“The city keeps dropping people into the past, big cats are prowling Toxteth, and riding the Albert Dock carousel is now considered a dangerous sport. If things don’t calm down soon, I’m going to start banging undead heads together.”
Lilith O’Reilly would find eternity far more peaceful if people would just, well, leave her in peace. Instead, she’s been declared (reluctant) queen of all she surveys, the spirit of the city is going through an existential crisis, and Time itself has gone rogue and decided the laws of physics are for losers. Oh, and her cat’s getting weirder by the day (which is saying something).
Can Lilith figure out how to put things right without making other things go wrong? Do immortal kings ever make good boyfriend material? Is it possible to survive a bombing raid when you haven’t even been born yet? And does anyone really understand quantum?
The fourth book in the bestselling Netherweird Chronicles series, CITY OF GHOSTS is a fast and funny urban fantasy about what really gives a city its soul.

Praise for The Netherweird
“Does for Liverpool what Ben Aaronovitch does for London.”
“Phenomenal…the author captures and evokes the weight of historical zeitgeist and as we scousers would say... blends it.”
“The main character is believable and well rounded, the writing is brilliant and the world building genuinely believable […] the best urban fantasy book I have read in years”
“Great world-building, engaging characters and a fast, twisty plot”
“Not a single dull character among them…even the cat is cool.”
I adore these books, she is so inventive each has great twists, fascinating characters. I always end up looking bits of history up that are touched on. I adore Liverpool as does the main character which makes me love them even more. I am going to start all over again, oh and do the Liver building tour ❤️
More weirdness, more history, a little mythology, a happy ending for some and sparkles of what is to come for others. I enjoyed every second of this book, my only complaint is that it is too short. The story is well told and fully complete within the covers - no frustrating cliff hangers but it leaves me wanting to read the next installment immediately and alas that's not to be. On a side note, I appreciated the nod to Black Books and feel a binge coming on.
I recommend you read this book and enjoy the mix of real history and mythology which wraps up an engaging, entertaining and delightful story
How do each of these books keep getting better and better?! This author is on my auto buy favourite list and I love the fact that British authors are now writing high quality urban fantasy and compete and even beat some of the big American names where the genre reigns supreme. These books deserve to make it big and be read by as many people as possible. Lil is beginning to come into her own and although not quite a year dead yet she is beginning to accept who she is and where her place might come to be. There were some wonderfully heart warming scenes with her family which I loved and another thing I just have to do whilst reading this is google the places and the historical references, with which these books are so full. The author's meticulous attention to detail and obvious love of history shines through and makes me want to know more in the best way. I raced through this book far too fast and loved every second of it. The only downside? The book hangover of feeling nothing else can compete. Can't wait for more.
I enjoy this series for the very likeable protagonist, but mainly for the setting. The city has changed a lot from the one I once knew well, but only in detail, not in essence. I learned a number of historical facts from this episode ... glad to see the Docker's Umbrella make an appearance, but there should have been horse trams on Castle Street. The ongoing story possibly suffers from too many characters, and not enough explanations as to who they really all are ... I have worked some out, but not all. Oh, and yes, I do have a Dukla Prague away shirt. Doesn't fit me any more, mind.
I do love Lil. She's becoming more and more like Nanny Ogg in every book. I'm not mad about it. As someone who grew up in Liverpool but left a while ago, it's fun reading about it and understanding the attitudes and realities of the city. It is a place where I could completely believe this esoteric weirdness happens on the daily.
I didn't enjoy this one as much as the others but a great short read all the same. The history of Liverpool is a wonderful addition and I won't see the city the same when I next visit. I would recommend this series to anyone who loves history, fantasy and fun, and I am looking forward to the new book in May.
I can't take my hands of this series! I have ordered book 5 now to carry it on. The mix of comedy, wittiness, darkness, suspense, vampires, werecats, ghosts and the undead just make it my ideal book. Liliths journey in this weird and wonderful world has been nothing but funny, cool and interesting and I can't wait to see where it goes.
