The third book in the Witches' Brew Mystery series and I have read the previous two.
Phoebe Winchester is hosting an author's event at the Earl's Study, her book and tea shop. When the author and his team arrive it seems they are not getting on at all well and pretty soon there is a murder. When one of her friends is accused Phoebe seeks out the help of local P.I. Rich Lofting to solve the case.
The most important thing to know about this series is that Phoebe is a witch who has only recently come into her powers and is having some difficulties learning how to manage. The highlight of this book is the scene where someone is threatening her cat which makes her very angry. Do not make Phoebe angry. The results are hilarious.
A lighthearted and entertaining book, well written and with enjoyable characters. I look forward to more.

I’m not usually a fan of books about witches but the magic in this book is so much fun. It’s a hoot. I love how Phoebe’s magic worked to help catch the culprit in this book. I enjoy how her magic sometimes just happens and is not the result of her conscious choice/actions. I assume as the books go on she will have more agency with her magic. I especially appreciate the magic in these books because it’s interesting and sometimes hilarious and, most importantly, the non-magical parts of the story take up more pages than the magical parts.
It was laugh out loud funny at times. It was touching at times. It was slightly suspenseful at times but this is a cozy and there is nothing in the story that is too scary.
I love this town and its inhabitants, human and cat. I love how so many people knew about Phoebe’s and/or her aunt’s powers and just accept a witch, witches, in their midst. I love the store with its books and teas and food and I love the bakery next door and so much about the town. I adore Phoebe’s house and want much mor of it in future books. There are so many great recurring characters. The mystery is excellent too but it was the least important thing for me about the story, even though I enjoyed it.
The teas in this third book sounded particularly delicious. There are several recipes included at the end. The teas appeal to me more than the food. The savory food is too NOT vegan for me to get hungry, for which I am grateful. The sweet stuff does appeal because I can veganize it in my mind without any effort.
The Acknowledgments section is lovely I love how she says she wrote about what she knows and how her biggest passions in life are books, tea, bird watching and cat rescue and how she got all of these into this book.
I might not have read this series if not for Laura (and Margie gets some credit too) and I’m grateful because now I have a new favorite just for fun series. I only wish there were already more books out. I don’t think I will get tired of them. These first three books were prefect comfort reads for me. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to read the fourth book soon. I will keep reading this series as long as there are new books in it.

Phoebe, a late-blooming witch at age thirty-five, is finally discovering her powers, including one power that made me laugh out loud near the end of the book
Phoebe is still getting herself in trouble with the police by sticking her nose in police business as she tries to solve murders. Luckily, her childhood friend, a former policeman often accompanies her when he's not doing his own investigations for his PI business.
The mystery and plot are more exciting in this book than in book two and kept me turning pages way too late at night. However, the small village atmosphere and the unique characters, including Bob, the cat are the main attractions for me. More cats are added in this book as Phoebe sets up a cat rescue center in her bookshop. Mr. Loughery, a kindly, older gentleman who visits the bookshop every day, becomes one of Bob's best friends as they doze in their cozy chairs by the fireplace.

I just found out about this series in the last month or so and I’ve already read the first three books 😂
This is my comfort reading happy place:
- small town vibes
- old Victorian house
- book and tea shop (and we get to see behind the scenes a bit, more interesting in this case since there’s magic involved)
- magic, witches, women finding out how powerful they are…from other senior women
- bit of a will they or won’t they off to the side
- nice job with audio narration (and same narrator straight thru the series)
- the murder mystery aspect is least interesting to me in all mystery series I read bc I read for the characters, but it’s a good one as well.
- ETA: How could I forget? We learn a bit more about Phoebe’s cat, Bob, in this one and perhaps a few other cat characters too. 😺
What more do I need? The fourth book was just published and my library is ordering the CD and print versions. And probably the Hoopla also. 😀 Hoping to read it soon.

Was the iced tea really that popular? Feel like I heard a lot about it during this book, and as someone who does love tea, I don’t think I’d be running daily to go get so from her store.
I wanted to love this, because mystery, magic, tea and birds, perfect combo. Not enough books about birds, but this just felt a lot like book two. I wish it was more like book one which I really enjoyed.

Another fun adventure with Phoebe and her found family in Raven Creek. The mystery was intriguing and, while I did not know who the guilty party was until the reveal, I thought it was well-developed and creative. What really drew me into this series and continues to fascinate me is Phoebe’s powers and her learning to control them as well as discovering the boundaries of all she can do. Looking forward to finding out more about them.

