The Fear of Fire is book #2 of The Fear Of series by S.C. Sterling
Gripped from the first page this book had me invested from the start. Hannah Jacobs was excited to have a sleepover with her older sister Casey, but a blizzard prevented her from going. That night a killer broke into Casey's apartment and brutally stabbed her and left her for dead. Ten years later, Hannah now a private investigator she returns to Laramie, Wyoming to solve her sisters unsolved case. With the local police unwilling or able to help she uncovers a link from her sisters murder to other missing women in the area. As Hannah searches for evidence to
link her sisters murder to the serial killer, she puts her own life in danger . Will she find the man who killed her sister or become his next victim.
I could relate to Hannah's determination not to give up even when the police discouraged her meddling and even hindered her from searching out the truth. I enjoyed the characters and storyline, but I was disappointed to not get more info on the killer. I don't mind a slow burn but the end kind of felt like it came too quickly without enough storyline regarding the killer and his motives.
All in all it was an enjoyable read, and I recommend it to my thriller lovers.

I really enjoyed this fast-paced thriller. The story follows Hannah Jacobs, who is a private investigator. When Hannah was a teenager, her older sister Casey was murdered by an unknown killer who broke into her apartment in Laramie, Wyoming. Hannah travels back to Laramie to hunt down the killer and bring them to justice. As Hannah digs into the case, she rubs some locals up the wrong way and soon ends up in a cat and mouse chase with the killer who may have killed multiple women.

This was a well written and fast-paced story. I couldn't put it down as I was keen to know what happens next. The author really created suspense, and some scenes were really tense. I like Hannah's character and the way we got to see how Casey's death had impacted Hannah's own life. Hannah was flawed but determined to succeed in her mission to find the killer, and I found this believable.

This is the second book in the Fear Of... series. I haven't read the first book Fear of Winter, and although there are some references to the first book and other characters, it didn't take away from the story.

I will definitely read the first book and keep up with the series as it progresses.

The only reason this was not 5 stars is the lack of back story on the killer. However, this was a solid 4-star read, and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a fast-paced thriller.

Thanks to Netgalley and the author for an advanced copy in return for an honest review. The book is released on the 16th of May 2024.

The Fear of Fire is book 2 in the fear series and can be read as a stand-alone. The author wrote an engaging, tragic murder mystery that I thought was well done. The novel gave me the feel of Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. Many elements and scenarios drew me in and made me cringe. The MC drives the narrative and I was addicted to her determination to solve this crime. I liked the writing and this author is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

This is the second book in a series, but you do not need to read the first! I have mixed feelings about this. I will start with what I liked:

1. This is very fast passed. Almost no time to breathe during this thriller/investigation.

2. The fact that the setting was so isolating and felt closed off. This really added to the tension and played an important part in the story.

3. The arc of the story. Hannah is in Laramie Wyoming to find out who killed her sister, Casey years ago. She is/was an investigator, and has time to do this. Details of what she does, why she has time are very vague- this might have been explained in the first novel. Hannah is angry, tough, and distrustful. The town is small, and everyone knows who she is.

4. Her persistence.

5. Tony- a secondary character.

Mixed feeling!

1. While I get why she was so angry, and rightfully so, she used the “f” word to everyone she interacted with. I think it was like 15ish times in the first chapter when she arrives in Laramie.

2. Her derogatory remarks about locals- morons, rednecks, small town minds. While I get that the author wanted us to feel her mistrust in everyone, this was a little much. Not everyone there was awful!

3. She went off a lot to do investigation things that were dangerous and not thought out.

4. The murderer. When the murderer was revealed, there was no leading up to this person. Suddenly there he is! Also, no backstory or explanation whatsoever about why he did it. Most people who read this genre want to know the “why”. It just ended!

There are also triggers not listed- cutting, alcoholism.

Overall, the mystery part was good, and discovering Casey’s murder was part of a serial murder opened up Hannah’s investigation. I might try the next one- and hopefully the author will give us more insight into the killer.

