I say this every time but I feel like it's the fairest way to start these--I do not speak German at anything close to a native level. I've been trying to teach myself for quite some time and reading is the best way I can think of to push myself outside of the lessons and grammar books.
So, please keep that in mind.
Now then, "Der Bann." If I remember correctly, this is a german translation of what was originally an English book. If there is anyone else out there reading this review specifically for language learning, I will say (and it could just be luck), but it seems to me that translations from English are maybe perhaps just a teeny bit easier to get through. That being said, it might just be that this book itself was more accessible. Whatever the case, I can say this: I absolutely found myself reading huge chunks of this and really enjoying it just as a reader and not as a language learner.
There are a couple things you need to be aware of before you jump in. (Oh, and if you're curious, I'd rate myself at like a B1; that's a pretty vague guess, but if I have any slight strength, it's reading, but even that's admittedly pretty shaky.) But anyway, there are initially 3 different stories going on here and that does lead to the danger of every book, no matter what--you end up liking one storyline more than the others. In a situation like this, it was exacerbated a bit by the fact that one takes place a hundred or so years ago, so the language used is markedly less common. I'm sure it's fitting and makes sense in the story, but I was just unprepared for it.
Another thing to keep in mind is that there is some slight I guess what might be called fantasy in here. So, be prepared for words you don't know in that area as well. Unless you're a huge fantasy reader anyway, but even then, there is a bit of "made up" terminology used, but that's gonna be the same no matter what language you speak and you get used to it pretty quickly.
As for the story itself, as far as my opinion even counts there, I really enjoyed it. This isn't a short book and it was an uphill battle for me in a lot of ways just given my language level, but I finished it. And not only that, I really truly enjoyed some parts of it, enough, in fact, that I felt involved and had opinions about the characters and their actions and the way things were playing out as I read. I guess that might be the best review I can give this: even though I had a harder time than a native reader, I still read this book in many ways as if I were reading it in English and that says a lot about both the author and the translators.

Ich hörte das Hörbuch und bin so froh, dass ich es endlich beendet habe.
Mir war nicht klar, dass ich keinen typischen Thriller vor mir habe, sondern einen Mix, der auch fantastische Elemente beinhaltet. Die Kennenlerngeschichte von Nicole und Charles fand ich charmant und hat mir am besten gefallen. Der Rest war jedoch langatmig und stellenweise auch wenig nachvollziehbar für mich. Wieso sehen sich denn alle Nachfahren von Erna so ähnlich? Wirklich seltsam. Auch die Besessenheit von Jakap - realistischer, wenn er tatsächlich geglaubt hätte, dass es sich um seine Nachfahren gehandelt hätte.
Auch die Gegenwart mit Hannah, Nate und Lia war nicht spannend genug. Immer wieder Wiederholungen, ständiges Misstrauen, gleiche Gespräche. Insgesamt ging es drunter und drüber.
Leider war das Hörbuch mit 16 Stunden unglaublich lang. Nutzt diese Zeit lieber für ein anderes Buch.

Konnte das Buch kaum aus der Hand legen und habe es gleich ein zweites Mal gelesen. Jetzt suche ich mehr von diesem Autor.
