Falling in love was easy.Fighting for that love might actually kill us.My name is Adeline Peters. I’m 35 years old, recently divorced, unemployed, and trying to pick up the pieces of my shattered world. My life hasn’t been easy, but I’m fighting to put it back together. I bought a new house, made new friends, hell – I’ve even fallen in love again, but now…I can’t enjoy it. I can’t enjoy my new life because it’s not safe.My life is now a literal nightmare, a roller-coaster of death, destruction and violence that I can’t stop. I’m being hunted by a man who is the human epitome of the devil, and the lives of everyone I know are on the line. Worse, I’m being forced to play God and determine whose life I’m saving and whose life I’m sacrificing. And all because I decided to start over and fell in love with my new neighbour. A neighbour with a dark and secretive past that has come back to haunt us both.I’m Addy, and this is my story. It’s not pretty. I don’t know if I’ll get my happy ending, but I do know this nightmare will end…even if it kills me.
I thought this book was actually really good! It’s the first debut novel I’ve ever read that I had no complaints about the writing.
I really liked that there were so many things different in the main characters life from the beginning, to the middle, to the end. It felt like you never knew what to expect and then all of a sudden it turned into a thriller almost!!
It was a very fun read. I loved that the characters were older and more mature. Seems hard to find these days.
I really liked this book. The emotions the FMC goes through is completely relatable. I can see how this book will have a specific target audience due to the characters life experiences. Someone without as much life experience may not fully grasp the enormity of those emotions, and thoughts at play. It also is not a super dark romance. It is spicy, but not overly descriptive. The intimacy is passionate, but vanilla. This is a perfect book for someone looking to try out a darker romance. It’s dark, but on the lighter side of dark.
This Dark Contemporary Romance goes from heartbreak to thrilling. The FMC and MMC are both older and more experienced in life, rather than the usual ages we see in dark romances. The book starts slow focusing heavily onto the romance before it takes a quick turn into mind boggling experiences for the characters. The story stays fascinating, dropping clues constantly throughout the book.
What an absolute thrill this book was. It's a slow burn, but when it gets going... BRING ON THE FIRE. It's got romance, spice, kidnapping, torture, murder and more... literally everything you want in a book wrapped up into one story.
I (Kindle) highlighted more in this book than I have in any previous books because so many of the comments and moments from the FMC just hit home.
It's a dark story with an undertone of lightness all the way through.
There's a lot to follow and take in, but all of it links in nicely and leads the story along.
I feel very lucky to have been picked to ARC read this and look forward to any future work by this author.
4.75⭐️rounding up. Okay, this book deserves SO much more hype. I was hooked from the first page as Adeline was such a relatable character for me, trying to navigate life after divorce. This book had romance, life challenges, suspense, spice, adventure and a perfect happy ending. I adored the relationship between Addy and Conner and their willingness to protect the other at all costs. The added layer of the Mitchell situation made the book way more high-stakes, which I loved. One minute I was smiling and kicking my feet, the next my heart was racing and my anxiety was through the roof. There wasn’t a dull moment throughout this entire story.
The ONLY criticism I have is that certain thoughts were repeated in a short time span (IE, Addy mentioned she and Conner’s relationship felt effortless at least 3+ times in a matter of a couple chapters).
4.5 stars. Rounded down from 5 because of the slow/long build up and annoying main character. Still, this book was overall fantastic and deserves more hype. The author did a great job of combining romance, thriller, and smut. This was a great read, but unnecessarily long at times. Definitely worth sticking through. Before you read please make sure you check the content warnings as there as some pretty queasy descriptions of SA and torture.
The story centres Adeline, a recent divorcee, who's trying to find her footing in her new single status. She moves into her new home and acquaintances herself with her new neighbours. However, not everyone may be what they portray themselves as.
There's a lot of suspense in this story. Adeline is a little naive and too trusting, which leads her to ignore several red flags. The story ends on a happy note, but she definitely has to work for it!
This book is a very good book. It's a slow burn, but u need to get to know everything cause this story takes u on a wild ride like omgoodness. U never know what to aspect next and who to trust. So much huddles that she had to go throu just to be where she is 2day. So good. If u like slow burns and suspense, ur gonna wanna read this.
Man Addy went through soooo much in such a short amount of time!Everything she went through just proved she is such a strong fmc. I want to say more but I feel like i will spoil the book. This was such a great read!
It took me so long to read this book. It was boring to me. Story line was so drawn out. I was skimming over chapters to try and move along. I couldn’t even read the epilogue.
This book was too long. Also, the writing style was sometimes strange. There was a lot of graphic sex, however also words like "frig." It was almost like two different people wrote the book.
This will probably end up being my favorite book of the year! I absolutely loved Adeline and Conner! The ending was exactly what my heart needed! I will definitely be reading more from this author once it comes out!
Such a great book! So proud of Jenn with her first book! It was a slow start for me, heavy on the romance, but when the thriller part started, I couldn’t put it down! This book has something for everyone :)
