Unapologetically Human

Rate this book
Enter the mind, emotions and experiences of a boy on a confounding journey toward manhood. It seems like a simple process, but life proves that the metamorphosis from infancy to adulthood is far more complicated than any of us care to acknowledge. Follow Roman as he takes you through the jungle of obstacles he parents, drugs, alcohol, poor decisions and most dangerous of all--the struggle within himself. This is a book written with brutal sincerity about common life issues that are at present, all too often regarded as normal. The author explores how this worldly belief is a pitfall, and how the very similar repression of his own painful beginnings led to a burgeoning malaise in his later years. As you read you will finally come to the understanding that this is less a story about the author than it is a story about all of us.

Roman Newell was born in the Rogue River Valley of Southern Oregon. He received his undergraduate education from the United States Military Academy at West Point where he majored in Arabic Studies and concentrated in Mechanical Engineering. He commissioned into the United States Army as an infantry officer and served honorably in the prestigious 82nd Airborne Division. His two deployments took him to austere outposts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today he is a major in the Army Reserves. He relishes new challenges which have often included marathons and various endurance events. His running has taken him around the world: from a marathon in Jordan to the streets of Paris. He spent time working with native Arabic speakers in 2007 and relied on these skills during his time abroad in 2009-10. He has a passion for skydiving, a scuba diving certification, and is working on bringing forth his own podcast. World travel will always hold a special place but he loves the coastal mountains of Oregon and spends most of his time with his favorite Belgian Malinois, Zima. Roman writes from wherever he is, and never stays put too long. He is working on his next book.

My words cannot describe the journey I have been on with Roman while reading his book. Along the way I have lectured him, cheered him on, and had faith in him. His writing is so deeply truthful and raw. While I shook my head in dismay at some of his choices, he continually opened my mind to the internal struggles of others. Most importantly, he helped me to better understand the trauma of a difficult childhood. The most important person in my life graduated from "the school of hard knocks" and with vivid and poetically painful details Roman led me to a better understanding of the ongoing pain from trauma in the formative years. I highly recommend this book.
