This book is solidly 4 stars except for the annoying love triangle that took up way too much page time 😑

Eira is a great character and it's been fun watching her grow. I especially love all her interactions with Adela in this book and how she grows into a lot of her power.

The romance also feels a bit young and this series feels like it fits pretty squarely in the YA genre, whereas Elise's married to magic series feels more NA.

Overall, it did feel like this was a bit more of a filler or transition book in the series, but there was still a lot that happened, it just didn't feel super connected to the storyline from the first couple of books.

I fell in love with Elise’s books when I read A Deal with the Elf King, and then I found myself reading her other series. The Trial of Sorcerers series has everything I could ask for: sorcerer tournaments, elemental magic, found family, pirates, action, and adventure that kept me on my toes.

An Heir of Frost picks up right where A Tournament of Crowns left off. Eira finally gets to meet the mysterious and infamous pirate queen Adela and it’s not quite what she expected. Eira and her friends are still trying to stop the Pillars and I truly adored the found family.

I always love a good high seas adventure with pirates and this book scratched that itch.

I’m excited for the final installment in this series!

Love triangles aren’t my favorite trope and I wish this one hadn’t been drawn out so long.

An absolutely swashbuckling ride of fun! This book is definitely a strong addition to the Trial Of Sorcerers series but should not be read as a standalone. There’s just too many relationships, plot points and background that are established in previous books. IF, however, one has read the rest of this series, this installment will be a fabulous continuation!

Why? Because Eira FINALLY meets the Pirate Queen, herself. In fact the entire story revolves around their interactions and growing understanding. It is fabulous and so well done in the very nuanced way Ms. Kova develops the relationship between the two. There is also all kinds of action, magic and even some tragic turns within her friendships that keep one anxiously turning the pages and ultimately tearing up a bit.

The only thing that kept this from a five star read was the love triangle. I really, REALLY hate love triangles to begin with and this one is especially egregious. Eira has two guys after her and she can’t decide which to choose, so she has almost-sex with one the DAY AFTER doing much the same with the other the previous night (and similar situations happen not once but multiple times throughout the book.) Then, she feels awful for leading them both on…YUCK! Kinda ruined an otherwise totally awesome read.

THANK YOU Elise Kova for the ARC!!

WHERE IS BOOK FIVE.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

I CAN NOT. I need the conclusion to this series ASAP. Ahhhhh Elise Kova writes some of the best cliffhangers I’ve ever read and this was no different. There’s so many unanswered questions (in the best way) and I can’t wait for the epic finale.

AND TO SEE WHERE THIS LOVE TRIANGLE GOES.

I have thoughts and implications and I swear if I’m wrong I will probably feel some intense rage so let’s hope that goes well. Because gosh dang those were some FIERY kisses and I was here for every moment. Even caught myself conflicted a few times.

Eira is just my favorite. I LOVE the character growth over the whole series. From naive and not open about trusting and her plans, to learning to lean on others and work together all while strengthening her own powers is next level. I love this found family group and the ups and downs that they go through. It brings all the feels. And now I’m also in love with Adela??? The pirate queen is exactly the type of character I was hoping she’d be and was the perfect figure for Eira at this point in her life. I love where this is going.

The whole book was a ride. I found myself inhaling the pages and did not want to put it down. I love love love being back in the Air Awakens universe (have you read that yet because YOU SHOULD). Not so casually waiting till I can get my hands on book five.

Overall audience notes:
- Upper YA Fantasy
- Language: very little
- Romance: vague almost love scene; otherwise heated make-outs
- Violence: high
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of life, loss of loved ones, weapons/magical/physical violence, torture

3.75 I think this book may be my least favorite in the series so far. And that’s not to say I didn’t really enjoy it, but I just didn’t like this one as much as the others. This series has been amazing so far, so my standards are pretty high, and while I thought this book was fantastic, it did feel like a lot of side quests that had relevance, but didn’t feel like they moved the main conflict of the pillars forward.

For me, after the intensity of the last book, this book felt much slower and like what was going on didn’t have as much value until the end. Which, honestly, may have been the right move for this series since there’s so much going on, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to like this book as much.

There were so many pros to this book. The ending…I can’t even speak of.

Okay, Ducot and Noelle are the cutest. Their relationship is handled so well throughout this series, and in this book, the slow going into it finally pays off. I love them. Ducot is one of my favorite characters so seeing him in love with Noelle is so beautiful.

Eira also has some pretty good character development in this book. She’s more controlled, more thoughtful, more honest. I love that last part the most because it kills me in the previous books when she’s constantly hiding things. The only thing is, sometimes I think she lacks confidence as a leader but really only with her friends, so that’s probably her next improvement.

