Three years ago, Angie was traveling home from Christmas visit in New Orleans with her partner.

She was the bored passenger in a cramped up Miata, when she pulled up the notes app on her iPhone. She began writing what was on her mind as they traveled along the highway for a six hour drive. That day she wrote the third chapter of her book, although at the time she didn’t know it would be her third chapter … or anything else for that matter.

After arriving home, life happened, Angie got busy with work and forgot about the note.

A few weeks later she was looking in her notes for something else, when she came across “the note” and began reading. She didn’t realize it was what she had written at first, as she read she assumed it was something she had copied and pasted. Angie was more than half way through “the note” when she realized it was what she had written. Angie was shocked, surprised then happy, it was good. Real good and she thought “I wrote that?”

For so many years Angie has ignored this story, and others that run through her crazy brain. She feels like it is fear that held her back, worried that she didn't have enough time or talent to write, much-less complete a book. Maybe both? Probably both.

Angie realized then, the story should, at the very least, put down on paper. That’s when she began her journey.

Over the next three years, Angie pored her thoughts out onto paper, researching hiring editors and proofreaders, then decided to pull the trigger to self publish. The self publishing part itself was pretty easy, but the marketing, and getting her book out to the masses, well that’s a different story.

Angie lives in the charming town of Alpharetta, Georgia, and is currently working on her second novel. In those precious moments of relaxation at home - Angie finds comfort in reading and being a loyal viewer of Survivor. Angie is a lover of all genres of music, anything from pop, rock to jazz. Staying active is very important to Angie, she has been a trainer at Life Time for the past sixteen years, so going for a run or challenging herself with obstacle courses is part of which she is.

Beyond personal pursuits, Angie finds immense happiness in the company of her partner. They both have a serious case of wanderlust, always seeking out new places to explore, collecting memories along the way. They embrace the great outdoors, kayaking, camping, and explorations of quaint towns with unique clothing stores and delightful, one-of-a-kind coffee shops.

Completing her family are two incredible daughters who are currently pursuing their education in college, along with an adorable Pomeranian dog and beautiful Himalayan cat.

In this story, Some Must Die, Angie hopes to challenge readers to open their minds, think critically, and embark on a transformative journey.

This was a different mystery thriller than I am used to, but I really ended up enjoying it. I was a little confused at first with the chapters and how they bounced around, but once I got used to it, I was able to follow along and it made sense.

The story starts out with a young girl, Leslie, being kidnapped from her home. As the kidnappers begin to explain why, the entire story begins to unfold.

Chris/Carl had a rough childhood with his father. He went through things no child should ever have to. He then went to go live with his uncle and his life started to turn around. Went back to school, got a job, a vehicle and saved money. He bought a camper and was planning to travel after graduation. After a night at a friend’s daughter birthday party goes wrong when he discovers she is being SA’d his entire future changes.

Carl ends up saving and taking justice for several children who are in horrible situations. He gives the children a choice if they would like to leave their situation and become part of the family with him and Bonnie.

During the entire read you wonder, who exactly are the good guys and the bad guys. Yes they are committing crimes, but it’s for the justice for the harm these parents/adults are causing to these children. It makes you wonder how much of a crime it is when it’s done in justice of those hurting children.

Samantha takes a photo of a missing girl poster and it’s always stuck with her through the years. It’s crazy how it all comes full circle.

This book bounces primarily between Carl, Samantha, and Leslie. The author does a great job at creating and going into great detail of each character. Each one has their own story and how they become part of the family. The story is mysterious and has you wanting to know how the story is going to continue and unfold. Will they all ever have their happy ending? Will more become part of the family? Will they get caught?

Trigger Warning: Child Abuse, Domestic Violence, and Abuse, Graphic Content

Once in a while, we read a book and get emotionally involved with the characters, and when we finish that book, it feels like saying goodbye to a close friend. Some Must Die by Angie D. Comer is one such book for me.

This book places child abuse and domestic violence at the core of its theme, where our protagonist, Carl, acts as a vigilante to deliver justice to the abusers. He is an anti-hero, doing the right thing in the wrong way. The family is formed of six children who are survivors of abuse and violence, and as readers, we get to witness their journey as outlaws.

When I started this book, I assumed it would just be a teenage drama where our characters would remain between the ages of 12-18, but seeing/reading them grow up from 1968 to 2025 was something I didn't expect. It provided me with time to understand each of them and the family dynamic as our characters matured.

