In the distant past, a time of magic and swordplay, there lived Harold, the mightiest lich of all, a master of arcane sciences, and a challenger of gods. After reaching the pinnacle of his power and finding it surprisingly bland, Harold waged a cataclysmic war against the gods, aiming to shatter the very system that confined him.

He took a nap, but he is awake once more.

Upon discovering that the new gods have been using some of his phylacteries as batteries to sustain themselves and grow more powerful, Harold has decided to take back what is his. He won't be alone. Accompanied by his faithful butler and maid Alex and a limpet that just won't leave no matter how often he teleports her over the nearest lake, Harold journeys north and east.

The Flaming Steppes await. An untamed land where great mantises roam and where a few fiery sects have made their homes, cultivating and growing in one of the harshest environments in the Divine Kingdom.

They are not prepared for Harold and his companions.

This is second in a series and doesn't even get its own title. Read in order.

This one changes some things, structurally. There are many more non-Harold PoV chapters and one of them wore on me a ton. Rem is a mantis girl and she's all senseless aggression and denial. I found her aggravating every time she was on stage and that magnifies by a thousand when it's her PoV. I have no idea why Alex would want to train her to be a butler when she has no desire, no aptitude, and no hands (mantis people just have scythes for forearms).

The story itself is still fun. And training Limpet by putting her in charge of the invading undead army was an interesting wrinkle. I feel like the pace was good, even with the PoV shifts dragging the story out. Plus I loved some of the groups encountered. The good-natured, semi-woke bro sect was a hoot, for example.

I'm going to call this 4½ stars that I'm rounding up because I'm still all-in for the story. Harold's casual apathy balanced by his deep curiosity is a great story tension and him stepping back on the action so Limpet can learn added some actual dramatic tension for the action; and not least because you suspect he'd let her fail fatally if circumstances rose to that level. We know he can resurrect the dead (in addition to raising undead) but we're never really sure if he'd bother. So the tension isn't neutered by his presence like it might otherwise have been.

A note about Chaste: There's zero prurient content and no scope for shenanigans. So this is pretty chaste.

Just as good as the first one. There was a chapter I particularly enjoyed how the author wrote it. It was quite unique! The undead jokes continued adding the humor I enjoy.

Dead Tired 2 (Dead Tired #2) by Ravensdagger is a darkly comic and thrilling continuation of the series, blending supernatural elements with a biting sense of humor. While it builds on the strengths of its predecessor, it also introduces some new challenges that may leave readers divided.

Elder Lich is quite badass : r/overlord

The story picks up where the first book left off, following our protagonist, a sleep-deprived necromancer, as he navigates a world filled with undead creatures and supernatural threats. The plot is fast-paced and engaging, with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers hooked. However, compared to its contemporaries, such as Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files or Kevin Hearne’s The Iron Druid Chronicles, Dead Tired 2 sometimes lacks the same level of depth and world-building.

Why do guys find maid outfits sexy (200 - ) - Forums - MyAnimeList.net
"Ravensdagger's knack for blending humor and horror shines through, but the world-building sometimes feels underdeveloped compared to other urban fantasy series."

One of the standout elements of Dead Tired 2 is its humor. Ravensdagger’s writing is sharp and witty, often providing laugh-out-loud moments even amidst the darkest scenes. This balance of humor and horror is reminiscent of Christopher Moore’s A Dirty Job, though Ravensdagger’s work leans more heavily into the supernatural and less into the absurd.

Character development in Dead Tired 2 is solid, with the protagonist showing more growth and depth than in the first book. However, some of the supporting characters remain relatively flat and underexplored, which can detract from the overall narrative. In comparison, series like Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files and Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London offer a richer tapestry of characters, each with their own distinct arcs and personalities.

Despite its shortcomings, Dead Tired 2 remains an enjoyable and entertaining read. Ravensdagger’s ability to balance humor and horror sets it apart from many other urban fantasy novels, even if it doesn’t quite reach the same heights in terms of world-building and character depth as its contemporaries.

A great continuation of book one.

All the things that were fun and entertaining from book one are continued with this one. This is an easy recommendation.

Decent

I like this author's work, in fact I look forward to every stray cat strut instalment eagerly. This series is a little different. Not bad though the humour can get a tad grating in places like when they explained the union ranks.

Book 2 of the series is fine, but failed to keep my interest and fell a bit flat after book 1. Weird direction for the story, no stakes- which is kinda obvious with an overpowered main character, but I feel could've been handled better.

Where is this going?

I have to wonder where this story is going. There is a general path, though the storytelling seems more focused on enjoying the journey. And I’m enjoying the journey with bad puns and other wordplay.