Also, the relationship between Adela and Eira is golden. Love it so much! I love how the characters admit that they’re more morally gray.

I have basically 2 complaints.

First is, the love triangle is…not great. I’m rarely a fan of love triangles. It handled in an interesting way, where they’re really upfront about it, and I honestly don’t know how I feel about it.

My other complaint is that Alyss feels like such a side character here and not a best friend. She’s barely in this book! Alyss is my favorite character, besides Ducot, and she feels so minor. She has her love story that she’s writing (plus there might be a spark of romance from another character) but I want her in it more! I want her one on one conversations with Eira again because we don’t get a single one in this book. And if it was there, it was minor.

As always, the writing and character building and world building and magic system, all beautiful! Though I have complaints, I did really love this book and I can’t wait for the next book!

while this really felt like a filler book, I loved some of the character development we got of Eira. not mention that her relationship with Adela was also very interesting and I hope we will still encounter her in the next (and last) book.

I LOVED every part of this book except the romance.

The romance was so frustrating—it honestly made me not want to pick the book up sometimes. I don’t mind a love triangle, especially when everyone’s on the same page. But the annoying part was her constantly saying she couldn’t choose, comparing the boys over and over, and feeling bad for “stringing” them along… even though they literally said they were fine with it. Like girl, please. Just leave them both alone and focus on the actual problem: KILLING THE EVIL DUDE.

Anyway, the rest of the plot? SO DAMM GOOD. I loved the pirate vibes, the way everyone grew into their magic, and most of all: the Pirate Queen. Adela was amazing. Every scene with her and Eira was a highlight. And I loved seeing Eira finally find where she belongs on the ship—it made me so happy for her.

The ending messed me up. I figured something like that was coming (Elise does not hold back), but ouch. I’m gonna need a little break before diving into the last book, but I’m really curious to see how it all ends.

Rating: 3.5
(Would’ve been a solid 4 or 4.5 if the romance didn’t take up so much space.)

Oh, how I had impatiently waited for this book, Heir of Frost. Without a doubt, the Air Awakens series by Elise Kova has always been one of my top favorites, so any time I get to live in that world, I'm in my happy wanderlust zone.

This is book 4 of Trail of Sorcerers, and starts immediately where book 3, A Tournament of Crowns left of. The level of anticipation in this book is high since it's the one where we as readers get to finally experience Eira meeting the Pirate Queen Adela. Who Eira is certain plays a vital role in her life, whom she'll finally get answers from and in Eira's eyes will help her find her purpose/ worth.

I'm not going to go into the details of what happens in this book,I think that's for the reader to experience since it's an adventure as usual. what i want to talk about is how much this book is a changing point in Eira's life, more so than the previous books. It's as if in the first 3 books, everything she thought she knew about herself changed or was altered by events and uncovered information. Eira then spent much of those books trying to discover who she is in a biological sense & as a sorcerer. In HOF, I felt like she realized early on that the answers she was looking for were not what was important for her personal self-discovery.

I throughly enjoyed the dynamic between Eira and Adela. Getting to know Adela in a different settingthann any of the previous books in the AA world was such a treat. And I think understanding her journey to where she is today gives insight into Eira's struggles & potential future. Adela is definitely someone I'd happily read about in her own prequel (hint hint).

Though this book was one big quest for Eira and her friends, so many little adventures help to make this book magical, but with a dash of swashbuckling and pinch of self discovery.

*Though I recieved an advanced readers copy of Heir of Frost all the thoughts, feelings and amazement are my own. 😊

Naaah... I feel like this was unnecessary book. Love triangle was annoying and really nothing else happens. Adela was the only light in this boring story.

This was disappointment since I usually love Kova's stories. The first book was so good but after that I have lost interest in this series. I just don't see a point or clear direction in this.. but I must read the last book at some point 🙈 I when I am ready to torture myself with boredom (or maybe.. maybe I get happy surprised please🙏)

This was a really fun exciting read. It picks up right where A Tournament of Crowns left off. Eira and her friends are on the run from the Pillars and the chaos that followed the coliseum explosion. They find themselves on the ship that Eira saw Ducot returning to and they find he isn’t maybe who they thought he was. I really enjoyed this pirate, sea faring type adventure. I’m probably biased but anytime a story takes place on ships and on the water I feel like it just makes the story more fun.

