Open Road #1

Broken Sparrow

Rate this book
A chance encounter. An unlikely hero.

Morris has always dedicated himself to his brothers in the MC, choosing the freedom of the open road over the monotony of family life. But a chance encounter with a single mother on the run causes his protective alpha instincts to kick into overdrive.

Alice Sparrow thought she had planned her escape perfectly, but everything that could go wrong, did. Bank account emptied. Broken-down car. No place to stay. But when she bumps into a handsome biker, she doesn’t have the luxury of walking away from his help, especially when she must keep her daughter safe.

What is supposed to be a simple act of kindness quickly turns into something bigger and more complicated than either expects…especially when it comes to matters of the heart.

Broken Sparrow is a steamy age-gap, single mother, hot biker standalone romance that's guaranteed to bring the steam and the feels.

Alice has been planning her escape from her controlling husband for a while now. When she has saved enough money and the opportunity to get away presents itself she packs up her daughter and hits the road in an old car she is hoping will get her far enough away from the man she never wants to see again.

Morris is making a pit stop at a gas station when he sees Alice. He can sense she is a bit skitterish and he notices she has some bruises, that worries him. When she has trouble with payment at the counter, Morris steps up with a RAK so she can get what she needs and be on her way. He can tell she is keen to get back on the road.

As Morris prepares to leave the forecourt he decides to check on Alice, he wants to make sure she is okay. That’s when he sees she has a cute little daughter in the car with her too. He does what any decent guy would do, gives her some cash to make sure she has a full tank and his phone number in case she has any further trouble.

I should tell you a bit more about Morris… He is very tall, broad shouldered, has a long beard, is covered in tattoos and rides a motorbike. On first impressions, you might do a double take and make assumptions about him - perhaps be a bit wary of him. Alice definitely feels that way about him at first. However, when things go completely wrong for her and Zoey, she makes the call that will change everything for them.

Morris did not expect to hear from Alice after she drove away but he is on instant alert when he receives the call. His instinct to protect this petite, fiercely brave and beautiful woman is at full force. They are in danger and he needs to see with his own eyes that they are okay.

Alice is not used to being around a man who is genuinely interested in her well being. She soon discovers that Morris is so much more than his appearance. He is kind, thoughtful, generous and patient. Alice and Zoey are experiencing freedom without fear - for now anyway. The more time they spend with Morris, the more Alice can see how being with someone like him could make her happier than she has ever been.

There is huge chemistry and a strong connection between Morris and Alice. She has him rethinking his entire future and it now includes Alice and Zoey. However, danger is knocking on their door putting everyone on edge and Morris is determined to rid them all of that fear once and for all.

‘My sweet little bird. Funny, sexy, broken little bird. But, no. She’s not broken. She’s just learning to fly again.’

This was a spur of the moment indulgent read for me. Low in angst, easy to read and of course the compulsory HEA to keep me satisfied :)

Obviously, we all know at least one reason everyone should #oneclick immediately >> Jesus Christ on a cracker ➡ #coverWINNING

But also >> age-gap / single parent >> #mybookcrack

So, I looked at this cover and said ”of course I’m reading that”without knowing anything else and then the book crack happened and *happy sigh*

I am happy to report that even tho Morris is introduced into the world before this book, this story is not connected to any previous story. A true standalone! Miracle! Not only is it a true standalone, but it also begins to build a kickass world with kickass characters I hope to see in a series in the future! *hint hint*

K, but I digress …

I enjoyed this story because it was entertaining and sexy and even tho it was an at first sight romance, it did not read insta at all. Their chemistry went beyond the sexual and balanced out nicely all the #feels running thru the story. It’s a really good story written by one of the few authors I trust instantly with my reading time! You can trust her also, promise :)

4 Alice and Morris Stars

(Read and listened on audio - fabulous narration by Jason Clarke and Samantha Brentmoor).

This was a deliciously hot, insta lust/love , alpha hero saves the day , quick read and I really enjoyed it.

