Anthony Pompliano writes a series of short letters to his daughter with a mountain of simple, practical advice and easy, actionable ideas about how to live an extraordinary life. The language is simple, the lessons are actionable, and the stories are relatable.
The advice why you don’t have to win every argument, how to live your life as a documentary, why it’s good to change your mind, how luck is not real, and why today is practice for tomorrow.
Alright, maybe hate is a strong word, but I generally don’t care for them or their content. We humans are flawed, arrogant and feeble-minded—what "wisdom" do I have to gain from a random guy's life experiences? Well, it turns out the answer is quite a bit. Or at least from this one.
I received this book from a friend who speaks very highly of Pompliano. In fact, he has seized opportunities to talk to Pompliano and learn from him directly. I find this admirable. As I perused the pages, I began to understand the why behind a person’s interest in learning from him. His letters were genuine and compassionate, and I felt like he was writing directly to me. I truly hope Sofia and Leo grow up with a deep and intimate relationship with their father.
Regarding the content of the book specifically, some of his statements felt a little pretentious and harsh. There were times when I found it difficult to hop on board and say, Yeah! I get that. I’m with you on that. Nonetheless, I’d be remiss if I said I got nothing from this book. In fact, there were certain letters and bits of advice that I couldn’t leave behind. They stuck with me for hours, even days, after reading them. I hope to implement some of the advice found in these letters into my own life (if I haven’t already begun).
Overall, this was a quick, easy, and painless read. While I wouldn’t say you must buy and read this book, if it falls into your possession (like it did mine), then you should definitely set aside the time, slow down, and enjoy these letters.
“Letters serve as time capsules for all that you have learned and all that you have yet to learn.”
I found myself in desperate need of this book. Procrastination has become a recurring theme in my life, holding me back from achieving my goals and dreams. As I embark on this journey of self-improvement, I am eager to explore new strategies and insights that can help me transform my life for the better.
I admired Pomp from afar when I first found his content in ~2020.
When I worked on his team (back in the Pomp's Crypto Jobs, 2022 days), I was happy to learn that his personality in private completely matched his public persona: intense, creative, friendly, and curious.
One of the hardest parts about my decision to leave my job working with Pomp was to lose out on the "learning by osmosis" from my proximity to him as an inspiring founder/operator.
This book helped fill the gaps and continue my learning from a creator/entrepreneur that I continue to admire and seek to emulate in my own career.
An easy & enjoyable read, full of actionable tips, timeless principles, and inspiring stories.
As much as I like the concept of this book, and seeing the strong beginning, I was hoping that my rating by the end of the book will be higher. Yet there was nothing extraordinary about it. Some advices given to kids were good, with some I don't agree, and for some others kids will grow up to understand that it is not how it works in real life or at least there is a better approach. Last third of this book, I was skimming through the book, looking for something that would catch my eye, but there was nothing I could find particularly interesting. Would I recommend this book? Not really, I think you can find better books of this genre. Thank you NatGalley and publisher for providing the ARC.
This is generic and cringe. All the people saying this wasn’t like other self help books are either blind or haven’t actually read any self help books.
Anthony Pompliano shares his advice through a series of short letters to his two children (with a focus on taking action) - some great notes
Notes: - Tying your identity to titles, possessions, or external validation puts you at the mercy of things that can be lost. By grounding yourself in the person you choose to be, you stay steady no matter how circumstances change. - Living intentionally often begins with simplicity. When you strip away distractions, what remains is clarity. -Not every argument deserves your energy. There’s wisdom in knowing when to stand firm and when to let go. - aiming for two perfect pages each day might stop you from ever starting, but setting a goal to produce two imperfect pages each day reduces pressure and encourages consistency. It doesn’t have to be flawless – it just has to get done. - To grow, focus on the examples of those who inspire you. Comparing yourself to people doing less might feel comforting, but it won’t push you to improve. - The connections you build with others depend on the effort you put into them. - Plans and strategies are only as good as the steps you’re willing to take. - When you put care into your efforts – doing things the right way instead of rushing – you often make the process feel lighter and more rewarding. Remember that cutting corners only makes things harder in the long run. - your health is the foundation for everything else in your life. Ambition and talent can only take you so far if you neglect your body and mind. - Spending less than you earn is a foundational principle. - Every moment, good or bad, is part of the story you’re creating. Thinking this way can make even challenges feel worthwhile, as they add texture to the narrative. This mindset reminds you that the way you respond to life is as important as what happens to you - The way you start doesn’t have to dictate where you end up. - good ideas are worth saving
How to Live an Extraordinary Life by Anthony Pompliano is a refreshing and thought-provoking approach to personal development. Written as a series of letters to his children, the book feels deeply personal and intimate, giving readers a rare glimpse into Pompliano’s life philosophy. As someone who's not particularly drawn to the typical 'self-help' genre, I found this book to be a pleasant surprise.
