Low-Hanging Fruit: Sparkling Whines, Champagne Problems, and Pressing Issues from My Gay Agenda

Rate this book
A new essay collection by adored comedian and NYT bestseller Randy Rainbow Randy Rainbow has a few things on his mind that he wants to talk about. As a savvy social commentator tuned into the public discourse, his unfailing intuition tells him that the perspective everyone in America is clamoring for is that of a privileged white male complaining about a bunch of shit. While writing his NYT bestseller Playing With Myself, Randy saw an America in crisis. He knew that what the country needed to get back on its high heels was a hard-hitting gay agenda and here it is - Low Hanging Fruit - a book filled with sparkling whines, a few flutes of champagne problems and a Birkin bag of the most pressing issues facing the US, from dancing TikTok grandmas, to Elon Musk, the GOP, and Donald Jessica Trump. On the down low, Randy dishes up some sex talk about life on the dating apps, Craigslist hookups and more. (“Gurl, wait till you hear the story about the fireman and the goggles...”) Randy’s longtime companion, the glamorous Chinchilla Silver Persian cat Tippi, makes an appearance as she dishes about her life Chez Randy. And, in the most highly anticipated sequel since Top Maverick, Randy continues the conversation with his mother, Gwen, because who knows better than the Jewish mother of a gay man about how to solve America’s problems? Randy Rainbow’s Low Hanging Fruit – a bold manifesto for a nation desperately in need of a makeover.

With "Low-Hanging Fruit: Sparkling Whines, Champagne Problems, and Pressing Issues from My Gay Agenda," comedian/social commentator/bestselling author Randy Rainbow once again shows up with his unique tapestry of sex talk meets social observations meets outrageous humor in this latest collection of essays expanding his vibrant and alive rainbow universe.

Rainbow is likely still best known for his Youtube presence blending political satire and musical parodies unabashedly skewing a variety of political figures (mostly right-wing, though not exclusively). While Rainbow's universe has definitely expanded to include his wildly successful first book "Playing with Myself" and a national comedy tour, Randy Rainbow is still Randy Rainbow and if you love what you know about him then you'll undeniably love "Low-Hanging Fruit" even if it doesn't hit quite as hard as "Playing with Myself."

There's still a definite political angle to much of what Rainbow writes, his "hard-hitting gay agenda" tackles everything from dancing TikTok grandmas to Elon Musk, to a variety of GOP figures and, of course, a certain "Donald Jessica Trump."

"Low-Hanging Fruit" brings back some familiar Rainbow narratives including a delightful conversation with his mother, Gwen, that serves as one of the book's highlights. Rainbow is at his best when he's dishing out biographical stories or ranting on politics. I found myself a little less engaged when he dips into pop culture and/or when he's making light of having become as successful and privileged as some of the figures he taunts along the way.

However, underneath all the humor there's a rather pointed observation that America is a country in need of a makeover and, well, Rainbow is definitely up to that task.

Amidst all of his outlandishness, there's a surprising normalcy to Rainbow and he's the kind of guy you can see yourself hanging out with (if he wasn't so darn introverted).

While "Low-Hanging Fruit" didn't quite grab me as much as "Playing with Myself," it's still a fun and fabulous read from a man who has a gift for making us laugh and making us think all at the same time. Rainbow may very well be a lot more successful now, but he's still Randy Rainbow and there's for sure no one else out there just like him.

Randy Rainbow is a new author to me and honestly a new name altogether. This collection of essays was a nice break in my day. His observations and commentary on social media and society at large are hilarious. He doesn't hold back and his grievances are many and I often found myself laughing while nodding my head in agreement.

Pick this up for respite in your reading itinerary or life in general. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an early copy.

I know Randy Rainbow from his online presence with musical parodies and political satire. I was always impressed by his creativity and was looking forward to getting to know more about him and his life. Randy’s book is different from anything I have ever read but sometimes you need to read outside of your normal genre. If you aren’t open-minded about differences and have a willingness to accept differences, will you like his book – I’m not sure, but I am thinking probably not.

The book contains 24 different chapters all focused on different aspects of modern life and politics. My favorite chapter was about his mom – Ladies and Gentlemen…My Mother (the Sequel). I loved the bantering between him and his mom and she seems like an extra-special person. You can tell she is extremely proud of Randy but at the same time throws in elements of sarcasm that just made me laugh. That is another aspect of Randy’s book that I enjoyed, it made me laugh while at the same time, he stated the obvious of the world we are dealing with and that’s a little scary.