Alice (28/29) is fleeing her abusive husband, Jerry. If Domestic Abuse is a trigger for you, be aware that it is a major theme in this book and it is both on and off the page. She has planned to leave for a while so after a great deal of preparation she escapes his controlling clutches with her little girl, Zoey (6). Jerry is not Zoey's dad and has always been resentful of her.

Alice is having issues at a petrol station and Morris (45) , a gorgeous, hot biker, comes to her rescue. They part ways but he has put his number in her phone so if she needs help she can call him. Alice and Zoey run into more difficulties and she turns to him.
Morris is having a day of it - he has purchased new premises for his MC Club to develop and in the process of exploring them discovers a young guy, Leo . Their initial meeting does not go well but they both recognise that the other is a good person and they forge a friendship of sorts. I loved the rapport between these two men and am looking forward to reading about Leo in the next book, Broken Dove.

What I loved about this book was how likeable all the characters (except the abusive ass husband) were. Zoey is a cute little girl. Morris as the Hero ticks ALL the boxes and the age gap between him and Alice didn't bother me at all. The dialogue is really entertaining and I am definitely going to read this series.

The pace is fast and the 'insta' was out in force -literally , they meet in the morning , he rescues her twice and by that evening they are having sex and deciding that they have found the one.

Sometimes I don't like insta love but I am nothing if not a flighty reader and in this case I loved it.

I needed a hot alpha Hero and I got one.

So why not five stars?
In the beginning Morris is breaking up over the phone with a woman called Jessica and he makes references to her often through the story. I couldn't work out if they had actually been physically intimate with each other but they definitely had an emotional attachment but she found someone else. As for Alice , yes , she is married but I didn't consider her to be cheating. Her husband had been so awful to her and theirs was not a normal marriage and there was no love between them.

Secondly, when the inevitable drama had happened , all is resolved and then they talk about Zoey starting at her new school. On the first day of school , it is not Alice who takes her. She allows their new friend Lia take her to school and she stays behind and has sex with Morris. They do then go and do the errands that they have to do / sort out , but I just thought that felt a bit odd. It didn't really fit with what I would expect her character to do.

Finally , I think it felt quite rushed overall. There were several themes that could have been explored much more BUT , this is the first book and I suspect it was setting a lot of things for the next one. Reading this book was like being given a delicious pudding but not being allowed seconds....I wanted more.

I will definitely read Morris and Alice's story again.

HEA? More HFN but still lovely and left me smiling.
Cheating? Alice is married when she connects with Morris but in all honesty, her marriage was long over.
My musical muse ....
Lose My Number (James Blunt) for Alice and her asshole ex.
What Lovers Do (Maroon 5) for Alice and Morris.

This is one of those moments when I can honestly say: I stayed for the plot — not the man, not the spicy scenes, no. The. Plot

What to expect:
∘ Drama
∘ Motorcycle club
∘ Alpha Male - Biker
∘ "On the run" type of situation
∘ Single mom with the sweetest girl
Tropes:
∘ Insta-love
∘ Age-gap (28 x 45)
∘ Single Parent
Trigger Warnings: domestic abuse, violence, attempted murder

Plot
A woman on the run from her abusive and controlling husband, who's manipulated her and made her life a hell since the moment he put a ring on her finger.
A biker who's living his life to the fullest.
A random meeting that puts her in his path and the attraction between them is instant.

Characters
Alice
A strong woman who's ready to sacrifice anything and everything for her daughter. After realizing how toxic her marriage is and seeing the true face of her husband, she started making plans to run from home with her daughter. I liked her character, a strong, brave and lovely woman, whose only flaw is being too trustful.
Morris
A hot biker who has a soft heart, respects women and doesn't tolerate abuse of any kind (bonus points for him).

Romance
The INSTA-LOVE I detest. This book was fast-paced and things happened way too fast for my liking.