Author Sebastian Marlow is coming to Phoebe Winchester's book and tea store Earl’s Study for a talk and a book signing. The famous birder has also agreed to a hike with his fans as he looks to put Raven Creek on the map if he is right about finding a Pacific tanager that is believed to have been extinct for over 50 years. The signing goes well but before the hike, Sebastian is found dead in his suite at a local B&B.
Phoebe has noticed tension between the author and the members of his entourage. He had also recently fired his business manager who came to Raven Creek to try to get his job back. Worried that the murder will reflect badly on her store, Phoebe knows the killer has to be apprehended quickly. She is going to need help so she asks her friend, tenant, and handsome private investigator Rich Lofting to aid her in her quest to find the killer.

Our protagonist Phoebe Winchester is struggling to control her witchy abilities and is worried that her secret will be out because of it. She is also learning how to make all the special tea blends her aunt previously made as well as adding some new blends of her own. There's a lawyer in town trying to buy up properties for a big corporation as well, upsetting Leo and her other friends. Add to that a signing with a famous birder followed by his murder means her hands are more than full. There is definitely romantic tension between her and Rich. Her best friend Amy owns the Sugarplum Fairy bakery next to Earl’s Study. She not only bakes delicious treats, but she is a great sounding board for Phoebe ready to give her a shove in the right direction especially considering her love life. Phoebe also has Imogen and Daphne who were friends and employees of her aunt to lean on. All the characters are cleverly crafted with great dialogue. All are very enjoyable.
The mystery is full of a spider web of clues, secrets, lies, twists, and turns. Ms. Rue plotted the whole thing out so well that I thought many different people were guilty as I tried to do my armchair sleuthing. As Phoebe works to make sense of the death investigation she even states the plot was "so thick Agatha Christie would have needed a few whiteboards to unravel it all." So I am not ashamed to say I was kept guessing until everything was spelled out for me. I liked that Phoebe shared her and Rich's findings with Detective Patsy Martin and she appreciated it for the most part. But Phoebe's involvement did put her in danger. I loved the showdown and the enlightenment Phoebe received from the good detective.
A book and tea store is a splendid setting for a cozy mystery series especially when you add cats. Phoebe's cat Bob is such a cool cat, smart and perceptive. He is also the store cat so he goes to work with her almost every day. Phoebe will do anything to protect him and he would do the same for her. In The Grim Steeper, Phoebe is finally able to open Bob's Place, a small section of the store where she will host adoptable kitties. Bob's reactions were humorous and heartwarming.
The Grim Steeper is the perfect mix of mystery and magic. Well written with great detail, Ms. Rue's words pull you into the story to enjoy her wonderful characters and all their triumphs and tribulations with a delightful dose of humor in all the right places. I am very excited for this series to continue.

It was so nice to be back in Raven Creek with Phoebe, Bob the Cat, Rich and Co [though I could have done with more Mr. Loughery as I love him and he is such a great character ]. I had forgotten just how much I enjoyed spending time with them!
Phoebe is still struggling with her newfound powers [with almost always hilarious results ] and the stress of having a huge author event in the store is not helping matters at all. Then a murder happens [naturally ], the main suspect disappears, and someone close to Phoebe is implicated and all gloves are off, both in investigating AND with her magic and the reader is in for a wild ride.
This would have been a 5 star read for me [spending more time with Honey and her hilarious, bombastic mom and with the shop girls was a real treat in this book ] but for two teeny problems [that were very much ME problems, but I still feel I need to add to be true to my reading experience ]: 1. The reveal. While most of the reveal is...well, let's just say Phoebe realizes just how much she loves Bob the Cat, and that you should never, ever make Phoebe truly, fully angry. EVER. IYKYK. After the...um...shenanigans however, it becomes very tepid and lackluster [though the small scene in the police station was hilarious ], and I was left wondering if that was it and well, just why [it is explained but... ]. The book was just so good and then it just seemed to fall flat and it was surprising and kind of weird. And then 2. there was just a little too much romance.swooning for my taste [I am here to read a full on mystery book ] in this one. Again, this was [probably ] just me, but I'd have loved to have more mystery and less swooning.
Other than those two minor issues [it certainly didn't hinder my reading of this book and I never felt a need to stop or skip parts ], this was a fantastic book, that I really enjoyed and left me wishing book 4 was already waiting for me.
**A small note about the narrator [even though I did not have a NetGalley audiobook for this one ] for this book [Kristin Price]; I have not written about her before, but as she really enhanced this reading, I wanted to give her a shout out so those who use audiobooks like I do, know that she is one of the very good ones [again, IYKYK ] and her interpretation of the events makes the funny stuff even funnier. Very well done.

