The only aspect I found solid, was the blurb… 😔
The story’s execution failed in almost every aspect.
Many procrastinating scenes that didn’t assist in the story, lack of development and credibility, many plot holes and repetitions.
The epilogue was profoundly abrupt.

When I read the Goodreads synopsis of Saving Scarlett I was really intrigued but I am sorry to say it is exaggerated and embellished compared to the actual story in the book. While all the points mentioned in the synopsis were there in the book, the execution of the story left much to be desired.
To begin with, the plot lacked credibility. Although I sympathized with Scarlett’s experience of domestic violence and recognized the possibility of Stockholm Syndrome, her decision to prioritize financial stability over her own welfare seemed perplexing. Despite enduring daily brutality and gaslighting from her husband, she repeatedly emphasized that leaving him would result in losing everything, as her finances were entangled with his. Being a highly educated woman with substantial financial resources, it puzzled me why she couldn’t engage a proficient divorce lawyer and legally claim the monies owed to her if financial concerns were the primary reason for her enduring the abusive relationship. I question whether this portrayal accurately reflects the typical mindset of a domestic violence victim.
Furthermore, Bane/Ethan didn’t convincingly portray the image of an experienced assassin, as the author intended. With only one previous incident of successfully eliminating a target (that we were shown) before the contract to assassinate Scarlett, it was disappointing to observe him abandon his professional detachment. Despite his earlier claims of being indifferent to the morality of his targets, he unexpectedly allowed personal feelings to sway him when faced with Scarlett, citing her physical beauty and vulnerability as reasons for his deviation from his usual mindset. He blatantly ignored the explicit instructions from his client when he deviated from the planned course of action by breaking into Scarlett’s house. This departure from the initial plan raised doubts about how he had earned a reputation as a highly regarded hired killer, as his actions seemed inconsistent with the precision and professionalism typically associated with such individuals.
I found it perplexing to comprehend Scarlett’s immediate attraction to Bane. While one could attribute her seemingly calm demeanor upon realizing she had been kidnapped to a potential manifestation of Stockholm Syndrome, the sudden and intense romantic connection between her and Bane felt surreal and lacked believability on a certain level. While she didn’t display the typical behavior of a victim, her readiness to entrust another man with the resolution of all her problems didn’t sit well with me either.
Although this book is advertised as dark romance genre, I beg to differ. Apart from Bane being an assassin and the questionable storyline involving Scarlett’s father’s and husband’s alleged ties to the underworld, the rest of the book appeared to be rather average and lacking the expected intensity of the dark romance genre. The majority of the narrative revolved around Scarlett and Bane engaging in mundane daily activities and making sporadic calls to Phantom as part of their plan to dismantle her husband’s ‘financial empire.’ This repetitive and uneventful focus on routine tasks proved to be quite tedious and uninteresting.

Read this book! Let me just say that I couldn't put this book down. Scarlett is such a strong woman for all the abuse she has gone through from her husband. She is definitely a survivor. Bane, oh Bane, he is this assassin that's tough as nails and doesn't care who you are, but he has a soft heart. The chemistry between these two is off the charts. This book has Mafia, suspense, touch her, you die, kidnapping, murder, secrets, and an HEA!! I'm so glad I was chosen to be an ARC reader for this book. I will definitely recommend this book! Amazing book!

Quick short read with a little bit of spicy, but the whole book felt rushed, and the plot had some major holes. Character development was lacking and left me feeling no connection with either the female or the male, and their chemistry really felt miminal for how fast they fell in love. Ending was abrupt, and details that seemed relevant and needed to know were just missing. I really wanted to love it and support this author, but the book just doesn't live up to the hype, unfortunately.

3.5 stars! The idea of this book is great, but the execution could have been better. I wish the relationship between Scarlett and Bane would have developed much more so that I could believe in their love story. It almost felt rushed, and I needed more. It was a good book, just not great!

I enjoyed the storyline for the most part. I did think there were several times where the chapter was dragging on and then others just moved too quickly. Like with the husband? What the hell was that?! I need more suffering.
Overall I enjoyed the storyline and characters. I’m going to move forward with book 2…

I really enjoyed this story. The first part of the book went a bit fast for me and would have loved a little more detail or background on Scarlets marriage. The ending was perfect!

I liked it. It’s tragic enough you can’t look away but romantic enough to give you hope. It’s spicy and a nice mix of drama and romance.

