I’ve read Blood Samples by Xine Fury, which didn’t disappoint, and for the most part I was highly engaged with the short stories in Geek Cutes.
My favorite stories in Geek Cutes are the simpler ones such as “Dungeon Therapy” and “Gilded Cage.” By simpler I mean that they’re more grounded stories – less violent and not in the science-fiction realm – with budding, touching romances between the characters. Romance is a common occurrence in all these stories, and Xine Fury presents these relationships in authentic and heartwarming ways.
I also liked the story “Hero Worship,” which brings to life a futuristic world where superheroes have 9-to-5 jobs and go out on dates at clubs like many in society. Another good one was “Strangers in the Void,” a suspenseful story that takes place on a space station where the power goes out.
Throughout the book, Xine Fury touches on cultural issues of the day with both a light touch and in a heavy-handed manner. In the story “Think Tank,” which features a fictional president character based on Donald Trump, a voice comes down from on high and brands with an X the folks who don’t have the same views as all-knowing progressives, telling people how to think and ordering them to change their ways. Individuals in a country that once, I assume, had free thought, were now being condemned and commanded to think in ways that align with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Yikes.
I understand that the tension between hate-mongering white people who can’t stand gay and trans people makes for intense, eye-opening fiction. But stimulating conflicts can also happen among the moderate among us, which actually sums up most people. Most folks don’t care who’s gay or black or trans; in fact, they probably barely even notice these fine people as they make their way in the world. Xine Fury has an outstanding imagination and is a great fictional author. I’d like to see this writer step out of her or his or their bubble and create a story through the eyes of a sympathetic fifty-year-old heterosexual white male who is rich and oversexed beyond his wildest dreams. I’m confident Xine Fury could aptly write about such a character, and I’d be willing to buy the book.
