New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author, Susan Stoker has a heart as big as the state of Tennessee where she lives, but this all American girl has also spent the last fourteen years living in Missouri, California, Colorado, Indiana, and Tennessee. She's married to a retired Army man who now gets to follow her around the country.
This is a new favorite of mine from this author. There’s just something about this story that digs into your heart and won’t let go!
Remi Stephenson is a cartoonist and a bit of an introverted loner. She and her boyfriend have broken up. Vincent ‘Kevlar’ Hill is a Navy SEAL who has just broken up with his girlfriend. They were each supposed to go to Hawaii with their significant others, but after said breakups, they each head there alone. They both end up on the same dive/snorkel trip, where they get left behind by the boat captain. Suffice it to say, danger brings out the best or worst in people, and Kevlar is thrilled with the way Remi reacts. I’m not exactly sure how the captain was able to leave without Remi noticing, since she was only snorkeling, but that’s a minor detail.
The story moves rapidly, and the amount of tension is perfect. These are protagonists that are likable and part of an extended team that is going to be fun to get to know. This is the first book in the series and it looks to be an excellent one if the storylines are each this good!
I definitely think this is her most insta-love story to date but it was still super cute! Getting stranded in the middle of the ocean with a stranger shouldn't be a cute way to meet someone but it actually was. Their story is so unique and crazy but I really enjoyed the ride!
Remi was a fabulous heroine! Real and multi-dimensional. And Vincent (Kevlar) was appropriately hot and heroic. I suspected the bad guy early on, but he had a satisfying comeuppance. A great introduction to the new team! And Blink... If you read the book, you'll know. Can't wait for his book.
No, not really, but there is one of the wive's named Cheyenne. Imagine my shock. She also has a very simliar sense of humor to me and her husband is "Dude." Yeah. I got ghostwritten into a story LMAO (I also found out, to my glee, she has her own book with Dude and so do all the other characters and I'm very excited to check them out).
I unabashedly had an amazing goofy time with this book. These kind of covers always turn me off because of cringe factor, but it was a skip the line loan from my library so I decided to give it a whirl. I had so much fun. Was it goofy and campy sometimes? Yes. But lovingly.
I want to scream from the rooftops the main elements this book did wonderfully that most DON'T: COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE MAIN CHARACTERS.
It seems like an impossible task nowadays. This book shows you can have open communication, doubts, and worries between characters, and still make a great love story. I adored how both the characters were TOTALLY self aware that "hey, we kinda just met, and yes this is a little bit wacky, but I ??? really like you???" and then decided to keep going with their feelings. It was the fact they continuously acknowledged the weird circumstance in the room that might make it seem insane or irrational, that then actually MADE IT UNDERSTANDABLE AND REAL when they chose to continue. (And taking it step by step, mind you! communicating the whole way!) For instance, dressing up like condiments to go grocery shopping with your best friend is weird. But if you look at each other and say "this is weird", with a nod of confirmation and continue onwards.. It's not weird anymore. At least not to you two, and that's all that matters.
I know that instalove can happen and love happens at various speeds, but it's such a pet peeve when characters in books are like "lol isn't crazy that we JUST met but I like?? wanna have your babies??" "Cool ok" This book was a beacon of a lighthouse in the darkness and I can't kiss it enough for that.
The communication love continues even during the spicy scenes when Kevlar is self aware about certain things and makes sure to address them (being vague to avoid spoilers).
I LOVE the team members and their significant others, and I'm very glad they have their own works because I can't wait to read about them all individually. This book was full of great intrigue, action, and love. It was a book that made me say "wow, reading does go by fast when you're having fun."
The only slight criticism that I have is the consistent talk about how challenging it is to be a military partner, being gone so much, leaning on others, the stress, etc. I realize it has a place and importance in the book because Remi isn't familiar with the life, so it wasn't out of left field, and it's great for those readers who also aren't familiar. But much of my life has been intertwined with the military so it's the same things I've heard over and over and over, and it got a little annoying. But again, that's just a personal criticism, it's not preachy or overwhelming in context of the overall book.
this is what happens when you don't judge books by their covers and just go in with vibes and a good open mind <3 can't wait to read the others.
It was crazy how Kevlar and Remi had common backstories with their ex's and the trip. I kept waiting to find out the ex's were together somehow, it would have been the cherry on the sundae. lol
Their meeting on the boat and what happened after was so crazy! I don't know if I would have been able to be as calm as Remi, even if I knew I had a SEAL stranded with me. It was fun to see the two get to know each other and take that leap into wanting more and going after it. They moved their relationship quickly, yet not. Full speed ahead for introducing friends and family, not so much for physical things, which was probably good. Kevlar had a good reason and he was playing for keeps.
