“Kindness always was the cruelest form of betrayal.” I said that once. I just didn’t know how brutally accurate I was.
In the underworld of Oz, there are two people you don’t cross. I killed one, and now The Wizard demands I take out the other. Murder isn’t in my nature, but survival is.
Aunt Em stole my fortune and put a bounty on my head to ensure she keeps it. Thanks to her, all of Oz is out for blood. However, the true knife in my back belongs to Danny, Nick, and Crowe. The boys of Yellow Brick Taxi aren’t the saviors they claimed to be. I should have trusted my instincts, because in a place where survival is the only currency, betrayal becomes a way of life.
Now I’m broke and alone, with another Witcher to kill. The Emerald City is full of beautiful monsters. With no room for mistakes, the price of freedom is steep. But this time? I’ve learned my lesson.
This is Oz. There is no mercy here.
The Witch is Dead is the second installment in the Dark Oz trilogy: a contemporary why choose, mafiaesque romance that’s a deliciously dark reimagining of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This heart pounding retelling is perfect for fans of Tate James, Katee Robert, and Emily McIntire.
THE DARK OZ SERIES is not a paranormal or fantasy series. It is an 18+ romantic suspense with dark themes, and the main character has multiple love interests. For a complete list of content warnings and triggers please visit the author's website.
Most days, you can find Geneva wandering the streets of her small colonial town or snuggling up beside a fire with her husband, son, and two cats. No matter the location, she probably has a book in one hand and a macchiato in the other.
Velcro boyfriends should be a red flag, but I am just too invested in these imaginary relationships to analyse it too hard. Clingy isn’t always better, but in this case, it was. I do think the FMC needed the constant comfort though.
I wondered where the story would go after that cliffhanger and apparently, the action was only just getting started. Honestly, a lot goes on.
Right off the bat, we got another plot twist which I didn't anticipate in any way and will be reeling from for a while. I think I’m just bad at guessing though.
Some characters were reintroduced which I think was needed for the storyline. It helped split up POVs largely dedicated to how infatuated the MMCs were with the FMC. This is in no way a bad thing, I want a Crowe.
As mentioned, the action scenes were very present, but I like a ‘go go go’ book. Being on the run is a lot of work 😥
The spice was really amped up in this book, as all relationships had strongly developed since B1. Personally, I preferred the sweet, tentative moment they shared over any spice scene, but this opinion is book-dependent.
This book felt a lot darker to me. It had the same triggers, but in the previous book SA was mentioned and in this one, it was featured.
I was a little worried the aftermath of this specific situation would be breezed over, as the character seemed quite desensitised. I think I just needed to give her more time to come down, as your heart will break for her in the following chapter.
I think I was a little less in love with this book because it had so many POVs. The author frequently shared all the character's perspectives of the same situation (when they were momentarily separated), but it did get a little repetitive for me. I do understand the importance, but I think I would have preferred them not to switch as often. I kept skipping pages towards the end. I probably just have no patience😅
The cliffhanger was … depressing. I really didn’t expect that ending, but the beginning of Book 3 is going to be an experience. It really was a series of unfortunate events.
It did feel a little rushed at the end. Especially after this grand reveal was made and a certain character appeared for 2 seconds before they were ‘voted off the island’. I don’t know, maybe I expected more from that revelation.
Still a strong read with great writing. As always check the triggers prior, these ones weren’t very jolly.
Now I need to figure out what to read until B3 comes out in May. In desperate need of a fantasy now.
it's not good, but it's SO good. i am literally having the time of my life 😌 it's so silly that it's funny. i would say this book is literally just for having a laugh, but there's a consistent plot and characters that i actually like???? except nick in this one 🙄
sometimes you have to sit down and just accept the ridiculousness of everything to enjoy yourself, and this is one of those times xx
I will start off with the same note I give on all dark romance reviews: MIND THE TRIGGER/CONTENT WARNINGS!!!! Nothing is more frustrating for me than seeing people criticize an amazingly crafted book for something the author clearly stated in their TWs. At the end of the day, it is you, my fellow reader, who must be honest with yourself over what you can handle reading and what you can’t.
Okie dokie, since that part is out of the way, let’s dive into my thoughts on The Witch is Dead.
Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Geneva Monroe’s follow up to Dark Oz is nothing short of a masterpiece. Monroe weaves plot so epically that the twists and turns of this story are ones you never see coming. Remember and heed my comment above about the TWs because the evil and the trauma in this world is so vivid that it will bring you to your knees and have you thinking of Steven He’s “Emotional Damage” video.
In case I haven’t already been clear enough, this book is not for the faint of heart. It is the epitome of the meme where Emma Bolden describes a book like this, “This book DESTROYED ME. This book RIPPED MY VERY BEING APART. I read the end sobbing in a fetal position on the floor and I didn’t move for three hours. Please read it. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.”
Have tissues and your coping substance of choice on hand for this one. Thank me later
Continuing on down the yellow brick road with Thea and her band of sexy hunky men. Wow they had a lot to process through from the first book and then they got caught up in more Witcher and Oz business in this book. They constantly are trying to find their way back to each other and find where they fit in their relationship. No one on the outside seems to understand (and who cares - they aren’t a part of it). Love how the iconic Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion live up to their names though it is rather dark how they got there. But this isn’t paranormal or fantasy I would say it falls more dark mafia romance. It is pretty brutal and traumatic. There is a lot of the worst of the world’s underbelly showing but they keep fighting to the surface stronger than ever. Though that ending dude wth. Check triggers!
This series has me in a chokehold!! It has all the yummy stuff a dark romance reader could possibly want!! The spice is off the charts without taking over the plot. I seriously can't get enough and will be waiting on the edge of my seat for book 3 after the cliffhanger!!
This book has me in a serious chokehold. Every turn of the page has me on the edge of my seating, waiting to see what is going to happen next. The trauma, pain, fight scenes, and romance are beautiful written, and the spice is just the icing on the cake. This author manages to pull every emotion out of me and keeps me absolutely riveted to these characters and the journey they are on. The anticipation of what is to come has my heart absolutely pounding! I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!
Please heed Trigger warnings before reading this or any of Geneva Monroe's works
The Witch is Dead: Dark Oz Book 2 is an adult, why choose retelling, with darker elements, where the main character has multiple partners. It is not intended for minors.
Triggers include: human trafficking, abuse, discussion of on and off-page rape, sexual assault, child abuse and neglect, torture, murder, graphic violence, drug overdose, forced drug use, somnophilia, grief, loss of a parent and sibling, dubious consent, explicit and graphic sexual content, sexual content with multiple partners, explicit and graphic language, graphic gore, bondage, mature language, and bullying. Reader discretion is advised. Your mental health matters.
This book is so beautifully written you feel all the emotions as you read. I love how she gives you insight into how she decided to make her characters as they are very complex, very real feeling people. It's almost like you are watching a movie or standing there watching it all go down. The dedication is an amazing and powerful one. Very much our beautiful Thea in a nutshell. The artwork is gorgeous and gives you a real sense of the characters as you read what's going on from their point of view. This being said let's delve into the story itself and all the feels I felt along the way. In this Hot and Spicy retelling of The Wizard of Oz.
This book picks up directly after the end of Dark Oz giving you a glimpse into the dynamic the boys have with each other as well as them all coming to their own terms with Thea. I felt that the beginning was much needed knowing the boys would not stand for such betrayal let alone from a brother in arms. To them working to find their heroin and giving her her own well needed retribution. The angry, sad, mad, giggling, panting rollicoster that ensues in this book is almost enough to give you whiplash as it paints a beautiful story of the torchered Nick. Insight into the way he and Crowe grew up. This book leaves you needing and satisfied all in one fail swoop. Left me utterly and totally speechless for hours afterwards. I cannot wait for the third and final one to come out. 😏😉 I hope their are spinoff stories from this series.
I just couldn't be bothered to finish this. There's too much bland smut and not enough plot to keep it together. It could've been so good but the characters are too horny and make stupid decisions because of it.
Please make sure you check your trigger warnings before reading!
Geneva does it again with the second book in the Oz series! Omg the twist I didn't see coming! Who doesn't like a dark romance, mafia relations and well a twist that will have you saying WTF no way! This wizard of oz retelling will surely have you begging for more! And more there will be! So if you haven't read you have some time but not much! Grab your copy on 2/9!
