Rate this book
Only An Outsider Can Show Them The WayOn Irkalla, nothing can be taken for granted, not even air. Janus Invarian is a refugee, an Outsider, destined to do the dangerous, dirty work the citizens of Prime Dome won't do in order to support his gifted sister and troublesome uncle. Most Primers would rather see him exiled to the Void, but when an accident leaves their champion dead and the dome on the path to total collapse, Janus will have to lead a team across the barren, airless surface of Irkalla to get them the help they need to survive.

As Prime Dome's first Outsider aspirant, the hopes of many rest on his shoulders. But hope isn't a viable strategy, and even if Janus can survive mechanical failures, predatory triliths, and the constant threat of the airless landscape and burning sun, he'll need to enlist help from whoever he can find, even bitter enemies.

Dozens of teams will compete in the Trials, but only one team will win the prize.

Void Runner is an action-packed race against the clock on an airless planet where any mistake may be our heroes’ last. Written by D.J. Bodden and D. Ahren Bell, buy Void Runner now to start your journey across the dust.

Ah finally a book by DJ Bodden, whose writing I really love. This the first book in a new sci-fi dystopian series sure did not disappoint and made the wait worthwhile. Janus is a Promethean refugee on Prime Dome, he is seen as an outsider and he carries out strenuous and dangerous work in order to eke a living for his gifted younger sister Callie and his drunkard uncle Ivan. All outsiders are treated as the lowest of the low in this hierarchical society, they had sought refuge here after his parents were killed and Prometheus was no longer viable. However suddenly the table turned because the aspirant for the trials died, and Janus was chosen to represent Prime dome. This was the first time an outsider became an aspirant, and Janus knew that all lives on Prime Dome would be depending on him to survive. He and the Invarian team face many dangers as they traverse the dust and face the void to arrive at their final destination. This book is heart stopping at times, it is full of constant action, and put me in mind of The Hunger Games as they fought for survival. Janus is a man of great morals, looked out for those who were weak and never ever gave up, he faces anything thrown at him with great fortitude but carries so much responsibility even for deaths of others which were not his fault. He will do anything to make sure Callie has a better chance at life and wants to change the way outsiders are treated in the dome. I love where this series is going, hate the way the book ended, and the way the priests of the Survivor Cult are using Janus but I cannot wait to get my hands on book 2 of this very thrilling series.