Remi really fit in well with the SEAL's and their woman and even managed to breech the wall of the one SEAL that was stuck in his own head. All of that mattered at the end when all the drama started to happen. I was glad that during it all Remi had an ally at her side and loved how in the aftermath she was so protective of that person. It made for a happy ending all around.
This was such a badly written book.. The hawaii part where Remi n Vincent spend time together was good.. But other than that, nothing about this book was redeemable..
Vincent was a useless boyfriend. He only kept saying that he wouldn't be there for Remi for pretty much most of the book, which just spoiled the romance.. And yes, he wasn't there for her when she needed him the most.. When she was in danger, he just sat around uselessly, without doing anything productive to find her..
There was also no mission shown in this book, which is a letdown because there is no evidence at all that Vincent was a great team leader.. He wasn't in the slightest.. His character was not fleshed out properly..
Next, when somebody is talking shit about your girlfriend, you stand up and make sure that they know its not ok to do that.. Instead, this so called hero was such a coward because he did nothing about that.. So, in conclusion, this book was totally messed up in it's writing.. It could have been so much better but it was a major letdown..
Generally I like Stoker’s books and was looking forward to this new series. This, for me, was not a good start for it.
I thought there was a lot repetition. Vincent and Remi met while on vacation (taken separately) on a diving trip and bonded when the captain of the boat left them in the ocean. The attraction was immediate. Several times as the story progressed Vincent tells her they have to slow down and make sure she knows what she is getting into being with a SEAL. In the beginning the ex boyfriend threatens Remi and she trips the alarm. The ex does it again towards the end of the book snd she calls Vincent first instead of tripping the alarm. Both Remi and Vincent had ex’s that were borderline stalkers yet after their vacation to Hawaii until the end they dropped out of the story. The whole book just seemed like it was thrown together and logic went out the door.
I’m normally a fan of Susan Stoker’s series, however this one was just awful. I didn’t even finish it and there have been books that I’ve had to force myself to finish in hopes that it would get better. This did not.
The overuse of the term “Douchecanoe” throughout the book was too much and cringey. I had to go back to the beginning at one point to remember the ex’s actual name.
As usual with her books lately, the story and plot are good, but the other details ruin it for me ... Talking about cartoons that a 35 year old knows about and constantly calling her ex by the annoying nick name. I miss the earlier books where the characters and nicknames weren't so awful. Still looking forward to wren's story though.
It may be a crazy meet-cute but it is perfect for Kevlar and Remi, well maybe not ideal, but it sums up their lives perfectly! They both have crazy ex's and enemies but neither have any idea who could actually want them dead. They are two of the sweetest people (yes I know Kevlar is a warrior and can kill with his bare hands, but with Remi he is sweet and gentle) who collect friends and supporters everywhere they go....but the reasons only have to make sense to the maniac wanting them dead....and no-one is going to make sense of their crazy ranting and twisted thinking. I did guess fairly quickly who was behind the attempt on their lives, but had no idea just how far they would go as they unravelled, happy to take out innocents as "collateral" too. All I can say is thank goodness for Remi being the person she is and breaking through Blink's walls, thank god that Blink is the man he is and still listens to his gut...no matter the cost to him. He is a true hero and I cannot wait for his book, but next up is Safe and the teaser we get at the end of this book.
I loved Remi and her quirkiness and Kevlar’s protectiveness of her. This was a really easy read and kept my attention. The bad guy was pretty obvious, but I still enjoyed it. A little spicy.
Protecting Remi is the start to a new SEAL of Protection series by Susan and features Kevlar aka Vincent and Remi❣️
Vincent and Remi find themselves both single, on a vacation in Hawaii and then stranded in the ocean with no boat😳 Suffice to say a bond is quickly forged between them which is intense. I will say this is early in the book and I figured out who the “bad guy” was…I just didn’t know the why🤷♀️
I really enjoyed this group of SEALS and some cameos from other favourite SEALS and their wives. The lead in to the next story has me excited to read it❤️
I don't know why I have trouble liking Susan Stoker. This is the 5th book I have read by her and I have only liked one of them. Everyone else seems to like her so I keep trying.
There is too much repetition in this book. Vincent keeps saying he will be gone a lot on missions. Douchecanoe was repeated over and over. Come on, just say the guy's name. As stated by one reviewer, I had to go back to the beginning to even figure out what his name was. I also got tired of the 'snort laugh' stuff. Frankly, who cares how Remi laughs. Just say she laughed.
