OHKUBO Atsushi

Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.

Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.

wow. that’s crazy. what an absolutely absurd ending. i’ve never had so much fun with the ending of a series in my life. the characterization? the art? the plot? your honor nothing is coming close. i wish i could put into words how much i absolutely loved this series. i can’t (and won’t) find a single negative thing to say about it. there are no faults. man. that’s crazy. sorry to everyone who will be in a five mile radius of me, i don’t think i’ll ever shut up about it. i think i’ll read this during august every year for the rest of my life.

This story went from lots of action and a lot of fanservice to more exposition than a Stan Lee penned Marvel Comic. While losing the fanservice of underaged girls is an improvement. The philosophizing was a bit much and frankly not interestings. Especially the evil person going, I'm doing this to save the world. Then the hero simply replying Na. It got old quick but was still more than half this volume. I am much more interested in the "afterword" part of the story from the end until the spoiler.

To me it just felt that even with all the story building the author did not come close to sticking the landing. It is not bad at least.

“is there any way to bring deliverance without death?”
i’m so fascinated by the concepts this manga is exploring that i’m gonna ignore how bullshit this ending was. obsessed with it being a soul eater prequel and the message to live the hell out of life. tho with it being a prequel, we run into the same issues as the avatar: the last airbender world where we know shit just keeps getting worse forever. but that’s life i guess.

Honestly I was slightly confused with the ending of this manga-- but after a bit of research I saw that a lot of this ending has tie ins or references to Soul Eater (which I haven't read or seen). So, that probably played into my confusion... but overall I enjoyed the story and of course the art itself was really well done. I would say I was overall satisfied with the ending, even though it was a bit confusing.

A long-running manga with a great ending is a rare thing, but Ohkubo did it. Fantastic from beginning to end.