Conclusion
A little disappointed with that ending. Everything was rushed and when the inevitable drama happened, all was resolved too quickly.

Ok.. so this was a strong intro to this series.. My main focus however was Morris.. he's just.. 🥵🥵 delicious and incredibly sweet..

I was invested in these all too familiar, realistic, heartbreaking circumstances that our heroine, Alice, is in with her adorable 6 yr old daughter Zoey.. So I found myself really proud of Alice and very much in-like with her for majority of this story.. but IDK, by the time this one ended, I just really felt like she was just an alright character.. She's just missing that thing that makes her truly a formidable heroine.. so that's why this one got 4 stars and not 5 from me... But I was VERY proud of her in chapter 24.. This chapter will have you feeling all kinds of things.

Also, her husband Jerry... what a freaking jerk of joke.. by the end he didn't really seem as frightening or dangerous to me, the way Alice, and certain circumstances shaped him out to be.. By the end he was really just a spineless jerk of a gnat.. An annoyance, not a true threat.. so that felt kinda.. lacking for me.. Yeah.

Other than that this was a good read. I would recommend it.. I'm not really interested in book 2, though this book sets up that premise nicely.. I may come back for book 3 later though.. Since these can be read as stand-alones..

Truthfully this story had me at MC Romance. Eek. My ALL TIME FAV. When you add single mom on the run, alpha VP, then a sweet young man, a hippy girl with a gaggle of puppies, all I could do was keep on reading.

Morris and Alice connect from the beginning. Holy hotness it is so good. Yikes I was on the edge of my seat at times when a certain POS was chasing Alice. Hee hee don’t worry, it turns out alright. Wink. Good thing there where softer interactions between an adorable 8 year old and the rest of the crew which decrease my heart palpitations but still give me many “awe” moments.

I loved every second of this book and I devoured it in one afternoon. I literally couldn’t put it down. If your obsession is MC like mine, I dare you to not want to inhale this book too. Wink.

Happy Reading Everyone! XOXO

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Broken Sparrow is the first book in the brand new Open Road Series. It is by a new to me author I wanted to try out for sometime now and when I saw this book was available for review  I signed up for the tour and besides I mood for  a good MC romance. Also, the cover played a pivotal role in my choice to read and review Broken Sparrow.

A good time was had with this quick and charming story. It may not have blown me away, but it provided the perfect escape when I needed it most.  Broken Sparrow is a combination of motorcycle and age gap romance. The hero (Morris) at 45 years is seventeen years older than the heroine (Alice).

Alice and her six-year-old daughter are on the run from her abusive ex-husband. During her getaway, she had a chance encounter with a tattooed, sexy biker at a gas station. He provided her with some financial help, which she reluctantly accepted and gave her his number in the event she needed further help. With no plans to use the number, she went along with her plan of escape. But when her car broke down on the highway, calling Morris was her only recourse.

Broken Sparrow reeked of insta love, which is not necessarily a bad thing. However, in this situation, I found it unrealistic given the circumstances. The heroine makes poor choices in men, while the hero wasn’t the settling down type. So for them to suddenly fall in love within a couple of days didn’t resonate with me. Aside from this, however, the story had aspects which I enjoyed. The biggest highlight for me was Alice’s ex getting what he rightly deserved. I loved Morris’s character, such a sweet soul. Calm when the situation calls for it, but fierce in protecting  those he holds dear.

Overall, Broken Sparrow delivered a charming story, perfect for readers looking for a quick read and a temporary escape from reality. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading

According to Amazon this is a 300 page book but honestly if I hadn't of looked I would have sworn it was no more than 100. It read really fast and insta-lovey and in this case that wasn't a great thing for me. I did enjoy the story and I liked the characters but their connection didn't feel super believable to me and I kept looking for more.

OH MY GAWD......my heart is so happy to finallyyyyy have this story!! I have been curious about Morris since we met him in the Heatwave series and oh my did this book have me devouring page after page of this amazing story!!

