When your witchy family has lived on Monster Island for generations there’s certain standards to uphold.
Too bad my only claim to magic is being able to heal people through baking. A power my ex-fiancé Brad never fails to give me grief over. After he cheated and left me, I buried myself in pastries. It was better to be alone than to trust my heart to anyone else.
But when Drake, my secret crush, a tall, brooding gargoyle hot enough to stop me in my tracks, comes in for my famous banana bread, I offer to whip him up a batch quickly.
Betrayed by bread, it backfires and creates a temporary matebond between the two of us. Now we have a month of being stuck together—every time we’re more than ten feet away we pass out.
It should have been too claustrophobic having a seven-foot stoic gargoyle following my every step, but Drake is easy going, considerate, and too hot for the tiny kitchen. But my temporary mate is carrying scars from his past and getting him to open up is harder than tempering chocolate in a heat wave.
As the month continues, it’s harder to remember the “temporary” part of the matebond. My quiet life alone now seems lonely, and I can’t forget the feel of Drake’s massive wings wrapped around me.
When Brad resurfaces, demanding I help him or he’ll sabotage my floundering efforts, his threats could blow up everything I’m trying to rebuild.
Because when the month is over, I don’t think I’m going to be able to sever this temporary matebond.
Gargoyle Gripe is a sweet monster romcom about a love forged in cookie dough and bad reality TV shows.
Monster Mate Mayhem is a series of eight standalone monster romances, each featuring a different monster and their journey to find love amidst the chaos of their lives.
A sweet and sexy romance, featuring a lonely baker, and an equally lonely gargoyle. An accidental matebond brings them together, amidst the warm scents of magical baking!
This was a quirky romance, with a cinnamon roll hero and a heroine in need of a boost of confidence. Working together heals them both, and makes for a sweet story that I thoroughly enjoyed. This was a fairly quick read, and sweet monster romance lovers will enjoy this tale.
A sweet and spicy monster romance for lovers of gargoyles, baking and crafts! I couldn't put this down and spent a spring afternoon reading this heartwarming love story! Highly Recommend!
this was… not very good. Frankly, the reason i even finished this book was because it was really short and i was curious as to how they were going to resolve the matebond thing. But apart from that, the writing was not engaging whatsoever, imo.
Speaking of the writing, it felt very unfinished and unpolished. And i’m not just talking about the typos. The writing style felt choppy and inconsistent; some paragraphs would be very brief and unexplained, while others were unnecessarily flowery, almost to the point of hindering the reader’s understanding of the scene.
The dialogue also felt not very thought out and cringy. I know that cringe is very subjective, but people in real life don’t make poetic metaphors while confronting their stalker, and it really took me out every time something like that happened.
i really wanted this to be good, i love monster romances, but this really did not hit anywhere close to the mark for me. i don’t think there is anything necessarily /wrong/ with this book, so much as it just needing heavy editing.
I loved the story of Drake and Evie finding love through banana bread no doubt.
The story was excellent, unfortunately I felt I had to take 1 star away due to several misspelled, missing, or even incomplete words that would stop my reading enjoyment. I would suggest an edit with another proofread to make it truly 5-star worthy. The story and contribution to the Monster Island universe was quite good.
Everyone should have a gargoyle partner, this is super sweet and a little healing if you have found family. It’s short and has plenty of smut but the story in the background is so sweet and a call home for the misfits.
The spice be spicing, it’s like a ginger snap sweet and spicy. Fun short read that I would recommend to lovers of monster romance.
This book made my soul so happy. I admit I did have times where I just wanted to talk some since into both of the main characters, but I couldn't have imagined a better ending. (Well, unless you wanna add a prolog featuring a wedding and/or a baby, which I would buy in a heartbeat)
This book has everything I love 😩✋️ (Alexa, play "Melting" by Kali Uchis)
✅️ Witch X Gargoyle ✅️ Dual POV ✅️ Forced proximity ✅ Size difference ✅️ Fluffy domestic romance ✅️ Spice ✅️ Baking ✅️ Main characters being perfectly written and meant to be together
*sigh* as a single soul after reading this, I need my own Drake 😭💘 but really if all it took was praying for the person to heal and be happy into a banana bread, then both of you take a bite each and then *boom* you both find yourselves not being able to stay away from each other. *melts*❤️ Now I'm craving some banana bread, and hoping it has all the love baked into it 🍞💛
Also, some of my favorite exchanges between the lovely couple, Evie and Drake:
Chapter 3 (How can anyone not swoon over this 😩) :
“You heal the entire neighborhood—and more—every day. Do not discount the small kindnesses, because sometimes they matter more than one big gesture.”
I took a deep breath in and sighed. “Thank you. That means a lot.” “I do not know you that well.” His voice was quiet and rumbly. “But your heart is big enough to heal through your baking. If they are too short sighted to see that, then that’s on them.”
Chapter 7 (I want whatever they have *melting emoji*) :
"You don’t have to do this alone. I am here and I will not let him hurt you.” I looked up into his face, already so precious to me, and nodded. “Having you here, even if for a short while, has made all the difference.”