Vincent and Remi went on and on about their exes. But once they were back in California, there was one action by each of the exes, then they did nothing from then on. Though Vincent and Remi kept talking about them.
I figured out who the bad guy was fairly early in the book. It was a no brainer. Just think about who Vincent had a lot of problems with.
There was really no action until Remi was kidnapped. That lasted just a few pages toward the end. I don't like the outcome of what happened to the bad guy. He got off too easy. There should have been a confrontation between him and Vincent. As it was, someone else saved Remi, not Vincent.
I will try another book by the author. I just hope it is better.
Romance trope: miltary Series: SEAL of Protection: Alliance Length: 368 pages
Plot: Both Kevlar and Remi have recently gone through breakups and have found themselves in Hawaii, taking solo vacations that were originally meant for couples. But they are counting themselves lucky when they meet, even if it is in bad circumstances. They manage to escape a dangerous situation and vow to continue seeing each other when they get home. There is at least one person out there, though, who doesn't want them together for reasons of his own, so the danger isn't over for either of them.
Commentary: Standard book by this author. Chance meeting between the main characters. Quick to fall in love. Heroine who is plain/ordinary (although the author has gotten better and the hero here at least thinks that the heroine is beautiful, whereas that didn't happen in the earlier books). Bad guy who is unhinged for no discernible reason. I'm starting to think that every military installation around the world has a secret cache of caricature villains. All of the conflict was external, which sometimes is just what you need. Both characters were relatively well-adjusted, despite their recent breakups. Nice diversion for an hour or so.
The she is not like other girls is the only theme consistent throughout the book. Giving 1 extra star just for Blink. It was so annoying even if I did luke the storyline.
1. oh she's curvy, she is not like other girls 2. oh she is not going shopping, she is not like other girls 3. oh she is not wanting to go to a fancy restaurant, she is not like other girls 4. oh she didn't take an hour to get ready, she is not like other girls 5. oh she is so free during sex, she is not like other girls: dude is literally comparing her with all other girls during sex? I'm like????
man susan stoker needs to grow up her writing to so not be 2010 cliche cringe and give a little more depth to her characters
I was really hoping to like this book. I am a huge fan of romantic suspense, especially if it includes a SEAL, and I keep hearing about Susan Stoker, so I had high expectations for this book. The story line was fine, although I’m not a huge fan of insta-love, but I struggled with the character development. I appreciated that the book seems to have been well-edited, but I just couldn’t connect with the characters, and the writing itself seemed amateurish. This was the first book I read by Susan Stoker, and I’m not sure I’ll read another.
Meh. It’s well written, but too soft and sweet all around for my taste. The drama at the beginning of the book when they meet wasn’t all that dramatic and it had a horribly disappointing ending. Spoiler alert: the hero doesn’t even save her! Someone else does. He realizes she’s missing, has no leads to follow, then meets her at the police station when it’s all over and another guy has both rescued her and taken down the bad guy. SMH. I get that that’s how things sometimes go in reality, but I’m not reading Navy Seal romance novels for reality!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I liked Remi and Vincent. I like the premise of the story. I liked seeing the familiar characters from the previous series.
The villain was a one dimensional cartoon. I did not like spending time in his head - it was gross. Pretty sad that the first sex scene in the book was from the POV of an asshole, and was disgusting and abusive. Sadly the “love” scene between the protagonists was also problematic with a bit of a consent issue in the middle. Not cool!
A quick read that has few surprises. I did like that the bad guy was not the usual suspect and he was really bad. I appreciate when the heroine is in real peril. Other than that everyone was shiny white teeth perfect. And talk about insta-insta-love...
Protecting Remi is the first ( #1) book in Susan Stoker’s new ALLIANCE series featuring Navy SEALS.
REMI Stephenson is an introverted, nerdy, self doubting but creative woman. Happiest when she’s at alone at home working on her cartoons, Remi never has luck in relationships, in fact she ends up going to Hawaii on holiday alone after breaking up with her selfish douchebag ex.
Vincent ‘Kevlar’ Hill has just been dumped by his demanding ex, she doesn’t appreciate him putting his work first. Deciding that he’s still going on the holiday that his ex planned but HE paid for, Kevlar also finds himself in Hawaii.
The pair find themselves marooned in the middle of the ocean after their dive boat vanishes and they have to work together to save themselves, yet despite the precarious situation, Kevlar and Remi can’t help but be intrigued with each other. Kevlar is impressed with Remi’s calm bravery in such an extreme circumstance and Remi is blown away by the good looking, muscular and brave Navy SEAL and whilst neither were looking to rush into a new relationship there’s no denying the spark.
