This is one of if not the first novel I’ve read in the Robert B. Parker canon which was penned by Alison Gaylin. This installment involves a ne’er-do-well wealthy and entitled playboy son with several trips to rehab under his belt. Though the son’s relationship with his father is testy at best, his mother adores him. The parents have financed yet another sketchy business plan in hopes that it will help their child grow up. The son now oversees the startup of an energy drink manufacturer and distributorship, but he has disappeared.
With the son now missing, his mother hires private investigator Sunny Randall to find him and to bring him home. But when Sunny learns that the chemical formula in the high-energy drinks contains unknown compounds from overseas, the case begins to take unexpected twists and turns.
Author Alison Gaylin has done a fine job bringing life to Robert B. Parker’s characters. Gaylin’s writing style (of the dialogue in particular) is much less spare and thus more “wordy” than Parker’s style, yet she manages to create a satisfying cliffhanger of a tale. I look forward to her work on future installments in Robert B. Parker’s book series.
My rating: 7/10, finished 2/27/26 (4027).