Welp, nothing like diving off a cliff 2 books into a trilogy!
This book was all about the guys getting Thea back and working through their issues - mostly our Dark Angel, Nick. Lots of drama, several SPICE-Y parts, a few twists, and an ending that left me dreading that May is so far away!!
Warning: this book fulfills all your wicked desires. From the incredible world building to the rollercoaster of emotions to the spice… Make sure you have someone to read it with because you’re going to be talking about it for days!
“I hungered for her—and I hated it.”
This is the second book in the Dark Oz world and we get to see Nick’s background as well as his journey into how he became who he is today. But just because it focuses around his dark past doesn’t mean it slows down at all. We have skydiving, shoot outs, high tech boats, shibari, killer bees, and there’s this one scene in the rain… Oh, baby! Trust me. You’ll know when you get there.
“It’s a shame so many people want you dead. You’d make a brilliant queen.” I’m already a queen. That’s why they want me dead.”
If you pick out trigger warnings like you’re at an all you can eat buffet, this series is for you. It’s dark and dangerous and oh so delicious. At no point did I know what was going to happen next. Be prepared - this will leave you wanting more.
“A beautiful liar. I’d called her that once. I just didn’t know how right I was.”
I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
Wow wow wow! This book was everything the story needed after what was Dark Oz. The way Gen manages to pull twists and turns out of no where but always have them make sense is nothing short of a masterpiece. You never see what will come next, including the tears.
The characters showed so much emotion and vulnerability during this story. Thea was nothing short of being a badass (like always) and the guys I learned new things about them that simply just made sense. My heart wrenched for them, from Nick and Crowes childhood to Danny- iykyk the series of emotions are real throughout this book. I was scared to flip pages to see what was written on the other side and was constantly on the edge of my seat the whole time. If you do read please have a box of tissues on deck and whatever helps you cope, also be prepared to lay on the floor and cry for hours, I wish I were kidding. You will be destroyed, devastated, and feel like your heart was torn out of your chest🖤
This book - I mean I am speechless. I need book 3 immediately because the cliffhanger??????
If you haven’t I definitely recommend reading this series. It’s a Wizard of Oz dark retelling where the female never has to choose🤭 There is a list of trigger warnings so please be aware before reading!!
Geneva Monroe does it AGAIN with book #2 in the Dark Oz series. This series has quickly become one of my favorite dark romance series. It is filled with so much spice and so much action it is almost incomprehensible.
This storyline is so unique, it has me invested 100% of the time. Throughout this entire book I am constantly hanging on to the edge of my seat…even my socks were hanging on by my toenails. Thea is a FORCE! She is such an incredibly strong female character and her drive to survive is astonishing. This book was much more focused on her very complex but developing relationship with Nick and boy did I enjoy the direction it went in. The constant push and pull between them really tugged at every emotion of the reader in me and by the end of the book I was ALL in on them.
The ending…..THE ENDING GENEVA?!?!?! ARE YOU KIDDDDDDIIIINNNNGGGG ME?! I am going to be pacing my reading room until you give me book 3 because these are just TOO.DANG.GOOD.
Ding Dong.. Oh my goodness Auntie Em, TWID had me on the edge of my seat with the twists and turns.
Unlike the first book where I completely missed the fact that it was going to be more than one book, I was ready for the cliffhanger and boy what!! I am need of the third book, I need to know what happens to my Italian speaking Tin Man, the silent, covered in tattoos and always in the shadows type.
I really enjoyed having this book be just slightly more on Nick's background. It is dark, spicy that doesn't go heavy with one too many scenes and it's RH. Our girl Thea has three men. The twists to the classic Oz are there and make you think, lions and tigers and bears...and sharks! The pace was good, nothing dragged on even if you think there is a lot going on, you get the struggle of Thea trying to trust the people who betrayed her, the three men trying to overcome what they lack and realize that Thea makes them whole no matter what torture and heartbreak they have been through before her.
Check the TW before diving into the series, they are heavy. It is definitely worth a read, one of my top reads for the month.
Dark Oz was one heck of a perfect, wild ride. I thought I was ready. I said I was prepared for whatever Geneva Monroe had to throw at me in "The Witch is Dead."
I have never been more wrong.
