Howl for the Gargoyle

Rate this book
Hannah never wanted to be a werewolf. After over thirty years as a human, she finds her new life on the other side of the species line too full of sudden changes. Especially when those changes risk her band's chance at a world tour. Desperate for a way to slake the cravings and soothe the restless anger that arrives every month like clockwork, Hannah takes the advice of a friend and books a night with the Monster Smash Agency. In spite of being made of stone, Rafe is losing his touch. After years of rough work, he's starting to feel the grind. Sturdy and nearly indestructible, gargoyles can take a lot, but Rafe is pretty sure he can't take losing any more of his clients. Not if he wants to keep his job with MSA. Hannah and Rafe's partnership ought to be practical, but their chemistry carves a new path. This werewolf is unlike any client Rafe has worked with yet, and he's determined to make her howl his name.

i can't describe to you the way i dropped EVERYTHING, like literally mid-sentence stopped what i was doing, to buy this book when my best friend said it had come out this week. this sequel was HIGHLY anticipated because games with an orc is one of my top books of the year, and i read this in two sittings.

i really liked the way these characters were compatible! both had good personalities and the approach to their relationship was both wholesome and horny.

but this wasn't my exact cup of tea and some of the plot was a bit weak to me, like the sideplot that the fmc was in a band, miscommunication trope, and a couple other things.

the one mothman book i've read was kinda cringe so honestly i don't have the *highest* hopes for the next one in this series, but kathryn moon is such an auto-buy author that even if i end up giving her books three stars, it means i still flew through them!

Oh. My. God. I loved EVERYTHING about this book. It had the perfect balance of growth, plot, and smut. The depiction of depression and PTSD was spot on. I feel like it’s easy to forget the irritability plays a major part in depression. Yes, people are sad and isolate and have some inertia, but also are often quick to feel frustrated. It is hard to get out of a rut like that, even if you have a support system in place. Hannah was traumatized and seeking to have control in whatever ways she could and terrified of hurting someone the way she got hurt. Rafe was sweet and in a rut as a sex worker, where he wanted to not be hurt so much and had lost his joy. Hannah was exactly the caring but still dominant touch he needed. He helped her feel safe and gain confidence that she was lacking with his knowledge and patience. I absolutely loved that they become each other’s safe spaces. I also loved that Hannah still did work on herself outside of her time with Rafe. It wasn’t a fast process, but it was authentic and beautiful.

Spice: 5/5

SPOILERS IN TRIGGER WARNINGS

I enjoyed Howl for the Gargoyle SO MUCH. I mean, a werewolf rockstar x gargoyle sex worker?? 🤩

Hannah and Rafe deserve everything 🥹 Hannah went through so much, and getting to read about her progress, from being afraid of hurting her partners, to feeling comfortable in her own skin with Rafe.

Rafe was the cutest gargoyle I've ever read about. He was so understanding with Hannah and her needs. Same goes for Hannah with Rafe, ensuring he would finish every time with her since gargoyles tend to take longer to finish 😏 Their chemistry is off the charts and so satisfying. This book had the perfect mix of sweetness and spiciness.

I'm really intrigued to see what Ms Moon has for our mothman Elias in the future 👀

The first 2/3 of this book was really good. I could feel their chemistry and I liked how individual they both felt. I really appreciated how the FMC was comfortable in her sexuality and didn’t shy away from what she wanted. She was struggling with being a newly turned werewolf and it was admirable to see her fight to stay who she was while trying to accept who she has become. The MMC was also great. He was a fun balance of dominant and submissive. He was supportive of the FMC and had some dorky moments that felt endearing. It was harder to feel connected to him when most of the time we got to see him was during one of their sessions where he was being to have sex with her so it was hard to tell if he was being genuine.