As the book is a collection of thoughtful letters that the author writes to his children, it makes the entire experience feel genuine and sincere. These aren’t just dry pieces of advice—they’re heartfelt reflections from a father, written with love and care. Each letter is a gift of wisdom that he wants to pass on, not just for their future, but as a tool for their personal growth. The author shares life lessons, wisdom, and values he hopes to impart to his children, and this sweet familial perspective adds warmth and authenticity to his words. It’s clear that the author is not just writing for the sake of writing, but rather with a deep intention to leave behind a legacy of meaningful advice for his precious children.
I love how straightforward and simple, yet impactful. Not only does it have interesting phrases to attract your attention on each chapter, but also on how some of his insights are simple and accessible, while others offer provoking insights that make you stop and think. While some of the concepts may not be groundbreaking for those that are already familiar with personal growth principles, the way the author instills the ideas in his letters feels fresh and engaging.
Overall, How to Live an Extraordinary Life is a pleasant experience. I love how the author integrates his own experiences and lessons into every chapter. Rather than merely offering theoretical advice, he shares stories from his own journey. It's an engaging and motivating read. Thank you @definitelybooks for the review copy, giving this solid 4 ⭐️
The author writes a compilation of 65 letters to her child about life. If you want to become a useful person to yourself, your family, and society… this is the perfect book to read.
Whether you’re building a career, a relationship with your partner, family, or those around you… this book will help you face the challenges that come your way.
I enjoy reading books like this because they inspire me to keep moving forward. The language in this book isn’t too formal. Since it’s a collection of letters from the author to her children, it feels personal—as if I’m one of her children myself.
If we want to build something big in the future, like our dreams and aspirations, it’s okay to start small. Every small effort will eventually lead to something greater. The key is patience and self-belief.
I’m reminded of my own journey as a writer and translator back in 2020. I started with zero experience and believed that one day I would succeed beyond what I could imagine. May all these efforts be blessed, and may this very meaningful book continue to give me the motivation I need.
In his book, Anthony Pompliano shares his advice on How to Live an Extraordinary Life through a series of short letters to his two children. Through the pages, the readers can find interesting perspectives on various topics to inspire them to take control of their lives and achieve remarkable outcomes.
One of the book's strengths is its focus on taking action. Pompliano doesn't just offer cloudy ideas but lays out specific steps for improving key aspects of life, from mental resilience and personal development to financial independence, entrepreneurship, and building meaningful connections. However, some topics felt underdeveloped and could have benefitted from more personal anecdotes or stronger examples. For example, the author mentions Bitcoin in multiple instances where I think other examples would have been more suited, especially given his vast experience with entrepreneurship. Additionally, the letter style of the book is not necessarily my favourite format, but this is up to each reader's taste.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and found some of the viewpoints and principles of living a purpose-driven life interesting. It is a quick read that serves as a good introduction for people new to personal development books.