**** (Same chapter, and this was where the spice started 🔥)
“Evie, darling, whatever you want is yours.” “I want you.”
*** (Hope I haven't spoiled much, but this scene 😳)
He buried his face between my legs and I bucked up. I froze, waiting for him to push me away. “Sorry; I’m sorry,” I panted. “I didn’t mean to smother you.” Drake gave my inner thigh a small nip. “I want you to smother me. I want to die between your legs.” “Ohmygod,” I panted. “I mean it’s rude to buck up while you’re…uhhh being selfless and going down on me.” Drake paused, his face still shiny from my wetness. “Evie, I don’t know who said that but it’s not rude. You buck and grind all you want. If I didn’t love this position, I’d make you sit on my face.”
Chapter 14 (Beautiful):
"Scars remind us of where we've been, not dictate where we're going," Drake said, his voice a low rumble. "Perhaps we're both learning to heal in ways we never expected,"...
*** (Same chapter, and this one is just Drake, John Donne who?):
“I will love on you until the dawn takes me. And then, when the light of day is fading, I want you to awaken me with the thrusting of your hips.”
Chapter 15 (I'm just melted goo at this point):
“Your Gran’s cookbook is everything to you."... “You are everything to me.”
*** (Same chapter, I need to be their marriage officiant 🤧):
"I've lived in the shadows, haunted by flames and failure. But you...you are the hearth's warm glow, the promise of a home not bound by stone or solitude." "Your heart, your strength, they have become my sanctuary," he continued, taloned hands enveloping mine with surprising gentleness. "I love you, Evie. More than I thought possible. Will you be my mate?" ... "Yes.”
Epilogue (A perfect conclusion ❤️):
"Imagine," I whispered, breaking the companionable silence, "if all it took was a single bite to know you're not alone in this world." "Then let's bake enough to feed an army of lonely hearts," Drake said, his voice tender and resolute.
(Yeah, hand one over. I'm a lonely heart 🙃)

Anybody who knows me, knows I'm absolutely besotted with gargoyle's and this sweet, cozy but steamy romance really hit all my buttons. Having had this sit in my TBR for a while I wanted a cute story to lift my spirits and it certainly delivered. Its a fun read with an engaging storyline and although I've never read this author before, I'll definitely be looking out for more books by her. It's perfect for when you just want to cuddle up on the sofa and lose yourself in the magic of a heartwarming story and let the world pass you by.
Evie isn't your typical witch better at baking than potions, her magic seeps into her pastries to heal the people who eat them. It's a power that she's looked down on for, and one her ex fiancé never failed to scoff at, and when he left Evie decided her heart was safer by being alone. That is until Drake, a handsome but brooding gargoyle who carries his own scars comes by for her famous banana bread. Whipping up a batch just for him, Evie is mortified to discover that the healing spell that she added has backfired, instead creating a temporary mate bond between the two. Now for a month they have to stay together as the magic won't allow them to be further than ten feet apart, otherwise they will pass out. But as she gets to know the gentle gargoyle, she sees there is more to him than she realised and her walls start to crumble. And as the month nears it's end, she finds that breaking the temporary bond is possibly the last thing she wants to do.
I absolutely adored both the lead characters in this story as they were not only relatable but likeable from the start. Watching Evie and Drake both struggle with not only their painful pasts, but the growing feelings towards each other really melted my heart. Each had a reason to want to be alone, but both brought out the best in each other. Drake's gargoyle clan were hilarious, as well as being the kindest souls you could meet, not only looking out for Drake but making sure Evie was included too. And watch out for Evie's double douche of an ex Brad, I swear if you are anything like me you are gonna want to punch him!
So if you love gargoyles as much as I do or are just in the mood for a sweet romantic tale, this is for you. Totally recommend 😁
✨Drake moved to Monster Island after an incident that left him broken and scarred. Struggling to move forward while haunted by his past, he found solace in visiting a small bakery run by a cute little witch.
Evie, an unconventional witch, doesn't fit the mold the other witches in her coven expect. Instead of brewing potions, she heals with her baked goods. One day, she invites Drake to her kitchen to bake his favorite treat, unknowingly triggering a mate bond between them. Now, they have one month to figure out if this bond is real or if they’ll be forced to break it in the end.
📚 Tropes: Monster Romance, Fated Mates, Urban Fantasy
✨I loved the storyline—it's sweet and unique. If you’re a fan of the '90s Gargoyles animated series, this book is definitely for you! The chemistry between the two main characters was fantastic, and I was pleasantly surprised by how he helped bring this timid little witch out of her shell.
The main issue I had with the book was the grammar. It felt rushed, as if it might’ve been a debut release. At one point, I got really frustrated because certain elements kept repeating. However, I managed to push through and ended up enjoying the story and the spice enough to finish it.
I really liked the baking content, and the fact that Evie could heal through baking and affect so many people in her community. Drake was a big brooding cinnamon roll type hero and was both quietly and vocally supportive of Evie. The "villain" was almost comically obvious, but my main gripe is the numerous typos and other copy editing errors, which increased toward the end of the book. Not sure if this was done on a quick deadline or what, but the correctly-spelled-but-wrong-word-choices, dropped "s" and "d" at the end of a word (ex. misse_) and plain old missing/wrong words took me out of the story every time.