Will the future focus be on The Limpet? On Harold (the herald)? Or even the other characters? They all seem to have a part in the story, and I could imagine growth paths for any of them.

5 Dumbkill Stars

Dead Tired II is the second book of the series by Ravensdagger.

As always, I find myself saddened to meet a stopping point within a newly discovered and very much enjoyed fictional world. Especially when I would much rather continue to explore the authors creation and the multifaceted characters residing within. Stumbling upon new fascinating beings such as the likes of Mem and Cinder are at the core of my true enjoyment for reading so often.

Mem comes across as a different design in what intelligence can mean. Most assume she is dumb, but it's more as if she views the world far differently than evenly those born to the same species as her. Similar to how I think one might represent autism in an alien species, if a little clumsy. I can already imagine the way in which she will turn this story on its head and shatter expectations.

It's been intriguing to witness as Harold and Fenfang's relationship continues to shift, even as he regards it in similar constraints. Alex, Death Maid extraordinaire, has a deeper understanding of the budding dynamics between the two and further developing within the growing main group.

I am excited to encounter more new and old gods. Defeat and befriend varying sects. Discover phylacterys hidden and stolen.

However, I mostly sir with anticipation for how long Rem shall take to realize the new emotions building within her, hidden behind annoyance and the known hunger of her species, for one annoying and ever helpful Death Maid.

Still pretty slow paced, but in my opinion better than the first book. With the introduction of additional characters, which get enough exposure and development on their own, it is quite a nice change.
I'm a bit concerned about a part at the end, though, where the narrative switches rapidly to the perspective of multiple people shortly before they are killed by the next narrator. Might be a foreshadowing at killed main characters in the future.

The pun continues ohohoh!

I enjoy the pun and word play between different characters happening throughout the book. It's also interesting seeing a Lich in power with his experiments growing. The interaction between the new necromancer and "the limpet" explaining rank structure within the union was highly entertaining. Lastly the big battle scene shifting from perspective to perspective as different troops died in combat was unique for me and very entertaining. To be put into a soldier's shoes in their last few minutes of life before expiring. A little slower paced than the first book, but still a fun read.

My only big gripe is the underwater section (mostly because of my job) light does not travel or work well underwater and it is explained inside buildings but not while traveling. The deeper you get the darker it gets without a light source. Especially with troops coming out of the water at night, it would be pitch black under the water. Secondarily pressure increases substantially the deeper you travel in. Even if there had been a quick nod to how this would have been treated would have solved this gripe for me. I'm really nitpicking on a fantasy book, but it did get a few things correct. I like how it tackled the contour of ocean depths with continuous travel of troops, as the ocean floor is not a very flat or even surface to travel upon. You can't forget though that after a certain distance the Continental shelf of any ocean is basically a sheer dropoff to get to the next level of seafloor. Maybe if it had been mentioned how deep I'm necrometer/kilometers they had traveled under I could have developed a better picture in my head.

TLDR; Definitely would recommend even if I nitpick the finer details of underwater travel.

What in the necromantic name of calcium deficiency did I just read??

Dead Tired II somehow bones up the madness from book one while still tickling the funny bone and rattling around in the coffin of my heart. The limpet’s identity spiral? Utterly spine-tingling. It’s like watching an alien skeleton slowly try to assemble itself without the right manual — haunting, hilarious, and oddly heartfelt.

The interspecies emotional miscommunication due to a total lack of the right words? A grave mistake in real life, but here? Comedy buried in brilliance. I was cackling like a lich at a pun convention.

And Alex? Please. Just let the poor one clean in peace. That’s the emotionally exhausted maid energy this entire unholy mess desperately needs. The commitment to staying out of the spotlight while quietly keeping everyone from fully decomposing (emotionally, socially, maybe physically?) deserves a haunted standing ovation.

Highlights include:

- Puns so dead they're alive again
- Existential crises with extra bone rattle
- Scenes that made me laugh myself six feet under
- Dialogue sharp enough to carve a tombstone

A skeletal romp through space and feelings. Absolutely decomposed my attention span in the best way.

Final words:
DO NOT read in public unless you're okay with grave laughter and people questioning if you're possessed.
Will I read it again? Probably. This series owns my bones.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need a snack. Preferably… cookies, which I somehow managed to forget about until just now. Tragic.

I'm glad I read this book and will read the next in the series but there is something I couldn't put my finger on until I read another review. There is no real tension or build up in the book. No real risk or big event of substance at the end. It's more about the journey of the characters than an end goal or big event in the last chapter that we have been building to for pages and pages. I've found myself going .. "Oh, thats what we were building up to? Ah, OK. There was no real risk or real struggle. So it was almost a non-event".

