Telling the story of the champion woman jockey, a biography documents Julie Krone's struggles as a high-school dropout, her battle to prove herself in a man's sport, her devastating injuries, and her will to survive and win. 30,000 first printing.
What a gem! This wasn’t the most beautifully written book and sometimes the timeline hopped around and confused me, but I feel like I just sat at a coffee shop with Julie Krone for a day and heard her life story in her voice. I’ve heard of her for years. In 2006 when I worked at Churchill Downs people still talked about her. Now I see why. She’s scrappy, funny, determined, and honest. I’m so glad I got to know her through her memoir.
Small-town girl makes it big in the world of Horse Racing. Athlete extraordinaire Julie Krone shares the true life of making it as a Jockey through the hardships of going it alone as she moves away from to clean stables and walk horses. She earns her way to the saddle for a thrilling ride!
Great story of a rider's life. Julie admits to all her mistakes and strengths. She is a determined rider who just wanted to ride horses. While she spent most of her riding life in New Jersey at the Meadowlands and Monmouth Racetracks she is best known as the first female to win the Belmont Stakes. Thi sbiography is her story of coming back from injuries sustained on the track. With her fighting spirit I am sure we will hear from her again.
I have seen Julie Krone race at Saratoga. This book gives great insight into the life of jockeys. and in particular, female jockeys/ I really enjoyed it.
