After a long, deadly nuclear winter, spring has finally come to Flagstaff, but food reserves are critical. Dozens die of malnutrition every day. If more food can’t be grown, the city won’t survive another year.
Fortunately, help is on the way. The remnants of the U.S. Army in Mexico have promised Flagstaff security, but there’s a the Army needs food, too. Lots of it.
Jenn is already starving. Her friends and family are starving. Desperate to save them, she joins a mission to find seed and farmland in Phoenix. With the window for planting almost closed, every day is crucial, but the desert isn’t empty. Little does she know, her world is about to get a whole lot bigger—and more dangerous.
A Second Beginning is the sixth book in David Lucin's Desolation series.
I was born and raised in the mountains of British Columbia, Canada. After earning a master's degree in military history and spending a good chunk of my twenties studying the British Army in the First World War, I returned to BC and began writing fiction. Nowadays, I'm a husband, a pet owner, and the commissioner of my fantasy baseball league (though sadly not the champion). After struggling through the winter Flagstaff is waiting on a delayed spring, while contemplating the necessity to simply produce more food. With deaths running in the thirties per week and everyone on starvation rations the news that a part of the Army is heading their way is a mixed blessing. While the added firepower might boost security it will prove difficult to feed the extra mouths...
Before the army arrives some important decisions must be taken.
Not the best stepping-on point! The regular team are in fine fettle - and there is a surprise arrival of a figure from the past that upsets the relationship Jenn has with some of the closest to her.
A satisfactory point to pause - there is some closure (as the title suggests) but also the promise of a new set of problems... Go read it!
A really great read! A good continuation of the story so far! A strong willed female character struggles not only with family issues but inter fighting amongst the home defending forces! Twists & turns, ups & down, never a dull moment! Great action & pace, always an exciting read! I do recommend all of this series!