Even though it's a crime thriller, at many instances, it doesn't feel that way because most of the time, our characters—Carl, Bonny, Lea, Saul, Sherry, and Matthew—are on a road trip, going from one place to another, living their mundane lives until "vengeance" (Batman reference) strikes again, and the action takes over.

The story is seamlessly written, with a few side plots that I initially found irrelevant, but when merged with the main plot, they blew my mind. One such astounding example is Dr. Stephanie Archer’s subplot, which turned out to be imperative and shifted the narrative in a completely different direction and genre. This is the twist I didn’t see coming when our crime thriller turns into almost post-apocalyptic fiction. I was awestruck thinking about how grounded the story started and the turns it took to conclude in something I didn’t expect.

This twist comes with a small disadvantage, though, because until it happened, the majority of the story revolved around our family of outlaws. However, after the twist, the focus shifted to Sam and her mother, Dr. Stephanie. I would have loved it more if the unity of the family had been as consistent as it was before the worldwide crisis.

The characterization in this book is magnificent. My favorite among all the characters was Carl; he was sensitive but fierce, loving, kind, and protective, and more than anything, unpredictable. His intolerance of child abuse and violence makes him deadly and dangerous. The family of outlaws is trauma-bound; the suffering of these characters makes the reader empathetic toward them, and seeing them happy later in life delivers a sense of happiness.

This book ends with a prospective hint of its sequel, and I would love to read about our characters and how they will tackle new challenges while maintaining their bond, which provides them the strength to stick together through thick and thin.

It's a 4.5/5⭐ for me. Highly recommended for the variety of elements I discussed. More than anything, read it for the character development of our outlaws.

Interesting story...but...

Interesting story but a bit all over the place. I was also distracted by all of the typos throughout the book.

The synopsis was so ambiguous to me, I decided to just let it roll and listen. This book is not JUST about Leslie. Her story is a spoke in the wheel on this roller coaster and I was pleasantly surprised. I did not know where it was going; I just enjoyed the ride. For a mystery/thriller fan like me, it says a lot if a book can keep getting me to say, "wait, what?" Angie Comer does a great job of keeping the reader interested and engaged throughout the twists and turns.

I will say that I was not a big fan of the way it ended. But it guess we had to get off the ride somewhere.

This book was a present and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it from start to finish. It was almost two stories weaved very effectively into one novel. The chapters are quite short which was beneficial as each one provided updates on individual character’s stories. If the author were to embark on a second novel (or even a follow up to this one), I would certainly ensure that I read it immediately. Very strongly recommended.

I think this is one of my favourite Thrillers of 2024! The plotting is fast paced, intricate and so gripping; with wonderfully complex characters. I knew from the first page that I was going to love this book and I finished it in one sitting. The dark societal issues and emotional trauma was portrayed with authenticity and sensitivity and I find myself still thinking about it, days after I've finished the book. Just brilliant!

Angie D. Comer’s Some Must Die is a gripping, genre-blending journey that spans decades and defies convention. What begins as a crime thriller quickly evolves into a morally complex saga of survival, vengeance, and found family. The story follows Carl and a group of children, each scarred by abuse, who form an unconventional family living off the grid, bound not by blood but by trauma and fierce loyalty.

Comer’s writing is visceral and unflinching. She doesn’t shy away from the darkness, child abuse, domestic violence, and systemic failure, but she also gives space for healing, love, and resilience. The pacing is brisk, with short chapters that shift perspectives and timelines, keeping the reader emotionally engaged and constantly questioning: who are the real villains, and what does justice truly look like?

Carl, the anti-hero at the heart of the story, is unforgettable. His moral ambiguity is handled with nuance; he’s both a protector and a vigilante, and his choices challenge the reader to confront uncomfortable truths. The narrative arcs of Samantha, Leslie, and Dr. Stephanie Archer add depth and unexpected twists, especially as the story veers into near post-apocalyptic territory in its final act.

Some Must Die isn’t just a thriller; it’s a reckoning. Comer invites us to sit with the uncomfortable, to question our own moral compass, and to consider what survival really means when the system fails.

I kept seeing this one all over Facebook so I got to read it. I found this one to be riveting and hard to put down. Starts with a missing girl and turns into so much more. It was like having Robin Hood and Mary Poppins in the same body. Really surprised I loved it as much as I did.