Randy’s book reminds me of sitting down with your best girlfriend with a cocktail (or two) and discussing every topic under the sun.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read and review this advance copy.

I read Randy Rainbow's first book and I gotta say - I think I liked this one more! I laughed out loud in a few places. He's obviously very smart and super witty. I enjoyed his cultural observations and the peek into his life as a celebrity who is not quite A list. He gets very personal and honest revealing his body issues. I think the book is a little longer than it needs to be; some of the chapters written in rhyme were probably not necessary.

If you are not liberally-minded then this book is not for you....but you might learn a few things!

I’ve been laughing at Randy Rainbow’s political show tune parodies for a long time, since running across the videos during Covid. This collection of essays was equally funny and I took my time reading the book. Pick it up if you could use some snarky humor in these grim days.

I love Randy Rainbow, the quintessential homosexual male, especially his satirical song parodies of right wing politicians. I certainly do not fill his usual audience metrics, although I do fill the “childless cat lady” slot that seems to bother JD Vance so much. And I know which (JD or Randy) I would rather spend time with. Randy makes me laugh. Does JD even know how to laugh?

Anyway, this book is funny, light and pokes at the right (and the correct) people. There is so much nastiness out there in the world right now, we are in dire need of something to laugh at.
Randy happily admits to having an agenda, and was probably banned from Florida a long time ago - and that is Florida’s loss, for sure! Part of his platform is packing the Supreme Court with drag queens. I think that could only be an improvement on what we have now and I can’t wait to see Kavanaugh’s discomfort when surrounded by swishing and sparkling queens! No more black robes, I am sure, rainbows all the way.

Another thing I love about this book is that I am now on first name terms with Randy’s Mom!
Hi Gwenny! Boy, did Randy get lucky with you!

So, if you want some grins and giggles, this is the book for you.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers, St. Martin’s Press for providing me with a free e-copy of this book for my honest review.

Randy Rainbow is a national treasure. He’s kept us laughing through Trump, through Covid and through MAGA. I had his duet with Patti LuPone on repeat for weeks; it made me feel so much better in the waning days of the 2020 election. I received this book yesterday and eagerly slurped it down in less than 24 hours.

Although this isn’t a book about politics, I note that it will be released a month before the 2024 elections, which will either provide some much needed comic relief or, if things continue the way they’ve been going lately, feel hopelessly out of date amid the growing angst that is America. After so many political music parodies, though, I found it great fun to read about Randy’s private life, his cat, his mom, and his eternal hatred of airport greeters. As a cis het senior, I probably was not the demographic for some of the sexy bits, but, hey, when you want to hear about a comedian’s life, you get what you get. His revelations were honest, open, and relatable - and definitely helped us to get to know the man, the legend that is Randy Rainbow.

Many thanks to St. Martin’s Press, NetGalley and Randy Rainbow for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

I adore Randy Rainbow, so I was thrilled to get his latest book, Low-Hanging Fruit: Sparkling Whines, Champagne Problems, and Pressing Issues from My Gay Agenda. While it doesn't read as a memoir the way Playing with Myself did, it was still a lot of fun and had me laughing out loud many times!

Low-Hanging Fruit is full of creative writing pieces and commentary on current events. There are a few chapters that get more personal, which I appreciated. But then I also loved how he narrated a section from the point of view of his cat. I was laughing especially hard from his pronunciation of "Valhalla" and from all his pet peeves. The interview with his mom was great and I love the relationship they have.

Overall, a great time is to be had by reading this book and if you're a Randy fan like me, you'll just end up loving him even more!

I so enjoy his cleverly crafted videos to songs; they are unique and funny. So when the second book came out, I had to check this out. This is hilarious. While the first was probably more about his childhood and trying to make it in show business, this one was more about stories from the time after he made it.
There is so much in this. There's a story about someone he slept with that had a Google fetish (really!). A chapter from his feline's point of view (so true). I loved the banter between his mom and him. His comments to comments made on social media- hilarious!

I have been a huge fan of Randy Rainbow and his hilarious political parodies for awhile, so I was excited to see that he had come out with a new book, as I knew basically nothing about him besides his talented singing.

Low Hanging Fruit is a fun, snark filled collection of essays that highlight Randy's ever-increasing fame and the perks and perils that come with it. Since the election, this book is exactly what I needed for a good laugh and an escape from doom scrolling on social media. As a mom of a queer teen, I found myself laughing out loud the most during the chapter interviewing his mother because I could definitely relate. I do, however think that Randy's humor and voice are better suited read in audiobook format as some of the tone and snark can be lost in print.

