Dale is a serving member of the Royal Air Force in the UK and is currently based in Cornwall. Over the past 17 years, he has trained thousands of UK military personnel in Survival, Evasion, Resistance to Interrogation and Extraction (SERE) techniques. Before life as a SERE instructor, Dale was a military PT instructor and ensured RAF personnel maintained the required standard of physical fitness.
He is a devout family man, who is blessed with his loving wife Lucy, and two wonderful kids Sonny and Indy. He wrote his first book, Off Grid Kid, to share the many life lessons he has experienced during an extensive military career with a younger audience. Dale is a huge advocate of allowing children and young people to access and enjoy the great outdoors with increased confidence and awareness.
Dale spends most of his spare time relaxing with his family on the beach or rugged moors of southwest England. He hopes to inspire his children to spend less time on electronic devices, and more time immersed in the natural beauty all around.
Educational book for wilderness and urban survival written in an age appropriate tone for children. Includes shelter basics, making a compass, starting a fire, building a portable emergency kit, and much more. Would make a great gift for an adventurous kid!
My son really wanted to read this book. Great title, and very broad content - skills on building shelter and foraging, though don’t expect too much detail. I was a little concerned about the foraging section as there are illustrations but not really color photographs and we don’t really want our son wandering the woods eating things he thinks might resemble the pictures. But over all a very interesting book that covers lots of topics related to surviving in the woods and boy scout like skills, all of which are good things.
Whether your child is into camping, outdoor adventures or scouts…this is a wonderful resource for helping them to build up their outdoor survival skills. I really love the mindset focus that this book brings, helping kids be more resilient in difficult situations and that the author shares his wisdom naturally from his own experience in the air force. Very well done!
Hopefully you are never put in a situation where you need to utilize these skills in an emergency. However, they are important skills parents need to teach their kids because outside of certain organizations, kids will not be taught what’s in this book.
I bought this book to share with our grandson in Colorado. They are always camping, fishing or doing other fun outdoor activities. The tips in here are easy to understand and even though it’s targeted to teens, I learned a few things too. I know he’s going to love this book!
We used it as our science component this summer and it was one of our favorite parts of summer school, good memories were made! Lots of practical skills to learn (foraging, animal trapping, navigating, etc.), and there were some great mindset lessons for kids that apply to more than just survival emergencies
Every child should have this book. Hey I dare say every adult, you never know situation what may leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere. I was greatly touched about the story of the 3 kids who survived the Amazon.
Overall, an excellent book with excellent information. I would recommend this not just for kids, but for adults as well. This is laid out in an easy to read and understand manner. This is a great reference book and a great tool to have.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I really liked this book, even as an adult I find a lot of it helpful. We camp a lot and make fires. We'll probably test out the different varieties. I'll like to see which burns faster.