Thank you to BookSirens, N/B Books, and the author for the ARC for free. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

This is book 2 in a series. It can be read a s a standalone due to there being minimal references to book 1. I do recommend reading book 1 because it's good! I read the blurb about book 1 and decided to listen to it before reading this one, and I'm glad I did. It was phenomenal!

This book is good! Hannah is the star of this book as she travels to Laramie, Wyoming to investigate the cold case of her sister's murder. This story is fast paced and intense! The setting is a small, remote town that makes the story even more thrilling. I was reading this at night, and was scared and turned the lights on. Hannah is a determined and strong female lead. She is great at her job. I did feel that she made some not-so-smart decisions at times to go off on her own in unsafe situations, but I admired her fierceness. The only issue I had was with the reveal of the murderer. It was thrown at us with no other information. I would've like more why or information surrounding that aspect of the story.

Thank you NetGalley and N/B Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you Storygraph and S.C. Sterling for an audiobook copy of The Fear of Fire.

Hannah, a private investigator, starts out to solve her sister's decade old gruesome murder and finds herself entangled in a larger conspiracy.

Second book in the series but can be read as a standalone. It's a great quick read that starts off shocking with layers of mysteries piling up until the thrilling ending. Overall it was more suspense than thrilling and I wish there was more to the conclusion.

The audiobook was pretty good. The narrator did a great job portraying Hannah and adding to the intrigue of the book. The male character voices were all very similar.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend the audiobook but definitely recommend the story. S.C. Sterling is very talented and I look forward to getting into more of his works.

Although I really liked the first story for some reason this second one just didn't resonate for me. I felt like there were things in the story that added no value and I don't understand why they were there. I also had a hard time believing that a private detective would be so careless.

A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

This is book two in The Fear Of book series called the Fear of Fire. It will come out on the 16th of May and I received a copy via @booksirens yesterday and I finished the book today!

Hannah Jacobs, a private investigator, travels to Laramie, Wyoming, to investigate the murder of her sister Casey. Casey was brutally murdered 10 years earlier and Hannah has never been able to put it to rest as the perpetrator has never been caught. While investigating, Hannah's own life is in jeopardy as the killer has targeted her.

A year ago I read the first book in the book series and I couldn't put it down. So, when I saw that book two was online on BookSirens, I knew I had to get it. And I was not disappointed at all. I downloaded it only yesterday and I finished it this morning. The story grabbed me from the very start and I couldn't put it away. The story itself is pretty basic but the execution of it is to be applauded. Entertaining, thrilling fast-paced, exciting - the constant fear of someone lurking in the shadows. And that's just about the story. The characters are worked out quite well and you really get to know the main character and why of her behaviour.

Just like book one, this book tells the story of what any human would do if a loved one went missing or was murdered and the police couldn't do anything or closed the case. And that's what makes it a brilliant read.

5/5 ⭐

Book 2 in the Fear of series did not disappoint! I actually preferred that this one was only written from Hannah’s POV. We learn a lot about her sister Casey in book 1 & how her murder haunts Hannah. I was hoping she would get the chance to solve her sister’s case. She did that & so much more! These books have been very fast paced. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a new thriller series!

This is a sequel to The Fear of Winter. I think it is better than the first book. There is no need to read the first book before this one as it works well as a standalone.

Private Investigator Hannah Jacobs closes her office and travels to Laramie, Wyoming to try to solve the savage murder of her older sister Casey many years earlier. Hannah is a troubled woman and the hope is that she will be able to put this murder behind her either by solving the crime or by knowing she did her best in an attempt to solve it.

I'll say no more about the plot as I don't want to write any spoilers. There are not many surprises or twists but there are thrills and plenty of danger.

