This is much more of a "themes and ideas" book than a regular narrative. It's more about the different paths evolution can take intelligent life than a story where we follow characters on a journey.

That said, it would have been better if it was shorter. There's a novella's worth of stuff here so by making it an entire book it feels stretched out.

Great First book for series I loved reading on reddit. A very enjoyable read. I read this over on his patreon so I could get the extra writings. I think my favorite thing about this story is the unexpected thing (at least to me) that end up occurring. Some of the species are hard get a grasp on their motivation. But all in all it is a good read! I even ended up buying book 1 on amazon.
Normally I'm more of an Asimov writing style lover but this hit the spot!

Regarding characters, I think there is a lot of incompetence of professionals in the beginning. It gets better though due to reasons that spoilers.

Once Humanity is spread among the stars more it makes sense for the characters to be jumping from role to role since there is more of a shortage. However a couple of things at the very beginning bother me. I don't believe that NASA and the ESA would sanction their astronauts landing without full EVA suits on. But just a little bit of Suspension of Disbelief make it a very enjoyable story!

I read this book because my brother has been pestering me to do so. I ended up finishing it in like a week because I was hooked. I’m a sucker for sci-fi and it feeds into all of those fun sci-fi needs, while having an interesting approach of its own. The concept of most sentient species out there being herbivores was interesting, and also made sense. I feel like all the authors choices about the different species made a lot of sense to me. The characters are well written and interesting, and seeing humans from their points of view was interesting and often amusing. I’m not patient enough to wait for the next book on kindle, so I’ll be binging the rest on royal road.

It's a DNF however it is a GOOD story it has just reminded me why I do not read a lot of sci-fi genre which is to say it makes me wildly uncomfortable and tires me quite a lot mentally. I love chalenging books but the type of inherent despair and strangness just puts me in a bad mood.

However, let me reitarate that as far as I red it's a great book and I encourage everyone to give it a go! It's not mine but it may very well be yours cup of tea 😀

Absolutely love this story. Like most others probably, I saw it on reddit first, but I knew if there ever was a printed version I would absolutely have to have it. Never has a story got me this hooked/excited before. Truly an amazing sci-fi novel. Keep it up SP!

This is top notch fiction. I don't usually like military sci-fi, but this has me reconsidering the whole subgenre (along with Craig Alanson's Expeditionary Forces series, which is also great).

It's an Animal Farm for our time. Brilliant and subtle swipes at modern-day hatred and sociotechnological contentions, yet it doesn't take itself too seriously. It's also fast-paced, fun, and smart.

Good thing there is an HFY fancast so I can continue to follow along!

ETA: Since I got to the end of the fancast, I have stopped reading this series. It continues on Royal Road, but I will wait until it is published in audio.
