VOLUME 12 OF LEGEND OF THE ARCH MAGUSAn Arch Magus dies, only to find himself in the body of a young man in a medieval Kingdom. He finds out that he is the second son of a Duke, exiled to a desolated town by his own family. Shackled by the notorious reputation of his new shell, he tries his best to develop his domain, implementing new policies and innovations, leading his subjects to prosperity. In this world where magic is undeveloped, he shall once again pave a new path.
Finally! We get a genuine entree instead of a side dish of the many-course meal that is the Legend of the Arch Magus series. This was released over a week ago and I had to do a double-take when I saw it from the corner of my eye on Amazon. I'm following the author and yet I don't remember getting a notification.
That aside, I'm happy to report that this volume was a return to form for the series. The previous book felt like a side story, but we finally got some plot progress involving the Demon Invasion. This volume felt pretty balanced - we got to see some developments in the political landscape and relationship with the Empire, some progress with the demon invasion, and plenty of smaller battles among established characters. I think the lack of these things made the previous book hard to enjoy for me because the last thing I want 11 books in is to follow a bunch of characters who are just being introduced rather than our "main" characters.
There are plenty of oh sh-- reaction moments as egos get put in their place, which is always a good time. We also get to see some characterization as the plot breathes a little between battles. Parts of it reminded me of the Ant arc from Hunter x Hunter, though I will just leave it at that so you can read it for yourself.
This is the 12th book, so we all know what we're here for. I thoroughly enjoyed this and I look forward to the next installment.
"Coalition Army," the 12th book in Michael Sisa’s "Legend of the Arch Magus" series, published in 2024 and narrated by Tom Taylorson, is a high-octane addition to the isekai fantasy saga of Lark Marcus, the reincarnated Arch Magus. This audiobook delivers strategic warfare, magical innovation, and escalating stakes. "Coalition Army" captivates with its grand conflicts and Taylorson’s stellar narration.
In "Coalition Army," Lark, the exiled duke’s son wielding ancient magical expertise, orchestrates large-scale military and diplomatic efforts as his domain faces mounting external pressures. Sisa excels at showcasing Lark’s brilliance, with highlights including his deployment of magical technologies and tactical maneuvers to strengthen his coalition. The book’s focus on coordinated warfare - blending magic, logistics, and strategy - creates thrilling set pieces that feel both epic and calculated. Sisa expands the world’s geopolitical landscape, introducing rival powers and complex alliances that add tension and broaden the narrative’s scope. Lark’s ability to transform challenges into opportunities, whether through innovative spells or governance, remains a satisfying draw for anyone who enjoys progression fantasy.
Tom Taylorson’s narration remains a highlight, and as always “excellent.” His versatile performance - commanding for Lark’s strategic moments, intense for battle sequences - infuses the story with energy, making even expository passages engaging. Taylorson’s ability to differentiate characters ensures a seamless listening experience, cementing his role as a series asset.
In conclusion, "Coalition Army" is wonderfully woven storytelling and a compelling listen for fans of Lark’s unstoppable ascent, offering inventive magic and large-scale strategy. Taylorson’s narration elevates the experience, but deeper character work would enhance its impact. Ideal for those seeking escapist fantasy, it delivers high-stakes competence, with fast action.
deeply honest moment the execution and setup of the wider fantasy opera isn't well execution. Author drops people and characters that are so so compelling. Its really frustrating to read. I perfer first person as a reader in general and when a fantasy world I like the world to widen through char I'd invested through. This is like old school 70s/80s fantasy. where it would POV hop to people and events you barely care about which ruins the stakes of the series because each new zone hasn't been sold to us to care.
We care about blackstone town because it's been invested in we bit by bit saw MC build it up. Expand their students even small side stories live in an area we are given the word count and solid characters to care about.
errr
So, i'm left in this frustration fantasy pov hop fantasy opera!
This is a fun series. Only issue is that each book ends with me wanting to find out what is coming next and then I have to wait a few months for the next book and often, as in this case, I can't do that yet. Still, I love the concept, characters, and plot. It is well written and I tend to read through one of these books in a day. Great for trips as I lose myself in the story and suddenly the flight is over.
Another good addition to the series. This one deals with the empire. The emperor is a crazy bastard but has absolute power over his people and the land. Having the demons show up on his doorstep leads to quite a few problems for him. He has absolute power but he can't protect his people. King Lark comes and offers his assistance but he is too stubborn to accept his help.... at first. Overall still a good series.
Wonderfully woven story! Very entertaining and delightful, I couldn't put it down once I started to read. I'm anxious for the next installment. My suggestion is to keep King Lukas single because it seems to be the case that when marriage or a significant other is attached to the main figure the story line begins to fade. Like is a sage, a wise grandfather looking after everyone, a profound teacher or deeply thoughtful leader wise exciting and caring person.