The Fear of Fire is the second book in The Fear Of series, and I’ve been waiting a long time for this one to publish. My memory is a bit fuzzy with exactly what happened in the first book, The Fear of Winter, since I read it back in 2022 but I remembered that I loved one of the main character’s because she was such a bad ass.

Hannah is back and she’s still a spitfire of a character that I love so much. In The Fear of Fire, Hannah travels to Laramie, Wyoming to hopefully solve a cold case that’s been haunting her for ten long years. Her sister, Casey, was brutally murdered inside her apartment on a night where Hannah was supposed to come over and spend the night, but a blizzard made it impossible for her to drive over. With the lack of evidence and suspects, the case turned cold.

Hannah needs to know who killed her sister and soon finds out, upon arriving in Laramie, that the police officers in the county never followed up on key details and haven’t put any effort into solving the case.

It’s up to Hannah to collect clues, follow her gut instinct and pray that she can finally put her mind at peace by finding her sister’s killer.

I started reading this book after I got off work and couldn’t put it down. I read while I cooked dinner, while my husband watched Stargate? Star Trek? (I don’t know, I get them confused), and finally finished it after everyone was asleep. I recommend that all the thriller lovers read this book as soon as possible because it was written incredibly well and full of suspense. I would read the first book first since Hannah makes her debut in The Fear of Winter first. I desperately hope that there will be a third book in the series. If the author is incorporating the four elements into books, we still have two more to go, right? 🤞🏻

I read the first book of the Fear Of series and was obsessed however this one fell a little flat for me. I loved the connections to book 1 and even enjoyed the slow burn as Hannah looks for her sister’s killer but I felt the end happened way too fast. It left me wanting more. I felt the first book had so many different perspectives, even the serial killer who wasn’t completely relevant, but this book only followed Hannah. I would’ve liked to know more about Tony, the bad cop and then the guy who did the murders. Additional context and storylines about them that all connect would’ve brought this to 5 stars for me!

Another great murder mystery from Sterling. I was hooked and devastated from the very start.

Hannah is somewhat of a loner and she puts her grief from losing her sister in finding answers. You feel her desperation to get answers, hesitation to go back into her sister’s community.

Sterling sets a great pace throughout, always giving us enough info or a helpful character to carry us through without hinting too much to where it all leads.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

“The Fear of Fire” by S.C. Sterling is a gripping sequel in “The Fear Of” series that delves into the chilling depths of unresolved trauma and the relentless pursuit of justice. The narrative picks up with Hannah Jacobs, a character haunted by the brutal murder of her sister Casey a decade ago. With the case gone cold and the killer still at large, Hannah’s life is overshadowed by the specter of that fateful blizzard night in Laramie, Wyoming.

Sterling’s prose is sharp and evocative, masterfully weaving a tale of suspense that grips the reader from the first page. The author has a knack for creating a palpable sense of place, making the town of Laramie a character in its own right—its chilling winds and snow-laden streets become the backdrop for a story that is as much about the setting as it is about the characters.

Hannah is portrayed with a depth rare in thriller genres. Her vulnerability and determination make her a protagonist that readers can cheer for, even as they fear for her safety. The introduction of an amateur sleuth adds a layer of intrigue and aids in the slow unraveling of a mystery that is as complex as it is horrifying.

“The Fear of Fire” is a story about confronting the ghosts of our past and the lengths we will go to seek closure. Sterling does not shy away from the darker aspects of humanity, yet there’s a thread of hope that runs through the narrative, making it a compelling read.

The pacing is relentless, with twists that are unexpected yet never feel contrived. As the story progresses towards its climax, the tension is almost unbearable, culminating in a resolution that is both satisfying and thought-provoking.

“The Fear of Fire” is a masterclass in thriller writing, with a well-crafted plot, rich character development, and a setting that is both a sanctuary and a prison. S.C. Sterling proves once again why he is a formidable voice in crime fiction. This book is a must-read for fans of the mystery and suspense genres and anyone who appreciates a well told story.