This book is perfect for a vacation read and highly recommended for fans of Randy Rainbow and anyone who belongs to or loves someone in the Alphabet Mafia, as my daughter lovingly calls it.

2.5 stars. This is broadly "elder millennial shakes fist at sky." My elder millennial fist is pretty good at managing that all on my own, so I didn't particularly need the assist. I did enjoy a few of the glimpses into his actual life and process, but so much of the venting felt like it was just filling a page quota (which he specifically jokes it is in nearly every chapter).

Randy Rainbow has created an audio version of his book worthy of his in person shows, which are always a hoot. He narrates his own quasi auto biographical vignettes in bite size chapters that are great for listening to in short spurts or for long periods of time. I listened on a long car drive and just loved hearing his voice !

The chapters are diverse. He discusses childhood memories, Amazon deliveries, politics ( Donald JESSICA Trump), his own Randy Rainbow for President platform and campaign, his gay identity, and as the title suggests he very indiscreetly reveals his self image relating to his imperfect body. . Another plus was the chapter in which his mom spoke with him, rehashing some memories that made me smile. Randy’s brilliant acerbic wit shines through every word in every chapter.

All in all this was a super great almost in person Randy Rainbow show. Being a big fan of his, I just loved this book. I read the ebook version along with the audio, and was very very happy that I was able to hear his voice tell his story. Five twinkling stars for this outrageously fun experience. Publication date was October 8, 2024 so it’s available. You won’t want to miss this! Many thanks to NetGalley MacMillan audio and St Martin’s Press for providing me with both the audio and ebook version of Low Hanging Fruit in exchange for my honest review.

This book is absolutely fun. A hilarious, millennial b*tch-fest, and I loved every moment of it. Randy Rainbow provides his hilarious commentary on life, fame, his mother, fans, social media (and the trolls), travel, politics, and the general state of the country with excellent comedic timing. He’s saying the things we are thinking; and when the jokes pointed at you, you’ve got to be able to laugh at yourself!

I was only loosely aware of Randy Rainbow and had not read his previous book, but I will definitely be buying it.

The audiobook narration speed was way too slow for me, but I enjoyed it at 2x speed. Glad to hear Randy as a narrator to really drive home the jokes.

DNF . I mostly skimmed this one after reading the first few chapters. No where near as good as his last book. TMI in my opinion. The best chapter was "written " by his cat Tippi. He could turn that into a picture book and I would read that. Just for the record, I am a big fan of his videos and I think he is a genius, but this book was awful!

I always find Randy's humor bitingly hilarious. I was so glad to get another chapter with his mother - he is lucky and so is she! The chapter from the perspective of his cat was one of my faves; I was remembering those cats I've known, lol.

It is well worth listening to the audio book to hear him read it. So many of his grievances are mine as well, we should meet up for Festivus. ;) It's also absolutely worth going to see him in person when he's touring, saw him perform in Denver late '23 and it was a very good time. Thanks for the laughs, Randy! Goodness knows we've needed them since election day.

The audio version is really good. I'm not sure if there are pictures that you might be missing out on from the print version, but I enjoyed hearing Rainbow read it himself.

I recommend this book for fans of Randy Rainbow. I also recommend his first book if you haven't read it, as that is more of a memoir. This book is more essays than biography.

Chapter 19, “A Dear John to Social Media “ was my favorite, but many other chapters had me laughing out loud. I rated his first book higher;I now think rightly so, but this book is super entertaining as well. It was the perfect antidote to another book I’m reading that is quite dark. As I said in my review of his first book, Playing With Myself, I love this human!

I have a complaint…

… but mine wouldn’t be nearly as funny as Randy’s new book “Low-Hanging Fruit” so I’ll STFU about my complaint and let you get on to his. (Hint: His are worth buying.)
You would think a book about — and full of —complaints would be a downer. As I write this, it is October 9, 2024 and the big ugly foot of Hurricane Milton is stomping on Florida. I have been watching all day from a hospital bed in Indiana. Randy’s book of complaints is the cheeriest thing I have seen.
Pain is why we need him. He takes a bit on himself so we can share a bit of the joy he creates. I wish I could stand between the state of Florida’s people and the chaos, but Randy HAS been fighting the chaos that added to this crisis for quite awhile. That counts for something.
He can’t change the weather, but he tried to change people’s minds and hearts. He’ll still be doing it tomorrow, and I’ll still be thanking him for this book, and for complaining on our behalf.
But I have a complaint, too. Whoever’s running the weather part of this, damn it, lay off! You’re kicking around the wrong people, while the guilty go around laughing. You have so many lightning bolts tonight. Can’t you be a bit more specific where you send them?
If you need a targeting spotter, watch Randy’s videos. He’s got some great ideas, and a great playlist to go with them.
Five stars for this book, ten for Randy Rainbow, and millions for people hoping for hurricane miracles tonight. Good luck to you all, and the rest of us, too.