"My sweet little bird. Funny, sexy, broken little bird. But, no. She’s not broken. She’s just learning to fly again."

This book had it all.......Age gap ✔️, Single mom with the most adorable little girl✔️, Sexy as sin, alpha biker ✔️, Steam, steam, steam ✔️ and all the feels!! Morris and Alice meet at a time when she needs a miracle and that miracle is Morris.

I fell head over heels in love with this story!!! Morris is such a protective, swoon-worthy alpha and his determination to help Alice and her sweet daughter Zoey was heartwarming. I wasn't expecting such a beautiful story about trust, second chances and learning to love again but this read surprised me at every turn.

68% of this book takes place the FIRST DAY they meet.
86% of this book is the first TWO DAYS of them knowing each other.

The FIRST NIGHT less than 24 hours after knowing this man, she gets dicked down by mmc while her daughter has a sleepover downstairs with someone she met like 6(if that) hours prior?????

Make it make sense please. She is supposed to be fleeing an abusive marriage and trusts her daughter alone with strangers???
I finished the book but the only reason I didn’t DNF it is because I had to see how much absurd shit the author could pack into 2 days

5 star Review Broken Sparrow (Men of Inked: Heatwave #8) by Chelle Bliss

AUDIO REVIEW:

From the moment we were first introduced to Morris early in the Men of Inked: Heatwave series, he intrigued me. Now he is getting his own story and I couldn’t wait to dive in and I couldn’t wait to see what Chelle Bliss had in store for him. This story has it all, age gap romance, a hot alpha biker, a single mom with an adorable little girl as well as passion and heat.

I knew that the woman who would bring him to his knees would be special and Alice Sparrow and her daughter Zoey are. My heart broke for everything that Alice has been through and her need to run from an abusive husband.

Jason Clarke and Samantha Brentmoor brought Morris and Alice to life for me. Samantha particularly expressed all the emotions of a haunted woman, scared and running. Jason Clarke is always easy to listen too. Their narration was spot on for these characters and engaging.

From the moment that he sets eyes on Alice, he sees a woman who is in trouble, haunted and terrified. I loved how all in Morris was and how determined he was to protect Alice and Zoey.

I fell hard and fast for Morris, such a swoon worthy, caring, protective and passionate man. Who knew under his gruff and hardened exterior beat the heart of a warrior? When they first met there was an instant connection and sparks flew but it was the care and compassion he showed to both Alice and Zoey that really melted my heart.

This book is all about second chances, love and finding happiness when you least expect it. family. One click this little gem, you won’t be disappointed. I highly recommend it.

Morris has been a frequent side character in the Men of Inked: Heatwave series, and I was eager to read his story and discover more about the woman that brings him to his knees.
Morris is the VP of a motorcycle club, and although he’s protective, loyal, thoughtful, and patient, this alpha is also a bit of an enigma. He’s tall, tattooed, and gruff looking, but he not what you’d expect and has the biggest heart.
Alice is resilient, strong, and brave, fleeing a life of abuse, she’s a single mother of an adorable six-year-old daughter.
The chemistry and connection between this pair is intense, and undeniable, the love sense are hot and steamy.
The secondary characters piqued my interest and I hope that we might see them in future titles.

Yaaaaas! Ms. Bliss I love you. MC has became my favorite genre and I can’t get enough. When I found out she was writing Morris I was excited and she did not disappoint. If you’ve read her previous books you know who he is. Just reading the first chapter or two I felt like I was there in the book experiencing it. I felt the anxiety Alice was feeling and it broke my heart. NOBODY should EVER have to experience that. I don’t want to give too much away so just read it. And I hope there is more to come with the disciples!! I’m here for it!! ARC provided by the author.