This is good and bad. I find I am still intrigued but as a result I get more invested in side characters than the overpowered main character who watches over his experiment with the Limpet. I find Mem and Rem more entertaining, 17, and even Alex. I care more for them than their development than the main plot line.

Overall good book series and I will continue to read on, but its definitely a different read.

Audiobook Note:
To me, personally, the voices for the Limpet and newly introduced Cinder are just off. Limpet still sounds like a 9yr old girl, not a 18-20yr old coming into her own and learning magic. Cinder's lean into a southern bell drawl is just annoying as hell. (And being a southerner, that says something). I think she is supposed to be coming off as cunning and dangerous with her mannerisms and voice being disarming to others, but it just comes off as a bad parody of a southern girl.

Dead Tired 2 continues the quirky, undead adventures of Herald the necromancer, his dutiful maid Alex, and the ever-odd limpet, FenFen. True to the spirit of the first book, the sequel doesn’t aim to reinvent itself but leans comfortably into its cozy slice-of-life charm.

The addition of two new characters—both joining as butlers—adds some fresh dynamic to the household without rocking the boat. Their presence fits snugly into the established tone: casual, humorous, and filled with the kind of bad dad jokes that will either make you groan or grin (or both). If you’re here for character development, world-shaking plot twists, or epic battles, this probably isn’t your stop. But if what you want is necromantic domesticity with a side of undead sass, Dead Tired 2 delivers exactly that.

RavensDagger doesn’t stray far from the formula that made the original so charming. The pacing is leisurely, the stakes remain comically low, and the story thrives more on chemistry between characters than on any grand plot progression.

Short, goofy, fun, silly, and pun-filled litRPG continuation of the OP god-Harold's awakening story and his ever growing retinue.

This time around the Limpet takes center stage while she grows in power and learns how to command the armies of the undead, under her master's bored yet keen tutoring.

The book is nice and I enjoyed it, yet I was expecting Harold to have more of an active role and do more of his thing. This time he's mostly sitting on the sidelines, as his interventions as an OP god would stifle the growth of his warlock apprentice.

The book is saved by Alex and the mantises. They serve to fill the role of the clueless protagonists and drive most of the humor in the book.
Oh and I love the puns and the wordplay. Cheesy to the top, it's soooooo bad, that is actually really really good.

Onwards to the next.

Good, but less good than before
Less good, less funny, more annoying.
I liked book one and I liked where it was going, then the author decided to change it up a bit and now it's not as good as before, I'm less sure of where it's going. A large part of the problem was the introduction of a one dimensional character who responds to everything with "That's Stupid!" (oh GOD does it get old!). Secondly the former main character was a generally pleasant fellow just out for a stroll to see the world. In book 2 this formerly non-offensive guy is now laying siege to cities and starting wars. That changes to mood a lot.
Also. I really got sick sick of the eating cats & dogs jokes. One or two are forgivable but there were just too many and that started to make me mad.
Other than that it was okay. I liked everything else.

The bug woman, Rem, just wants to kill Harold and Alex before they reach her homeland, as ordered by her queen. Then the maid, Alex, captures her!

Harold takes a blood sample, then orders Alex to 'take care of her.' Which they take as bathing, feeding and recruiting her as a fellow servant.

Rem is originally less than thrilled, but realizes if she just goes home she'll be killed for failure. So, she joins the party.

Harold decides to boost Limpet's training, as he begins considering how to fix this world. Just smashing things is out... but putting her on a throne, with his wisdom? So he puts her in charge of a small army.

We meet Rem's sister, Mem, who's dumb but in a sweet way. She surrenders after most of the army she's in gets destroyed.

3.5 stars. I kinda feel the author has kind of forgot Harold just decided to look around then sleep. Entertaining read tho.

Love the story, could use more editing

I quite like this story, overuse of puns aside. There's a charm to the relationships that are both entertaining and heartwarming. The author even pokes a bit of subtle fun at themselves.

Unfortunately, due to editing problems, I just couldn't justify giving this 5 stars. Peek vs. peak at one point. Another work should have been caught by a simple spellcheck - perhaps an edit was made after spellcheck was run and the edit wasn't spell-checked? There were a few other minor things that still managed to break immersion. Worst of all, in my opinion, halfway through the book, the text color changed to blue. I read using white text over a black background and the blue text made it harder to read.