Disappointing Dark Romance
My overall rating for Saving Scarlett is 2.75 stars ⭐️⭐️💫 I’m quite disappointed because the book’s blurb was very intriguing, and I believe it had the potential to be a good read if the execution had been more developed and well-written. Honestly, I’m struggling to find the right words to describe this book. It’s not a slow-burn romance, but it’s also not a whirlwind of instant love. The two main characters go from “we must keep our distance and emotions in check” to “I’m going to jump your bones” within a couple of chapters.
The background for each main character was barely developed, and they fell flat to me as a reader. The small development they underwent was negligible and lackluster. The story seemed to be trying to emulate “Haunting and Hunting Adeline,” but it fell short in execution. By the end of the audiobook, I was increasing the speed just to finish it. I had no motivation to continue reading and I don’t plan on reading Saving Caroline.
The main female character somehow loved her bookstore, yet she easily excused her reasons for never spending time there or helping her employees. I understand there were extenuating circumstances, but they felt like poor excuses most of the time. In short, this book was saved only by Teddy Hamilton’s narration and he’s the only reason I didn’t DNF the book.
Also, perhaps this is a minor spoiler, but the female protagonist’s constant mention of her desire to have the male protagonist’s babies almost immediately after they got together was a major turn-off for me. While I understand that some readers might enjoy such a theme in a book, it’s definitely one of my pet peeves.

There should be a feel of drama and danger but the story feels two dimensional. There’s a lot of inner monologue in this book but it doesn’t really provide anything insightful, just inane babble. I think more dialogue would help it immensely. Instead of reviewing a conversation had, just write the conversation, it would be more entertaining.
Bane doesn’t feel like an assassin, there’s not that edge of darkness or danger to him. Scarlett is a little too trusting for a person that suffers from abuse. Usually abusers like her husband Joshua are charismatic, then switch quickly to the abuse, he’s supposed to feel dangerous but again the character is flat.
Scarlett finds Bane attractive but since he doesn’t tell her about himself, how can she be growing close to him. Also he seems ready to dive in to protect her against two connected people, with just himself and a hacker, that seems unrealistic. When he’s said repeatedly his focus is on supporting his sister and helping his niece get better.
I started skimming at about 35%, then finally at about 50% when it still didn’t get better and couldn’t hold my interest I decided to DNF. Sadly I won’t be purchasing the beautiful special edition of the book. Hopefully the author continues to write and improve.

I really, really hate that I couldn’t love this book. I was very excited for it as it’s EASILY one of the most beautiful books I’ve seen with its black pages, white text, and gorgeous art throughout. However…
I couldn’t get past the grammar mistakes (SO many comma splices which I also suffer from making! But they were EVERYWHERE!) so many run-on sentences, etc.
I also had a very difficult time with the pace as it was back and forth between WAY too quick and then utterly slow the next second.
There’s SEVERAL plot points I also have beef with, but quite frankly, I just have beef with the entirety of what this plot is in general.
I could very much envision what the author was going for with this book and I can tell she put SO much effort into it—I listened to the whole playlist she created specially for each chapter, too (which she did a fantastic job with!) however this is also an “unneeded” part of reading the book, though it did add a more innovative way to *attempt* diving deeper into the book. It’s giving Wattpad-without-an-editor-vibes.
Unfortunately, I can’t rate this book any higher than 1 star as the qualities of this book I liked have absolutely nothing to do with the writing aspects. I wish this author nothing but the best, but I will unfortunately not be a loyal reader of this series.

Let me first start of with the aesthetic. This is the most beautiful e-book I’ve ever set my sights on. It is so esthetically pleasing. As soon as the paper copy comes out I’ll be running to buy that. It is a must have for your bookshelf. It’s just absolutely gorgeous.
Now onto the contents of the book. If you love a strong female character and morally grey main male lead, then you’re going to love Saving Scarlett. Scarlett is a a character that you want to root for. After everything she’s gone through at the hands of her husband, she’s still a fighter. Bane (the main male lead) gives off touch her and you die vibes and I’ll light the world on fire for her vibes. He’s the perfect hitman and the exact person Scarlett needs in her life.
Overall I absolutely loved the book and I will be reading it again.

Gorgeous book. However, I struggled. I pushed myself to finish since I bought it, but I really wanted to DNF.
Character development was lacking, dialogue was hokey, and there were major plot holes in the overall story. Even with all the action and a great premise I was bored. I really wanted to like this, but, in the end, I didn't care how the story ended.
It's just was not a great book for me.