🏞Good plot: investigator with issues😟

The Fear of Fire had a number of things going for it that made it a solid murder mystery and suspenseful read.

--I liked the Wyoming setting with the image of smaller cities and expanses of wilderness that lend a creepy factor when P.I. Hannah, the female lead, high tails it out of Laramie, Wyoming, the place where her sister was brutally assaulted and murdered, to remote, isolated properties and for hikes on solitary nature trails off season. Seems a local believes Casey was only one of a string of murder victims that may be pinned to one killer. Hannah intends to delve into the cold cases and ensure the killer takes no more women's lives.

--The murder mystery/investigation was, I thought, the strongest element of the story. But Hannah's anxiety, her history of self harm and her unabating desire to catch her sister Casey's killer all made for an interesting lead character. And they also partly explain why she is impetuous, and repeatedly reckless, in her search for the killer.

--Good side characters, loads of action (at times OTT, especially when it comes to Hannah's injuries) added to a good plot. Hannah's dealings with local police bring up the issues of anti-gay prejudice and over zealous policing with a touch of misogyny thrown in. Though I only saw a tangential connection toward the end to the book's title, I thought the cover was a good depiction of the setting Hannah was working in and, in fact, the cover was a major draw.

TW: history of self harm, thoughts of suicide, graphic violence.

Thanks to NB Books, Independent Book Publishers Assn and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

I jumped into The Fear of Fire 🔥 without reading book one. It worked. The Fear of Fire 🔥 didn’t just survive flying solo, it set my commute ablaze! Sterling throws you straight into the blizzard of grief, vengeance, and “why are you opening that door, HANNAH??” energy, and somehow, it’s brilliant.

Hannah Jacobs isn’t your polished, TikTok-perfect PI. 🕵️‍♀️ She’s messy, impulsive, and makes choices that had me yelling like, “SWEETIE, NO!!! THE KNIFE GOES IN THE KILLER, NOT YOUR LIFE CHOICES.” But that’s exactly why she’s magnetic. Grief doesn’t come with a user manual, and Hannah’s raw, relentless hunt for her sister’s killer feels terrifyingly human.

Sterling weaves a chilling ❄️ serial killer mystery through the icy bones of Wyoming, where every snowdrift hides a secret and every side character might be a red herring, or a red stain. The pacing? Relentless. The twists? Satisfying without being smug. And yes, while this can stand alone.

Perfect if you like your heroines flawed, your stakes high, and your audiobooks so gripping they make your final stop on your commute feel like a crime scene.

If you’ve read it, tell me you screamed at Hannah too. 😱 I need to know I’m not alone.

This is the second book in the series, but I think it would be more accurate to categorize it as a spin-off of the first one, since it follows only one of the characters from it.
I believe, that letting go of the multiple POV for this one, and having it only follow Hannah was the best decision for the writing style. It feels more structured and easy-flowing than the first one.
But although the writing improved immensely, the story still needed more thought put into it.
Hannah is as hot-headed as ever, and the story tries to portray that as a good thing, while, really, she is just making her own work harder.

But i do think that my biggest problem was with the ending.

Also... there is no fear of fire in this book.

Batten down the hatches it's going to be a bumpy ride! There are more twists and turns in this story than in a pretzel. The characters are realistic, multi-dimensional, and broken. Hannah has been looking for her sister's killer for years. Because of that and the stress of Casey's unsolved murder, Hannah has more than her fair share of demons. To try and cope she has become a cutter. As much for her sanity as for her search for justice, Hannah has decided she has to solve her sister's case and won't give up until she does. She is truly a flawed, broken heroine. But I like her just the same.

Sometimes when someone is investigating a cold case, especially the case of a loved one, the clues feel contrived and unrealistic. Yet Mr. Sterling handles the revelation of the clues quite well. None of it feels contrived or could never happen in real life. He stays within the realm of actual possibility.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and hope Mr. Sterling has more plans for Hannah. I missed Morgan from Book 1 and hope Mr. Sterling will find someone new for Hannah.