This book felt a bit different from the previous books but not in a bad way at all. The story so far has progressed from the original tournament and Eira has lost her powers. Her and her friends are now on the infamous pirate queen Adela’s ship and traveling in the opposite direction they want to be going. I loved the interactions between Adela and Eira. The banter and sass was so fun. The mystery surrounding Eira’s lineage and her relationship with Adela is also explored throughout the story. We also see Eira doing a different kind of self discovery. Shes not just figuring out who she is she’s learning who she is as a sorcerer too. There’s also the continued romance between Eira, Cullen, and Olivin. The romance wasn’t the main focus of the story but it always is a fun addition to the adventure.

This was a really fun fast paced story that I highly recommend. I think Elise’s writing and Eira’s story really shines in this installment. You definitely need to have read the previous books in this series to have this one make sense and I highly recommend the whole series. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

This book picked up right where we left off in Tournament of Crowns. We finally get to meet the infamous Pirate Queen, Adela. Boy, is she feisty! Eira and the crew are doing what they can to bring down the pillars, and Eira is still trying to choose between her two beau's. It was a fun open seas, pirate adventure, and I can't wait to see where she's ends up in the next book!

unnecessary love triangle like truly unnecessary
Unnecessary addition to the serie
Annoying fmc, even though I greatly enjoy her in the first book
It literally was no reason for this series to continue past three books when they could’ve ended it
between Cullen and the other guy Cullen better be who she ends up with otherwise this whole series sucks
my fav Noelle died, and I will no longer be continuing the series….

This book kind of lost me in this series… I mean we started off as magical students and we ended up pirates?

That being said, I love pirates… so even though this book didn’t really feel like it fit with the series, I still had a marginally decent and okay time with it.

I have to say though, because this whole love crap has put a huge, HUGE damper on this series for me, that I cannot (even though I called it as soon as Olvin showed up, CANNOT believe there is ANOTHER love interest in this series. Enough is enough man. I really dreaded the romance parts of this book and started skimming past them because I’m bored of this girl constantly falling in love but *not”.

I liked Adela. I wanted to love her, but I found it impossible because at the end of the day she ended up being this big ball of mush and I couldn’t take her fearsome pirate queen title seriously anymore.

Ducot and Noelle carried this book for me really. I love her character in a sea of… questionable choices from Eira.

Really though, this book doesn’t feel cohesive with the series and I really, really struggled to push through it. I’m reading the fifth, just to get my closure, and I’m going to try and get through it quickly so I can say my goodbyes to this series. I’ve loved almost everything I’ve read by Kova, so I’m sad that this series wasn’t a good fit for me.

Eira’s journey continues in Elise Kova’s “An Heir of Frost,” the fourth book in her young adult epic fantasy series, A Trial of Sorcerers.

Okay, so this book was an amazing read! I honestly think that as I read each book in this series, I become more addicted to this world that Kova has created.

As this is the fourth book in the series, I don’t want to give too much away. But what I can tell you is that once you start reading, you’ll find it nearly impossible to stop! That’s how good this book was.

This book was incredibly action-packed, and it also had many shocking plot twists. The love triangle was also very well done. All in all, I will be waiting with bated breath to see how Eira’s story ends!

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Urgh, how can you do this, Elise Kova? Killing off a main character again?! I was already devastated when Marcus died in the first book, but now Noelle? I absolutely loved her character’s build-up—there was something so relatable about her. I was so invested in her relationship with Ducot and was rooting for their story to unfold.

To think we almost lost both Cullen and Noelle towards the end, only for them to make it through—just for her loss to blindside us like that. I’m so conflicted and heartbroken by this twist. My heart is still wrenching.

That said, the way you painted Eira’s grief was incredibly powerful. I could feel every ounce of her pain through your words, and it hit so hard. Despite everything, I’m still eager to pick up the fifth book and see how the story continues. This series has truly been gripping!

I am not surprised at all that this book was amazing. Each book in The Trial of Sorcerers series has been epic and adventurous and entertaining. The characters, the stories, the magic system, each part of this book blends perfectly together for an enchanting tale.

I loved finally getting Adela and Eira together and reading their relationship develop. While this book was brilliant, it was also heart wrenching. I need the next book immediately.

5 Stars

I have read and adored all of the Air Awakens books and off shoot series and still Elise Kova manages to make me addicted to each book and story. An Heir of Frost was certainly no exception.

This series is very complex and is linked to two previous series so I won't even try to begin to explain it. What I will say is that if you enjoy magic, action, danger, adventure and romance, then you will love the books based in this world.
The different types of magic continue to wow me in every book and Kova manages to somehow bring new magical ideas to the story every time. It is such a big part of these books and it is done with such imagination.
The worldbuilding is utterly perfect and I feel I know this world back to front now. There is so much detail and I love the additional layers added in each new story. Elise Kova somehow keeps it all new and exciting each time.