How you do anything is how you do everything--everything in your life is made up of details. Once you decide the type of person you want to be, you can start acting like that person immediately. Start small: the small things make up the big things. Consistency is incredibly valuable. Excellence breeds excellence. Today is practice for tomorrow; make sure you pay attention to the various lessons you learn because you will need them in the future. Watch someone's daily habits today and you will understand what their future looks like. Carve your ethics in stone (ethics are foundational principles that govern how you do things; never waver on these); write your opinions in sand (be willing to change these opinions when facts change because if you have the same opinion about every topic throughout your life, you are not learning and growing and you have not done the work necessary o evaluate your positions). The smartest people obsessively read books, pursue new mental models, enjoy intelligent discourse, quickly admit when they're wrong, are comfortable changing their opinion, surround themselves with intelligence, and seek to understand every perspective on a topic. An extraordinary life is made by building things of excellence. The best things in life take time to build. Extraordinary lives are built up of strong habits. We can execute whatever routine we want as long as we are intentional with our instructions. Build good habits and consistency will do the rest of the work. Have a bias for action. Successful people have the courage to act quickly and decisively. Effort creates action; action creates results. Learn to approach every situation with a level head. Big things happen as a result of small progress. Making worthwhile things is all about momentum. Momentum creates energy, and energy creates results. If you compare yourself to those who are performing better than ou, you become inspired to improve because you realize to have to catch up to them. The winning strategy is to build everything under your own name and reputation. Optimize your life around the act of learning. You can ignore the small decisions while you focus on getting the big ones right. Find the 5% that delivers 95% and ignore the rest. Learn to communicate because it is the one skill that remains valuable regardless of the industry or job you pursue. Time management is just another name for priority management. Create a space that fits your goal. If you want to do better work, make sure your work space is clean and organized. You can design your life by designing your environment. Strive to be excellent in everything you do. People respect those who respect themselves. When we see someone who knows their worth and can balance being kind but firm, we think higher of that individual. Their self-confidence is attractive. Become a magnet; instead of chasing things you want, make people and things come to you. Figure out what you want, and then design a situation where those people or things will be attracted to you.
Three simple ways to stand out: 1. Do the things you say you are going to do 2. Responde quickly and concisely to people 3. Make those around you successful
The more you help other people become successful, the more success finds you. Great communication skills make business and life easier. You must genuinely care about the things you do in life. This is a great way to ensure you live an extraodinary life. It is true of your work, your relationship, and your hobbies. Caring about what you do gives you an advantage in life. Be curious, be genuine, and be honest. Invest in relationships and experiences. Surround yourself with compounders. Compounders are people who focus on compounding knowledge, health, wealth, and deep relationships over decades. They will force you to level up our game. Conversations with these individuals are higher quality. Their success will inspire you to accomplish more. You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. If you want to become a compounder of knowledge, health, wealth, and deep relationships, then you have to hang out with the people who are already compounding. The quality of your future depends on it. Fire boring friends because they will not lead you to live an extraordinary life. You want to be around people who are constantly pushing you to achieve more and get you closer to your goal of living an extraordinary life. Find a few people destined for greatness and sprint to keep up with them. You don't get if you don't ask. When you want something in ilfe, ask for it. Manage a bad situation by being intentional about how you respond to it. Avoid complaining. It is hard to become a winner in life if you always think you are a victim. Competitiors are individuals who are ready to do whatever it takes to win and they have a positive attitude. They are constantly thinking about their next move. Competititors are too busy acting instead of sulking or complaining. You will face many obstacles and challenges in your life; use them as opportunities because it is all about perspective. Adversity creates opportunity for an optimist. The people who achieve their goals in life are experts at dealing with any obstacles that pop up as they pursue their plan. A resilient and resourceful person can find a way to achieve success in their life. Anyone can create a plan, but winners are the ones who achieve success when the plan falls apart. True innovators can adapt to any environment. The situations you encounter throughout your life are molding you into the person you will become. This is how you gain experience. The past created your strength; use it to your advantage. Life is a series of obstacles and tests. Those who learn to be resilient, persistent, and optimistic have the upper hand. Surround yourself with people who are intellectually humble enough to change their mind. Pursue high-value information. Find smart people and ask themquestions. Find good books and read them. Information is a currency; accumulate as much information as you can. The more informed you are, the better the decision you make. Build mental strength by exposing yourself to different ideas, different perspectives, and different belief systems. Take a few minutes each day to write down what you have learned and document good ideas. Stay on top of the details and don't lose your discipline. As long as you live within your means, you have a chance to build a life of wealth and freedom. Sell when you have profits to capture the returns. Find great assets. Hold them forever. That is how you generate true wealth and gain financial freedom. Independent thinking is the root of all good decisions. Find the time to travel because nothing will ever replace the real-life experience of immersing yourself into another culture. You can improve your instincts by exposing yourself to many different people and situations. Each new experience gives you a feedback loop that allows you to improve your instincts algorithm over time. Do epic things; pursue adventure, action, and excitement. You are going to die--we each get a finite amount of time on this earth so do something bold, courageous, and ambitious. Make sure you move your body every day. You will be happier, healthier, and more productive. Prioritize your sleep because it heals your body, allows you to recharge, and creates an optimal balance of hormones across your body and brain.