The last bit of the story fizzled out for me. Although I would say their connection never hit boiling point, it was heating up at the story progressed, only to settle to lukewarm at its peak. It was like they were going along with the idea and honestly, it was hard to feel their emotional connection that way. They were more physically compatible and felt like friends outside of that. There was never much talk about feelings or personal matters whatsoever. It was hard when most of the time she was paying him for his time so it was a completely different power dynamic than when they were genuinely together. I wish we got to see more of their dynamic afterwards and how they settled as a couple.

Warning to those that it may affect (and slight spoiler warning):

The MMC is a sex worker and continues his job throughout the majority of the book even after the main couple has been intimate multiple times and feeling are evident. I’m not a big fan when either character has any sort of intimacy with someone else after their love interest is in the picture so this wasn’t my favourite aspect of the story but it surprisingly didn’t bother me as much as I expected. I think what helped was knowing the FMC was okay with it so it didn’t feel like a betrayal or anything negative, it was just his job. Also, there is never any on page of this and it’s spoken more in an abstract way, although he does mention his past clients a few times. I still think it’s good to know going into the story though if this is a deal breaker for you.

A female werewolf singer overcoming a trauma + a male gargoyle sex worker looking for more than a quick time??? Say less, Kathryn! I enjoyed this a lot.

Plot/Pacing: ★★★★
Steamy romance: ★★★★
Character growth: ★★★★★

This book is the second in the Monster Smash Agency series. If you've not read the first one, Games with the Orc , I do recommend starting there! These are mostly standalones, but I loved the first one and it's worth a read before diving into this second book.

Hannah is going through it, guys. She's a newly turned werewolf, and her turning was both a traumatizing assault against her will and also a personal tragedy—she's a vegetarian dealing with werewolf meat cravings, she's a singer confronted with a totally different werewolf-tinged vocal range, and she's also a prideful person with a need for control who... no longer has that control.

So when her werewolf support group sponsor, Theo, brings her home to discuss how Hannah's doing with his wife, Natalie, it's to Hannah's great surprise that Natalie suggests... hiring a sex worker. Of the non-human variety.

Hannah needs to vent out her need for aggression, her increased need for physical touch and sex, and her general non-humanness in a safe space and in a safe and consensual way. But she also wants someone who can talk to her, seduce her, and be soft for her like she used to be before she was turned. What better way to do all of that then to hire a professional who can't be harmed because they're more durable than Hannah??

(Guys, this is a steamy/smut monster romance. The logic is logic-ing in this trope.)

Rafe is a gargoyle working for the Monster Smash Agency, a discrete sex worker service that pairs monster species with others for the purposes of safe and consensual good times. Because he's a gargoyle with a very thick skin—literally, it can turn to stony texture—he's always the one first up to bat with the rougher clients. The real rough ones. (Rafe's getting tired of being the punching bag for everyone, but he's not sure that's relevant.)

Hannah's first experience with the agency pairs her with Rafe, our hardy gargoyle. And their time together turns out to be exactly what the other one's needed all along...

Y'all, when I tell you I'd read Kathryn Moon's shopping list, I mean that with sincerity. Her stories, her romances, her overall commitment to the smut without it eclipsing all plot and logic... It's a good mix for my personal reading tastes. I obviously jumped at the chance to review this early copy of Howl for the Gargoyle.

Pick up this book for the monster good times, stay for the emotionally sweet healing journey for two souls just looking for a soft and welcoming place to land. This smutty romance was a lot more wholesome than I was expecting, and it went to some places that I've not yet seen from my personal werewolf/monster readings. I really enjoyed seeing a female main character in this space who is ALSO a monster species, as it's usually a human woman paired with a monster other. And the power dynamic for this pairing was unique too... Lots of worthwhile points in this one for us trope fans to try out!

Thank you to the author for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

3.4 stars.

Kathryn Moon writes intriguing characters. And that's really why I kept reading this book. Both Hannah and Rafe are well-rounded, beautifully described and broken people who end up being a perfect fit for each other.