This was a quick read. Why do authors insist on "insta-love" plots? For me, insta-love stories drive me freaking nuts. Morris is the VP of an MC club. Single, never had a relationship, does not want one or any kids. Doing the MC club thing. Alice is running with her daughter from her husband who is evidently a piece of crap. These two have a chance encounter at a gas station and BOOM. In Love. Literally, after a few hours Morris declares his love and wants to make her his old lady. In a few hours this single living manwhore who never wants to be tied down is now head over heels for some random lady he met in a gas station. Why? Morris is helping Alice hide from her ex. Alice is literally a scared, intimidated, meek, terrified woman who is on the lam and runs into a big, tatted up motorcycle guy, decides she should take her daughter, go to this guy's house and then have sex with him? Is she a broken, scared woman or is she a ballsy, fly by the seat of her pants kinda girl who gives it up to strangers within hours of knowing them? I wish we would have had more story development. Give the characters time to know each other. Let them find out the person's last name for pete's sakes. These insta love stories are so far out there that unfortunately it turns me off.

There was a lot crammed into a short read and the story didn't connect with me. You may love those type of stories where there's an instant connection and all things MC. If so, this story is probably just right for you.

This review actually hurts my heart to give, like honestly...I have been a huge Bliss fan for years and hate to leave such a gifted, talented author a low review. I have been trying to decide what to say and basically, it boils down to a great idea that needed more pages added to the book in order to tell it believably. With more time/pages a natural healthy relationship could have formed between Alice and Morris and a believable approach to dealing with her husband could have been built and executed. As it stands, within the first 50% (a matter of hours have passed in the book world) Alice has not only left her abusive husband, with her 6-year-old daughter but she's taken to the roads in a junker with a plan that only got her 5-6 hrs from her abusive husband and then it's just free for all from that point. On top of that, she is having to control her urges to be intimate with a man she's just met, knowing her abusive husband is literally sitting outside the house she's hiding in? What actual woman/mother, who was abused for 2 years, is even thinking about sex with some stranger, while their child's life is in danger? How do you mentally go from, my freaking husband, who I ran away from 4 hrs ago, is outside and texting to...uh I like his shoulders and I'm getting wet...NO ONE! What man helps a woman and her daughter who are obviously scared, bruised, and running from a man, and within hours of meeting her is already rubbing on her, kissing her, and calling her baby? That's just too weird and either means the husband was never truly a threat to Alice and Zoey, so what was the purpose of leaving the way she did, OR Alice and Morris have zero problem-solving skills and might need mental health help. And this is only 50% of the way in...I can suspend belief about a lot of things, but a mother who is spending any time thinking about a new man while she is on the run with her kid...I just can't even respect her a little...so I stopped caring or believing in Alice, and Morris by default because he didn't stop all that crap in its tracks and treat her like a woman on the run who needed help and not complications. There are books that ask you to "suspend some belief because it's romantic" and then there are books that are just blindingly unrealistic and you can't stay in the book world because it's that far out there, this one, for me, is the last.

I will obviously keep reading Bliss because I have loved all her other books, but this was just a no for me...

Alice believed that she had thought through any contingencies that could derail the plan she had for her and her daughter Zoey to escape her husband. It all starts to fall apart at a gas station when a tattooed biker comes to her aid, but she never intended that she would need the number he gave her.

Morris was drawn to Alice from their first meeting, but he could also see that there was a lot more going on with her than he knows. When she calls needing his help he doesn’t hesitate to go to her side, and he is determined to prove that he is man that she and her daughter needs not only in the present and the future but to also protect her from her past.

After everything that Alice has been through her strength and resilience shines through as she tries to build a new life for herself while Morris was patient and understanding as he allowed her to realize she wasn’t running away from something but to him.