This is a new series and author for me, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. While this is the third book in the series, Ms Rue gives enough background that I never felt lost in the reading. The Grim Steeper incoporates all the essential of the story, Phoebe our MC is still trying to comprehend all that being a witch entails, learning how to control her powers without having a training period, running the bookstore and whipping up the teas her teashop/bookstore is well known for. With the help of her employees and friends, she is getting ready to host the biggest book signing event they have ever done. The famous birder, influencer, and author does a wonderful event, but Phoebe and company can't help but notice the tension between the author and his entourage. When he is found murdered the next morning at the B & B that Phoebe arranged for the group, she can't help but feel responsible. The rest of our interesting tales include suspects, real estate, and magic run amok. It's definitely worth your time. Another home run for Gretchen Rue! I hope she keeps these books coming. I am absolutely enthralled with Phoebe, Rich, Bob, and the gang. I love the mix of magic and mystery. The tea making is really charming and all the ideas for sour dough bread are fantastic too.
This book especially, with the bird watching element, I thought was really interesting. I love that I can learn new things as well as unknot a mystery. These books and these characters never get old. In fact, the more I read, the more sucked in that I get. I cannot wait to see Phoebe up and running with full powers. That right there is going to be amazing.
And as always, I absolutely love Bob. He is the cutest dang critter, and so smart and protective of Phoebe. Have I mentioned that I love that? Because I do! Please keep writing this series. I am a big fan!!

Sebastian Marlow is a renowned birder, destined to put Raven Creek on the map with his discovery of an extinct bird.
Unfortunately for Sebastian, not everyone is impressed by him, and his death puts a friend of Phoebe's on the suspect list.
I really enjoyed this book, Bob the cat is definitely my favorite character but Phoebe is wonderful as well.

Gretchen Rue never disappoints! I was lucky to receive this book before the official publication and really enjoyed this quick read. The Witches’ Brew Series were the first books that got me hooked on cozy mystery novels. This book held the series high standards. Phoebe and Bob find themselves in the middle of trouble once more in this summer vibes, cozy mystery that made me want to curl up with a cup of tea in the morning while listening to the birds outside. Gretchen does a wonderful job at crafting the mystery plot alongside growing the world-building of Raven Creek. I cannot wait to read more from this series!

I very much enjoyed this addition! It made me giggle, and had the right mix of personal, mystery, and magic. Phoebe is going to be a very powerful witch. I agree with Amy about rich and hope Leo and her get it together as well. I love the idea of her cute little book store/tea shop. It sounds so lovely and cozy. When she kept telling herself no about Coco, I kept thinking you know you mean yes. I like the bits of cat lore in the book as well. Highly recommend! The Grim Steeper is the perfect mix of mystery and magic. Add in a charming setting, fresh brewed tea, chatter about books and the hopeful adoption of cats and this was a delightful read from start to finish.
This is book 3 in the Witches’ Brew Mystery series. Phoebe is definitely learning more about her newly discovered witchy powers throughout this book. She’s even having a tough time controlling them. I loved watching her get some guidance from Honey’s mom, adored the brief “encounter” she had with Aunt Eudora and giggled at Phoebe’s reaction when someone tried to threaten Bob.
The star of this book is clearly Phoebe’s cat, Bob. He’s opinionated and easily steals any scenes he appears in. I love that the author adds her passion for cat rescue, which she explains in her acknowledgments, to this series. In this book we get to watch the opening of Bob’s Place, an auxiliary cat shelter located right in Phoebe’s shop! I loved seeing sweet Mr. Loughery excited about this and wonder why Bob was so protective of Coco.
The mystery kept me guessing from start to finish. I didn’t quite know who to trust since the members of the victim’s team were all a bit shady. I liked the added inclusion of bird watching.
I love spending time in Raven Creek. Phoebe’s shop is so delightful. I like hearing the descriptions of the sweet treats she enjoys and the custom made fruity iced tea blends she makes. With a hint of new romance in the air and the support of the local law enforcement, I look forward to sleuthing with this crew again soon.

So this is the first in the series I have read but I am downloading the other two on my kindle right now and going back and reading the others. I love really any cozy mystery that involves bookstores and tea, these are two of my very favorite things! I love the bigger picture story line and I loved the mystery in this book. I didn’t know who did it until almost the end so great writing there. I recommend this author and series 100%.
And even better because it’s out TODAY so you don’t have to wait to get it!