The characters are excellent. The lead in this series is Eira, who can manipulate water. She has had a tough upbringing and although she is incredibly strong, powerful and clever, she also doubts herself like anyone else and worries over so much. At times it feels like she has the weight of the world on her shoulders and it all makes her feel relatable and realistic.
All of the other side characters add so much to the series including humour, romance and excitement. I adore this crew and I can't wait to read the final book in this series.

Elise Kova is one of my favourite fantasy writers and her words always whisk me away into her worlds. I was addicted from the first word to the last which is probably why I read it in a day! I simply couldn't put it down!

Overall, a great installment in this series and pne that has not only set up the final book perfectly but also stands alone as a brilliant story on its own. Highly addictive and I couldn't recommend these series more.

Please note that I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

So much of these books are great, but the love triangle is dragging me down. I just can’t forgive Cullen the way that Eira can. I am very curious to see how it’s all going to play out in the end. I would actually support her being a badass pirate on her own at this point.

I loved every single moment of this beautifully covered book that has stolen my heart. I absolutely loved this unputdownable tome. The foreshadowing was fabulous, and at the very end, I was positively giddy with what is yet to come. Elise Kova is a master magician with words, and I'll gladly read any tale she releases.

How is this the best book in the series so far!? Honestly, that answer is multifaceted. We get to meet Adela, and that dear readers is every bit and frustrating and magical, as you've probably imagined it. We see epic levels of character growth that just make you want to stand up and cheer. The crew grows closer, and the bond between them becomes unbreakable.

And can we just talk about how delicious the love triangle is!? And why oh why must she choose!? Girl, enjoy them both!! Because I'm living vicariously through you.

I can't wait for the series conclusion because Eira has truly embraced who she is and is a force to be reckoned with. Watch out baddies, she’s coming for you.

5⭐️ Excellent! The series is gripping - loved it. I don’t typically read YA books, but this series impresses me.

… ice and fire, strength, passion, anger, loss, and self discovery. Eira’s epic journey for justice in an unjust world, amplified and supported by her chosen family, challenges her sense of trust and exposes her to the sacrifices of true leadership.

I can’t wait for book 5!!

I have loved Elise Kova’s writing style ever since first opening one of her books and I fell in love with this world she created when reading Air Awakens in 2021. It will also always be something I’ll write in every review for her books: HER WRITING IS AMAZING! It just drags you in and makes you continue on reading whatever one of her books is in your hands!

The cliffhanger and the end of book three, well damn! I have waited for over a year to continue this story and was everything I hoped for! Eira losing her powers and suddenly standing before Adela, yes! I was hyped and so wanted to learn if Adela was indeed her mother or not!

The plot was expected, with Eira trying to get her powers back, but I loved the way the story progressed and the growth the characters went through! The addition of Adela as a new character in this story also made for an interesting new dynamic!

I wanted Eira to grow more in the last book and this book really brought the character growth I was hoping for! I just love how she became less reckless and really understood how her actions could have consequences for all her loved ones and friends. She grew mature and really into herself while shadowing Adela. It felt like she really found her calling, which I just found amazing to see! I also really loved Adela! She is honestly quite two faced, trying to seem touch (well, she is, she’s damn strong!) but she felt so soft on the insight! Like a marshmallow!

After Cullen betraying her with his engagement and Olivin being thrown into the mix, of course a love triangle happens. While I’m not the biggest fan of them, I liked how this one played out. I especially liked how Eira didn’t string them along as often happens, she told both of them she didn’t know what she felt about them both! Go communication! I also still very much have a preference for who I hope she’ll end up with, which is the same person I rooted for after book three!

We should know by now how Elise Kova’s books end in series: with cliff-hangers, and damn, this one had me in tears T_T! I knew something was coming, but I honestly did not expect it to be this big T_T! Time to wait another year to finally read the conclusion of this amazing series!

Overall, An Heir of Frost was an amazing book and I honestly believe it is my favourite book in the series as of right now!

Thank you to the author for an eARC copy of this book. Receiving an ARC in no way influenced my thoughts or feelings in this review.

Another insanely good book from Elise. This is the fourth book in the series, and it's held strong the whole way through. Eira has grown so much as a character, along with all her friends, and I loved the introduction of the new players with Adela and her crew. I think this book was an important turning point for Eira's character, and I can't wait to see how everything wraps up in the final book.
There was a lot of character development in the first part of the book, with all the action really occurring in the last 20% or so, but you really don't feel like it's out of balance. Everything blends together so seamlessly in the story.
The writing is very well done, with great continuity between the books. The characters are well developed and likable. I think Adela is my favorite new addition, and I really hope we get to see more of her in the future.
I can't express how much I recommend this series, whether you've read the rest of the air awakens series or not.
