Thousands of years ago a prophecy was written. It told of a day when vampires and humans would fight their final battle. It said the humans would lose and vampires would become the dominant species on Earth. It said nothing could stop this from happening. They called it the Endtime.
Tom Ford is returning home to face his destiny. He is the one spoken of in various arcane texts as the chosen one. Humanity’s best hope to halt the vampire uprising. His mother has trained him for the fight that is to come, but there are forces at work she could not prepare him for.
Fate has drawn everyone back to the North Coast. The stakes have never been higher. An ancient secret may hold the key to mankind’s salvation. An ancient evil may be their undoing.
A small group of humans led by Agent Nicholl have been working to prevent the Endtime from ever coming to pass. In the days ahead she will marshal allies both old and new to fight for mankind’s survival. Together they will make their final stand.
Endtime is finally coming and the forces of good are banding together with a dangerous plan to finally defeat the vampires, but if they lose, the vampires will take control of the world.
Rek and Amanda go on a mission to Japan to find a way to obtain the amulet that Chloe sold by whatever means necessary. With both being seen as rogue agents, the will need to use all their cunning to get this vital piece of equipment. Rek's past mistakes are going to come back to haunt him in the worst way he could imagine, putting everyone at risk, especially his own family. Chloe is feeling somewhat useless compared to everyone else so she helps the Daves with their unique contribution to the plans.
Tom returns to meet his destiny from the prophecy with Claire fearing that she might now lose her son to the vampires. Sarah is finding out more about her past that leaves her feeling horrified while Hal fears losing his one love to Tom, leading him into making bad decisions. Anna once again has to face her worst nightmare when she is on the receiving end of Rek's costly decision. Lynda no longer has her powers but she cannot turn her back on the battle with other people she loves in danger.
Kaaliz has freed himself from his underground grave and has murder on his mind, determined to avenge his lost love and kill Amanda for doing it. His secret hideout still contains the results of his experiments and he plans to unleash his own brand of Hell. The Master has also come to the party, creating new vampires and eager to play his part in the prophecy...a prophecy that nobody is really sure how to influence.
This book certainly ramps up the action with a James Bond style chase scene at the start. I love the character of Amanda but I really could smack her idiot boyfriend. Not content with lying about killing Kaaliz, he is constantly putting his own desire for revenge on him ahead of the greater good. He should be working with the others to stop all the vampires instead of a selfish agenda. This was Christian's downfall and I wondered if Rek was going to follow in his footsteps. I did enjoy the fight scenes in the book, the monsters and seeing things come to a conclusion.
The humour in the book was good, despite the dark story. I like to see the right mix of horror and humour and there is no doubt that the author uses it to good effect here. I love the two Daves. They've gone from Dumb and Dumber to vital parts of the resistance and I really enjoyed their bigger contribution here. I also loved Deirdre the Vampire Slayer who we meet during this book for the first time. I don't think she's going to be replacing Buffy any time soon, to be fair!
My one issue was Kaaliz. He was such a massive threat, what with the evil hand on his heart story, but he is reduced to a lesser role in this book by the introduction of the Master. He seemed to be aimlessly going in circles waiting for Rek to come and find him while trying to work out how to release his monsters into the battle. I was a bit disappointed in how his story came to an end-like a bit of a damp squib really. I did however like the clever twist of plot on the last page. That left me with a bit of a smile.
Overall I enjoyed the trilogy and it did come to a pretty good conclusion. If you're looking for a series where the vampires are just plain evil, but also want a fairly quick read, then you may well enjoy these books.
