When a hardcore gamer downloads an update that transports him into his favorite game, Dungeon Explorer Chronicles, he expects a life of pretty girls and epic fights. He starts as a student at Adventurers’ High, the top school for budding adventurers, eager to dive into the fantastical dungeon that’s appeared in modern-day Japan. But one glance in the mirror shatters his dreams of badassery! He’s entered the game as Piggy, the love-to-hate overweight villain whose stalker-like obsession with his reluctant fiancée spells his doom. With elitist bullies roaming the school halls and cutthroat adventurers lurking in the dungeon, our hero has to act fast to lose weight and level up if he wants to survive and break free from his scripted fate. Using his peerless knowledge of the game, he’s ready to exploit every trick to become the world’s greatest unsung hero!
Not entirely sure what to think of this book. The MC wakes up in the world of his favourite MMO RPG as one of the (despised) side characters of said game. It is a game in a modern day-like Earth but with dungeons that provide the game like powers while inside the dungeon. Deciding he wants to keep his distance from the story of the game, he instead chooses to protect his family, first by testing his knowledge of the world and then by power leveling himself and his sister.
It is a kind of a story I tend to enjoy, and the fact that the character does not instantly become OP is a big plus. On the other hand, there is a decent amount of exposition (not unexpected in light novels) and the MC's goals are rather isolated and passive, a trait I usually dislike. These kind of stories are carried by the personalities of the characters and these traits tend to isolate and focus on the MC at the cost of other characters.
Still, it was an enjoyable enough read and maybe things change in the future when the MC gets a bit more confident in his abilities.
I would give this 4.5 stars if I could. As far as isekai stories go, this might shape up to be one of my favorites, I really love it! BTdubs when I saw Souta, I mean the protagonist, not the original Souta Narumi.
The prose is very efficient, and for this type of story I really appreciate that. I say that because the protagonist, Souta Narumi, Piggy (pick your poison) explains everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. Not one stone is left unturned, if Souta is aware of something that was previously in the game, he will talk about it at length not letting a single detail escape. Regarding efficiency, the protagonist is extremely rational and competent, it's no wonder he used to be one of the best players in DEC. It's really cool to see!
I have read the manga for this beforehand and I have to say, the light novel is leeeaaagues better. Souta isn't made out to be as pathetic as the manga makes him out to be. In fact, he's actually really cool and has a backbone. An example being when he started arguing with people from a high ranking clan since he refused to party with them.
Kaoru is eh... I don't really like or hate her to be honest. I hope that the protagonist isn't locked into being her love interest, if he plans to pursue anyone romantically at all.
Kano is the GOAT though, probably my second favorite character besides Souta.
Overall: A really good novel, I definitely want to check out the others in the series! I give that one hundred gazillion slimes out of ten!
A story with nothing new, we’ve seen this kind of stories before. But, is well written. A good pace, with a nice character progression. Not too many side characters are introduce and developed, but this makes this book easy and fun to read. Sometimes a little repetitive, explaining topics that has been already explained, the action scenes are well narrated and the plot, although not deep, hopefully will get developed in the next volume.
Great new protagonist, very likeable while still being plausible, great use of knowledge and character devo, interesting take on a common trope! Very much worth the investment and definitely getting the sequel! Looking forward to villains getting the payback they've earned.
A friend recommended this book to me and I devoured it in one sitting. I love it. It’s a great take on a common trope with a strong male main character. His little sister is probably my favorite character and I hope to see his parents in the dungeon with him.