I finished this fast paced dark thriller in two days, just like the first book in The Fear of series, and I look forward to reading book 3. The fear of Fire takes place in Laramie, Wyoming.

A decade prior to book one: a teenager Hannah looks forward to staying the night at her older sisters place (Casey). However, a blizzard changes the plan and forces Hannah to stay home. That night, Casey goes to sleep after her usual nightly routine but is abruptly woken up in the middle of the night by the sense that someone is in the room. It is this same night that Casey is brutally murdered.

Present day, Hannah travels from her home in Colorado to Wyoming to hopefully find the one who took her sisters life. The case has been cold for a decade but this doesn't deter Hannah from trying. A cat and mouse game ensues between Hannah and the killer. will she succumb to his farm?

I felt book 2 was fast paced and full of suspense with each new turn of the page or passing chapter. You could feel.that Hannah was a bloodhound sniffing out the scent to the final destination but you also got the sense a predator was not⁶mm far behind: also sniffing out her scent a few steps behind that.

Hannah has yet to address the loss of her sister Casey a decade ago, when a murderer broke into the latter's apartment and stabbed her to death.

It is even harder to do that when Hannah is aware that if their original plan for her to sleep over with Casey had gone ahead - instead of being postponed as a result of the brutal snowstorm that hit the city of Laramie, Wyoming that night - Hannah could have ended up dead alongside her sister.

Desperate for answers, she returns home and teams up with a local sleuth to find out what happened to her sister. What Hannah doesn't expect is the possibility of a link with a serial killer that their investigations uncover...Not to mention the danger that this then puts her in!

Hannah is an appealing protagonist and readers will root for her. The story is interesting and keeps you engaged almost throughout. Though part of a series, this can definitely be read as a stand-alone. It gets 3.5 stars.

I read this one immediately after book one in the series, and didn’t like it as much as the first one. There were quite a few sentences that just made no sense to me and the ending was not great. I thought the buildup of this story read very similarly to the first book in that there are different leads the investigators follow that were very smart and fast-paced, but the ending really fell flat. There was no backstory as to who the killer was at all and that was just so odd because there wasn’t a “twist” it was just the end. Book one actually did a good job setting up this storyline though as Hannah was someone we already knew and (for me) liked although she was a little more unlikable in this book.

Also really hoping that the killer is not still alive because from the description of the fire and his other wounds, that would be very unbelievable.

*Giveaway read*
The Fear of Fire by S.C. Sterling is a gripping read that keeps you hooked from start to finish.
The main character, Hannah, is dealing with the heavy loss of her sister, who was murdered ten years ago. Now a Private Investigator, Hannah's compulsion to find answers is anything but straightforward. The small-town biases she faces make her goal even harder, adding layers of tension and intrigue. Sterling does an amazing job portraying her struggle and the real-life obstacles of dealing with unresolved trauma and questions left unanswered.
The unexpected ending is a real kicker, rounding off a story that’s both intense and deeply moving. If you enjoy suspenseful, emotionally charged stories, this one’s definitely worth a read.
Trigger warning: the MFC has reflections of self-harm, thoughts of suicide and self-medicating alcohol consumption

I won both of S.C. Sterling's books (the first a paperback of The Fear of Winter and the second the audiobook of The Fear of Fire). I'm glad I had the opportunity to read another one of these books after the first was a bit lackluster to me.

I think Sterling remedied the issues of the first book by putting the focus on a sole character who we got to spend time with and thus made them more likeable. Hannah was my favorite from the first book and I wanted to get some resolution around her sister's murder. This book did that quite well and I enjoyed it even if you decided to read it as a standalone.

My only issue with the book is also a pro of the book. Since these thrillers are short, you get to the conclusion quickly without much filler content (pro). However, because of that the ending felt rushed and I wanted a bit more build up (con).

