Charlie Travers didn’t ask to be the leader of a rebellion…but no one else wanted the job.
Now that he’s gathered an army and armed them with the deadliest starfighter ever made, the legendary Vanguards, he just needs one more someone who knows how to fly the things.
Unfortunately, no one has been behind the stick of a Vanguard in hundreds of years, since the end of the war that threw the galaxy into chaos. Their only hope lays in the legends of a crashed ship, a fighter crew frozen in stasis for centuries.
A crew of pilots from the ruthless Kamerian Alliance, the fearsome ravagers who once sought to rule the galaxy. Even if they’re willing to help, can they be trusted?
Charlie’s going to have to find out. Because it’s not just the Anguilar Empire that’s after him. The bounty hunter Seraph Nix is still out there, seeking revenge for the death of her crew.
NEW ALLIANCES MADE & BROKEN, & THE STRUGGLE TO FREE THE KNOW UNIVERSE BECOMES MORE INTENSE
Vanguard Wing (Taken to the Stars, book 5) by J.N. Chaney and Rick Partlow is a story of a few individuals who were abducted from their planets to rebel against a species who have enslaved most of the known galaxy with plans to strip the captured worlds of their resources. Charlie, Laranna, Val, Gib, Lenny, and the rest of the Resistance are taking the battle to the Anguilar and restore freedom to all who have been enslaved, worked to death, and sometimes outright butchered.
As always with J.N Chaney and Rick Partlow, this book and series is very well written, action-packed, intriguing, and suspenseful. The cast of characters are well defined and you'll find yourself routing for Charlie, Laranna, Val, Gib, and the rest of them as they take the fight to those worlds that are under the control of the Anguilar to free them and turn the control back to the rightful residents.
I have really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next one in this series. I hope you will find this book and series as entertaining and enjoyable as I have.
It's an ok follow on from the previous book. If you read this as a one off, half of it would not make sense What was disappointing was the way the Resistance had to keep overcoming the impossible. Yes you can do it once or twice, but what seemed like 4 or 5 times just starts to become too much The ending however is worth it. The last battle interesting and entertaining and the decisions made leading nicely into the next book. If it's done well it will make for a very interesting next book
I can see the overarching plot happening here, which is causing the characters to continue to grow and change. This particular installment wasn't overly riveting - although that may have been that I had to put it down and pick it back up again. I like the characters a lot. It just didn't have the punch that the previous books have had. Charlie Travers is starting to have to be a leader that he may or may not be prepared to be. But seeing him grow into it is fun.
John Pirhalla has done a great job with the narration of the series. He makes it a pleasure to listen.
Reclamation and protection for one world at a time....
Charlie thaws out 4 Kamerians to teach them how to fly the Vanguard craft. Since the Kamerians are the race that left the galaxy in turmoil that allowed the Anguliar to take over, it is unclear whether they can be trusted, but in the short term, they do a good job of teaching them to fly and fight well with the ships. They set out to free a planet on the outskirts of the system from the Anguliar and they are successful. Now they need to train the inhabitants to repel any invaders while they go off and free the next world...if things go according to plan......! A pot-boiler of suspense, intrigue, romance, fighting both in space and on the ground, explosions, betrayals and death await the reader in this exciting continuation of the Taken to the Stars saga. A fun read with some unexpected (perhaps?) twists and turns.
Loved the book. The action was there, as always, as well as the interplay between characters, both with friends, new Allie’s & of course enemies. Seraph Nix is a pain in the butt! I really dislike that woman. Can’t wait to see what happens in the next one as it appears it’s back to more familiar territory for Charlie and group.
Charlie Travers of Earth has formed himself quite an army. But now he’s got to decide what to do with it. They need to hit the Auguilar Empire where it hurts but not so badly that they come after him and his army with everything.
Charlie’s army now consist of a great number of Copperell warriors who could be trained to be sterfighter pilots if they had the number of starfighters they actually needed. So, Lenny, their computer entity who started this whole thing, told them of a crashed Auguilar cruiser that contained several squadrons of Vanguard starfighters. Lenny thought most would be intact, especially with the one that had crashed and then had been frozen under tons of ice on the moon Aether. This moon also contained a remote outpost for the Auguilar so it was like Charlie’s people could just fly in and take what they wanted. Still, he believed that he had the necessary force to get this job done.
