Zájem českého člověka o rusalky je spontánní a letitý. Rusalky uctíval za dob pohanských, nezradil je ani v asketickém středověku, kochal se jimi za renesance a ony mu na oplátku zpříjemňovaly nekonečně se vlekoucí čas pobělohorského temna. Není divu, že od prvních záblesků nové doby obrozenské naši buditelé tak často hovořili o těchto něžných a křehkých bytostech našich vod a mokřadních luk (P. J. Šafařík, O Rusalkách či J. Štěpán, Pozůstatky rusadelních svátků v Čechách). Jejich průkopnická práce byla dovršena v druhé polovině minulého století syntetickým dílem Máchalovým. Dnešním početným zájemcům o vodní panny ovšem tyto klasické, dnes však přece jen zastaralé studie dávno nemohou stačit. V Klíči k určování rusalek najde proto český zájemce první moderní a spolehlivou příručku, která mu při setkání s rusalkou poskytne dobrou radu. Přejeme našemu čtenáři, aby mu Úvod do naiadologie umožnil navázat s vodními pannami styk na skutečně vysoké úrovni a aby ho rusalky inspirovaly k tak vynikajícím tvůrčím výbojům, jako se to před sto lety stalo Antonínu Dvořákovi.

Enn Vetemaa (nar. 1939), estonský naiadolog světového jména, se svému koníčku věnuje od mládí, a důkladně. Vystudoval kvůli němu chemii na tallinnském polytechnickém institutu, poté studoval na tallinnské konzervatoři, odpovědi na palčivé otázky, které ho trápily, hledal v redakci časopisu Otázky a odpovědi (Küsimused ja vastused), vydělával si prostředky na nákladný výzkum v terénu (viz kapitola o kroužkování rusalek) literární prací všeho druhu. Psal verše, malé romány (na větší nebyl čas) i divadelní hry. Takového ho známe i my – jako básníka ze slovenské antologie Osud motýľa, jako prozaika z výborů Rekviem pro foukací harmoniku a Snovači stříbrných snů, z her Svatá Zuzana aneb Škola mistrů a Večeře pro pět. Tentokrát (konečně) se českému čtenáři představuje v oblasti, která je mu nejvlastnější – jako odborník na vodní panny.

A most hilarious book, which pretends to be a biological field guide to the mermaid fauna of Estonia, though the factuality is broken up by add-ins of subjective reflections, narrations of encounters with mermaids and expressions of hopes on the future progresses of mermaidology.
Interestingly Estonian mermaids don't have fishtails, but legs. (Fishtailed mermaids occasionally may appear in Estonia, but they are usually visitors from Scandinavia or Germany.) Estonian mermaids can be classified into the groups of beautfully-haired ones, loud-throated ones, bare-tittied ones etc., with subclasses like the "minilesbian sniveller", the "green-haired coquette" or the "plump tomboyish" mermaid. Beyond the mere jocular of these ideas, there's satire in the tone, which always pretends to hold a positivistic attitude towards the researched objects, but which cannot hide the underlying drives of libido.
The code switching between pseudo-scientific, folkloristic, anecodic, historic modes of telling is quite funny, but if the book came without its illustrations, I wouldn't assign more than three stars to it. The real fun comes in with Kat Menschik's pictures, which are also not very noteworthy by themselves - woodcut-like black-and-white drawings with a sketchy, a bit carelessly drawn outlook. What makes the combination really outstanding is the fact that the pictures are actually *not* illustrations. In 80% of cases the reader needs to stop and think about the relation of the picture and the surrounding text, because there's no 1-on-1 correspondence. The second aspect that makes them so funny is the triviality of many of the pictures. Many pictures are of every-day items that every body knows very well about. The text mentions that a mermaid researcher should always bring a notebook to the field - and the illustrations show a typewriter and a pencil, with a caption of "diverse writing utensils". Blimey, so that's the way a pencil looks like? One page has four little pictures, in this sequence: an "aging mollusk", a "handbag suitable for going out", a "piece of strawberry cake" and a "terrarium with several strata of rock bed". On pages like these the book fulfills Lautréamont's famous wish of a chance meeting of sewing machine and umbrella on a dissecting table. At another point you open an inlay page with colour illustrations, where the title promises to show you a mermaid of the type "child-loving sniveller", and what you get is a picture of Holy Mary with her baby.