That being said, this book convinced me to read another of Sterling's books if it stars Hannah or another singular character that we can get behind.

"The Fear of Fire," the second book in "The Fear Of" series by S.C. Sterling, captures the reader's attention from the very first page. The protagonist, Hannah Jacobs, is eager for a sleepover with her older sister Casey, but a blizzard thwarts her plans. That same night, a murderer invades Casey's apartment, leaving her brutally stabbed and barely alive. A decade later, Hannah, now a seasoned private investigator, returns to Laramie, Wyoming, determined to crack the cold case of her sister's attack. The narrative is engaging with well-crafted characters and a compelling storyline. However, the lack of details about the killer was a slight letdown. Nonetheless, the book's pace is relentless, and the suspense is masterfully built, making it impossible to put down. The anticipation for the next book in the series is high, thanks to the author's skill in weaving tension and excitement throughout the story. A heartfelt thank you to Netgalley and the author for providing an advanced copy.

Hannah has put her private investigation business on hold whilst she travels to Laramie to try to reopen the cold case that has been haunting her. She is determined to track down the man who raped & killed her sister ten years ago. With no help from the local police Hannah discovers via an amateur sleuth that rather than an isolated event there is serial killer in the area. The loss of her sister has caused Hannah very real personal issues but with bravery bordering on recklessness she is determined to pursue the monster.

I really enjoyed the story and characters and would have given 5 stars had I not found the ending a little rushed and there were too many unanswered question for my liking.

This, the second book in a series, can be read as a standalone but I'd recommend reading "The Fear of Winter" first, if you can.

The Fear of Fire by S.C.Sterling is book 2 of the "The Fear Of" series.

The story starts with a gruesome murder of a young girl, Casey, in her apartment. Ten years later her younger sister, Hannah Jacobs, who is now a private investigator is on a quest to solve her sisters crime and bring justice and peace to both her sister and herself. Her investigations bring her face to face with the reality of lax crime solving efforts, prejudices and the scent of a serial killer.

This was a gripping, fast paced book which is well written. I just felt that the personality of the killer could have been a little more fleshed out. A little more insight into this mind would have been fascinating.

All in all this was a book which I enjoyed reading.

Thank you to Book Sirens and the author for the ARC.

Hannah was headed for a sleepover with her older sister Casey, but a blizzard cancelled her plans. The next morning, it is discovered that her sister was brutally murdered. It has been years and the murder has never been solved. After a dramatic change in her career, she decides it is time to face her memories and solve her sister’s case. She discovers several murders that have things in common with her sisters that the police never connected. Is there a serial killer on the loose? Will she be able to bring closure after so many years?
This is a great mystery. Takes some time getting used to the writer’s style of going back and forth, but worth the effort. Second in the series, I would recommend reading the first before starting this book. Thanks to BookSirens for a copy of this book.

Fear of Fire

This is the second book in the "The Fear Of" series. While the book can be read as a stand-alone book, I recommend reading the first book, "The Fear of Winter", to get some background information on the main character and her backstory. The writer does a great job keeping you involved and guessing until the end. If you are looking for a story with an untarnished lead character, this book might not be for you. However, if you don't mind your hero being slightly flawed, this is a great story for those looking for a suspense book. I personally enjoyed this book a little more than the first one, but I feel both should be read to get the complete picture leading to this point.

I won a copy of this work in a giveaway, and the author was kind enough to send me both book 1 and book 2 in exchange for my opinions.

This story is a suspenseful read. It has a dark, intense, and unsettling vibe that deals with murder investigation, mental health, and self-harm, among other coping mechanisms of survived trauma.

Although this is book two in a series and has continuity of characters and story from the first book, it can also be read as a standalone. Overall, it is a decent read of the crime/thriller/suspense genre.

A last thought is perhaps a book three from the killer's perspective with flashback chapters from the victim's POV would tie this into a nice Trilogy to get a better sense of the murderer and what was going on in their head?