I loved the idea of this book but it just did not hit the mark for me.
I understand it’s fiction, but I have a difficult time getting into a book if the characters don’t make decisions or have thoughts a normal person would have. The characters lacked depth and personality. Scarlett is too quick to accept her fate of being kidnapped, and she falls for Bane so quickly. I wish I had gotten a more well-written inner dialogue. I found things very repetitive for example the amount of times she said “morally grey” like the reader can’t infer this from his character already. It was a clear example of an author telling and not showing. This also makes her unrelatable and boring.
I would have given her a different “dream,” a coffee shop/bookstore combo is unoriginal and admittedly had me rolling my eyes. She could have been a clothing designer who owned a tailor shop, a florist, a photographer, really anything that wasn’t cliche.
Scarlett should have been more cautious of Bane. From their first meeting, she was enamored by him. I get some people have strong attraction at first sight but I have a hard time thinking it’s normal to not question people at all. I will go ahead and just say Bane was not morally grey. He was a product of a bad situation but not morally grey. He had to do what he had to do for his family. I understand Scarlett doesn’t know his circumstances for most of the book, only knows that he is an assassin, even so there could have been more edge to him. Even in his battle with whether to engage in any intimacy with Scarlett he barely puts up a fight with himself. He doesn’t hesitate enough for someone who is in a very dangerous line of work.
This book is categorized as dark romance but it doesn’t necessarily feel that way aside from the moderate trigger warnings. It lacked the intensity most dark romances have. The ending felt rushed and unrealistic.
I understand it’s fiction, but I have a difficult time getting into a book if the characters don’t make decisions or have thoughts a normal person would have. The characters lacked depth and personality. Scarlett is too quick to accept her fate of being kidnapped, and she falls for Bane so quickly. I wish I had gotten a more well-written inner dialogue. I found things very repetitive for example the amount of times she said “morally grey” like the reader can’t infer this from his character already. It was a clear example of an author telling and not showing. This also makes her unrelatable and boring.
I would have given her a different “dream,” a coffee shop/bookstore combo is unoriginal and admittedly had me rolling my eyes. She could have been a clothing designer who owned a tailor shop, a florist, a photographer, really anything that wasn’t cliche.
Scarlett should have been more cautious of Bane. From their first meeting, she was enamored by him. I get some people have strong attraction at first sight but I have a hard time thinking it’s normal to not question people at all. C.A Varian is a new author I was encouraged to explore and I was not disappointed. I really enjoyed this duet narration audiobook. This is a dark romance in the Survivor & Savior series and I would recommend for beginners.
I really enjoyed the characters, how they were portrayed and their development throughout. The MMC is too nice and caring to be a contract killer he can do no wrong in my eyes I love how he protects the FMC.
I loved the writing style and was instantly invested into the plot however, I was slightly confused why they started using French phrases with each other and felt like the ending was slightly rushed but I still throughly enjoyed this story and would HIGHLY recommend it.
I would like to explore more by this author and I would love to hear that you've enjoyed this book too.

This was a great read with lots of action packed suspense & thrills.

Loved the ending and how it introduced us to the MC for the second novel.
My only dislike was how fast everything happened. This duo went from strangers to lovers quicker than a bolt of lightening.
And why Bane/Ethan wasn’t killed during the abduction of Scarlett. I feel like that needed some explanation. It didn’t make sense for the kidnappers to leave him without making sure he was “taken care of”
This was an immersive reading experience for me and I loved Teddy Hamilton and Shiloh James’ performance

How did this win an award?! I don't mean to be rude but, literally how? This is...flatter than a pancake. It is supposed to be a story about an assassin in NOLA and it completely lacks any soul. It reads like a reporting of the facts, not a romance. The emotion is just... contrived? The plot is nonsensical. Even the Mafia connection came across as somehow both annoying and boring. It could have been so good and I am deeply irritated by the fact that it just isn't.

Such a great read!
I loved reading this book and watching the characters blossom. I've always been a sucker for a protective MMC. I couldn’t put this book down and finished it within a day. I definitely recommend you listen and read this book.

2.5 stars. Quite an interesting plot to say the least. Basically an assassin is hired by a woman named Scarlett's abusive husband and he ends up falling in love with her. Mob war also intertwined in it🤣 It was quite fast paced and a little ridiculous but clearly I was intrigued and read it in a day and will be reading the second book lol

This rivals Den of Vipers for “worst book I’ve ever had the displeasure of reading”. Genuinely, put the pen down. Not everyone was meant to be a writer and that’s perfectly okay.
This author needs a crash course on characterization, plotting, outlining, world-building, dialogue, and literally grammar. It was a self-insert from start to finish and I fully blame how available Amazon’s made publishing for the reason this exists.
Bring back finding an editor and an agent the norm so someone can tell you to trash it before unsuspecting consumers become literary casualties.

I was chosen as an ARC reader for this book, and I’m not sure if it was a blessing or a mistake… because as good as this book is, I want more and unfortunately will have to wait. 😳😂
To start off the aesthetic of the E-book is beyond pleasing. It’s literally a perfect match to my own personal aesthetic, so that made the allure that much more appealing. Now as to the contents of this book, I’ve never read anything by C.A. before, but now that I have, she’s definitely an author I will continuously be watching for and enjoying. I swoon for the MMC and his touch her, and die vibes!! Bane comes across as this badass hardened assassin but under that exterior shell he has such a huge heart. Scarlett the FMC is such an inspiring woman, one who has been faced with so much pain and abuse from her husband, but still manages to put on a brave face and greet the the world within her safe place that doubles as her life’s passion. I couldn’t flip through the pages fast enough as I was sucked in and needing to know more with each chapter!!
I give it a 🌶️🌶️ for smut as there wasn’t very much of it throughout the story, but for the couple parts that it did have it was deliciously detailed and made up for the lack throughout the story as a whole. I really enjoyed reading this story and can’t wait to see what’s to come for Bane and Scarlett 🖤

This book was not for me… I really wanted to like it but 20% in, I almost DNF. I skimmed through the 2nd half of the book and still didn’t feel like I missed anything. It felt very predictable to me. The writing was cheesy, in my opinion. I just feel like it felt rushed and unrealistic with some of the dialogue and just how fast everything happened.
