I don’t believe I am the target audience for this book as it was very simplistic in presenting concepts I am familiar with. I believe it’s a great bridge between high school and college, where the art of critical thinking is cultivated and people begin (hopefully) learning to discern information actively instead of passively.
That said, the focus on internal bias, humility and self reflection is one that can never be repeated often enough. In our currently charged political world, recognizing and dealing with internal bias is so incredibly hard, yet necessary. I took away from this book that this is an area I personally, as well as we as a society, need to continuously improve upon within ourselves.

I found this book to be crucial. Nowadays, critical thinking is our number one shield from all the fake news and wrong information we consume on various platforms. To be able to make educated decisions with clarity, overcoming any bias and misinformation is a super power. This book is a really good source of information to help readers with techniques and hacks navigate those situations not only in their professional space but also in their personal life.
I think it was in chapter 8 that the author assesses the importance of data and how to find the most fitting solution.
I think this would be a really good Christmas gift to any reader who likes to be an active member in society.
“The 4 Pillars of Critical Thinking” is a really useful, deep and complete guidebook written by Patrik Meyer. In this installment, the author introduces readers to many concepts and ideas related to critical thinking and the importance of knowing what it is and how we can apply it in our daily lives and activities. I found the book very interesting, full of helpful and stimulating definitions which are expressed in a simple and clear way making it easy for the audience to follow and understand. I think it is a must read for anyone who wants to be better and grow in their personal lives, jobs and mental health. Highly recommend it!
This book really covers so many bases on thinking critically, to bring us back to baseline in today’s technology driven world. I think everyone should read this book because most of us are so reliant on technology, that we don’t even realize our inability to think critically. Patrik Meyer gives us a lot of tips on observing, analyzing, and interpreting different pieces of information to arrive at well-reasoned and unbiased conclusions. By taking Patrik’s advice, I realized how many confirmation bias’s I actually have. Definitely looking forward to putting more of the information to good use in the real world.
This book is full of so much interesting information about thinking and the process of thinking, but it reads like a research paper or a study, so, for me anyway, I needed to be in the right mindset to read it. It's written in a very dense and dry way, which isn't a bad thing, but I found I was able to focus more if I read it in a distraction free environment with a cup of tea or coffee. I plan on reading it again, because there was a lot that I'm sure I missed. Lots of great info about biases, steps to take when making decisions, observation and analysis, exercises and applications for daily life, and much more.
I must not be the target audience for this type of book because I was already well aware of everything here. Like there was a whole chapter on sources and the difference between primary and secondary sources as if this was not drilled into me in high school and even more so in college. I definitely do not struggle with critical thinking. In fact, I probably think too much and that is why I’m so anxious all the time. Regardless of that though, I know several people who need to read something like this, however, they are not the kind of people who read or care about whether their initial belief may be wrong so again we are at a standstill.
“The 4 Pillars of Critical Thinking” by Patrik Meyer offers techniques to improve your work and personal life. This is achieved by mastering mental skills. These mental skills will help enormously. It includes effective decision making, better analytical skills, better communication, self-confidence and enhancing clarity. I found this book to be very helpful as I struggled a lot to take decisions. It was my biggest weakness. And that’s because I had no confidence in myself. This book managed to give me the tools I needed to see clearly and change my problem areas in a simple way. I won’t lie, it’s not easy nor magical. But it is definitely doable.