Skoro celou dobu jsem pochybovala, že ten spisovatel skutečně existuje. Myslela jsem, že je to nějaký "Cimrman". Obzvlášť, když v českém překladu je uvedeno, že překladatel si může uzpůsobit text k místním poměrům, což v se v češtině dobře prodařilo.
Teprve poté, co jsem si našla, jaké další knihy Vladimír Macura překládal, jsem uvěřila, že je to skutečný překladatel z estonštiny a tedy pravděpodobně i Enn Vetemaa existoval. I když v knize je psáno, že se narodil roku 1939, na wikipedii i jinde se píše 1936...
Když jsem si ale ujasnila, že tedy věřím v existenci spisovatele, byl od toho už jen krůček, nechat se přesvědčit, že existují rusalky.
Kniha vykazuje jasné znaky, že oba pánové (spisovatel i překladatel) milují ženy všech tvarů a barev. Láskyplně a poeticky dokážou popsat dokonce i zpěvy hubatky přisprostlé.
Můj původní záměr byl knihu přečíst a potom poslat dál. Ale zdá se, že si ji nechám. A někdy do ní jen tak nahlédnu například pro inspiraci na nějakou peprnou vábicí větu...
Co tu prcínkuješ, ty symfonie nedokončená! Do pasťáku s nedovzdělanými paleobotaniky! Tě srovnám! Marihuááána!

Heute stelle ich euch mal ein ganz besonderes Buch vor. So etwas zieht selten bei mir ein. Es ist nach 20 Jahren neu aufgelegt worden. Es kommt aus Island und ist 1983 dort und 1985 in Deutschland zum ersten Mal erschienen. Es ist eine Art Lexikon, auf jeden Fall aber ein Bestimmungsbuch. Es ist das erste Buch, das @kat illustriert hat. Und es handelt von Nixen.

Ich würde mich jetzt nicht als Spezialistin auf dem Gebiet der Fabelwesen bezeichnen, aber als ich dieses Buch aufschlug und es zum ersten Mal durchblätterte war ich gefesselt von der Aufmachung dieses Werks. Sehr ernsthaft geht der Autor, der 2017 starb, an die Najadologie heran. Er ist Este und Nixen sind bekanntlich dort beheimatet- so lässt er uns zumindest glauben! Akribisch trägt er alle Details zusammen. Von der schematischen Darstellung der Nixenhäufigkeit in Estland, den Utensilien, die man als Nixenforscher braucht bis zur Farbtafeln der Haarfarben erfahren wir alles, was mit dieser besonderen Wissenschaft zusammenhängt. Der große Hauptteil liegt aber in der Bestimmung der einzelnen Arten: Die Schönhaarige findet hier genauso einen Platz, wie die nackttittige Wuchtbrumme, die waschversessene Rubbelfee, die grünhaarige Kokette, die Lauthalsige und die kinderliebende Heulsuse. Was sofort auffällt ist die unendlich scheinende Fantasie, sowohl des Autors wie auch der Illustratorin.
Kat Menschiks Zeichnungen sind noch etwas rudimentär und ungeschliffen. Es fällt aber sofort der besondere Stil ins Auge, der ihr zu eigen ist. Das Auge hat hier viel zu tun und ich hab mich sehr ergötzt an der Vielfalt, die dieses Werk uns serviert. Es gibt in der Mitte des Buches 16 Farbtafeln, doch die anderen 648 naturwissenschaftlichen, geographischen und najadologischen. Abbildungen sind schwarz-weiß.

Dies ist kein Buch, was man mal einfach so hintereinander wegliest, sondern ein Werk, dass man immer wieder zur Hand nehmen möchte, um darin zu blättern, zu versinken und der Realität zu entfliehen.

fasst nochmal unnachahmlich zusammen, welche Quintessenz die Zeichnungen von Kat Menschik ausstrahlen.

Detailverliebt geschrieben und gezeichnet, nimmt uns dieses einzigartige Buch gefangen. Ich empfehle es allen, die auf der Suche nach etwas ganz Besonderem sind.

Vetemaa nimmt das Konzept einer wissenschaftlichen Abhandlung etwas zu ernst, das macht das Lesen stellenweise etwas langatmig. Man merkt außerdem, dass das Werk schon etwas älter ist.
Immerhin gibt es zahlreiche Illustrationen von Kat Menschik. Die passen nicht immer zum Inhalt und sind auch nicht immer "schön", aber sie lockern das Ganze auf.
