With touches of Outcasts, Terra Nova (without the dinosaurs), and Lost, this is an entertaining, as well as thought-provoking story. Although, at the beginning, I got the feeling I had come into the middle of a story because of references to events already happened, I soon picked up the threads and settled in for a rousing and exciting story. The characters are well-defined, and Ty, the organic life-form which integrates the ship Tyche’s systems, is a delight with its pithy comments interspersed with singing commercials about hot dogs and bologna. Brongill, the hard-bitten soldier, trained for war, espionage, and assassination, is contrasted with Alderina who offers him love, hope, and a future. His struggles to reconcile his training with her beliefs in their new life blends with their struggle to find the survivors and succeed in making a new world in the face of the determination of others to complete the destruction of their new home.
PS (but no Spoiler): The final battle between Alderina, her dog Lafitte, and a Synthetic Intelligence continually repaired by nanites is just plain exciting!
If you like science fiction with characters you’ll care for, I recommend Animosity.
