Using Garrett's ability to inhabit his minions to follow a city-wide battle from many perspectives in real time was clever. It is Garrett's ruthless but caring nature that draws me in. It speaks to me.
This is more or less an audiobook review for the first 3 books of this series. I forgot to review them individually, because I found myself bingeing the whole series last week. I thoroughly enjoyed this series, even though the first book started out really slow and I didn’t like the MC initially, in the later books he grew on me. He is severely physically handicapped, but his mind is very sharp. The first book was more or less him exploring his unconventional powers and leveraging them to get a higher position in a gang.
As for the second book, he finally becomes a gang boss and the author also expands on the MC’s powerset, the magic system and the wider world. I was slightly annoyed that we only got to see the main city but I figured that that was the extent of this book’s world building. The side characters were also more likeable and the stakes got higher with some necromancy shenanigans.
In the third book there is a full blown necromancer war going on, and the the MC finally beings to step in to a more ruler-like powerset and less of a bystander powerset. I found myself slightly annoyed with the MC’s lack of tangible offense in a physical confrontation, but the author chose the ‘hidden-boss’ route for the MC’s build. There was a lot of action in this book.
Overall I’d give it a 4.4/5. A really good series that I literally couldn’t put down. I’m just glad that parts of book 4 are already posted on royalroad. The narrative performance by Michael Kramer was also superb.

I decided to lower my rating to 3 stars on this book because I feel that the foundations (=my memories) of what happens in this book show strong weaknesses in the actions that took place in the previous books.
The rise of a new "Ruler" seemed to be conditional on the existence of a territory. My understanding being that the inn IS Garreth's inital territory, any intrusion into it invariably triggered a war... right? I think Seth Ring is trying to justify the existence of the throne as a territory only after its extension into the realm of dreams.
Also, the speed with which he gains experience VS that of the other Rules is questionable (but forgotten for the sake of the story). If every time one of them wins against another Ruler grants them a new power, their opponents will inevitably have many advantages over him.
Still, I enjoyed reading the book as a whole, even if Seth Ring starts to do the same thing a lot of the time in Garreth's behavior, as if he always had plans within plans. Watch out too for the ease with which, even though the flowers are powerful, he manages to get allies. The 4th book begins with these problems too, but as it doesn't always go down the easy/obvious path, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the sequel.
Major flaw in my eyes is that around 60% of the book is dedicated to 1 single large scale battle against underdeveloped agonists and protagonists. Number of times during this battle we switch to POV of characters we do not really know to see their part in the skirmish while the priority target is relegated to the back burner.
MC's main selling point is his inelegances and preparations while in this book by the characters own admission luck was the main determining factor and that is not very engaging.
A Guardian Most of the characters we got to know in previous books are relegated to the background with some of them getting a token skirmish related mission while new characters become the spear and the shield in the strategy.
Number of times MC seems to forget the already established information about Antagonist and skeletal hand, etc. I doubt this book had an editor.
I like the concept but I think it might be time for me to get off this ride because having glimpsed some of the authors other works I highly doubt the next book will proceed in a way that would be satisfying to me.
So i read this authors books because i enjoy his world building, storytelling and characters and this series has been no exception, however in this book the constant errors in the names of people and places became far worse then in the previous to the point where Garrett was spelled 2 different ways and he was even called John at one point and he is the main chararcter so imagine how everyone else faired along with the continued issue of having characters that are in one place also being in another at exactly the same time. Even with all that i wouldn't have dropped this book as many stars as i have but the major thing that almost ruined this whole book for me was the fact that the author forgot the ending of the previous book for this one. The entire end chapter of book 2 was completely forgotten and never referenced again in this one even though it would have been a very impactful event for the story that unfolded in this book. I honestly couldn't believe it when i realised what was happening and it inpacted my enjoyment of this book immensely.
6.5/10 I love this story and the characters and that will keep me reading even though this book had some serious problems.
I really do love this series, its my favorite of the author's works. This is a fine installment in the series. Plenty of suspense and tension, along with some nice twists. The next book looks to be a doozy.
I would have given 5 stars except that the editing was a little shoddy in this book. There were issues with punctuation and some of the wording seemed out of order. There were also a few instances where plural/singular was mixed up or a character being mentioned that was in another place at the time.
I noticed some of the same issues in other recent releases from the author, so I'm disheartened to see that it seems to be an ongoing issue.
3.5 stars (rounded down) I keep hoping for something unexpected to happen, but that seems to never be the case with Seth Ring. I do think this series is a bit better compared to the Titan and Tower series where nothing no matter how powerful has a chance of stopping the MC.
Having some semi-important characters die and the main characters struggle makes this series more interesting IMO.
The world building is starting to expand more which is the best part of Titan/Tower. How far will it go...
Also does the dream world touch other places, maybe even the MCs original home on Earth?
I like the plot. I like the MC growing. I like the struggles. However, the style of prose makes the story feel like a description of the story and MC’s experience rather than an immersive tale. The word “causing” or “caused” is used way too often when describing the consequences of whatever random action is taken. It takes away from the experience.
That being said, it is not so bad that I won’t continue the series. I just feel it could be so much better if the author were to take some steps to create this kind of reading experience.
I was reading this series on Royalroad. I stopped on chapter 44 so had to pick up there and finish this book. Don't recall what the reason was for why I fell so far behind. Probably it was just due to wanting to build up some chapters and then losing track of it with all the other things I have to read.
This is a very good story with what I think is probably one of the most unique worlds I've run across in some time.
I'm now going to read the next book and try to get caught up.
Probably the best of the series so far, this book has more plot and storyline, less on the litrpg side of things. But still a very enjoyable book as the author continues to build an incredibly immersive world.
Copy editing was worse in this book, however, especially with character names. The protagonist was (incorrectly) referred to by three separate names in this book: Garrett (correct), Garrick and, believe it or not, John in one spot. That really threw me and definitely broke the immersion. Still, overall a great read.
This book was action packed and a lot easier to follow than the previous one. The last 50 pages pushed it up from a mid 3 to a 4 star. While it was pretty obvious who the person Garrett was asked to sneak into the city was going to be, I like the direction the story is taking especially as Seth looks to close out some of his many series. The only things that bugged me about this book was the repetitiveness of situations and combat scenes and some pretty bad editing issues (calling Garrett by the wrong name.)
The progression in both leveling and character growth is great as always and I'm looking forward to what happens with this new character that's been introduced! I'm hoping for no romance, at least with this character in particular, but we'll see. If it does happen maybe I'll like it. Garrett is one of my favorite main characters so whatever he does I'm sure I'll be engaged!
Reading this book has me wondering.... Did the author get inspiration for this series from playing Plants VS Zombies? It really feels like that is the case, and throw in some Cthulhu-esque beings for added flavour.
I thought more would have happened in this book (like the protag being able to walk again),but U did enjoy what was there.
I enjoyed the great character development in this book. They advance with the story and increase the anticipation of what they will become. Lots of great action, a fast paced story and a major war where it is hard to tell friends from enemies! Good reading!
I will be honest, I didn’t think I would like this series very much after reading the description. But I kept finding myself returning and truly enjoyed the character development and story line. Excited to read the 4th in the series.
Pretty standard power fantasy with Isekai elements, but the main character is quite compelling. I look forward to the next book, which I intend to start right away.
This is a fine fantasy adventure novel. It is well written and edited. I especially like the vampire and mirror demoness. I anxiously await the sequel.