Ideas that you already heard. There is nothing extraordinary about this book. It’s full of “nice” tips and motivational paragraphs, but it’s not going to change the way you think. A lot of things I strongly disagree with, such as the statement that “ideas run the world” or that you need to “accumulate as much information as possible”. They are just meaningless blanket statements. Some were even more outrageous, for example that “academic studies show that you can become luckier but simply telling yourself that you are lucky”. Author does not even try to cite the said “studies”. It’s simply fantasy. However there were a few interesting bits in the book that made me think, for example the suggestion to call your friends for no reason or that “you will be surprised at what you can receive if you just ask”. Would I recommend this book overall? Probably not.
Anthony Pompliano’s "How to Live an Extraordinary Life" offers timeless strategies for creating a purposeful and fulfilling life. Originally conceived as a series of letters to his children, the book distills these heartfelt lessons into seven key themes. Pompliano blends personal anecdotes, actionable advice, and universal principles to guide readers through living with intention, building resilience, nurturing relationships, and achieving personal growth.
Living with integrity is the foundation of an extraordinary life. Every decision you make reflects the person you’re becoming, so aligning actions with ethical principles is essential. While your values should remain steadfast, maintaining an open mind to adapt your opinions when new truths emerge is equally important. This balance between integrity and adaptability allows you to stay true to yourself while navigating life’s complexities. By grounding your identity in your character rather than external validations like titles or possessions, you create stability and freedom. A life of intention often begins with simplicity, as stripping away distractions brings clarity that attracts meaningful opportunities. However, knowing when to stand firm and when to let go ensures that your energy is focused on what aligns with your values.
Resilience is cultivated through small, consistent steps. Tackling challenges becomes manageable when you break them into achievable actions. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on progress—such as writing two imperfect pages daily rather than striving for flawless results. Life’s setbacks often carry hidden lessons that shape your path, and staying open to these lessons helps you face adversity with strength. Growth is fueled by comparing yourself to those who inspire you rather than those who do less. Committing to finish what you start, even when it’s difficult, reinforces habits of discipline and perseverance. Ultimately, steady, deliberate effort leads to lasting progress and personal growth.
Meaningful relationships are built through care and attention. Simple acts, like calling a friend without a reason or listening deeply, foster trust and connection. Relationships thrive on shared experiences, as spending time with inspiring individuals influences your own growth. Respecting others’ time and consistently showing up strengthens bonds, while letting go of draining connections creates space for relationships that bring joy and mutual support. The people you surround yourself with shape your life, so prioritizing thoughtful, enriching relationships allows you to grow alongside others.
Achieving goals begins with taking action. While plans and strategies are important, progress depends on starting—even if conditions aren’t perfect. The first step creates momentum, and learning along the way allows you to adjust and improve. Discipline bridges the gap between starting and finishing, and committing to complete tasks builds confidence and long-term habits. Every effort should aim to create value, whether by developing skills, solving problems, or contributing to something meaningful. Taking action with purpose and persistence transforms even the most ambitious goals into achievable realities.