Hannah is afraid of herself after being turned into a werewolf in a brutal attack. She's a singer who has lost her (creative) voice. She needs a safe space where she can learn to be herself and a safe person who accepts her for who she is now and helps her see herself in a better light.

I liked her journey a lot. By the end, she's taking risks and letting her voice howl (literally).

However, the portrayal of sex work and the trauma that Rafe experienced as a sex worker, really dragged this book down!

Throughout the book and the descriptions of 🌶️, it's obvious that Rafe is reliving some trauma from other client partners who abused him. He's a gargoyle so he's been matched with people who want a sturdy partner they can't harm long term. Unfortunately, he hasn't told anyone that they keep on hurting him pretty badly and he's not okay. Thankfully, there's a time where he tells his boss that he doesn't want to be hurt anymore. I'm glad he finally learned to speak up... but it was really not okay how long it went on.

Add to that, I dislike the sex work thing in general. It's a terribly background for a romance because the sex worker is having sex with multiple partners after our main characters meet. It also leaves him in a really vulnerable position when they decide to get together. He no longer has a job.

His situation at the end is more typical of a woman in that he's very dependent on his partner for support.

At the very end, we see him kinda getting a job as a chef and it didn't feel quite right. He's a great cook but there must have been a reason he was doing sex work rather than cooking, but it's not addressed.

As much as I loved the characters, the relationship development was way too shallow.

When they realize they're mates, they don't talk. They just have sex.

So... I kinda liked it but also this book made me sad and grossed out

I enjoyed reading this one! It was a good start to MFF. Giving it a 4 out of 5 because there were a lot of corny lines/ dialogue that genuinely made me have to pause for a bit. Excited for the next read!

A lovely read! I adored the characters and their switchy and adorable dynamic!

This book could for sure have been a lot more angsty and gritty, since both fmc and mmc is carrying some hard core trauma, but I get that the tone of the series is more lighthearted.

Hannah, a thirty-something-year-old, never envisioned not being human. Her sudden change into a werewolf and the potential risks to her band’s world tour are overwhelming. To manage her full moon cravings and the restless anger she’s been feeling, Hannah follows a friend’s advice and books with Monster Smash Agency to find a partner that she won’t break. In comes Rafe, a gargoyle who is nearly indestructible and is desperate to keep his job. The two partner up and the ease they feel around each other ends up taking them on a new path that toes the line that a client should have with the person they’ve hired.

She'd let go of everything, all her fear and shame and self-disgust—let go of everything but me.

Kathryn Moon does it yet again and I am so glad that I rang in 2024 with Hannah and Rafe's story. The Monster Smash Agency series might be one of my favorites that I've ever read. I love the way that Kathryn Moon essentially tweaked our world to add in the monsters in such a flawless, real-feeling sort of way. I don't know how else to describe it other than a magical monster romance with beautiful storytelling and drool-worthy spice featuring characters you cannot help but love.

This story, so far at least, has been my favorite.

Hannah's story is heartbreaking but written in a beautiful way that felt reminiscent of how you would see an assault written in other books so be mindful when you dive in. There aren't any super descriptive scenes going into detail about how she was turned into a werewolf but it's mentioned. I think I just felt more of it with how those around her talk about it and how she heals throughout the story and finds herself again. There was one scene specifically with a character that isn't one of the main ones that had me sobbing because it was so powerful. "I'd rather have you at your worst than not have you here at all." Immediately followed up with a conversation that felt like one of the most important ones in the book regarding Hannah as a character and the path that she ultimately takes in learning about this new version of herself that she didn't consent to become.

I really loved the fact that she wasn't like your stereotypical werewolf. If that makes sense. She had opposing things about her that I found really refreshing and Hannah was honestly just so easy to love and root for. I think she's going to be a character whose story sticks with me for a really long time and I'm happy to hold her there in my heart.