Randy’s second book is more about his pressing issues, problems and things that annoy him. It does not contain insights into how he writes, produces and shares his awesome political parodies. That said, the absolute gem hidden in this book is Chapter 12 – a hysterical sonnet-like poem, written in the style of Shakespeare, about the fact that Randy wishes he had a more shapely, um, backside. It is so cleverly crafted, just like his parodies. You’ll laugh out loud!

Because this is my favorite part of the book, and because I am also a poet and parody writer, I thought I would sum up my thoughts about Randy’s outrageously funny sonnet, and his unequalled talent for rhyme, in similar Shakespearean iambic pentameter:

Methinks I shall ne’ermore be entertained
By none so fair (and foul?) as thou may’st be.
With prose and rhyme my laughter was sustained
By your Elizabethan-style, Randy.
I, too, a derrière do sorely lack.
A J-Lo booty we’ll not look to find.
‘Though cursed with “sheet of drywall with a crack,” (Randy's clever words, not mine!)
Thy worth is so much more than thy behind!

by Linda Sadick Furman, author of “Thoughts in Rhyme From a Contentious Time, Original Poems and Parodies Written During the Trump Years, 2015-2021,” where Randy Rainbow is mentioned twice!

I received a free ebook from Netgalley in exchange for fair and a unbiased review. I have not read any of Randy's other books. I have watched a lot of his videos. I have always liked him and thought he was very funny.

This is an easy to read book. I finished the book quickly. It has short chapters. The content is very light.

The book is supposed to be funny. Unfortunately, I did not see the humor in the book. It seemed more complaining than funny. I wanted to find it funny. I wanted to laugh.

I liked the parts of the book were he talked about his childhood. I liked when I felt like I could connect with the author. A lot of the book was a little too much for me. At times, he would comment on what he was writing. It felt like he knew it was too much too.

I am thankful to Netgalley and the author for the opportunity to read this book. I am thankful that I got to know Randy Rainbow a little more.

I received a copy of the book "Low Hanging Fruit" from NetGalley. I am a fan of Randy Rainbow. I have found him to be funny and talented at writing satire political songs that came from many different musicals. This book is more like essays of his life and how he feels about different subjects. He writes of what he finds annoying like the inconsiderate upstairs Apartment neighbor who keeps him up every night very loudly walking and listening to music. Airports can be frustrating especially when he pays the extra money for a "greeter" who is supposed to make things easier for him but gets to chatty. He is also not happy with bad grammar. I liked the chapter about his responses to those who have wrote him something annoying. to him. He had some good comebacks. He wrote a whole chapter with his a mother that he interviewed. He wrote of many other subjects as well in his essays. I found this book enjoyable. Like any book, I liked some chapters more than others.

As a huge fan who adore Randy's videos I was excited to see he had a new book. I'd read his first title & decided to try this one in audio form which I think was the right choice. He has an easy breezy way about him & listening to this was like hearing your best friend tell you stories over cocktails or coffee depending on your drink of choice.
He also got a little help from mom Gwen--this chapter was one of my favorites & Pamela Adlon as his kitty & this chapter was also totally adorable!
Each chapter is a short essay so it's easy to listen to in small bursts if finding time to read is an issue. Listen while washing the dishes or riding the exercise bike. Enjoy a little bit of Randy & add some cheer to your day!

Both casual & more serious fans will adore this book & I can't recommend the audio version highly enough! It was a fun listen.

Thanks to Macmillan audio for the opportunity to listen to an advance audio copy.

Another great novel by Randy Rainbow. Luckily, this one didn’t reduce me to tears (r.i.p. mushie!). But, Randy’s mother, Gwen makes a comeback in this audiobook, and also Randy’s new cat Tippi, who is voiced by someone familiar sounding, but who didn’t get mentioned at all, anywhere I can find. It was very adorable.
Again, Randy should narrate their own audiobooks (except where Gwen and Tippi speak, of course). And Randy should always include his wonderful mother, and his totally adorable cat.

Thank you Macmillan Audio, and everyone involved in the making of this audiobook. I really enjoyed it a great deal.

4 stars, and recommended.

My thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an advanced copy of this collection of essays by a man whose take on the news is both refreshing, different, funny, and leaves one with a song in their heart and hope for tomorrow.