The latest installment of the Dark Oz trilogy left me literally speechless. I had experienced so many emotions in the book - the final quarter alone! - that I needed a few days to put my feelings into coherent thoughts. (Prior to now, my brain was basically screaming, "!!!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!!?!!!!!!!!!" in a recursive loop.)
Monroe took her legendary-level writing to an entirely new level with "The Witch is Dead." She's managed to seamlessly intertwine epic character growth and edge of your seat plot and attach them directly to your beating heart (electrodes included), making it race and/or stop completely at the whim of the story.
Readers will be glued to the pages from beginning to end, continuing the journey through Ozmandria's seedy underbelly, but you won't come out the other side unscathed. Monroe's absolutely masterful writing will have sunk its hooks even deeper into you, leaving you BEGGING for the final piece of this non-stop thrill ride of a tale, counting the days until the release of "No Place Like Home."
The Witch may be dead, but the heroes' journey is nowhere near complete. I'll be waiting with bated breath to see how "No Place Like Home" manages to barrel through me like a cyclone through the cornfields in order to finish this amazing trilogy.
Hold onto your panties - Dark Oz 2 is so intense and so dark that you are literally - literally compelled to keep reading it until the end! My heart was in my throat the entire time I was reading this book. I couldn’t stop until I knew what was happening next. That’s how up in the air and volatile this whole situation was with our four heroes! As the story unravels, you find out new secrets, and about a betrayal, that will just leave you breathless! Oh my gosh, I just, I just can’t wait for this next book to come. The anticipation is killing me. This is a definite must read if you like dark romance. But I do have to say it’s pretty intense and could possibly be a trigger for somebody. I loved every minute of it though. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"If this is what loving the darkness looks like, then, Pretty Boy, I want it all,"🥵
The Witch Is Dead picks up where book one wrapped up. But this time, around we are given more insight into the male characters with more attention given to Nicks past and his vulnerability that makes you understand his "resistance " to Thea. I hope we dive into what makes Crow tik in the next book. This book had bombshells and plot twists that you do not see coming! The scenes became even more hot and steamy, and I will never look at tomatoes 🍅 the same way again 😉 My anticipation to read the conclusion of this series is out of the park. No Place Like Home coming 31st of May This book does end on a cliffhanger. Please check on your trigger warnings ⚠️
✨ Check out trigger/content warnings before reading ✨
Geneva’s writing is just 💋👌🏼 chef’s kiss, absolute perfection! She dragged me back to the world of Oz, and then left me hanging 😂
In book two of the Dark Oz series, Thea and the Boys’ story starts up right where book one left off, and it’s another wild ride!! All the emotions AGAIN- laughing, angry, sad, ALL OF THEM! The spice was spicing, the twists were turning, and omg just go. Go now! Go read book one, then hurry up and read book two, you won’t be disappointed!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
💚Dark Retelling 🖤Unbreakable FMC 💚Touch her and ☠️ 🖤Why Choose- F/M/M/M 💚Mafia 🖤🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Unbreakable FMC Mafia Touch Her and Burn You Alive Vibes FMMM/ Why Choose Retelling Emotional Rollercoaster
Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice Rating: 🌶🌶🌶🌶
This is the second installment in the Dark OZ series, and it packs a PUNCH. The stakes are higher. The trigger warnings are more intense (Please read them first. Your mental health matters.), and the emotions are off the charts.
Book 2 starts up right where Book 1 left off - Thea, betrayed and now on the run, and the men of the YellowBrick Taxi in the middle of all the chaos. They've been betrayed, and now they have to reassemble the pieces...or at least try to. This is Oz, after all.
"This is Oz. You'll find no mercy here."
Screaming. Crying. Throwing up. I don't know how to think/feel/act after reading this book. Geneva said we weren't ready... and I really wasn't. Every book, every chapter, every page gets better and better. To say this is masterfully written is a massive understatement. I cannot express how much I loved this book and how much I love this series and the characters in it. I read retellings all the time. It's one of my favorite tropes, but this series? This series is hands down my absolute favorite retelling EVER. I read this in two sittings, and if I didn't have a job and bills to pay, I would have stayed up all night the day I got it to finish it because it is THAT good. This story, these characters will ensnare your heart, squeeze it and break it into a million pieces. I'm already thinking that I need to reread both books, and I finished this one less than 24 hours ago.