Health and balance are the cornerstones of a fulfilling life. Physical well-being, mental clarity, and a supportive environment all contribute to your ability to pursue your goals. Simple acts like daily walks, proper workouts, and a consistent sleep routine enhance both body and mind. A clutter-free environment fosters focus and control, while cherishing life’s impermanence encourages you to prioritize what truly matters. By caring for yourself, you gain the strength and clarity needed to handle challenges and embrace opportunities.
Financial freedom requires thoughtful planning and strategic thinking. Spending less than you earn provides flexibility, while investing strategically allows your resources to grow through compounding. Patience is key, as staying the course often yields greater rewards than reacting to short-term fluctuations. Investing in yourself through learning and skill-building multiplies your potential for future success. Recognizing high-impact decisions helps you focus your energy where it matters most, enabling you to make meaningful progress toward your goals.
Finally, life’s broader philosophies offer insights into how to navigate its complexities. Viewing your life as a documentary helps you embrace both challenges and triumphs as part of a meaningful narrative. Photographs capture more than moments; they preserve emotions and connections that shape your story. While your past influences you, it doesn’t define your future—you have the power to grow and change. Life’s randomness may seem chaotic, but trust that the bigger picture will reveal itself in time. Capturing good ideas, even small ones, can lead to significant opportunities when given room to grow.
In "How to Live an Extraordinary Life", Anthony Pompliano provides a thoughtful guide to aligning your life with purpose, integrity, and resilience. By focusing on personal growth, meaningful relationships, and intentional action, you can craft a fulfilling life that reflects your values. Through simplicity, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning, you can navigate life’s challenges and opportunities with clarity and strength, building a legacy of purpose and fulfillment.
To finish off the list, I have picked a title that will not only help you build a mindset needed for financial success, but one that teaches life lessons that will set you up for success beyond returns. In How to Live an Extraordinary Life, Anthony Pompliano, the prominent investor and entrepreneur widely known as “Pomp,” steps away from his usual market analysis to deliver a deeply personal collection of 65 letters written to his children. While Pompliano has built a reputation in the high-stakes worlds of venture capital and Bitcoin, this book serves as his “manual for being,” distilling the core principles that have guided him from the battlefields of Iraq to the boardrooms of Silicon Valley. He argues that an extraordinary life is not the result of a single lucky break or a massive inheritance, but rather the cumulative effect of small, intentional choices made daily. By structuring the book as letters to his family, Pompliano offers a sincere and actionable blueprint for anyone looking to reclaim their personal agency. The book is organized around foundational themes that Pompliano believes are the operating system for success: resilience, compounding relationships, and fiscal prudence. He introduces contrarian concepts such as “luck is not real” - suggesting instead that luck is merely the intersection of preparation and persistent action - and the idea of “living your life as a documentary,” which encourages readers to view their current struggles as the necessary “middle act” of a great story. He places a heavy emphasis on surrounding oneself with “compounders” - people whose skills, knowledge, and character grow over time - and famously advises readers to “fire their boring friends” in favor of those who challenge and inspire growth. Pompliano’s book is a powerful call to move beyond the victim mindset that Pomp believes plagues modern society. He makes the case that true freedom comes from disciplined routines and a bias for action, proving that you can be ambitious in business while remaining grounded in family and ethics. It is a quick but punchy read that balances the hard-nosed pragmatism of a war veteran with the visionary optimism of a tech investor. It serves as a reminder that while the world may feel chaotic, you still hold the “chisel” to shape your own narrative, turning ordinary days into a life of lasting meaning and momentum.

Some non fiction books are not merely self help books but they give you advice which can be applied throughout your life. This is one such book to which you can come back again and again for solace and wisdom.
Written as letters to his children , the author in each bit-sized chapter deals with life changing advice. The chapters are precise and straight forward. Considering his mortality , the author has created a life manual for his children which can be referred to as and when required by them as well as the reader.
What really matters in life?? What is the mindset to acquire to overcome obstacles?? How to respect time ?? The characteristics of a rational person?? The author has covered several significant areas where good advice can make life simpler and help in better decision making.