This was good, shrug, not great. The cover is what pulled me in to be honest. I loved the H, Morris and 6yr. old Zoey. The h was just ok for me. I felt bad for her and the things life had thrown at her but there was just, idk something missing with her for me. The husband is a total jerk. The ending was kinda anticlimactic. This is the first time I've read this author. So there were some secondary characters who I'm sure were from other books that fans of this author would recognize. However that didn't take away from the story in any way. This is the first in a new series so I may check out the next book. I do love a good MC book😀. I would recommend this book and will try this author again

What an incredible read. Once you start you cannot put it down. Alice has not had the most luck with her relationships. Zoey’s dad is not in the picture and her husband is someone she is trying to get away from. As a result of these men, she does not trust easily. She has done all that she could to take care of her daughter. Now on the run she encounters Morris. He offers to help her until she can get back on her feet. When Morris first meets Alice, he feels a connection with her. It is something that he hasn’t felt for anyone in a long time. Their story grabbed me from the first word and never let go. What a trip to their happily ever after. Chelle Bliss once again gives her readers everything they expect and more. Secondary characters such as Lia, Leo, Tiny, Fingers and of course Zoey add to this amazing and phenomenal story. Another incredible read by an amazing author.

This MC romance had me absolutely swooning the entire time. Morris is the VP of a motorcycle club and he’s just perfection.

Alice is a single mom who has been fucking through it. I loved her from the very beginning and i’m just SO glad she was able to get her happy ending because she deserved it. She’s strong and so caring. Her and Morris just clicked instantly and it felt like they had already known each other forever the day they met.

Morris treats her SO fucking well and makes sure she understands she’s now his top priority. I wish we got a little more of them, but this was such a good and quick read!

Wow!! This author does it again with the suspense, drama and steam! Alice is on the run and hiding with her cute daughter Zoey. She then meets Morris while hiding out and he definitely wasn’t in the plans. I absolutely adore how Morris is protective of her Alice and Zoey. I thoroughly enjoyed the quick pace, nailbiting suspense and overall storyline of this book.

Incredible read. I am beyond estatic that Morris has gotten his story.

As a Chelle Bliss reader I am so happy to read more about this Disciple. Welcome back to the compound. This is a Standalone, but I would recommend reading Chelle's other series, because there is a lot of crossover.

Meet Morris, the VP of a MC. Meet Alice and Zoey. Alice is on the run from her abusive husband. In a gas station she bumps into a massive, tatooed biker. And the rest is history. Morris is truly a knight in shining armour. Enjoy their amazing story. Morris is the man every woman wants as a protector. Lust, love, loyalty, and action is all in this book. Enjoy.

Sometimes we just need that instalove easy read to top off our romantic hearts. The story of Morris and Alice is just that. While there is a bit of conflict it isn’t  too harsh but the way Morris swoops in with his alpha self is definitely swoon worthy. It’s a bit crazy how fast they get together but when it’s right it’s right. There were a few moments where the perfect words were said and they were so true. Life just comes so when it’s good we have to remember to grab hold.
Overall great book and I loved meeting these characters!

I loved how at its core, Broken Sparrow is a story about trust. Chelle Bliss combines 2 very likeable characters with a domestic abuse plotline and sprinkles in a fun cast of supporting characters which gives us a feel good read with a bit of grit. It did not disappoint and was a page turner that I enjoyed in 2 days.

The story begins with Morris running into Alice at a gas station. He can quickly tell that all is not right with her and on instinct gives her his number in case she ever needs anything. He leaves her there to check out a property his club just bought sight unseen and is in for a surprise upon arrival. Meanwhile, Alice is on the run from her abusive husband with her daughter. When her beater car breaks down, she has no one else to call for help except the stranger from the gas station. Morris, feeling strangely responsible for her, comes to help and our story takes off from here.

Chelle did an amazing job creating characters that are likeable and complex. Alice is broken but also strong. She refuses to give up even when she’s hit rock bottom. Morris is gruff, but also kind and caring. Even though he’s never felt like settling down he is drawn to Alice. Even though this is a quick read with a bit of an insta-love plotline, I enjoy Broken Sparrow immensely. I liked how the basic story was not overly complicated but external events kept the story moving along. Grab this new MC read and curl up for an afternoon.