Geneva, I'm ruined. I have other arcs on deck that I need to read and review, and I don't know how I will be able to move on from this one. It has completely taken over my mind. I may have already read the best book of this entire year, and it's only January. (At least until book 3 comes out!) Send help. 😅😭
The Witch is Dead : Book 2 in the Dark Oz Trilogy.
What to expect: - Dark Mafia Romance - Why Choose 🌶🌶🌶🌶 - Lots of Twists and Turns
* Be sure to check the TW's before reading. This is darker than the first book*
Ok, with that said, WOW! I loved this book and Gen wasn't kidding when she said to be ready with your box or tissues and drink of choice. Book two jumps right back into the action where Dark Oz left off. This book was emotional, action packed, and spicy. And when I cay spicy, Gen turned up the heat! I loved getting to know the guys more and seeing their relationships build more. Overall, I loved this book and I am so ready for book 3.
This book is so good I highly recommend 🖤🤍The Witch is Dead is the second book in this series. I must read book one before this one . I swear this series is like a dr
How?! How can you end the story like that and not expect me to run to the third book?! OMG! Tell me this is not the end for anyone or I will throw a temper tantrum.
This series is quickly becoming one of my top 3.
How can anyone not fall in love with the three MMC in this story. I’m swooning over Nick now when I struggled to like him in book one. Give me more of that Italian heartthrob please. 😭
*runs to book three*
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
⚠️⚠️Let me preface by saying that this is an adult dark mafia/dark romance Wizard of OZ retelling and this is not intended for minors. So please my fellow reader, do mind the TW’s at the beginning of the book because you and your mental health are important and do matter! ❤️
💚This is OZ. You’ll find NO MERCY here💚
WOW!!!! What a read!! The Witch is Dead is a highly anticipated, jaw dropping roller coaster full of plot twists, spice, intrigue, and pure deliciousness! If you haven’t read Dark OZ, you and your bookshelves have no idea what you’re missing because Geneva is a genius and a master at her craft with the way she weaves the plot, 🌶️, and characters into an beautifully written book. Geneva has definitely delivered one epic masterpiece in this follow-up of Dark OZ.
We pick up where we left off after the events that transpired in Dark OZ. Thea is on the run with no plan and no where to go and our handsome boys are chasing after her trying to find her. We are introduced to a plethora of new characters, we travel to new places, and we encounter old friends throughout this book. Geneva has raised the bar in this book and she CRANKED UP THE HEAT in the 🌶️🌶️ department thus leaving your toes curling, your face turning various shades of red, and you having to fan yourself while panting because the spice is off the Scoville Charts HOT! 🥵
You will laugh, you will cry, you will scream, you will throw your book/kindle while shouting a string of choice words, you will wish for a cold shower, and your mind, heart, and soul will shatter in the best way possible! So be sure to have a box of tissues and a coping mechanism ready because you’ll be uttering the viral phrase by Stephen He “Emotional Damage” once you reach the cliffhanger at the end of the book.
What are you waiting for? Carefully drop what you’re reading and go read this book!! I triple dog dare you! 😈
I absolutely loved this book, but it will take you on an emotional roller coaster ride for sure. I will also say to check trigger warnings before diving in. With that being said, this was an amazing continuation of this story. I actually think I loved it just a bit more than the first one.
There is some pretty stellar character growth in this one, and you get to see deeper into their persona and what makes them tick. Ahem...Nick...Ahem. Of course the baddies are bad, so that comes with the territory. Some exciting revelations are made, and there is definitely a cliffhanger at the end. You will be aching for book 3! The YBR boys are swoonworthy as always, and Thea finds her own place and strength.
Loved this one! This world is intense and amazing in all the right ways. These characters are starting to take over my dreams. I was blown away by how great this book was and now I’m in dire need of the next book. I’m missing these characters already.
This was very action packed which was entertaining, but the small amount of plot present was inevitably rushed. I was hoping for more grovelling from the MMCs after some of the things they did, but every hurdle in their relationships ends up getting solved pretty fast which is annoying. Let’s see what awaits in the next book.
This book had me hooked just like the first one. I just love these characters so much. Good thing the final book comes out soon because I desperately need to know they get out of this predicament.
