In ‘The shadow of the lyre-bird’, a fairy tale like story, the Spanish author Andres Ibanez (not Ibanez Andres) combines philosophy, poetry and phantasy. The main character is Adenar, a young prince from the planet Glabris, seeking his lost soul. Magicians and fairies help him travel to the planet Demonia. He finds out that his life is the subject of a series of popular children’s books. He goes further, desperately searching for his identity. Adenar gets involved in political guerilla, secreat associations and a sort of space ark.
The novel is intruigingly enchanting, in a style of light-footedness combined with deep thoughts, which ‘pushes the story forward’, to my liking.
The novel’s original title is La sombra del pajaro lira, published by Seix Barral at Barcelona 2003.
The Dutch edition I have read, was published by Menken Kasander Wigman at Leiden 2006. The translation is by Frans Oosterholt. It’s a hard back, 504 pages, ISBN 978 90 74622 56 1.