As per usual with this series, I thoroughly enjoyed my time reading this book but it was over way too fast. In fact, that's my biggest issue this time round. This book didn't feel like it progressed the story all that much.
But I suppose the same is true for most of these books. This is definitely a binge series more than an event series. However, if you've made it this far, then you already know that, just as you know all the other usual faults with this series. If you're anything like me you recognise those faults and just love this series anyway for what it is.
So it's 4 starts for this book. Here's to hoping the next one comes out a little quicker, or is at least a little longer.
This addition to the story became a little stale only because the time the author spent introducing backstories to existing main characters. Although it evened out the plot line and the world building, I find the story gets stale once the center point main character, the archmage, is Left behind for more plot building, the story loses it's excitement. I like how the author has created a more balanced antagonist in the demon Lord, as the demon Lord is interested in his prey and the history of the time he was locked away. Overall it's a fun, well-paced story. It has some editing issues but nothing that ruins the plot line. A good simple fun entertaining story.
Audio: 5 Stars, have I said this narrator is great? They ARE!!!!
Story:I thought this was going to be the last book......it is not! I do hope the series ends within one or 2 more books, I get bored when the series are too long. Also, can a demon eat the Emperor? I didn't like this book as so much time was wasted on war. Again, it's a me thing, I started this series because it had a "slice of life" vibe. Onto my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!
OK, you’re really gonna want to read this book, especially if you like this series! Because the ending is really awesome and a great set up for the next book. What can I say after so many books? The writing is awesome, the characters are fantastic, the action is fun and engaging and not overblown to where it eclipses the rest of the story. If you haven’t read the previous books, you know what you’ll be reading next.
It was good. We get to see the power struggles, the ploys, and then the realization that all of that is meaningless if they are all dead! So good fights and most things felt plausible given the world and setting.
I find I enjoyed the earlier books where he wasn’t such a heaven defying figure and was more focused on smaller stakes were more interesting personally, but this is the nature progression so it makes sense.
Loved the series great pace to every book the world the auther has created is one of the best ,the main character develops with every release he is not a straight out hero but has his own morals and beliefs . The fight and battle scenes well written, could not put it down till finished keep them coming !
I had really been waiting for this book. I always recommend it. This book is longer, but it still feels so short. When you start reading it, you can't stop. I enjoyed every chapter. I can't wait to see what's coming next! New places, new characters, a bigger coalition! Thank you for continuing working in this series.
King Lark returns from the Beast Man Kingdom after helping them to destroy the Demon army. He sends 500 Blackstone Knights to the Empire to help with the demon problem there. The Emperor doesn't realize the seriousness of the problem. Political mechanizations, battle, and intrigue ensue. I like the action, humor, and intrigue. I look forward to another book.
I like how domineering the demon lord is. He is a worthy rival for Lark. However, he may be too powerful for him. After all, Lark's body is nothing compared to that of a demon's. I still hate the emperor. In the words of Vulcan, " STUPID. F*UCKING. IDIOT. " These words are the perfect description of the emperor.
Books were all good, they got better as they went. I’ve read all of them now and want more. Wish they were longer or just more available. Did not need to skip pages. I am still waiting for the love interest to happen, has been hints/foreshadowing but come on already. Can’t believe I’ve not heard more about this series it’s top notch.
I bought and read all twelve books, they were mesmerising! But I have one complaint, was this the ending?? I hope not! I would have given you five stars but you have left me hanging and it does not sit right, either say it’s the end or say another book will be along shortly. Michael don’t leave us hanging…
What a great continuation of this book really am enjoying the series and the direction that the state will continue to read a series and hope for the next book comes out some enough 5 stars.
This long wait (not really that long in just impatient) between books is impossible!!! I need another book immediately! There's never enough for me! Love the book! Keep it up!
Another great installment in this addictive series. So glad the author has come back rejuvenated and filled with more tales of adventure for Lark after their sabbatical 😆
For the love of god, please start your books with the MC. This book was very hard to remember because it started with side characters. Once the MC was reintroduced, the whole series came back to me. After that it was fantastic awesomeness.
This series is such a treat! Im always looking forward to the next release and I’m enjoying the saga to its fullest. Great OP protagonist and can’t wait for the finale!
Another truly engaging story with a host of characters with interesting suite of powers and personalities. Some great laughs on the mix too. Can’t wait for the next one!!!!! I am hooked!
I have liked the previous books very well until this one but the use of the f___ word is concerning. Hopefully future volumes will stop this usage. It is unnecessary and distracts from the story.
There are books that have a much higher rating that are just terrible. This is one of my favourite series. After 2020 a lot of stories have just gone downhill but he's still continuing his good form.
I like the storyline. I have all the books in this series and can't wait for the next one each time. Anyone who likes these types of stories would be a good candidate.