I absolutely love Rafe. The way he interacted with Hannah throughout the entire book, not trying to solve any of her issues but just being there to show her that she had it in her to do whatever she needed to do and that she was stronger and more deserving than she thinks that she is. I just have a really soft spot for MMCs that are like this so I was bound to fall head over heels for him as the love interest. I think the way that these two interacted with each other was just really refreshing and the chemistry was just so good with a whole lot of great banter back and forth throughout the entire story.

Their story was absolutely beautiful and I'm definitely going to be thinking about this book throughout the rest of the year. Don't be surprised if it ends up on my favorites list for 2024. I cannot wait to read the next one and I'm especially excited for the potential of who it might be involving because of some of the last lines in the book. I would love to start off every single year for the rest of forever by reading a Monster Smash Agency book first thing because they are always phenomenal and set me up for a great year.

- overcoming trauma
- food as a love language
- soft dom fmc
- hurt/comfort
- found family
- marathon spicy time
- self rediscovery
- embracing your inner beast
- two monsters falling in love

for me 2.75 at most .. I did not enjoy this but let me explain

Okay first and foremost it’s well written and well edited.

However, I didn’t care about any of them. I actually found myself less and less interested the further I got in. It’s just not as good as her other books and overall I just got to 27% before I said whilst I love Kathryn’s work I am not suffering through what I don’t enjoy.

So no I am not giving it a terrible star rating just average because people either really like it or just don’t vibe with it. I honestly think it was the start we just are dropped in and I did not like Hannah AT ALL.

Kathryn Moon continues to write some of the best monster romances out there and this book is another instant favourite. Howl for the Gargoyle was heartwarming and comforting while also packing lots of heat.

Look, you already know that a Kathryn Moon book is going to be fantastic. Her work has healing, comfort, vulnerability, found family and seggs positivity. And this book has all those things. But it's also about learning who you are as a person and the bravery to explore those needs. It's about coming to terms with your past so you can build future happiness. And it's about exploring what you need physically to be satisfied in a relationship.

And on top of all of that awesomeness, this book is HOT. Like, super hot. The spice was just so good! It was a perfect balance to a plot that explored some heavier moments. And not only did HftG bring the heat, it had moments of levity mixed in with the more intense moments.

This book is a perfect read for anyone who loves a balance of plot and spice, and it is everything we love about Kathryn Moon and the amazing worlds she creates.

I love love loved this. As Danelle said I would 🤣

I think why I loved this so much was that the FMC Hannah was trying to figure out herself in her new life as a werewolf, dealing with her band, her new werewolf "cravings" and just coming to terms with it all. She is such a strong and powerful FMC not only physically, but mentally. And Rafe the gargoyle MMC learning his boundaries and what he wants while helping Hannah with hers *chefs kiss*.

I cannot wait for the next book!

Tropes:
~monster romance (gargoyle x werewolf)
~grumpy x sunshine
~sex worker hero
~rock star heroine
~big city romance
~fated mates
~cinnamon roll hero

This one was so cute! Which feels strange to say about a book that is mostly smut, but Kathryn Moon always finds a way to add in the feels! The heroine, Hannah, was recently turned into a werewolf against her will, and her attacker has not yet been caught. She's struggling to accept this new part of herself and the changes that occur around the full moon. Due to her strength and increase in hormones, she's afraid that she'll hurt human men, so goes to a monster brothel where she's paired up with a gargoyle named Rafe. Since gargoyles are made of tougher stuff (literally), he tends to be paired with clients who are rougher in the sack, and so is a perfect match for Hannah's werewolf side. However, Hannah doesn't want to hurt Rafe and instead the two navigate how to handle her werewolf instincts in an enjoyable way for both of them.

I was impressed that despite this being very smut-focused, we still got to know the two characters well, and I really felt for them. Hannah because of her struggle to cope with the aftermath of her assault, and Rafe because at the start of the novel he's realizing that he doesn't actually enjoy constantly being a punching bag for clients and wants more. I felt so bad for him when he said how just because he physically is impenetrable and can't be wounded, that doesn't mean that he can't fully feel the pain of someone trying to injure him. Watching them both learn to relax and have fun with sex again was a beautiful (and steamy) journey!