However, when another body shows up and the prime suspect is one of her own, Phoebe has to step up her game to clear their name.
I have adored every single entry in the series to date. There’s nothing about Raven Creek and Phoebe not to love. The mysteries are always well written and thought out filled with red herrings that lead you down different paths before finally coming to realize who actually done it.

Delightful cozy mystery with twists, turns, red herrings and surprises all around as this book in the series takes it to a new level of awesome! The plot is fun with paranormal shenanigans, pet adoptions, witty banter, great friendships and more, but complex as the mystery woven throughout the story is wrought with twists, turns, red herrings and even more surprises! If you haven't started this series, you absolutely should as each book builds the repeat characters personalities and relationships a bit more plus hours of great entertainment. This is only the 3rd book so you aren't far behind and can easily catch up. I think this author is just warming up to bring us many more really great stories if this one is setting the bar, then the bar is high for great entertainment and well woven mysteries! I can't wait for more!

Had a hard time getting into this one at first for some reason. The pace picked up for me and I finished a satisfying read. Will definitely continue the series. I love The Earl’s Study and the terrific cast of characters

My tea leaves predict a long run for this charming cozy series. Phoebe is hosting an author event in the third book in the Witches' Brew series. When the author is murdered, Phoebe and her feline sidekick, Bob, investigate. In addition to solving the author's murder, Phoebe must contend with a developer who wants to buy up the local shops, including hers.
Phoebe is settling in nicely, and has built a good network of friends with her fellow shopkeepers, her staff, as well as her PI boyfriend. Her magical tea blends are going well, and she may soon surpass her deceased aunt in skill. The flip side is that her powers aren't exactly always under her control, and sometimes get her into more trouble than out of it.
Why you should read this book: Books, tea, pet adoptions, and a crime-solving cat, what more do you need? This is a great series and each book is better than the one before. Her friends and staff are people you'll want to hang out with.
Why you might not want to read it: It might seem a bit implausible that Phoebe is this powerful and never ran across issues before, or that she didn't realize she had power. Occasionally, I felt she only visited her friends when she needed something, but that could be because there was so much going on in the story.

Anyone looking for a dose of grown up versions of Sabrina the Teenaged Witch and Nancy Drew, you've come to the right book.
Phoebe Winchester is trying to control her magic while managed her bookshop cafe, figuring out her relationship with an old friend, and of course hosting a major event with social media influencer. When the influencer turns up dead, she digs her heels into finding the killer before her town of Raven Creek turns up more bodies.
I loved reading this book. It features a likeable main character in Phoebe, who is a witch without being a cliche. Bob the cat makes you want to go cuddle your own cat, and Mr. Loughery is the absolute cutest old man.
The whole vibe of the book is perfect for its release of September, getting you prepared for the Fall and spooky season feels.
I will now be going back to read the first two books in this series, because I want to keep going back to Raven Creek to see this cast of well-written and relatable characters.

"The Grim Steeper (Witches' Brew Mystery #3)" by Gretchen Rue is a hint of 4th of July and a bit more Witchy happenstances. Phoebe is finally starting to use her abilities other than her time stopping ones. The trade off is now things are going floating whenever her anxiety spikes. Not so great when you don't want everyone to know about your powers.
On top of all that, her store's guest speaker is found in his hotel room. He had switched rooms, so was he the intended target? The police ask Phoebe to let them know if she happens to hear something, not to investigate though. So, of course she jumps right in investigating anyway.
I have to say that I liked that Phoebe is actually using her abilities more in this one. Yes, most of the time it's accidental but at least she's working on it more. She makes a lot of growth in this book. My favorite line though was when she told Bob, the cat, "Bobert, put those ears away. You have not been cleared for take off." When he did airplane ears over a new cat to the new cat rescue corner in the bookstore.

Love this cozy mystery series - the books are perfect comfort reads. The main character is in my dream situation - she inherited a gorgeous Victorian house in the PNW along with a combo bookstore/tea shop, plus she has witchy powers and an adorable cat, Bob - chef's kiss perfection!
This gives you a twisty mystery, bookish vibes, light romance, lots of suspects, a small town where everyone knows your business, and witchiness galore.

Thought this was cozy mystery but it actually kinda got a little creepy. I personally don’t care about the romance and there was more of that in this one. Did make me want to befriend a bird tho. 3.5⭐️