Not merely financial wealth , this is a kind of intellectual wealth that is as important for the next generation as is the former. In the form of a letter the author has given the book a personal touch which makes the content even more impactful and connects with the reader in a deeper way.
Short and sweet chapters with simple language and practical advice makes this book a must have in your collection of truly helpful self help books.
Insightful, straightforward and concise. In this book, Anthony writes 65 letters to his children with inspiring lessons on how to succeed in business, have great relationships, do well with money, and live a healthier and happier life.
Each chapter contains a lesson about something that he learned in his life. These lessons can stand on their own, or they can be combined with other lessons in the book. They're not difficult or complex, but mind-blowing in their simplicity. The letters are short and very easy to read. They cover a variety of life topics which are so relevant to today’s world – they bring comfort but also challenge the way you think to expand your mindset.
When I started reading this book, I was a bit disappointed to learn that it consisted of very basic self help book like advice. But it grew on me. The more I read, the more I liked it. I think it was the format of the advice that worked the best for me. How it was concise and based on real life experiences. It’s a more informal style of writing than what I am used to but that’s what makes it so absorbable and re-readable for me. At the end of the day, the best books in this category are the ones you can reach out for again to remind yourself all the ways you could be living a better, dare I say an extraordinary, life.
One of the best books which offers a very practical no-nonsense guide to live a fruitful and effective life. Author combines the basic lessons of everyday life with his life journey, drawing from his experience as serving in the military, his role as an executive in US tech majors and his entrepreneur journey. He serves them in very simple mental capsules, which makes them simple yet effective takeaways for the readers. This book will serve as very practical handbook especially for young adults starting their career
Great book with valuable lessons for living an extraordinary life
Anthony does a great job of conveying important - and simple! - life lessons in a concise manner. Most of the ideas in the book are common sense, and yet this is exactly what makes the ideas so powerful. These are simple, yet often overlooked/underused principles that, when practiced routinely, will improve your life. I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to live an extraordinary life.
Fantastic! I love the idea of the book and the execution was top notch. I don't agree with his worldview on everything, but there were so many nuggets of wisdom. I loved the stories and what a treat to learn from his experiences. This will be priceless for his children! I will be sharing this with my kids.
I received an advanced copy in return for my honest review...thank you NetGalley and Harriman House
One of the best self help books I had read this year! I was drawn by the title but was really attracted to the idea that this was a series of 65 letters the author had written to his two children! He compiled the letters and made it into a book for all of us to appreciate how to “live an extraordinary life”. It is filled with great practical advice and I enjoyed reading it! Do yourself a favor and read and apply its many lessons! 😎
The book is a call to action for us to savor each moment and to recognize the impermanence of life, as well as to make the most of our time. Written with the intention of preparing his children for life's challenges, Anthony Pompliano combined personal anecdotes with practical advice.
Life's wisdom often comes in pieces. By holding on to what resonates with you, even if it feels unrelated, you create a collection of insights that can guide you through anything.
Key themes: 1. Live with intention & integrity. (Build a foundational life-ethics ladder). 2. Embrace resilience & focus on personal growth (via steadiness in front of adversities). 3. Build & nurture relationships, recognize the toxic ones. 4. Take actions & achieve your goals. 5. Focus on health, balance & well-being. 6. Achieve financial freedom & strategic thinking. 7. Life's broader philosophies - try to imagine life as a documentary!
Life Advice, But Make It Cute✨… Every chapter is a letter to his kids, which somehow makes it hit even harder. Practical, thoughtful, and a little heartwarming
My Favorite Highlights:
“How you do anything is how you do everything”✨
“Carve your ethics in stone, write your opinions in sand” “You can’t live an extraordinary life sitting on your couch”
“Live your life as a documentary”
“It takes a level of obsession to achieve greatness”
The Amazon algorithm put this one in front of me. Really enjoyed the content, their was some good advice here. The author has written dozens of short letters to his two kids in order to teach them different principles and lessons in this book.
Really good content, but love the idea and format even more. Makes me want to write letters to my kids too and think more intentionally about those things I want to pass on to them (and those things that I don't . . . ).