LitRPGs are always better in audiobook format, especially from SoundBooth theater. Always a huge fan of Jeff Hays and his parts are especially good, as expected. Rem took some getting used to, but her character grew on me, especially with her interactions between the Limpet and Alex. I'm enjoying where this story is going and wasn't expecting this to go quite in the direction it did and am eagerly awaiting future entries in this series. The wordplay and comedy in general is fantastic and has been a nice change of pace from some of my more recent reads. I love how all the characters have incredibly unique personalities and have some manner of depth to them, even ones that show up just briefly. The "epilogues" are always a nice treat.

Just got tired of the same jokes, innuendos, and ridiculous characters + situations. All the characters are so one note and rely on the same joke over and over (Rem was a paricularly tiresome addition, with her constant calling of everything stupid, then the hinting of Alex + Rem, ugh.)

I was sort of interested in the plot, but once they happened across an undersea necromancer fortress, where the new necromancer explains that the 'necromancer union' ranks are: “little boner”, “big boner”, “master boner”, “sugar deady" and “step boner”, “master baiter”... I just gave up. This sense of humour is just not it for me.

So the books definitely coming together. I really enjoy the story direction and how it seems to be shaping up. The Mantis character editions I can honestly do without min is not bad at least there's some depth and potential there the other honestly is just annoying I get it's supposed to be funny but it falls very flat and one dimensional. however, the limpets character has improved fantastically. I really enjoy the direction her character development is going overall the book is definitely worth the read.

This book is rather weird. There isn't one big, overreaching conflict. It is rather mundane as story. And somehow, the audiobook, worked for me and didn't leave me bored. It is not very funny. It is not very well written. the MC is overpowered (by design and that is corner stone of the story, so it is fine). It has all ingredients for a book to be terrible. And yet, somehow, I liked it - it was light hearted, amusing, occasionally, dare I say - touching...
As I said - kind of weird...
But I am looking forward the third book in the series...

3.5⭐

“Little boner,” Fenfang repeated. “It’s a position for someone looking for an opening” (p. 99).

The book continues through every possible phallic reference to a juvenile and ridiculously stupid extent. Some of this is present in the author's other series as well. Why? There's no world in which this is charming, funny, original, interesting or of any value whatsoever.

Purile humor and lackluster puns aside, the characters are a lot of fun and I continue to be interested in how this series will unfold.

Brilliant

Loving this series so far. Alex and mem are brilliant characters that are very endearing, rem is fun. Harold it's defiantly a main character that mashes the series worth the read and the Limpet adds a good amount a character progression so that Harold being more powerful that gods doesn't make combat over and done but uses it as a teaching moment to expand on limpets lessons. Looking forward to the next books.

Another bone to pick with this Necromancer!

Harold continues to plague the world with puns of doom and Justin of SBT is his willing accomplice.
I'm told he regrets nothing.

Another hauntingly good production of a killer story – it's so good, it's raising the dead......
You can hate me, even I feel bad for that one.

Looking forward to the more butt kicking maids, tsundre mantis's, and deadly puns brought to life by SBT and Ravensdagger!

The Punning Continues

The second novel in what is shaping up to be a LitRPG series an par with Piers Anthony's Xanth series for puns and humorously convoluted plots.

The author has some errors in the text (homophones, verb tense disagreements, misused prepositions, etc.) but I hope the author finds the highlighted problems in my Goodreads notes and finds merit in my suggested fixes.

Into the fire

Or at least the fire lands.
This book mostly focuses on the advancement of The Limpet's status as Harold's protege and warlock. Learning the fine arts of necromancy and conquest.
While Harold remains the most powerful entity in the world, the Pumper remains one of the weakest, though she is growing in power and confidence. Tom out

I really enjoyed the first book but the second one dragged a bit. I think the issue is the goals for the protagonist are pretty fuzzy and there is no real antagonist so no lasting conflict to pull you through the story. The characters are fun, and the fights are engaging, but the dead time between conflicts just drags.

A nice read

Harold's story takes a bit of a side turn when he decides to focus on his Limpet's training in the art of war. Meanwhile a local Insect goddess starts to meddle which leads to some interesting new members joining Harold's company. A nice and somewhat amusing read. Harold's word-play is top-notch! I look forward to seeing where his adventures take him next.

Original and imaginative story

The book has some minor issues - typos that are somewhat distracting; but the 2nd installment is just as entertaining as the 1st. New characters actually brought a new level of warmth to the storyline ( I LOVE Mem!) Highly entertaining and quick read. I can't wait for the next installment.

An enjoyable light read. A cast of characters that would fit into Pratchett's Discworld series comfortably. A Master Un-dead Necromancer with a penchant for puns & word play accompanied by an undead cross-dressing maid/butler, a young martial arts acolyte and (in this book) a large mantis with anger issues. Looking forward to another in the series.
