link: Syrian Christian rivalry in Kerala. With recent public spats between two factions and all the hullabaloo about it, and also being a Syrian Christian I thought I need a better grasp of where things stand. Don't take this for history, it is just a fictionalised account and all the embellishment of fiction is there.

This is a very small book at just 138 pages. The cover is unattractive with dominant red colour and unprofessionally merged images of some wall nails and crucified Christ.

This is my first Benyamin book. After finishing the book, I understand why he is such a big name in the business. He can tell stories well, can maintain the suspense, meshes the life in 1950s agrarian Kerala, the religious traditions, and a the myths and legends of the land in the right mixture. Not to forgot the main aspect — weaving together of Syrian Christian history which mainly focuses on the recent schism in the community.

The character I liked best is മാന്തളിര്‍ മത്തായി (Manthalir Mathai). After finishing the novel, I wished I knew some one like him: just, hard working and dedicated, rich and street-smart, all rolled into one. He has a brother Manthalir Kunjukunju who have short-temper when it comes to church issues.

This novel also brushes on other historical events like വിമോചന സമരം (Liberation Stuggle) etc. But they all are said in passing; but a keen observer might gain insights from many passing references throughout the book — about the other factions (Roman Catholics (Syro-Malabar), Mar Thomites, റീത്ത് (Malankara Catholics), Pentacostals etc), the vain pride among Syrian Christian families about their family heritage and so on.

About the title: അക്കപ്പോര് means fight (വഴക്ക്, ലഹള, ശണ്ഠ).

Fascinating historical fiction presented through witty writing. It's a simple and easy way to get perspective on the different Churches in Kerala. The observation made on the link between colonial/foreign influence and splits in the church is very interesting.

മാന്തളിർ എന്ന പ്രദേശത്തെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കിയുള്ള രചനകളിൽ ആദ്യത്തെ പുസ്തകം. മലങ്കര സഭയിലെ ബാവ-മെത്രാൻ കക്ഷി തർക്കമാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിലെ കേന്ദ്ര വിഷയം. മാന്തളിർ മത്തായി, മാന്തളിർ കുഞ്ഞൂഞ്ഞ് എന്നീ മുഖ്യകഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ ഇവിടെ വിഷയം മുന്നോട്ട് കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നതിനുള്ള ഉപാധികൾ മാത്രം. നാട്ടുശൈലികൾ, പ്രാദേശികമായ അറിവുകൾ, ചില രാഷ്ട്രീയ പരാമർശങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയും ഇതിലുണ്ട്.

When I started reading this I didn't understand anything, so then I had to Google on the history of Manthalir and read it. The story takes place in Manthalir and talks about the fight between the Catholics and Patriachs over the church. I loved the subtle humor at times

The book is written by the famous author Benyamin. The background of the book is the ecclesiastical conflicts in Kerala. Even though it's a work of fiction, it is evident that the book concurs with the history very well. The thread of the entire book is based in a family in Manthalir region. The descriptions, terminologies and traditions mentioned in the book may not be equally understood by all Keralites. . I felt the warmth of my hometown when I read "Lanthan Batheriyile Lutheeniyakal", but didn't in the case of this book not because the writing is bad, but just because I have no acquaintance with such descriptions.. My be that's one reason for this book to have an average rating.

However the book is a good read. It entertains you. One can easily visualise the narrations and will surely enjoy the simplicity of the author's storytelling skills..

The only other book I have read from this author is Aadujeevitham. Do not go with an expectation of reading something akin to that novel, for every book is unique.

I've been working hard to get back into malayalm literature. Had stopped reading lit soon after Class X, and that was back in 2009. When Aadujeevitam became a popular read during the college days I couldnt relate to it. Malayalam literature had moved far from the era of Malayatoor that I was familar with . Benyamin was seen as one of the path breakers in this change.

What motivated me to take up this book recently was this interview on this book.

The summary of the book is this: Benyamin's personal history is heavily connected with hthe evolution of Kerala Christianity and its seccessions and ousts. He's put across this history in a digestable format, as seen from the perspective of a fictional town called Manthalir.

The narrative is interesting but sometimes I felt that the charecters development and revalaations are a little too dynamic and rapid. I had made an attempt to read the hardcopy but it didnt work out for me. Found it too hard to focus. So I managed with DC-Books/StoryTel audiobook rendition of the book, which I strongly recommend listening to.

I had just started Aadujeevitham, and was mesmerised by the magic of Benyamin's words. Although I couldn't finish the book due to some reasons, I was impressed with the author and his way of narration. That is the reason that I had to buy Akkaporinte... when I saw it in a bookstore in Cochin Airport. This novel was published in 2008. Set in the backdrop of a dispute regarding the administration of a Church, the story and the characters in general gave me a very refreshing feel. I felt that I was reading Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 100 years of Solitude ! The characters were all in a way similar to the Buendias.
I don'y have a knowledge about Christian papacy and thus it was a bit difficult for me to understand the terminology, but that did not matter much.

The only thing Benyamin proved is that he is not capale of handling such a vast topic. It is a historical fiction, but the novelist failed to recreate the period. Here and there some names of historical figures, thats it. And is he writing to point fingure at Manorama? The entire canvass is used to give unnecessary importance to Manorama.

Perfectly describes the old Christian communities in the Kerala especially in the Maanthalir Desam. The novel clearly depicts the system that prevailed across Kerala in the 18th and 19th centuries. The classic writing touch of Benyamin lies everywhere in the book.

One of the books which I've found very hard to finish. This novel basically deals with historical power struggles over a church in Kerala. But perhaps I being unaware of different sects and history of Keralite Christians, couldn't recognize or understand many of the things discussed in the novel. Also inclusion of many reports in the novel badly affected the continuity of the novel. Will recommend it only to those who have a good knowledge of the history of Christians of Kerala.