So, they attacked Aether and were very successful since the Auguilar troops on this very remote outpost wasn’t what you’d call top quality troops! They did secure a large number of Vanguard starfighters and that lead to the next problem. How do you train enough pilots to become a real starfighter squadron that could face off against the Auguilar.
Well, what they did find was another crashed curiser, a Kamerian cruiser that was very similar to the Auguilar cruisers. Inside were numerous stasis pods loaded with Kamerian crewmen. Lenny later identified from their uniform insignia, four of the pods that contained what appeared to be Kamerian pilots. Now a decision had to be made on whether or not to “thaw” these pilots out and maybe use them to help train all of Charlie’s other pilots.
They eventually did just that. The Kamerians had slept through the entire period of time where their empire rose and then was driven out while the Auguilar came in to become the ruling Empire. At first they had trouble believing anything Charlie and his people told them and they always seemed to project an air of superiority over everyone else. This annoyed a number of Charlie’s people with some never getting comfortable in trusting these Kamerians.
So now Charlie had a large cadre of trained starfighter pilots who now formed the Vanguard Wing. And he was going to us it to attack and capture the Thalassia outpost that was lightly guarded but needed to be liberated to show not only the Auguilar that his resistance force was coming for them, but to give hope to people like the Thalassians who were and had been treated as slaves for far too long.
Things never turn out as planned and Charlie should have known better. Not all the Kamerians were behind him and he let his guard down a little too much. So now he’s going to find out what a disaster could look like if he trusted the wrong people. Will his resistance army be defeated in it’s first big attempt. If so, will Earth be next on their list of places to conquer?
More will be reveled in the next book, “Home of the Brave”, now available on Amazon.
Charlie Travers and company continue the uphill struggle against the Anguilar empire who are bent on total subjugation of all humanoid species in the galaxy. His small force of friends must find allies to take the fight to liberate words dying under Anguilar control. They need space fighters, trained pilots and soldiers, weapons, food, and bases of operation. What do they have now? Almost nothing except determination. If they loose, the galaxy looses. Loosing is not an option!
At the end of this book Which is exceptionally well done. The authors help us understand a little bit of sorrow . It happens every day On everywhere But The nice things that we have to keep in mind . There is always somebody there for our back. Somebody to lift you up . To give you that big hug ,and kiss. Just like our loved ones always did. Thank you author this book and the 1 that follows will be great to read.
This fifth book in the series is as solid as the first book. The authors' writing style is very readable with plot twists and surprises. Excellent military action with well written details. Sci-Fi readers will enjoy this series and this issue of this series.
Rousing tale with all the elements to make it even more interesting. Got the book and read it through in nearly one sitting. I want the next!! Write on J.N. and Rick!! Speedily!!
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that he never stops writing. His books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
Charlie and his crew continue to do what they do best. The story and plot line continue to be original and I'm really liking the series. Keep up the good work!
Partlow does it again - the Resistance fires up an “island-hopping campaign” to take the war to the Aguilar… but their first conquest looks an awful lot like Guadalcanal - a long, tough and merciless slog from which survival is not guaranteed.
Looking forward to the next book, when ma ybe Charlie and his beautiful green wife have their first child. A boy or girl with DNA of both to lead more exciting adventures along with their parents.
Love reading all these books. Charlie is a down to earth leader and all the supporting cast is well developed. The story in each book are well defined and there are a lot of fast paced action thanks
I'm liking the series so far. This installment I found a little bit over the top as Charlie seems to get in very deep and still pulls a rabbit out of his a** :-)
This fifth book I was hoping to tie up some loose ends, but the authors do a wonderful job of keeping it going of keeping the interest and making you very happy to be reading it. So now there’s nothing to do but get the next book and see how they Bring that one through. There were a couple small editorial mistakes in the book, but most people won’t ever catch them.