This was so cute and swoony. I love Kathryn Moon's writing, and I love the wholesome world and friendships she's created with the first two books in this series. I didn't mention this in my review of Games with the Orc, but I also really enjoy how much she weaves cultural elements or certain traits specific to each monster species - like Orcs being very earthy and using slang related to trees, or Gargoyles' physiology being very slow, and having them prefer routine and steadiness.

Rafe and Hannah were so sweet and so perfect for each other. I didn't really care about Hannah being in a band or the band gaining fame because I don't really like "celebrity" romance books, but the plot is really not about whether the band becomes famous, so it didn't bother me much.

The whole cast of characters was really fun and supportive, and they feel pretty darn fleshed out for a book series with so much smut.

This was so cute and lovely and hot 🥲 the epilogue was adorable and wrapped it all up nicely.

Of Miss Moon's work, I've only read this series and the Tempting Monsters series and I loved seeing her write a FMC who IS a monster!! (And not just a pretty one like a nymph or witch or something but like a BEAST-don't get me wrong I love those guys too!!)
I adore the platonic friendships that are building between these couples and friends and just ugh these books are so fun to read.

I love this world and can't wait for the next one on the Mothman!! (My favourite cryptid!!) Eeee!

I will gobble up anything Kathryn Moon writes like a little gremlin, she's so fucking incredible and never misses! Easily my favorite monster romance writer- her books are sexy and filthy and SO exactly my ID, but she's also really sensitive to the ways that the monster romance subgenre can reinforce weird gender/sexuality shit, and subverts all of that in a way that feels really thoughtful and safe to me as a queer reader. I love her and this book so so much!!! KM you will always be famous

I wanted to like this one as much as Games with the Orc. That being said, while that isn’t the case, this was still a fun read.

I loved Hannah and Rafe. Their relationship was so cute, and I liked that they got kinky. Hannah’s healing from the trauma she experienced of becoming a werewolf was heartbreaking yet heartwarming to follow, and Rafe realizing his ability to set boundaries was gratifying. That being said, though, I do wish more of their relationship had showed us the fluff and the communication between them, like them getting to know their likes and dislikes outside of sex. Because while I enjoyed the smut in this book, there was so much of it that was honestly a little stale after a bit. This was exacerbated by the plot situations.

Plot-wise, I think this book is a little flimsy. There are three plotlines in here, 1 main and 2 subplots: Hannah’s and Rafe’s relationship, Hannah’s band being in danger of losing their tour, and the werewolf that turned Hannah, respectively. The first two plots were good; the relationship is the whole part of the book, but the band plotline felt a bit too weak for me. Even more underwhelming was the subplot with Hannah’s attacker. This was an interesting development, definitely raising the stakes, but it came in too late in the book and therefore felt rushed.

The dialogue was cringey for me at points. I’d be comfortable if I never heard the phrase “I caught big feels” ever again.

Overall, I loved the two characters and the story, because it was so sweet and very intense by way of healing from trauma. I also have to say that I enjoyed the chase scene where SHE chased HIM.

It was cute. I liked that there was more character plot other than just them fucking. It made me finish the book and stay more engaged in what was happening.

I don’t want read the first one in the series cause it does seem to be only about the main couples relationship and nah

Oh and the werewolf part was kind of weird imo

The book also had like zero world building which was very annoying but not a dealbreaker for my current reading mood.

This series is a prime example of why I don’t tell people what I’m reading currently when they ask me. Sometimes a little white lie of whatever classic novel I can think of in the moment never hurt anybody.

This was great. I like the series a lot, although I liked book one more. Maybe it was just more to my tastes. The couple subplots were…interesting at best but overall a great cozy read.
