Scott Mariani offers up another wonderful early story about his strong-willed protagonist, Ben Hope, in this short piece. After the traumatic kidnapping of her son by a crazed ex-husband, Jessica Hunter looks to Ben Hope for some answers. While the police are working to find Carl, they have been unable to find any solid leads, forcing Hope to take measures into his own hands. While poking around, Hope is able to find some definite clues that point to the mindset of Drew Hunter, though nothing seems to match the man who appeared at the family home. In a case that takes him to Italy and eventually the Principality of Monaco, Hope chases down leads left by, of all people, Carl. What he finds is a narrative that differs greatly from a crazed father trying to capture his son for his own. Instead, there seems to be a degree of trying to save his son from a clueless mother and a new step-father who is not the doting parental figure he tries to portray. With Carl found, the story takes a new turn and twists in ways that will force Ben Hope to show just how sharp his former-SAS skills can be after retiring. A well-paced piece that will appeal to Ben Hope fans and new series readers (such as myself) alike!

I have read three short stories to commence by Ben Hope binge read and I have a good sense of the man, up to now. Gritty and full of pep, Hope seeks to balance the world after seeing some of the worse aspects in his time with the SAS. However, not only does Hope pack some military might, but also a keen eye for sleuthing, which is exemplified here in spades. What lies ahead for the full-blown novels, I have no idea, but if Hope is as exciting there as he has been here, I know I am in for a wonderful ride. The story seems to be one that has two portions, the early stage that develops as the reader would expect, but then there is another, found when a twist falls into place. That twist takes the narrative and the theme in an entirely new direction and keeps the reader from being able to predict things until the very end. That Hope is a kidnap and ransom specialist proves only to be part of the alluring equation in this piece, as Mariani offers up his protagonist’s full skill set to keep the narrative clipping along. I can only hope that there will be more of this determination as the series develops. I am ready to dive in to the full-length novels to see where they will take me.

Kudos, Mr. Mariani for keeping me curious and ready to explore the world of Ben Hope. I have heard much about this series and can only hope (pun intended) that things progress as nicely as they have up to this point.

Scary but very good

Who wants to think that people can be so inhuman? Sad thing is that they can be. Excellent story, well plotted. A warning, it does deal with hurting children, though it is all “off stage” and there are several “shoot ‘em up” scenes, but I did enjoy it. <><

3.5 stars

I only gave this 3.5 stars due to the length of the story. It was a very good book nevertheless and contained all the elements that I've come to expect from a Scott Mariani book. I recommend all fans of tgis author read this.

Bring Him Back By Scott Mariani

What we have here is another wonderful short set before book one in the series and I have to say this is an absolute banger.
Hope is hired to find a missing child by a distraught Mother and new boyfriend only to find that all things are not as they would appear and before long Hope is up to his neck in blood and guts and not all his own.
The quality of the writing is excellent and the story is just great to be able to gram so much into a novella is just outstanding.
I read this in one sitting and was so sad when I came to the end of the book.
I have now read all of Hopes prequals and are now about to start the first book in the series if the shorts are anything to go by I am in for a real treat.
If you are fan of Lee Child, Matt Hilton, Stephen Leather then these books are for you.

Well worth your time and hard-earned cash.

Ben's dark humour is everything, I love it. Maaybe it reminds me of mine. I really have a lot of fun reading these books, I totally enjoy them. Scott Mariani's books are full of action and mystery, it's like a film but ten times better. Fortunately, there are no films based on Ben Hope series. I do think films do us a lot of harm by taking our opportunity to imagine things ourselves. Yeah, so people don't have a very good imagination but others have and enjoy books much more. However, when there's a film adaptation, you're declined the chance to imagine it your way in your head and that's only the version of one person, a bit limited and not fully. So, always choose the book, please.
P.S. I highly recommend you the series Ben Hope!

Brilliant as always

I have been a Ben Hope lover for a long time having read all the other books before i knew about this (and another) early edition. Although i think the more well known books are, in my opinion, more gripping and exciting, this book is still extremely good. I will always be amazed on how most (and i imagine all the other books) are based around true facts, incidents and myths, which makes these books even better. Keep reading the Ben Hope series and he will suck you in to caring, striving, laughing and crying with him. Ben is the type of hero we need in real life and Scott Mariani is a genius at being able to keep such a bold and brave character addictive at 17 books!

Page Turner

I gave this book a 5 star because it keeps you guessing as you turn the pages waiting for the next twist and turn and keeps you wondering can things like this really happen and about things that the human brain is capable of and the lengths people will go to to abuse it.

Frightening premise

And all too real as it calls to mind the horror of the Natzis and their experiments. Having read this series out of sequence I did I not find this story quite measures up to the others. However, I do wish the author would continue the practice of noting what is fact vs fictional.

After quitting the SAS Ben Hope uses his skills to rescue the kidnapped victims. He gets into case of a small kid kidnapped by his own father. In the pursuit of looking for the kid, Ben comes to know the real picture and how he was tricked. This novella is packed with typical Ben Hope style actions and twists.

Top marks

Having read all of the Ben Hope books, I knew and thoroughly enjoyed each one in turn. Passenger 13 and Bring Him Back, are two books that I hadn't read. Knowing what Ben did after he left the army but not fully understanding until reading the prequels, as we call them, I was to be engaged and engrossed. Scott knows his work, and he is one of my favourite authors.

A good twist

I rated 4star as I felt it ended rather abrupt. Although the story had finished an epilogue could have been added. E.g. Return to his mother and an explanation detailing his unique abilities and to keep him safe.
Saying that I would as with all Ben Hope books highly recommend

I am trying to read the Ben Hope books in order, but I did not enjoy this as much as #0.5. Not enough reference to the SAS days and history (come on, this man was a Major in the SAS!) and a bit of a far fetched theme with children with ESP. I want fiction, not science fiction. ANyway, on the books proper.

This is a great way to get hooked on Scott Mariani and the Ben Hope series. Hope is former SAS. Now he ist righter of wrongs, protector of the innocent and he is not above using his highly toned SAS skills to do so. In this one, an ex-husband kidnaps his son. Finding him won't be easy and what happens after Ben finds him is even more complicated,

Not bad

Have read better from this author, but this was only a novella, and I ways think they try to cram too much information in them. Will not let that put me off of reading another from this author.

Different to most of the other Ben Hope books this is nevertheless engaging.

I must have missed it before. But I enjoyed it. These thrillers took me by surprise as I never thought that they would be much cup of tea. How wrong I was! I find myself addicted to them.

It’s always difficult to score a novella. I enjoyed the plot but it flashes by so quickly it never gives you time to get absorbed into it. I much prefer his 'proper' full length novels but it's nice to have a quickie every now and again!!

Ben Hope 2

Exciting and not too gory. Action packed and enough description for me to visualize the scenes as they happen and enhance s the story line.
I'm looking for the next book with Ben Hope for my Kindle. 😊

Engrossing quick read

There are a couple of places where the pace slumped a little, and one place where Ben’s action was astoundingly silly for the man he is, but other than that it was a good pulse-racing story. Well worth the reading.

Clever plot. Destroyed by infantile dialogue

Lightweight naive dialogue spoils a clever idea. Author should change hero's name to Ben nohope. Sad to write this but really disappointing start to finish.

First Scott Mariani book I have come across. It started so well and then went downhill rapidly.
The setting, The Blackforest in the heart of Europe is a farcical choice for an illegal laboratory, try Afghanistan or Iran, and I could have swallowed the bait.