Though they know that whoever wanted them left in the ocean is still out there, they decide to tentatively move their relationship forward whilst searching for the truth. Was one of their exes to blame or is someone else out to cause them harm?

This book is a nice start to Ms Stoker’s new Navy SEAL series. It introduces us to a new SEAL team so it looks like there’ll be lots more books in this series. I quite liked this book, it was an easy quick read and an interesting concept. My only issue was that the relationship went from 0-100 in a heartbeat very near to the beginning of the book. I understand that there’s a lot to cram in in a particular amount of pages but the speed of their connection felt a bit unbelievable. I liked that Ms Stoker is back to writing about SEAL’s. It’s a subject she always writes well. I liked as well that it wasn’t the main male character that was prominent in her rescue, it made a nice change. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series. 🔅Navy SEALS 🔅New series 🔅A- hole exes 🔅Redemption 🔅Unusual meet cute 🔅Protective Hero 🔅Independent Heroine 🔅Familiar cameos
Susan Stoker has created another story readers can get lost in!
Protecting Remi, book one of Susan Stoker's latest series, SEAL of Protection: Alliance, offers another escape into the world of hunky alpha heroes and women who are NOT damsels in distress. As a former "dependent" wife of a soldier, Susan Stoker understands the dynamics of love and relationships amongst active military. It takes a special person to love our active duty personnel, especially those involved in special operations. She demonstrates that that personal insight in every book she writes. Protecting Remi is a perfect example of Susan Stoker's talent.
It is easy to get lost in the world that Susan Stoker creates in Protecting Remi. Her two main characters, Remi and Vincent, may seem like unlikely soulmates. However, with Susan Stoker's incredible talent for character development, the two characters become real and believable enough to be your neighbors! Even the original meeting of Remi and Vincent, while inconceivable and coincidental, becomes believable (and cute) in Susan's talented hands.
Remi and Vincent's immediate attraction and budding romance had me sighing through my tears like watching a Hallmark card commercial. Their chemistry was off the charts! From beginning to the end, I was completely captivated by these two. Again, lost in their story, the world of broken washing machines, dust balls as big as small dogs, and other demands on my time faded away.
The suspense in this novel is riveting. Susan Stoker's plot, with as many twists and turns as a roller coaster, kept me guessing about who the bad guy was. The shocking reveal was totally unexpected and a testament to Susan's clever imagination!
Susan Stoker's descriptions of the work and research that goes into missions with special operations are spot on. Her mission scenes are the only ones I can share with my retired special ops husband that doesn't end in him critiquing how unrealistic they are. Her plots are a reflection of her empathy and recognition of our military special forces' way of thinking.
Protecting Remi is a great start to a new series involving Navy SEALs and the women who love them.
I loved this military romance, it had exciting adventure, palpable danger, unexpected twists, and red-hot romance. This heart warming story includes two strong, intense, and passionate main characters who are real, relatable people who have flaws and make mistakes, but are really just trying to just do their best being messy humans. I have a soft spot for the people who are a bit uncomfortable in their skin because they don’t feel like they fit in, like Remi. So I love when they finally see their truth and they get swoon worthy HEAs. And oh boy did Vincent ever love Remi with his whole being. Phew. My romantic nerdy heart was crushing on him. Remi is a nerdy cartoon artist and also the heir to a multi million dollar family fortune. When she breaks up with her boyfriend before a planned trip to Hawaii, she goes on the trip by herself. Vincent is a Navy SEAL team leader and when he breaks up with his girlfriend before his planned trip to Hawaii, he also goes on the trip by himself. Remi and Vincent meet on a private diving excursion and get close when the boat captain strands them in the middle of the ocean. To get to their HEA they’ll just need to deal with unexpected danger along with their overwhelming fast feelings. Remi and Vincent’s love story has a little bit of everything - sweet moments, fan your face spice, dangerous heart stopping action, painful pasts, strong friendships, swoons, and laughs. Expect to feel all the things - fear, love, anger, redemption, tears, joy, and so much all encompassing, nurturing, protective love. Susan Stoker is a master at balancing a story of romance, danger, and personal growth. And while most of us will never be in the dangerous situations the main characters are a part of, the author nevertheless makes who they are as people so relatable and real that it is easy to fall in love with them. I cannot wait to hear what happens next for the men in Seal of Protection: Alliance series.