So I did like the story but I found a lot of the dialog to lean toward the corny side. Whenever they started to talk about feelings it read like one of those really cliché Halmark movies everyone makes fun of because the exclamations of feeling are just a little too much and a little too flowery to be realistic. They're like soliloquy instead of believable speech.
I also think the story could have benefited by more character development especially in the secondary characters and more time and challenge spent building and fighting the obstacles to overcome.
It's a good story but I feel like it could be so much more.
I have been loving this little series of books and while this one was no different, there were a lot of errors throughout. Once you get past the errors and typos, this was such a cute book, which is why I continued to read it through. Evie and Drake may have had an accidental matebond but they were perfect for each other. There were some details about witches that were different from other books that I read but that didn't change my opinion. Oddly enough the one question I had about gargoyles and spicy time was answered, which was a relief, that would have bugged me until the end of time.
Baker Evie is struggling to keep her bakery running till Drake arrives
Evie has healing magic in her baking and wishes to heal Drake's heart and wings. The chemistry backfired and they end up mated and can't be too far apart literally. There's the possibility the bond will fade after a month. Her old fiance Brad pops by to harass Evie and Drake soon sets him straight by claiming Evie. Brad tampers with the bakery and lands in jail with all Evie's customers ready to testify against him. Lovely heart warming story! Had me in tears and then laughing.
Baking bonds Some people bake with love, Evie bakes with magic. She accidentally bakes a mating bond into a loaf of banana bread for her favourite customer, a gargoyle who she has a crush on. Now they have to stay within 10 feet of each other for a month. Drake is scarred, sweet and a little broody. The "villain" was so obvious it annoyed me that Evie didn't see it immediately but her and Drake were so cute together.
This was such a sweet story. Characters were wonderful and the over premise was delightful. The love scenes were a perfect balance or tart and spicy. I would have enjoyed more deep dive into each Characters story especially the main and their supporting characters but good story and I hope it becomes a series because I would love to the other gargoyle and witch clans stories.
A sweet small-town romance between a gargoyle and a baker. I enjoyed the delicious baked goods being a part of the plot to intimately, and the over all plot. I thought the antagonist a bit too obvious and the story a little predictable, but it was sweet and parts were very, very spicy. Honestly, the spicey made this a 4-star read for me!
One well intentioned magical baking accident leads to a cute kind of one bed situation… where the one bed is actually being forced to stay within ten feet of each other for the month. It was cute and adorable and I stand a supportive monster and people healing each other through understanding, baked goods and a whole lotta spice. ☺️
A cozy, heartwarming story of two heartbroken souls learning to love again; one of the better written “standalone book in a paranormal romance series” stories. I found Evie and Drake to be an adorable couple written in a more mature and wholesome light, there’s definitely some spice though!
Evie is a witch who owns a bakery, and she accidently creates a matebond with Drake a gargoyle with guilt issues. They have to stay close because of the bond for thirty days. Feelings grow between the two, and there is a bit of drama with an ex-boyfriend. Really good story.
Well we all know accidental does not necessarily mean it was a bad thing. And they both needed a push to get out of their own ways. Did anyone else think it strange that the witches council was that oblivious to what was going on around the bakery? One would think a few would really appreciate baked goods.
Two lonely souls. One with outer scars. One with scars unseen. Together, they find a way to see each other through hearts afraid to trust. With friends and clan to help, along with trials that help open their eyes to possibilities, these two might be able to find their way to each other.
This is the most adorable, sweet grumpy sunshine you can imagine! Both main characters have baggage and pain in their past and they heal each other so perfectly with love.
This heart-warming and laugh-out-loud story of a baker and protector was just the perfect balm that I didn’t know I needed. I absolutely recommend reading this perfect romance between Eve and Drake!
I absolutely loved this story! Evie and Drake are fantastic together. I love how their relationship grew stronger and stronger with each passing day. This story gave me all the feels, and is exactly what I look for in a romance. Read this book!
Find each other and become accidentally mate bonded. As they learn to support each other, and deal with their Heart aches, they grow closer together and each wonders if the other feels the same way. Bonding, steam, and a happy ending.
Very nice read and loved the people in this book. Full of love and adventure unfolding in every page and heart touching to.can’t wait until the next book from this author.
Oh monster island this series is everything. Evie and her amazing bakery dang I want more about the bakery. Drake is a 7ft tall hottie mchotface gargoyle and they have an unexpected mate bond situation which neither are ready for. All kinds of sweet and uplifting
So obviously I'm a fan of monster romance. Reality sucks so why would you want to read about it? I want to read about monsters who fall in love, who change the course of their life and who are the best among Us.
Such a cute book. Our FL is a kitchen witch who bakes her spells. She has the hots for a gargoyle (who likes her back). When a well-intentioned spell goes awry, she finds herself mated to the big teddy bear. I loved the combination of witch + gargoyle and the ML was so sweet.