Comedy is hard. This is something that many people don't realise, including quite a few people who say they are comedians. Parody too is also hard to do. One can have jokes about their family, that usually doesn't get moved out of the news cycle quickly, but a parodist has to be on their game, to see something that few notice, or that the world is confused by. The have to make the joke clear, who this is about and why should we laugh. And get this out before the next public embarrassment happens. Fans expect a lot, and the pressure can be high, but as Donald O'Connor sings, "Make em Laugh". That's precisely what Internet sensation and only reason to keep Twitter or X Randy Rainbow does. Plus he makes one think. And that's even more dangerous. Rainbow's second book Low-Hanging Fruit: Sparkling Whines, Champagne Problems, and Pressing Issues from My Gay Agenda is a collection of essays looking at the world, the Internet, the people who make us laugh, the people we should fear, and of course a few words about cats and moms.

Randy Rainbow started small on the Internet making almost prank interviews with celebrities, a few that became popular and started giving him a following, as he tried to make his career on the stage. 2016 was a year for a lot of people, and Rainbow started to make more comedic parodys about the politics of the time, presidents, hangers-on, those that deserved it soon became the focus of his musical parodies. This book continues Rainbow's adventures from the first book with essays detailing is life, fame, friends, enemies, and well everything. A few of the essays detail how fame has come to him, and how life has changed. Of course there are some words from his mother, and even bit from his cats.

This is the kind of book that people know if they are going to like or not. I liked it, found it funny in places, corny in others, but a lot of fun. Being old some of the references went over my head, being dull a lot of the naughtier things went so far over me they are probably in orbit. And while I liked the jokes about the current state of affairs, I enjoyed the more personal essays also. Reading one appreciates the work that Rainbow puts into his videos, finding songs, making them work with what he is thinking, and presenting it to the world. Rainbow is a good writer, able to make a comment, get a laugh and move on without interrupting the flow of the book, or just seeming like a series of one liners, like the dirty joke book that we read in school. One can see the care and ideas put into these essays, just like his other media work.

Comedians are some of the saddest people one can met. And usually the smartest and most caring. In these essays Rainbow shows that he is all that, and proud of who he is. Which is the best thing one can say about anyone.

How this man manages to travel and tour is beyond me. Not only is he introverted, he suffers from anxiety and what many of us would call "being too nice". People may walk all over him or annoy him to death, often just by trying too hard, but he still feels compelled to, as my grandmother would say, "play nice". I cracked up at his effort to right a perceived slight to an airport greeter and guide. Being famous or, as he notes sorta famous, has its perks but also annoyances, too. That's actually good in this case as it gave him lots of things to whine and be aggravated about, his words not mine. I mean, re-read the title. That says it all. Randy Rainbow, far from living the worry/stress-free live of a star, seems to be in a constant state of anxiety. Even worse, despite the rider in his contract, unlike those of mega-stars, his simple requests are rarely fulfilled. I somehow doubt Taylor Swift would be shorted a humidifier in her hotel room if she requested one but, well, you'll see just how far being famous but not on the A-List gets you.

While I'm not sure I enjoyed this one as much as the first book, if you read closely you'll pick up more about what the real Randy Rainbow is really like. He's insecure, a dreamer, fretful, introverted, anxious when he has to travel, wants to please, and, well, the list goes on. The running theme of this book is, of course, of him complaining, so I'm happy to say he does in his usual funny way. Is it possible to be both light-hearted and serious? Somehow he manages. I've read countless books by comedians and they often appear to be some of the saddest people around, so a hint of melancholy isn't a surprise. He's still looking for the one true love but does adore his cat, Tippi, who gets a chapter to sound off about life with Randy, and obviously adores his mother, Gwen. She has a chapter, too, though she denies losing him as a child at a mega entertainment complex (hint, Randy lived in FL prior to moving to NYC). There are even a couple chapters in verse. Nope, not telling. You're just going to have to read the book.

Bottom line, I thoroughly enjoyed spending more time with Randy Rainbow. While I wouldn't want to live his life (although I'd have a constant supply of chocolate on my contract rider), it's a fascinating one to visit. I do feel compelled to offer a trigger warning to those offended by sexual talk, although he handles his less than stellar romantic episodes in a light, breezy way. I actually found myself laughing along with him, even when he delved into his bodily worries. Hey, admit it. We all wish we could be more perfect. Thanks #StMartin'sPress for allowing me to share an early peek at the current status of Randy Rainbow. I know he's on tour as I type, so hope the hotels remember that humidifier and his water.
